"Anna! Get down from there!"
"Huh?!"
The redheaded young woman spins on her heel atop the bannister of the spiral staircase where she waits, all smiles and oblivious to her older sister's concern.
"Geez, you took forever getting ready! C'mon, I'm hungry and breakfast is waiting!"
"Not until you get down from there. Now," Elsa commands again, but Anna only frowns.
"Why?"
"For one it's not proper and for another you could fall!"
"Now that's just silly! I've played on this staircase for years and lived! Watch this!"
Elsa's breath seizes in her chest as she watches her little sister spin again and dance about the railing with a grace more suited to an acrobat. She'd done this for years? She'd been locked up in her room for Anna's safety, and here she'd been endangering it on a daily basis?
Anger crackles through her like thin ice, but too late she realizes the ice has actually escaped and is spreading, reaching for the stairs and Anna.
"No, no, no!" she hisses, hastily trying to pull it back in, but too late.
It slides onto the railing just as Anna steps. In quick succession she slips, flails, yells, and falls.
"Anna!"
Just as quickly an icy wind bellows, pushing her back up and over the banister, right into Elsa's arms.
They stagger together, but stay standing as Anna huffs, "Phew! That was close one!"
"Are you okay?" Elsa asks over her, releasing her sister to hold her at arms length, worried eyes searching.
"Sure! You caught me, why wouldn't I be?"
Because I didn't last time.
It's on the tip of Elsa's tongue, but she stops herself. That is a story for another time, not the day after they've been reunited after so long, when their bond is tender, but tenuous.
"Just- Just please be more careful? For me? I can't be worried that you're going to fall off the roof when I'm in the middle of trade negotiations."
"That was one time! Who told you-"
"When did you- Never mind, I don't want to know. Please, Anna…"
"Okay, okay. I promise I won't go swinging from the rafters unless you're there to catch me.
"That's not what I- No, fine. Thank you."
"Great! Let's go eat! I'm starving! What do you like to eat for breakfast, anyway? I love anything with chocolate but…"
Allowing Anna to hook her arm and lead her down the stairs, she talks the entire way there, but Elsa only smiles, listening to her jabber away and nodding or shaking her head when appropriate.
She might have slipped last time, but Elsa swore right then and there she never would again.
