Day 5: "Request"
*YOU GOT MAIL!*
I opened up my pink colored phone as I heard its ringtone, and I've known who the sender was from the moment it rang. I was dead on; it was a message from my classmate, my band's eccentric guitarist, a track field running club's member, and one of my best friends, Ayumi Takahara. She had been sending me emails since she caught me with Katsuragi during that incident at the infirmary yesterday, encouraging me to go out with Katsuragi with every ounce of her free-time. Why would she do that? Why would she put me through such HUMILIATION?
To go out with him is an insult! He's the lowest of the low! Well, he did help me with the math when we were both late and made me a remarkably delicious lunch…but he's still the Otamega! Ayumi, despite her knowing my opinion of the dweeb, will not spare me for even a moment! I move my thumbs with a pace and precision unmatched, embarrassment flushing my cheeks as I' reply with the exact same response as I have a few hours ago, before breakfast, and even several times last night.
"I do not like the Otamegane, Ayumi! He's annoying and he's not my type!"
But this time, maybe it's going to be a little bit different because there's something that had been irking my mind since the day I caught her and Katsuragi sitting together near the track field. I have this feeling that she's been hiding her own feeling with these encouraging emails because she's afraid that I would be heartbroken, which I wouldn't be!
"How about you go out with him instead of me? You're much closer to him than me, right?"
… I also added a teasing.
"Could it be you who's raring to go with him? LOL! JK!"
Adding a wink smiley and… Sent!
Hmm, come to think of it. Maybe it is true that Ayumi actually has a feeling towards Katsuragi. She was a little shocked when she saw me and him enjoying lunch together on an infirmary's bed…well, it's only natural for someone to be shocked, seeing a man and woman sitting on a bed together…but she was frozen there. Within that brief second, her eyes were deadpan like she's saw a ghost and of course, her request to meet me afterschool in our clubroom was the main reason why I think Ayumi might think of Katsuragi as something more.
…
Yesterday, I did as Ayumi asked me to: I walked hesitantly to our classroom afterschool, but instead of walking in, I stopped shy of the door and peeked in. The room was dead silent; I knew that it wasn't time for practice yet, so it was only natural that it would be quieter than usual, and yet the dead silence along with some unknown cause radiated an eerie aura, hanging over the room like a miasma. I found Ayumi sitting at the very center of the clubroom, playing her guitar to kill some time while waiting me to come, and I knew immediately that something was off. The autumn sunlight, which was illuminating the room, had made a backlight on Ayumi's body, but I could still recognize her expression at that moment. She was smiling, and yet, the melody she was playing struck me as somber, almost depressing.
I stopped peeking from the sliding door and decided to walk in to greet Ayumi before the rest of the members arrived.
"Ayumiiii~~"
"Ah, Chihiro! You're finally here!" she stopped her hands from playing her guitar and rose up from her chair to greet me.
"I'm sorry for making you waiting!" I laughed hesitantly, "I had to go back to take my bag and guitar at our class, and you know, I can't run as fast as 'Maijima High's Bullet Train'," I dropped my guitar onto a nearby desk. Ayumi didn't respond, but rather she chuckled before she placed her guitar on another desk.
"So, w—what is it Ayumi? The thing you wanted to talk about…?" my voice wavered slightly.
"… I thought you already know it…" She replied, her eyes looking at the ground.
At that time, I thought that I'd broken her heart because she thought that I was going out with Katsuragi. I was at a loss for words for a moment, and Ayumi's glare only grew more somber. I had to clear up that misunderstanding, the sooner the better.
"NO! I am not going out with him! So you don't have to be—"
"There's no need to lie, Chihiro. It's alright. You have my full support!" Ayumi suddenly looked up with me with a big yet rather gloomy smile.
I started to laugh, but shock hit me a moment after it sunk in.
"EEEEH!? Whaat!?"
…
That's what happened yesterday. Since then, she's been sending me emails to encourage me to get closer to the Otamega. Although I had told her that it was a huge misunderstanding, she still kept on sending me emails. Ayumi was one hell of a thickheaded person.
Suddenly, something bulleted from at the end of the hall, and before I could react, I heard her voice.
"Waa… waa… waaah! I can't stop! Kyah!"
*BUMP!*
Well, I guess Ayumi really did have a thick head. She not only crashed into a wall at top speed, she managed to get up – well, she still was dizzy and did have some trouble getting up, but she was still completely fine nonetheless – dust herself off, and walk up to me with no injury to anything but the cracked wall behind her. She then approached me, looking as lively as usual although she was still covered in a film of dust.
"Good morning, Ayumi!" I greeted her with a wave and an awkward smile.
"Ah. Ch—Chihiro~"
She approached me and bumped me with a teasing elbow, "How is it going with Katsuragi? Hmm?"
"For God's sake, Ayumi. We weren't like that! I've told you over and over!" I gave her a glare but I also feel my cheeks burn at the same time.
"Really? But you looked like you were being intimate with him yesterday!" Ayumi crossed her arms.
Ughh…could she get on my nerves anymore?! It should be her pursuing Katsuragi, not me! She never even calls him 'Otamega' anymore! She was the one sitting close to him near the track the other day! And I knew she wasn't right after school yesterday!
… Ah. I should just tell her that, shouldn't I?
I stopped in front of the door before we entered our classroom and held out my arm to block Ayumi, "Aren't you the one who should be going out with him? I mean, really. The Otamega and I weren't as close as you two were!"
"Wh—what are you talking about, Chihiro? Katsuragi and I? Close?" She said, blushing.
"Of course it has to be you, Ayumi! I know you weren't right yesterday; I could tell you weren't yourself. You don't even call him Otamega anymore!"
"Aa—aaah… But Chihiro, you are…"
She's in a pinch now! I have her cornered!
"I knew it! You actually have a feeling for him!" I pointed at her.
Checkmate!
*GARA* the sliding door suddenly opened next to us. I looked over suddenly.
Huh? It's Ka—
"O—OTAMEGA! Don't just appear like that!" I shouted.
"… Hmph, don't talk as if you're facing some random, unpredictable event. Now get lost," he replied and continued walking past Ayumi and I, without even twitching his eyes.
"Again, what are you blabbering!?"
He stopped and turned around, "Chihiro. Have you ever played a Pokemon game before?"
"Of course I have!"
"Then it should be easier for you to understand this. When you encounter a trainer on a route and an exclamation mark appears over their head before you're forced into engaging in battle," said him, closing his eyes while fixing his glasses, "That is what I meant."
"Ah, that. Huh…"
It was strange. Now that I thought about it, it felt weird when I understood a conversation with Katsuragi about a game. I guess only those with a really dull childhood life had never played a classic game like Pokemon, but nonetheless, I just talked to a very high-level gamer that considered himself a 'God' (so he says). Hmm? Why did Ayumi smile cheekily?
I knew what she was thinking, but the moment I had to corner her about her feelings was long lost. I would just go to my seat.
I threw my face away from Katsuragi and then walked into the class. Man, with only minutes before the bell, we weren't even standing in the classroom yet!
"We—well! I'm going, Ayumi!" I slid the door shut, feeling somehow ticked off.
"C—Chihiro! Mou…" Ayumi said behind this class' door. Huh? Did Ayumi say something? I shrugged it off; I was in no mood right now to contend with the issue any further.
I finally sat on my usual seat and greeted Elsie, who had been looking at me since I've arrived with gleeful eyes that honestly started to tick me off, "Why are you looking at me like that, Elly?"
"Nawh, it's nothing, Chihiro-san" Elsie was smiling really big.
"Hmm... Really?" I looked deep into Elly's eyes. Her eyes' focus was averted when a gentle voice suddenly echoed.
"Chihiro."
I turned from Elly and found her older brother again, standing behind me with no expression as usual, "Huh? Katsuragi? Aren't you with Ayu..."
"Let's go on a date tomorrow."
…..wait….WHAT?! I cleaned my ears quickly for good measure, did a double take, and pinched my arm to make sure I wasn't having another nightmare.
"DATE?!"
I somehow managed not to scream there. Had I screamed, everyone in this class would be seeing this huge misunderstanding! It took every fiber of my being to hold it back, however.
"You heard right. Tomorrow's the weekend. Let's go somewhere, wherever you want."
Behind him, I saw my best friend, Ayumi, who slipped into the classroom unnoticed by me until now, make a 'peace' sign with her hand. Did she just set this up? What is she up to? Isn't she closer with Katsuragi? I thought I managed to prove that much in the hallway, and yet…why is she desperately throwing him onto me?
... I can't make sense of what's going on right now. It's just too weird!
"So? Would you accept my request?" he asked, nonchalantly as usual.
What should I do? It's Katsuragi: the anti-social, questionably human who dragged me to his own family's problematic shopping; who abandoned me and his sister at the market, forgetting about us as he bought stacks of games; who got me drenched in the rain by the end of that day carrying groceries that he should've been carrying himself! He's rotten to the core!
…And yet…
I was conscious enough that my thoughts were clearly saying a big 'NO', knowing it's Katsuragi who asked me, and yet…
…and yet…and yet…
…and yet what I said was…
"A—alright…"
