"What are you thinking?" John asked Lyra. She chewed on her bottom lip before answering him.
"I know its crazy but sometimes I'm not sure if Moriarty is dead. Or Sherlock for that matter."
"He shot himself in the head," John pointed out.
"That might not be as hard to fake as think," she replied. "Fire a blank, some packets of fake- or maybe real- blood. Sherlock is wishful thinking I know and if he did turn out to be alive I'm killing him."
"Yeah me too." He wondered if it could be considered justifiable homicide if he strangled Sherlock back to death. Then a darker thought hit him. "What's Moriarty doing if he's alive?"
"Waiting to come back, of course. A man like him needs to make a dramatic entrance. That's his weakness, he could have just had Sherlock assassinated but he didn't. He went though the trouble of becoming Richard Brook and trying to destroy Sherlock's reputation."
John hated to admit it but what Lyra said made some sense. And somehow a world with no Sherlock but Moriarty sounded horrible and all too plausible.
"Sorry I shouldn't have said anything. You asked me what I was thinking but I should have lied."
"How do you always know what I'm thinking?" He already knew the answer.
"It's written all over your face, John. I bet your horrible at poker."
"I'm no trouble to deduce then?"
"Nope." Lyra smiled widely and stuck her tongue out by him. John laughed. "Some people are actually pretty difficult to deduce. Most are easy to deduce, the average person doesn't really know everything someone can tell just by looking. Then there are those who are real puzzles or will make you think you have them figured out when you haven't."
"Which one are you?"
Lyra seemed to consider the question for a few minutes and then she shrugged. "You tell me."
"Your..." he looked her up and down trying to pick up things. He didn't see any stains or markings or anything else that Sherlock usually pointed out when he was making deductions. "Harder to figure out."
"I'm sure you tried your best," she said cheerfully and John couldn't tell if she was mocking him or not. He considered asking Lyra to show him her deduction skills but he didn't feel like discussing deductions all day. It was nice out and he thought that they could both use a moment to relax.
I keep worrying that I'm not making Lyra's character consistent, she seems to be sort of random. Also I think I might have Lyra meet Anderson or Lestrade. Maybe I should have her meet Moriarty eventually but that might be a better idea for an entirely new story. Anyway please review and tell me what you think.
