Chapter Seven:
The town of course was busy, even more than it had been a few days ago. The wedding preparations were well under way. Every detail worked out to the last flower on the tip-top of the cake. Precision of each piece was a work of art. George was lost in the chaos pulled in this direction and that. He had to get all this right. This was Lemon's dream…this was…
Zoe.
There she was walking across the street hand and hand with Wade. He did not know which sight was more bizarre, Wade holding hands or Zoe walking with him. Though, he could not help but notice how beautiful she looked. She was wearing strappy white high heels and a simple black dress, her brown hair flowed freely around her face. She was smiling with ever word. He could tell she was smitten and it just annoyed him. He thought she had better taste than that. What was so great about that player? So he was good looking, so was George…what did he have that George did not? As he pondered that question a huge heart with Lemon and his face on it passed right by him…oh right…now he remembered. Wade was single and George was not. He believed Zoe had feelings for him, but he made his choice, and he would stick with it.
And to top his day Lavon was on his way over.
"George you got to cancel the wedding."
Now George was just angry, if Lavon thought he was getting Lemon he was mistaken. Yeah, that was right, he, George Tucker loved Lemon Breeland. He had to remember that, his feelings for Zoe would pass. He and Lemon had been together too long to let anything stand in their way, "I don't care Lavon, you are not stopping this Wedding."
"Now believe me George, I want this as much as you, but the Rita Urban's rooster is lying down in the barn, Tom's knee is tingling, a storm is coming, a big one. Now if you want to have this at the firehouse, I can…"
"Stop it, this is pathetic, Lemon and I are getting married." George began to walk away. They had to get married, and they had to do it today.
"I know that…I'm just trying to help!"
"You've helped enough, don't you think!" If you never slept with Lemon, I would never have let myself explore my feelings with Zoe. But that is really my fault isn't it? Still…Lavon created the opportunity ...but maybe it is possible that would not have mattered? He shook his head, he will never know. He had to make sure everything went according to plan, "Lemon is getting her Wedding under the stars."
It was weird having Wade escort her to the car with his hand in hers, but good. He opened the door for her, "Thank you," She smiled.
"You're welcome, doc." He grinned as he quickly got in the car. It still stung that the main reason she wanted to run away with him was to get away from the wedding, but still...she was going with him, that counted for something. "Now what do you want to do in Mobile? If I got to carry all your bags I hope you make it worth me while."
"I was thinking we could just have dinner and maybe see a movie."
"Okay,"
"Good, So... I been wanting to see The Lucky One...I know it's a girly movie but it has parts about military so I figure it's a good comprise." She buckled up.
"Whatever you want, doc." He started up the car, and Zoe was surprised at how compliant he could be.
There was a loud boom and water came forth from the sky like the days of Noah and the ark. Lavon had managed to get most of the wedding supplies into the firehouse and all of Bluebell was hustling about to make sure the wedding of the century continued in a dignified Southern Belle fashion. It, however, was not working very well.
George was circling around the room, ordering this person and that, trying to fix everything as quickly as possible, but nothing was working in his favor. Maybe it wasn't supposed to, he was not one to really read into things but... who was he kidding? This was not about signs, Lemon cheated on him and he needed to figure out what was going on with him and Zoe, before Wade hurt her or worse, before he got smart and refused to let her go.
He took a deep breath and looked around him, this was to be one hell of a fall out. But first the worse part of it all: He had to tell Lemon. He disappeared and nobody really noticed because they were too busy fixing this and that.
Lemon looked gorgeous in her white gown and she looked so happy too. "Lemon," he called.
"Oh George, you can't be here, we are about to get married." She was smiling teasingly at him. He did love that smile.
"Lemon, we can't, we can't get married."
Her eyes widened along with her pouty little mouth, "What? You can't be serious." The temper of a southern woman was the reason for that old saying, 'Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.' And now he knew what it meant. He could see the rage in her eyes.
"I tried to fix things but I can't, you were with Lavon and when we had that break I kissed Zoe and now I have feelings for her…I need to figure this out. We need to figure this out Lemon"
Lemon punched him, and like the gentleman he was, he just turned and walked out the door. He quickly found his father and told him that they weren't getting married. His father was surprised but did not say anything other than to ask what he could do to help. George just told him that he would take care of everything, that he did not want his dad to stress himself out this soon after surgery. His father tried to insist, but his son gently laid on hand on his shoulder and his father agreed to sit still for a moment. Telling Lemon's father was just as fun as telling the bride. There was a fury of yelling and Mr. Tucker had to stand back up to defend his son.
"You are going to pay for everything," Brick yelled, "and you are never to speak to my little girl, again! I don't want to see you around for anything, not even another check-up."
"Now listen here," Mr. Tucker growled, "You don't talk to my son like that."
"Dad it's fine. I deserve it. I need you to calm down, I have to go an announcement to the guests." George stated.
"I'm not done with you!" Brick bellowed as he pointed his figure, just as Lemon came up behind him.
"Daddy, it's fine. I don't want to marry a man who doesn't want to marry me." She stated as she stood tall. Everyone was confused by the sight and music began to play as George made his way up the steps. He whispered something in the Pastor's ear, who waved the guests to be quiet.
"I'm sorry everyone, there's not going to be a wedding today after all!" He announced. There was a murmur of whisperers and more outrage cries. Then there was handful of people who were taking their gifts back off the table. Magnolia and the other bridesmaids made their way to soothe poor Lemon, who was busy trying to calm everyone else down.
It took a good thirty minutes to clear out the place before George could make his way over to see if Zoe was home.
They had somehow wound up in a barn which was not Zoe's idea of a romantic evening, but it worked out. Right now, she curled up against Wade, "Well…this didn't work out the way I planned doc, but to be honest I think I like this better." He grinned.
"How can this be better? We're stuck in a barn." She cried.
"Aw, doc but you are so sexy when you're soaking wet." Zoe blinked as the sudden realization hit her.
Her voice laced in accusation, "My bra is showing isn't it?" She glared at him, daring him to lie.
"Yep," He smiled.
"Well…" She stood up and then turned her back on him, "I'm just going to stare at this….wooden wall, so you can't see anymore."
"Ah doc, come on its like we are going to do anything. I'm just looking, you can't blame a man for that when they are so nice to look at." She was blushing and she crossed her arms, but she could not help to glance at them.
"Well, I know they are nice," She admitted, "I suppose it is not really your fault with all the rain."
"No, it's not, besides you are going to get cold. Let me warm you up, you know it might be better if you just took that shirt off."
"What?" She turned around in exclamation.
"Hey, I'm not trying to get another look, but you know... body heat and stuff."
"Mmm," she was shivering.
"You know it's not good to keep wet clothes on doc."
"No, it's not." She admitted, "And I suppose we are dating, so it's not that bad right?…but you don't get to stare at them okay." She pulled off her shirt and twisted it to remove some of the water as she sat back down. He could not help but sneak a peak and she gave him a harsh reminder from her eyes.
"Oh, I wasn't staring."
"I know," She snuggled closer. And that was when the Calvary arrived, though she was not too happy to be seen half naked.
After Zoe had been dropped off, Wade snuck back over to her place to make sure she was okay. "I'd like it if you stay, but…"
"On the couch, I know," he said it rather in depressed mood and she stared.
"Can you promise to keep your hands above my waist and keep your pants on?" She asked.
"Well…yeah I'm managing so far aren't I?"
"Well…" She thought for a second. Maybe this was too soon. But it's not like they were going to have sex, just sleep in the same bed. IT would be fine. IT would actually be nice. "You can share the bed with me." His eyes lit up like a little boy getting another Thomas Train piece.
"I promise," He held his hands up, "No hanky panky, just cuddling, if that's alright."
"Yes," She agreed with a smile. She went and changed out of wet clothes and threw on a robe.
"Ah doc, you got wear something else under that. I won't be able to help myself then, it won't be fair." She grinned at him as she grabbed a T-shirt and shorts, "Tease."
When she changed into that, she heard a knock at the door. "Doc just ignore it, you need to get some sleep, and I can't wait put my hands on you." She turned to look at him, "In a respectful manner like…way." She could not help another slip of her lips forming a smile.
"I'll be right back," and she kissed him on the cheek, "You're sweet in your own way." She disappeared.
Zoe was surprised to see George at her door, "Hi," he said.
"What are you doing here?" She stared in disbelief.
"I just need to tell you that wedding is off. I have feelings for you, I thought I could push them away, but I can't, seeing you with Wade made me realize how much I care for you." She stared like a bug-eyed bullfrog. Not sure what to say, Wade was in her bed being all sweet and George was…the wedding was off! Her brain was still trying to sort through all the information when he kissed her.
"We'll talk about this more in the morning, okay, why don't you sleep on it?" With that he disappeared as if he had just brought her a cup of coffee. Sleep on it? She thought to herself. She made her way back to the room and was staring at Wade.
"Come on," he patted the bed, "Sexy, give me sugar."
"Uh," She was still in shock mood as she made her way over to the bed. She began to registered what was going on when Wade put his arms around her, above her waist as promised. She leaned into his warmth. What was she going to do? She had feelings for George, but she had already started to fall for Wade who was treating her just like she was….the most valuable thing to him. She could not help but be awed by the way the normally flirtatious, carefree, and risk taking Wade was treating her with such care, but at the same time never seeming to hide his desire for her. It was so nice…and she did want to give in but oh how she wanted George.
