I try to make this story one about Thorin and his queen thats why I will rush through the book/movie. I kinda lost track on this story so I will try to find a fiting end to it, I hate leaving a story without an end. I´m not a huge fan of Jacksons version, making Kili, Fili and Oin stay in Laketown due to Kilis injury, so I went after the book in this chapter.
'I think the worst is indeed behind us.'
Oda could have slapped Bilbo silly for that comment on the Carrock. In fact it had gotten worse day by day. They had been chased through half of Middle Earth by the orcs and a skin changer and the man named Beorn did not hide the fact that he strongly disliked dwarves. On their run to his house Bombur had nearly shaken off the entire company until the thick wooden door had stopped his run. If the situation had not been that dangerous Oda would have laughed for hours about the sight of Bombur running like a mad dwarf and slamming against the door. Their days at Beorns home were a relief, but Thorin rushed them to continue their quest, for Durins day was nearly upon them. Beorn helped them out with ponies and supplies, but only because he disliked orcs even more than dwarves. The orcs had killed his whole family and the race of skinchangers and Beorn felt nothing but hatred and bitterness towards the filthy creatures of Mordor. Thorin did not feel peaceful enough to linger at Beorns and only two days later the company was on their way to Mirkwood.
His relationship to Oda had suffered greatly during the quest. They had been too many secrets he had kept from her during their marriage. These secrets, as the goldsickness and the arkenstone, had not been of importance in the Blue Mountains and Thorin had not meant to keep them forever. But now they were of most greatest importance. Thorin could only hope that Oda would understand.
Gandalf left them at the rim of the forest, he had an own task to fullfill although he did not tell the company about it. The lack of information from the wizards side deeply irritated Oda and she looked to speak to him in private.
'Listen wizard, you may have my husbands trust, but you do not have mine. You send him on this quest, on this road full of peril and you do not even bother to inform him about what you know. And you know something. Why don´t you trust Thorin enough to fill him in?' she asked him and glared daggers at him.
'My dear queen.' Gandalf smiled at her warmly. 'Your loyalty towards your husband is honorable. He is a lucky dwarf to have you by his side. And he will need you when he arrives in Erebor.'
With these words the wizard turned his back on Oda and the company and rode away, warning them to stay on the path through the thick and dark forest. Soon the trees had swallowed every light from the sun and the air was smelly and thick. The company got dizzy of the fumes which poisoned the forest and soon they had lost the path. As Bilbo climbed one of the trees to look for the path the company felt that something was off.
Thorin heard a strangled cry and turned around, his eyes widening with horror as he saw a giant spider piercing its spike into Oda. White foam formed at her mouth as she tried to catch her breath and she collapsed onto the ground. With a desperate cry Thorin rushed forwards to his wife side, but then the whole company was attacked by the giant spiders and was overwhelmed. Bilbo was the only one spared because he was sitting on the top of the trees, safe from the spiders reach. He watched as the spiders wrapped their prey into their webs and discussed wether to eat them or to keep them hanging for later. Not willing to let the company die the halfling pulled out his sword and began fighting the spiders. It was a brave action, the spiders were enormous and the majority. With the helpf the ring he managed to kill two spiders and diverted the others. The brave halfling cut down the webs which held the company and freed them of the white and sticky prison. Thorin immediately rushed to Odas side. The queen looked pale and stood up on shaky legs. But the company had no time to lose, since the spiders were returning. They fought their way through the dark forest until the spiders had caught up with them again. The biggest spider went for the royal couple and Thorin protectively tried to cover his wife from the attacking beast. But before the spider could reach them it was struck down by a dozen arrows. Soon the company was surrounded by elves and a young blonde elf was pointing his arrow at Thorin. Oda grabbed her weapons, ready to defend her husband. But they stood no chance against the few dozen elves surrounding them by now. Kili was dragged towards them by a beautiful red haired elf and the dwarves were stripped off their weapons. The blonde elf moved towards Oda, but Thorin stepped into his way.
'Don't you dare touch her, elf!' he snarled and pulled the elfs attention towards himself. The elf took Thorins sword Orcrist and looked at it in surprise.
'Where did you get this sword?' he asked and frowned at the dwarf king.
'It was given to me.' Thorin grumbled.
'A thief and a liar.' the elf snarled and pushed Thorin along the new found path with the others.
Oda took her husbands hand and squeezed it. She could feel him tense at the thought of meeting the king of the elves again. Thranduil had denied the dwarves any help after Smaug had taken the mountain and Thorin hated him for that. She stayed by his side until they reached the elven city. There Thorin was dragged away from her and the rest of the company. Every dwarf was put into a solitary cell. The elven guard watching Fili found the last one of his hidden dagger and snarled at the heir to Erebor before he pushed him into the cell. Kili looked at the red haired elf guarding him with big innocent eyes and asked her if she would not like to search him for weapons, too. He made Oda chocke on air as he stated that he might have something hidden deep inside of his trousers. The red hair only rolled her eyes and closed the door to Kilis cell before turning her back on him with an amused smirk. Oda sat down against the bars and watched the path leading up to the city. She hoped that Thorin would not do anything stupid. Her hopes were crashed as Thorin was was dragged back and told Balin what he had answed the king in return for his offer to help. While Balin closed his eyes in defeat Oda had to hold back her laughter. Her husband had basically told the elven king that he wished to pour excrements upon his face and that he should burn in everlasting fire. Oda leaned her forehead against the bares and watched Thorin who paced within his cell nervously. Thorin felt his wifes gaze and sat down against the bars himself, and the royal couple spent the evening looking at each other lovingly, reassuring themselves that the other one was alright. There was in fact something Oda was unsure about. She had felt a change in her body ever since they had left Rivendell three months ago. She was not bleeding anymore, but she had thought it to be a result from stress. Now she was sure that she was pregnant again. Pregnant and on a dangerous quest which could claim all of their lives. Thorin and her had already lost a child and she was terrified about losing yet another. She had promised Dis that she would take care of her brother and her sons, but now she also had to held reaponsibility for her unborn child. She wished that she could talk to Thorin about that, but he was too far away. All she could do was watch him drift to sleep and torture herself with her doubts.
While she lingered there, spleepless and sad, she heard Kili talk with the red haired elf. Kili told her that he had promised his mother that he would come back to her. Hearing these words from her nephews mouth Oda decided that she would do whatever necessary to bring Dis back her family, which was also her own family.
What neither of them had expected was that Bilbo was the one who freed them of their elven prison. He had stolen the keys from the guards and had a plan for them to escape. At least he had a plan for the dwarves to escape. There were thirteen barrels, one for every dwarf, but none big enough for Oda. Thorin, of course, refused to leave without his queen.
'You must leave, Thorin.' Oda cupped his cheek in her hand and looked at him pleadingly. Parting from him again broke her heart, but it was either that or more days or even weeks of prison. And Durins day was not far away. 'Thranduil will not do anything to me. And I will try to negociate peace with him in your place.'
'I do not want peace with the elves.' Thorin growled. 'And I will not leave you with them!'
'Thorin, please.' the elven guards began to stirr and Oda ran out of time. She had to tell him. 'I am with child, Thorin. I am since we left Rivendell. I cannot follow you on the road you need to take. But I can follow you on a road of my own.'
Thorin looked at his queen with a mixture of surprise and love. Subconsciously he placed his hands on her still flat belly and sighed. He could not put his queen into danger and risk the life of the unborn dwarfling. Oda was right, she had to stay, even if the thought of leaving her behind again made Thorin sick.
'Come back to me. And take care of the little one.' Thorin whispered and kissed his wife passionately. 'Promise me.'
'I promise.' Oda smiled at Thorin one last time and watched as the barrels disappeared into the river.
Oda stood in front of king Thranduil and met his glare.
'So, you are Thorins queen. Thats why he fought so hard for you.' Thranduil looked her up and down and circled her, making her feel threatened. 'But he left you. Here. With the king he so strongly despises. Why?'
'He wants to protect me and his child.' Oda knew that she had to be honest with Thranduil if she wanted his help. 'His quest is a dangerous one.'
'Its not the quest which is dangerous. It is him.' Thranduil sneered. At Odas shocked glare he smiled sadly. 'He did not tell you.'
'He did not tell me what?' Oda asked.
'His kin is cursed. His grandfather and his father succumbed to the goldsickness and Thorin will, too. Nothing is more precious to the dwarves than their gold and jewels. And the Arkenstone. Thorin will never love anything more than that stone. Not you and not your unborn child.' Thranduils voice had become soft and sad. 'You are a lost queen, mylady. Lost to your home and to your heart. Thorin will not come back for you.'
'But I will go to him.' Oda straightened and tried to ignore the knowing wrenching in her stomach. Thranduil had spoken of everything she feared since Thorin had told her the truth about his family in Rivendell. 'He is my king and I will stay loyal to him.'
Thranduil sat back in his thrown, looking at Oda rather bored. 'You can try.' he stated and waved with his hands to gesture to the guards to take the queen of the Blue Mountains away. Only this time Oda was not put into a ceel, she got a nice and warm room with a guarded door. Oda sat down on her bed and looked out of the window. She could see the Lonely Mountain and her heart screamed out for Thorin. She laid a hand onto her stomach and prayed that her husband would wait for her when his quest was succesful. No if, when.
Thorin felt more lost the nearer they came to Erebor. He worried about Oda and their child, but he also worried about what would happen when they arrived at Erebor. He tried to focus on their quest. They had passed Laketown and had arrived at the mountain. The bowman Brads warning that they would awaken the beast which would destroy them all was ignored. Thanks to the halfling they had found the secret door and had managed to open it. Thorin and the dwarves had tears in their eyes as they entered the mountain. They knew these walls and they knew that stone. They were home. If they were to die then they would at least die at home. It was Bilbos turn now. He had to retrieve the Arkenstone from Smaug. And he tried. The halfling and Balin were the only ones to see the change in Thorins heart. Their leader was slowly turning into a griedy and coldhearted dwarf without realising it. As Bilbo returned without the Arkenstone Thorin pointed the tip of his blade at his throat, only waken up from this nightmare by an attacking Smaug. During the fight against the dragon Thorin was back to his old self again, not feeling the cold claws of the goldsickness tie its claws around his heart. As the dragon left the mountain to seek revenge for the attack upon the men of Laketown Thorins resistance began to crumble. The dwarves spend most of their time near the treasury and Thorin was taken over by the lust for gold day by day. At the beginning he resisted it by thinking of Oda and their child. But soon the image of his wife faded in his head and was replaced by gold and the arkenstone. They had still not found it. The dwarves of the company felt the change in their leader, but they dared not speak to Thorin about it. Solely Bilbo tried, but he was pushed back by Thorin who did not notice the change in himself. He was completly caught in the curse of his line.
'We will march upon Erebor. And you will come with us.' it was no request and Oda knew it. Smaug had destroyed Laketown and the men and elves thought the dwarves dead and would claim the mountain.
'It is my husbands mountain, the dwarves mountain! You have no right to claim it!' Oda stated strongly, but Thranduil was already on his way to the halls. The queen of the Blue Mountains was escorted to the halls by four elven guards and the red hair. 'I am Thorins queen and I forbid you to enter my husbands kingdom!'
'And how do you want to do so, queen Oda?' Thranduil smirked at her.
'I have sent a trush to the Iron Hills.' Oda had found the bird in front of her window a few days ago and had used the opportunity to send a message to lord Dain. 'In a few days the dwarves of the Iron Hills will have secured the mountain.'
Thranduils expression went dark and Oda saw the fury in the elfs eyes. But the old king quickly regained control over his emotions. He was so different from Thorin. Thorin. Oda missed her husband with every inch of her heart. She knew that he was not dead, for she would have felt it. He was out there and he was alone. Oda only hoped that Dain would arrive in time.
Her worry deepened as they came closer to the Lonely Mountain. As strongly as she felt Thorin being alive, she could feel that his presence had changed. The army of elves moved past the ruins of Dale and Oda could feel the lost souls of the dead still wandering through the city. Her heart froze as she saw the Lonely Mountain. The gate had crashed down and a mighty stone avalanche had blocked the only way out for the dwarves. An army from Laketown had arrived, a few hundred men strong, it was all the dragon had left after his attack. Their leader, a man named Bard, walked towards Thranduil. He looked devastated and tired and Oda could feel his determination to get out of Erebor whatever he needed to support his people.
'The dwarves are still alive, they are trapped inside of the mountain.' Bard told Thranduil.
Oda let out a sigh of relief and joined the two leaders. Thranduil introduced her to Bard. 'Lord Bard, this is queen Oda, Thorins wife.'
Oda bowed her head before Bard, who looked at her in surprise but respectfully bowed his head back. 'His queen. Maybe you can reach him in his madness.'
'Madness?' Oda could not believe it. She had come too late.
'Your husband promised us our share of the gold when the dragon is defeated. He does not seem to remeber his promise. I could see the glimmer of the goldlust in his eyes.' Bard told Oda sadly.
The queen closed her eyes in defeat. But she would not give up. 'Let me talk to him.' as Thranduil moved to accompany her Oda shook her head. 'Your presence will only enrage him further. I can only imagine his fury when he saw your army.'
But Thranduil was not ready to take Odas request. 'You are forgetting that you are my prisoner, queen Oda. I will not let you go anywhere near that mountain alone.'
Oda knew that this would backfire, but she had no choice. It was either talk to Thorin in Thranduil presence or not talk to him at all. As she walked towards the gate she could see a few familiar figures standing on the look out. She recognised Balin and Dwalin. Shortly after she had stopped walking she could see Thorin joining them on the lookout. Odas was shocked by the way her husband looked. His hair had grown more grey and his eyes were dead. There was no fire in them anymore, only the gleam of madness.
'Thorin.' she whispered, unable to rise her voice at the sight of her husband.
'Thorin Oakenshield! We have come to remind you of your promise and your responsibility. The beast has destroyed Laketown after you woke it against all warning. All the men need is a tiny share of the gold to rebuild their homes. A share of the gold you promised them, dwarf!' Thranduil exclaimed and ignored Odas gasp.
'You! Treacherous elf, you have come here to seek what is mine! And you have stolen my queen!' Thorin was not himself.
'Thorin, listen to me...' Oda tried to reach her husband, but the elfs presence had enraged him beyond every reason, like she had foreseen.
'No! Go back to him, you do not belong here!' Thorin yelled at Oda. 'Stay with the elves like you wanted to. You do not belong here, at my side!'
Oda knew that the madness was talking out of her husbands mouth, but his words hurt nevertheless. She had given up her home for him, twice. She had nowhere to go anymore.
As Kili told Tauriel that he had promised his mother that he would come back to her in DoS I nearly cried. I am a grown woman, but everytime I think about the three Durins dying I want to cry...there will be no such thing in my stories.
