Chapter 3: The Activities Fair
All three of the siblings quickly fell in love with the campus as they walked through the Activities Fair. The trees and old brick buildings brought a lot of character to the place, which Beca couldn't help but draw a sense of comfort from. It reminded her of all the trees of her hometown, which was one of the things she loved best about Oregon. No matter how ugly it was inside of where she had lived, one peek outside the window and a look at the majestic trees would give her a little more hope that she needed to keep going. They gave her strength, which sounds strange, but looking at how strong a tree was just amazed her. She could hit it or throw something at it and it still stood unmoving and unwavering. The trees were so thick that it could take a while just to cut one down as if they were saying to whoever dared destroy them that they weren't going out without a fight. It's how Beca lived her life and so the trees brought her a sense of comfort. And as she took a look at the trees around her she knew she could make it here in Barden just like she had made it back home.
She felt a twinge of bitterness at the knowledge that her father had lived here this whole time while she was stuck in a barely livable apartment back in Oregon. It was unfair in so many ways and she wondered what she had done to deserve such treatment. The thought was quickly replaced by warmness as she felt Sophie squeeze her fingers gently in her excitement. Her little sister was buzzing with energy as she took in her new environment and even though Matt was trying to not be as obvious as Sophie, Beca could tell he was just as excited. These two made all the crap she had gone through worth it. She wouldn't trade them for this place ever, so she let the bitterness fall from her shoulders easily. Her siblings were more important than that.
They made their way through the many booths, but nothing really jumped out at Beca. The only thing she was really interested in was music and so she kept an eye open for anything to do with that. Not that she had time to join a club or anything, but they were also advertising some jobs at this fair too so she'd keep an eye open and hopefully she would get lucky and find a job that had something to do with music.
"Hey, Becs, look a DJ booth." She followed Matt's finger as he pointed towards a booth with the big letters spelling out DJ. A smile came unbidden to her face.
"Awesome! Let's go check it out!" Beca patted his back as they made their way over to the table, tugging Sophie along by their joined hands. Once they got there and she started reading a brochure that was laid out on the table she quickly got confused.
"Ah yeah, DJ…Deaf Jews…oh…wika wika boom…" Beca's eyes came up at the voice that was being directed at her. Sophie and Matt came closer to her side subconsciously. They always did when someone they didn't know started talking to them. She took in the blonde and her accent. Was that Australian? Then actually taking in what she said Beca frowned. Deaf Jews? That was like false advertising. Sighing in disappointment she caught the end of the blonde's next sentence. "…not a real word, but keep trying! You will get there."
"Actually that is a real word. It's Hebrew. Are there not many Jewish people where you're from?" Matt spoke up from next to her. She smirked at what he said. He was usually so soft spoken, but every once in a while he would surprise her by speaking up. It usually happened when someone else was being picked on and of course when she was close by to have his back.
"Hey, look at what you got there, two little dingoes!" The girl exclaimed and Beca's smirk turned into a frown. What did that mean?
"What's a dingo?" Sophie asked looking up at her.
"It's a small animal that is native to Australia, kind of like a dog." Matt explained. Her smirk came back at his explanation. Yes, her little brother was a genius and she couldn't be more proud.
"Ooh, a smart dingo." The girl said with a warm smile at someone knowing something about her home country.
"Hey! I'm not a dog!" Sophie spoke up indignantly.
"Whoa, there little terdburger. I didn't mean it in a bad way. Dingoes are feisty little animals but also very strong." The girl tried to defend herself.
"And technically a dingo is from the wolf family. Although Australians usually consider them pests." Matt supplied helpfully. Beca just stood in the middle of all this nonsense and smiled at the absurdness of the conversation.
"What's a terdburger?" Sophie asked after that looking to Matt for an answer. It looked like she was okay with being a part of the wolf family and she just ignored the pest comment.
"That one I don't know." Matt answered her with a frown on his face because he usually knew the answers to all of her questions.
"Aaaahhhh yeah! Stumped ya, little genius!" The girl hollered with a dramatic fist pump in the air. Beca just rolled her eyes.
"Seriously? He's nine years old and you're excited that he didn't know what terdburger meant? It's not even a word, you just made it up." Beca finally came into the conversation.
"Yeah, but he's like supersmart." The girl said seriously as if it was a real achievement outsmarting a nine year old, which Beca did know when it came to Matt was a great achievement. She really wanted to laugh, but kept her amusement at bay for the time being since she didn't really know what to make of this girl.
"So are you being mean to us or not?" Sophie asked just utterly confused by this point.
"Course not!" The blonde said smiling brightly. "I'm Fat Amy, by the way." She introduced and held out her hand to Sophie first. Sophie scrunched up her nose and looked to Beca for confirmation on whether or not to shake this girls hand. Beca nodded that it was ok, so Sophie took it politely.
"I'm Sophie. You're names Fat Amy?" Sophie asked while she leaned into Beca's side. It was her favorite spot and Beca without even thinking about it placed her arm around her shoulders in comfort.
"Yeah." Amy answered as she put her hand towards Matt.
"I'm Matt. You're mom named you Fat Amy?" He asked curiously. Beca could see he was a little amused by Amy too.
"Well, no I guess not." The girl scratched her head in thought and then held out her hand to Beca.
"Beca. So why do you call yourself Fat Amy then?" Beca asked to try and solve the mystery.
"So, twig bitches like you don't call me it behind my back." Amy answered matter-of-factly. Beca sighed a little in annoyance as she heard the curse word. She didn't really mind it herself, but she didn't like those words being said in front of Matt and Sophie.
"Dude, language." Beca said as she nodded meaningfully at Matt and Sophie. Amy looked a little sheepishly at her. "Sorry, but it's the truth."
"That's mean. I would never call you fat behind your back. I'll just call you Amy." Sophie said resolutely. Beca smiled down at her proudly.
"Aww thanks, shortstack!" Amy said affectionately as she looked down at the little girl. "I have to say you two are like my two favorite kids that I've ever met. Well, favorite kids with all their fingers." Amy said as she held up her own fingers in demonstration. She did indeed have them all and Beca was sure it was meant as a good thing.
"Thanks." Matt said unsurely and he gave Beca a sideways glance. She could only shrug at his unasked question because she had no idea if that was a compliment.
"You know I've been around this whole fair, so if you're looking for something to do with DJing I think the closest thing is the singing groups or the radio station. That would be my best bet anyway." Amy said helpfully and for just a brief second Beca let herself relax around this new girl and a smile twitched at the corner of her lips.
"Thanks. I really appreciate it. That'll save us from having to look through this whole place." Beca said gratefully.
"Oh, yeah no problem. It was good meeting you all! I'll probably see you around. Here let me give you my number." Amy told them happily. Beca was a little reluctant, but figured why not? This girl looked like she knew a lot about what was going on around campus and that could come in handy later. She took out her cell phone and typed in Amy's number as she told her. She knew she should give the girl her number too, but she didn't just hand her phone number to anyone so she just smiled awkwardly.
"All right, see you guys later." Amy held out both of her fists for Matt and Sophie to bump and then gave a little wave to Beca before she turned and walked away.
"She was a little strange, right?" Matt asked and Beca smirked but nodded a little bit.
"I like her." Sophie spoke up and Beca just chuckled in response while Matt shook his head with a smile of his own. The trio decided to continue on their way after the odd encounter.
"Ok, I think the radio station booth is our best bet-" Beca was interrupted.
"Oh my gosh! Quidditch! Can we go check it out? Please?" Matt just about shouted as he looked at her pleadingly. How could she say no to that face and he really never asked for much, so she nodded, "yeah, I guess." He was already racing over to the field where a bunch of college students were playing, what she assumed was quidditch, before she even finished talking. Really? College students playing quidditch? It's not like they could actually fly and then they didn't even have rings for goals, it was more like just an area to throw the ball through. But she guessed it was a muggle's way of playing. Oh gosh she thought to herself, she had spent too much time around Matt and his obsession with anything Harry Potter. Ok, it was books in general he was obsessed with, but Harry Potter was definitely on his top ten of favorite books.
She watched with a small smile as she shook her head. Sophie had run after her big brother even though she only knew a little bit about the game. She did see the movies though, so at least Sophie had that going for her. She followed along only slightly begrudgingly because she really couldn't begrudge her siblings anything that made them so happy. As she was following she had to stop because she almost got trampled by a group of frat boys. She grumbled to herself and became quickly impatient since she couldn't really see her brother and sister through the crowd. She knew Matt was probably on the field already, but Sophie wasn't as fast or coordinated.
She barely caught it but she saw Sophie turn her head to look at her and that's when it all went in slow motion. She was already pushing her way through the crowd as she saw her little sister run into something or trip, she wasn't quite sure yet, and then Sophie fell to the ground hard. Shoving some guy out of the way she finally was able to clearly see what was going on.
Sophie was on the ground looking up at some guy that was yelling at her while tears fell from her eyes. Beca saw red. No one did that to either her brother or her sister. She started to run but it seemed like it was too far away and too many people were in her way. That's when she saw Matt show up and step between his sister and the guy yelling, "Hey, don't yell at my sister like that!" She had never felt more proud of the boy, but now she had to worry about both of them. Why did it seem like she was so far away from them? "No" she let out on a breath, it looked like the guy was going to grab Matt! She couldn't let that happen. Wouldn't let that happen but she was too far.
Then her savior came in the form of a redhead that got right in between her siblings and the guy. She shoved the guy in the chest and Beca heard her yelling at him, "What the hell is the matter with you? They're just kids!"
"She ran into me! And what are those stupid br-" The guy yelled back while pointing his finger in the redheads face and finally Beca was there easily grabbing the guys hand that had been waving dramatically and twisting it behind his back, cutting off the guys words. The guy yelped in slight pain not expecting the move at all. He had to bend at the waist to try and ease the twinge coming from his shoulder.
"It's rude to point your finger in someone's face." Beca growled into his ear. She was so pissed off at this guy and could have easily pummeled him, but she didn't like her siblings to see that kind of violence.
"It looks like someone has been drinking." Beca could smell the alcohol coming off of him and it made her sick, "No wonder you lost your temper." Beca's voice was calm, but also deadly. The guy stood stock still not even trying to fight her off. Even if he did all Beca had to do was twist his arm a little more and he would go down. She had the advantage.
"You don't look like you're over 21. Are you?" Beca asked already knowing the answer. He looked about her age and he was wearing a frat shirt. He was most likely joining a fraternity and they were hazing or whatnot.
"No." The guy bit out.
"I didn't think so. Drinking underage, disorderly conduct, harassing a minor…I could probably go on, but I think you get the picture." Beca smirked at him evilly.
"Here's what's going to happen, you are going to apologize and then get your ass out of here and I never want to see your face again. Am I clear?" She felt him struggle a little bit to get loose so she tightened her grip, "Are we clear?" she growled from deep in her throat.
"Yes." He squeaked out, the pain getting to him.
"Good." Beca stood him up and made him face her siblings. She shoved him a bit, but didn't let go of his arm.
"I'm sorry for yelling at you both. It was unnecessary and I can see now that it was all an accident." He looked from Sophie to Matt and Beca saw that he was sincere when he caught sight of the little girl and boy.
"Don't forget Red over there." Beca squeezed his arm.
"And I'm sorry for yelling at you too." He said again.
"Great, now that that's cleared up get your ass out of here." Beca shoved him in the opposite direction and he fell to one knee before he got up. He barely gave her a backward glance before he was off trying to get as far away as possible.
She waited a moment until he was out of sight before she finally turned around to look at Sophie and was a little surprised to see her in the arms of the redhead who had stopped the guy in the first place. Matt was right beside them with a hand on Sophie's back. She didn't really give anything else a second thought as she took in the tear tracks that stained Sophie's cheeks and when Sophie finally locked eyes with her, the little girl nearly jumped into her arms. She caught her securely and cocooned her in her arms as she felt the tiny sobs that wracked her little sisters body. Oh, now she really wished she had punched that guy. No one made her little sister cry. She sighed and let out the tension from her body knowing that would help Sophie relax. Then she started rubbing her back in soft circles and whispering reassuring words in her ear.
"It's ok, Soph, you know I would never let anything bad happen to you." Beca soothed her. After a moment her sobs began to slow down and her breathing became more even with only the occasional hiccup. Beca didn't loosen her hold and neither did Sophie. Looking over at Matt, "Hey, you ok?"
He nodded and leaned into her side. She brought the arm that had been soothing Sohpie around him for a moment to hug him. She brought her head down to whisper in his ear, "You did great. Thanks for stalling until I could get there." She brushed her lips against the top of his head as she leaned back up. He gave her a soft smile as she ran her fingers through his hair. "I'm really proud of you." After that he buried his head into her side and she knew he was trying to hide his tears from prying eyes. Her two little siblings had been through a lot in a short period of time. She took a breath and sighed disappointingly. So much for starting new.
Looking around her she saw that people had already disbursed and it was just them. Well, she thought it was just them until she was startled to find two shockingly blue eyes that were watching her closely. "Wow, you have really blue eyes." Beca blurted out without thinking. She mentally face palmed. She rolled her eyes at her idiocy, "But of course you know that because you own a mirror and know what color your eyes are."
She heard Matt snort next to her and smirked down at him, "Oh, sure make fun of me now." Beca teased but was brought back to those cerulean eyes when she heard a small laugh escape from the redhead. It was a nice sound she surmised.
She shook her head and lifted the corner of her mouth in a small smile, "Anyways, thank you. I appreciate you standing up for Sophie and Matt here."
She watched as the girl smiled back at her and how her eyes lit up further when she did. "It was no problem. That guy was a real jacka-" the girl cut herself off before she started cursing and smiled ruefully before she continued, "He was a real tool. I mean I saw the whole thing and it was clearly an accident."
"Yeah, it was. I should have been closer though. I'm sorry Soph." Beca whispered in her little sisters ear. "You've gotten too fast for me to keep up." Sophie brought her head back slightly to look up at Beca and Beca gave her a big smile. "There's my girl. Where have you been hiding, hmm?"
Sophie smiled softly at her, "I just got scared. That man was really big."
"Soph, you don't ever need to be scared, you know Becs would never let anybody hurt us." Matt told his little sister trying to reassure her. Sophie nodded, "I know, I just forgot for a second. Sorry." She mumbled as she brought her head back to the crook of Beca's neck.
"You don't ever have to apologize for being scared." Beca said vehemently. "But Matt's right. I won't ever let anything hurt you guys, but I also think we were lucky." Beca brought her attention to the redhead again who was smiling softly and pretending not to be listening in on their conversation. "I think we should say thank you to the nice lady for distracting the jerk long enough for me to tell him to get lost."
The bright blue eyes found hers again in surprise at being addressed and Beca couldn't help the smile that came to her face. Sophie and Matt both looked to the girl and simultaneously said, "Thank you."
"It was no trouble at all. I'd do it again in a heartbeat." The girl said genuinely and Beca noticed that Matt and Sophie smiled brighter at the sentiment. Beca got lost in those blue eyes for a moment until Sophie tugged on her shirt to get her attention.
"Sissy, my hands hurt." Sophie leaned back from Beca's embrace to show her little hands to her. They were a little red and some skin was peeled back, but no bleeding. Before Beca could say anything the redhead spoke up, "You know what, I have some water and ice right over here that I'm sure would help."
"Umm…" Beca wasn't used to people being so nice and helpful towards her so she was a little reluctant to accept, but one look at Sophie's hands and she was nodding, "…yeah, that would be great. Thank you." Beca said sincerely with a small smile. The girl just beamed in response and it left Beca a little lightheaded and she wondered how someone could be so happy. Matt nudged her and she realized she was supposed to be following the redhead who was making her way over to a booth. Right, move your feet, Mitchell, she thought to herself.
She watched as the redhead went straight for the cooler set up behind the booth and pulled out a couple of water bottles. She handed one to Matt and then one to Beca that was meant for Sophie.
"All right, Soph, I'm going to have to set you down for a minute so I can fix up your hands, ok?" Beca asked softly and Sophie nodded obediently. Beca set her down on top of the cooler and then crouched down so that she was on the same level as her. "Ok, let's see those hands."
Sophie held them out palms up towards her. They were a little red, but not the worst that she had seen from Sophie or Matt falling down. "All right, I'm going to pour some water on it and it might sting a little." Beca got the bottle ready and then took off the flannel shirt she was wearing and that just left her in her black tank top. "Ok, are you ready?"
"Yeah." Sophie said lowly, but prepared. Beca poured the cool water on Sophie's hands as gently as she could. She heard Sophie suck in a little breath and when she looked at her face she saw her biting her bottom lip, but otherwise she didn't make a peep. She was such a strong little girl and she couldn't help saying it out loud. "You're such a strong girl." Beca cooed softly and she saw the little smile that came to Sophie's face at the sentiment. "So very brave, just like your big brother." Even though she wasn't looking at Matt she knew he was smiling.
"All right, Matty, give us a good one." She knew by the statement that both of her siblings were immediately distracted from what she was doing and what had happened a few minutes ago. She saw the smile that bloomed on her little sisters face as she looked to her older brother. "Yeah, Matty, give us a good one!" Sohpie agreed excitedly. Clearly, she had forgotten about her hands for the moment, which was Beca's goal.
"Umm…okay…let's see..." And now she knew Matt was in a better frame of mind too. "Ooh, I got it! Did you know a cat sleeps up to 16 to 18 hours a day?"
"Oh, come on everyone knows that cats sleep a lot. You can do better than that." Beca scoffed good-naturedly as she stopped pouring the water on Sophie's hands. "Yeah, everyone knows that! Another one!" Sophie agreed. Beca chuckled as she heard Matt huff behind them in annoyance. She picked up her flannel shirt and gently wiped her little sisters small hands. She hated seeing them hurt even though she knew it was inevitable since they were kids. They both got scrapes all the time and she knew they needed them or else they would never get strong.
"Oh, I'm sure you two knew that they slept that much." Matt said sarcastically. Beca smiled because she actually didn't know they slept that much, but she just liked giving him a hard time. It made him think more and she praised him enough as it was anyway.
"Well, did you also know that cats have 32 muscles in each of their ears and that's how they hear so well?" A voice chimed in and Beca had almost forgotten she was there. The trio all looked at her a little bit dumbfounded because no one had ever played this game with them. Beca saw a light blush form on the redheads cheeks at the attention, which Beca could only smirk at.
"I did not know that. Did you know that Soph?" Beca asked as she finished drying her sisters hands. They were good for now and when they got back to their apartment she would put some cream just to make sure. Beca poked Sophie in the stomach and she giggled as she shook her head. Her hands were all but forgotten already.
"Nope!" Sophie said as Beca stood up and Sophie was quickly attached to her side and like always Beca's arm came around her.
"I knew that!" Matt said happily as he beamed up at the redhead, finding a kindred spirit to his love of facts and figures, especially when they were about animals. Beca punched him lightly on the arm, "Of course you did, you're a genius." Beca noticed that his cheeks colored lightly at the compliment and she was sure he had formed a little crush on the redhead. Beca couldn't really blame him. She was beautiful and kind and she had a genuineness about her that reeled you in.
"A genius, huh? So are you the one that's coming to attend Barden then?" The redhead asked causing Matt to blush harder and Sophie to laugh. Beca just smirked and let the kids soak up the attention.
"No, silly, Sissy's the one that's going to Barden." Sophie said after she finished laughing.
"But, Matt is smarter than me, so I'll get him to help me with my homework." Beca added as she winked down at Matt. With Beca's comment it seemed to help him get his blush under control and he smiled up at her gratefully.
"I think that's cheating." The redhead interjected playfully and Beca couldn't help but notice the easiness that came with this conversation. She had never felt that way with anyone and she knew her siblings felt it too by the way they were so relaxed.
"Well, I won't tell anyone if you won't." Beca responded and she was surprised to hear the flirtiness in her tone and hoped no one else picked up on it. She had never done this before and it was making her feel a little unsettled.
"Hmm, I don't know…" The redhead tapped her chin thoughtfully.
"Ok, you've left me no choice. Guys give her the face." Beca said conspiratorially to Sophie and Matt who both gave their best puppy dog eyes with a little pout. It was adorable and she found not many people could say no to that face. The redhead looked between the two and Beca could tell she was trying not to give in and then Sophie and Matt said, "Please?" It was the cherry on top and the redhead threw her hands up in the air.
"That is so not fair!" Beca could only smirk but could feel it turn into a smile as she heard the girl laugh.
"Nice job, guys!" Beca high fived both of them and she saw the redhead shake her head at their antics, but she had the most beautiful smile on her face and Beca couldn't help admiring it. Beca chuckled as she looked away from that penetrating stare and looked down at the smiles on both of her siblings faces.
"Well, thanks again for all your help. We really appreciate it." Beca said sincerely.
"Yeah, thanks!" "Thanks!" Matt and Sophie chimed in too.
"It was nothing, really." The redhead said again.
"Even so, if you ever need anything just you know send out the bat signal or something and I'll help you out." Beca wished she would stop saying such stupid things. A Batman reference, really? She needed to start hanging out with more adults.
"You know, now-a-days I think they just use cell phones." The girl giggled and Beca thought she wouldn't mind being stupid if it got this girl to make that sound again. It was refreshing and cute. Yeah, she thought cute, this girl was doing strange things to her.
"That's true." Beca nodded not knowing what else to say. They stood there awkwardly for a moment before the redhead rolled her eyes and held out her hand. Beca looked down at it confused.
"Your cell phone? So I can give you my number." Beca really wanted to smack herself in the head for her idiocy. She didn't think it could get much worse than this and she was really hoping she wasn't blushing. From Matt sniggering next to her as she fumbled to get her phone out of her pocket she thought that wasn't likely. She finally got a hold of it and handed it over to the redhead. That should show Beca how different this girl was that she handed over her phone without a second thought. She didn't let anyone besides Sophie or Matt touch her phone.
After a few button clicks the redhead was done and she smiled satisfactorily as she handed the phone back. Their fingers brushed for not even a full second but Beca could feel it. Like really feel it and her eyes sought out cerulean blue and she found herself entranced for a moment. Matt nudged her bringing her back to the present. Again.
"Right, well I guess we'll see you around then." Beca stuffed her phone back in her pocket.
"Yeah, I should get back to Aubrey anyway." The redhead gestured to her blonde friend who was handing out flyers. Beca nodded but they both just stood there until Matt had to nudge her again to get her attention. She shook herself out of it with a rueful smile. She was losing it.
"Bye then." She said with a small smile and the girl gave her one more heart stopping smile and it grew even wider when Matt and Sophie spoke too, "Bye!" "See you later!"
"You guys take care of yourself." The girl said warmly and she gave Beca one more smile before she turned to walk back to the blonde. Sophie tugged on her shirt bringing Beca's attention down to her instead of watching the redhead walking away.
"Sissy, can I have a piggy back ride?" Beca smiled.
"Of course." She bent down so Sophie could climb on her back and hoisted her up as she stood. Sophie held on tight and Beca gave one last look at the redhead before she looked down at Matt.
"So who's ready to go check out some quidditch?" Beca asked. He smiled up at her and slipped one of his fingers into her belt loop. It was one of the things he did when he needed to be close to her but couldn't hold her hand.
"Let's go!" Sophie said from over her shoulder as she squeezed Beca and she chuckled.
"All right, let's go!" And the trio walked over to the field all feeling excited about meeting a certain redhead. A redhead who's bright blue eyes were following the trio as they walked away.
