As Roxas walked with this girl from his form times, Aqua if his memory served correctly, to their next lesson he began to ponder over whether or not he was correct about his assumption. The person she was describing was Terra, wasn't it? So then Aqua liked Terra, right? He wouldn't dare say a thing about it to Aqua or begin a conversation about the matter in fear of perhaps saying something that he wouldn't be able to explain how he knew or something like that. Either way, this new development brought hope to his own eyes as a way to get Terra away from Ventus for the time being and then, in the long run, away from doting over him as well. He did feel slightly bad about how in a way it could be viewed as him as using Terra for his own selfish needs but wouldn't it be better for Aqua to get with the boy she liked and for Terra to no longer have to be hopelessly in love with him? Although, Roxas had let the fact that this person may not even be Terra escape his mind at the time. He had to check his facts immediately to make sure he wasn't planning the impossible first…
He and Aqua reached their destination of their next lesson in what seemed like a very short amount of time - perhaps because Roxas had so intensely pondering over his new development? Either way, they were at their lesson and, just like all the others, he wished that it would be over quickly so that he could go home and try and forget the fact that he was breaking way too many rules at once and lying to so many people. He'd now dragged Aqua into this all, not that he knew her well, but she seemed like a nice person who doesn't deserve to be apart of such a story of twists, turns, and just in general a huge mess.
Although, he could always just ask her offhandedly about it…?
That sounded like a good plan, what's better than small talk during an art lesson, especially pottery because pottery is a generally boring or overly serious activity. Time to break the silence.
"So, Aqua who was that guy you were talking about? On the roof I mean, not that you have to tell me!" Roxas asked hoping that he had a good enough Ventus impression and her name right. The girl stopped working with the clay in her hands for a moment before continuing to shape it, though at a visibly slower pace now as she began to focus on words at the same time.
"I don't know if you'll remember him, it was a rather long time ago that we all last hung out together. It's Terra. Terra Otsuka?" She replied, letting herself smile as she said Terra's name. So it really was him…
"I remember Terra; how could I forget him? So do you want to talk about it, you seemed a bit down earlier… Crushes are always fun to talk about anyway!"
"Oh Ventus, you're still so kind, I'm jealous of how sweet you can be sometimes. If you want to hear me talking about him I'd gladly talk, but as long as you tell me if you have any crushes on anyone as well afterwards!" She laughed and Roxas just nodded, smiling right back at her. She was a nice person as he thought, and that motherly aura that surrounded her was definitely a thing. She spoke with a softness that calmed and relaxed him almost effortlessly.
Roxas urged her to continue speaking, as he began to carve an intricate pattern into his clay work.
"I don't know what it is about him. Before I felt like I had a duty to look after him, but that was when we were younger and now I can see he's grown up, and more distant from me, and I want our previous relationship back. Maybe even something more. He's already beginning to think about his future and when he told me about it, even though it was in little detail, it felt lonely and I felt like it would be better for both of us if I was in it, as strange and self centred as that may sound… When he smiles I melt, when he looks at me I feel happy, when he compliments me, hell even if he talk to me, I feel so complete and I'm so scared of telling him I like him just in case I ruin everything and I lose all those things forever…" She paused for a moment and sighed. "Thank you for listening Ventus, you're so kind to everyone I find it hard to believe at times."
"It's nothing, and hey, Aqua, I get what you mean about the being scared part, but trust me you should tell him. He's one of your oldest friends, he's not going to hate you because you like him." Roxas laughed trying to lighten the suddenly sad mood. It worked and Aqua began to laugh as well. She could see his point.
"You said you'd tell me about your crushes though, don't pull back on me now Ventus!" She grinned making Roxas blush, he hoped that she'd forget that bit. "So what boys or girls have caught your eye then?"
"Well…" Roxas said trying to gain some thoughts together. He hadn't really though about who he like, in a romantic sense at least, since both Terra and Vanitas had been chasing him and had, in a way, put him off of thinking about anyone with a relationship in mind. He remembered Namine wanted to ask him out so perhaps she would've been a good match for him? She certainly was cute and did have a nice personality as well as a lot of good skills, art being her main one.
No. She wasn't a crush, more than anything she was like a sister to him. So who? It'd been so long since he had even thought about love properly. Someone who could make him laugh… Someone who would be able to cheer him up… Someone he could trust with anything… Someone who was kind to him and helped him and made everything seem alright… Well there was someone who seemed to fit those descriptions but no, definitely not. They surely wouldn't happen to be the person he had developed a crush on?
"Ventus? Are you okay? You know if there isn't anyone you don't have to force yourself to come up with someone, right?" Aqua interrupted his train of thought as reminded him that there was someone still waiting for an answer. Perhaps it was best to stop while he was ahead of himself.
"I'm okay, Aqua, I just can't think of anyone aha…" He put his carving tool down and looked at his work. Love certainly wasn't a thing to be concerning himself with at this moment. Stopping Marluxia and his gang from bullying Ventus was his main and only priority.
"You always were a bit indecisive. Don't worry. Lesson is almost over anyway, so lets go clean up and get to the next one?" Roxas nodded in reply.
Aqua was a nice person.
~Meanwhile~
The lesson ended and Ventus went out of auditorium, with Sora following behind him, to try and find Vanitas. Why he had to go and help was a stupid reason but he wasn't going to refuse. Having Vanitas be angry didn't seem like a good thing after all.
Vanitas had stormed out of the auditorium as soon as the bell rang and so they had to first track him down. It was an easier task than they had assumed at first since there was a trail of red juice down the hallway that could only be Vanitas, since what kind of person walks around dripping red normally?
The trail of drips and drops led outside where the two brothers spotted the boy they were tracking down sitting in a tree, his bag dropped in the dirt along with his tie. They both walked over to him, Sora noticeably lagging behind Ventus, most likely in fear.
"Hi Vanitas…?" Ventus spoke up trying his best to smile. Vanitas looked down at him, his scowl seeming to soften a bit until he spotted Sora, who was shyly waving with an awkward half smile, to which he just grunted and looked away to the clouds again. The two brothers sighed. Ventus elbowed Sora and gave him a look.
"I-I'm sorry Vanitas? I didn't expect you to get so angry, it was just for giggles, so, yeah, uhm, I'm sorry about that." Sora cleared his throat and apologised as sincerely as he could hoping that the other boy wouldn't get even more annoyed and would just accept it.
"Nice to know that you know you're a dick."
"Vanitas! Just accept the apology!" Ventus looked at him eyebrows furrowed and a sad look on his face.
"I have no reason to have to so just leave me alone and go off pulling more fucking stupid pranks."
"I should go, maybe you can calm him down if I'm not here?" Sora whispered to Ventus and patted his shoulder before waving and running off to his next lesson, leaving Ventus there with just Vanitas.
What to do…? This was harder than he had thought it'd be. Most people would just accept an apology and let the angry bubble up on the outside, but Vanitas, Vanitas was like a time bomb just waiting to go off, and now his time had ticked away and he was bursting out with all of the anger that was inside of him. His usual dark humour, sarcastic, teasing nature was now just him being irate and sassy. What to do indeed…
Ventus dropped his bag next to Vanitas' one and began to climb the first few branches to get on level with the other boy.
"Move over." Ventus said and Vanitas slid to the side to allow him to sit down next to him. They both sat in silence for a moment that felt longer than it was. The sky was clouding over and the sun was trying to hide away. The breeze carried the scent of the ocean on it, the leaves of the tree rustled as the wind danced through them making them brush against each other to make noise.
"Why couldn't you just accept Sora's apology?" It sounded aggressive and accusatory and Vanitas grit his teeth trying his best to keep it under control.
"Why couldn't you take a hint and go the fuck away?" The response was cold. Too cold for how Vanitas usually was. No hidden meaning just him being cruelly honest.
"Because I don't want to. Let me do this for you."
"Why? So you can use it against me in the future? So we can act all friendly? I know you hate me don't bother hiding it, everyone does."
"I just want to help you! Really!"
"Sure…"
"It's true! Stop trying to make me into a bad guy here, I just want to help."
"I never asked for any help did I?"
"But you're upset! Everyone needs help when they're upset!"
"I'm not upset, I'm irritated." Short answers and rolled eyes didn't give Ventus much to work with and were making him lose his own patience.
"Irritated? You're irritated? Why would you be irritated over a dumb joke that Sora pulled?! He was just trying to make it scene funnier, you need to lighten up is what! Yes Sora is annoying sometimes but you can't be annoyed for ever. Just why do you have to act like this?! Why do you have to refuse all help when you obviously need it?! I just want to help. I want to help you… Why won't you let me do this for you Roxas?!" Ventus bit his lip to avoid letting more words out and tried his best to not cry. This was truly infuriating…
~Flashback~
A young Roxas no older than 10 was crying in the corner of his room with loud sobs and wails. He was upset.
Ventus tiptoed around the books and toys and blankets and just the general miscellaneous assortment of items strewn haphazardly across the room to try and reach his brother. It was no easy task to reach him without falling over but he managed it and he got over to Roxas. His hand reached out to try and comfort the crying boy but was slapped away before it could come into contact with the golden locks that adorned his twin's head.
"Roxas?"
"Leave me alone! You don't understand what I'm going through so stop trying to!"
"But I want to help, let me understand and we can work this out together!" He sat down in front of him and gave a reassuring smile.
"No! You won't understand, you can't, just leave me alone!" Roxas shoved Ventus over and backward onto the pile of books. Ventus looked up at the ceiling with tears pricking his eyes. He stood up and dusted himself off, his back hurt but he didn't mind.
"Please let me help you, Rox, I just want to help…"
No response…
"Roxas I-"
"Just go away! Honestly take a hint I never asked for help, so leave me alone!" Roxas shouted with a tremble to his voice.
"You don't have to ask for help for other to know that you need it! Let me help. Please I can help you really… I just want to help. I just want to help you… Why won't you let me do this for you, Roxas?!" Ventus turned and ran out of the room, tripping over and stumbling a little as he began to cry as well.
~End Of Flashback~
Vanitas sighed and looked at the boy next to him. God he was a mess, tears staining his face and his normally shining bright as the sky eyes, glassy and unusually sorrow filled.
"Look. A lot of thing happen to people so stop assuming they want your help because you don't know their story now do you?" He paused for a moment. "God, you look so pitiful Ven. Fine, I accept Sora's apology, but I still don't want any help with anything else. Tell him it wasn't really even him though. I supposed he deserves to know that much." Ventus sniffled and looked at Vanitas.
"But then what was it that made you so annoyed?" Ventus questioned and this made the other just laugh.
"You're so nosey, honestly. You know what, fine you can know. It's my uncle. He's the guy who's supposed to be looking after me, since my parents are gone. Not in the sense of 'both of them are dead' but they chose to go on a trip to some places and they haven't come back for a few years. It's not like Uncle Xe in even home much anyway, he's a scientist of some kind but does a lot of archaeology. It's nothing big but having to look after myself all the time means I don't need to rely on anyone else. I don't need your help." Vanitas was opening up to Ventus and he couldn't help but feel special to know such things. He felt sorry for Vanitas. Being alone like that because of his parents, and the fact that his uncle was so neglective was terrible. He wasn't going to pry much more though. It felt rude.
The two of them felt rain falling from above them and so they looked up to see the, previously blue, sky suddenly grey with clouds that had the sun kept away behind it. The rain was only getting heavier and so the two boys scrambled their way down and out of the tree, grabbed their bags (and Vanitas slung his tie around his neck as quickly as he could), and ran inside.
At this point, Ventus realised the time and gasped.
"We're obscenely late for our lessons! What are we going to do, oh gosh, Vanitas what do we do?" Ventus began to panic. The other boy took a hold of his hand and walked him up the stairway nearby them.
They walked down corridors until Vanitas finally came to a stop outside a door. Ventus didn't dare ask a question until they entered the room that Vanitas was opening the door to. They stepped in and Ventus looked around.
The…
School library…?
"We're in the library? What for? What about lessons?"
"It's late anyway, let's just skip. Come we can go read something so our time's not completely wasted." Vanitas replied still holding Ventus' hand and leading him over to a table in the corner, while taking detours around the bookshelves to pick up an assortment of books.
The books were placed on the table and their hands separated, Ventus immediately sitting down and wiping his hand on his trousers because of how clammy they felt. Vanitas followed suite and sat down picking up a book from the top of the pile and then rummaging around in his bag. Ventus briefly wondered what he was looking for as he pulled out a glasses case and took out a pair and red framed reading glasses.
Oh dear God.
He put his glasses on and opened the book he'd picked up and began to read.
Oh. Dear. God.
Ventus' hand reached for a book but his eyes didn't move from watching Vanitas.
How? How in the world could a pair of glasses change a person's look so much? He suddenly felt as if he understood how no one could tell Clark Kent and Superman were the same person when Clark wore his glasses.
His hand reached too far and he felt flesh against his own. He'd managed to reach right over and hold Vanitas' hand. Oh dear God… Vanitas looked up and at Ventus, who turned his face away with a blush and yanked his hand away from the other's grasp.
"Couldn't keep your eyes off of me huh?" Vanitas grinned making Ventus stand up and mutter something about finding a different book. Before he could scamper away from his embarrassment, Vanitas grabbed his tie and pulled his face down to level with his, catching his lips in a kiss. It was short, sweet and caught Ventus right off guard with how uncharacteristic of Vanitas it was.
When they split Ventus ran round the bookshelves and sunk to his knees, a hand to his mouth and eyes wide in shock.
He stayed there for a bit before grabbing a book that looked vaguely interesting and returning to the table where Vanitas sat still reading. He looked so at peace and so absorbed in the book her was reading. It was like he was at peace for once. Ventus sat down and read his book of poetry until the bell rang to signal that the lesson was over.
