Chapter Seven
Miraz stood on a balcony with Prunaprismia, the baby boy in his arms. He spotted Glozelle and his men returning, and handed the baby to his wife. He walked into the stables. Miraz frowned when he saw a prisoner with a cloth over it. He went to remove it, but Glozelle stopped him.
"Wait, my lord! It is not what you think" He said. Miraz sighed and turned to look at the general.
"Then what is it?" He asked.
"We're not exactly sure" Glozelle replied. He nodded to a soldier, who then removed the cloth. Miraz gaped at Trumpkin.
"Impossible" Miraz said in disbelief.
In the Great Hall, the Telmarine lords debate.
"I warned this council when it put its trust in Miraz… there would be consequences" One of the Lords, Sopespian said to the council. Another Lord, Raviel, shook his head.
"No, no. We cannot accuse the Lord Protector without proof!"
"How long are we going to continue to hide behind that excuse? Until every seat in this chamber is empty?" Lord Derrin asked.
The doors opened and Miraz entered the room, and looked around at the rest of the Lords.
"Lords of the council, my apologies for being late. I was not aware we were in session" He frowned, accusingly. Sopespian scoffed.
"No doubt you were otherwise occupied"
"My lord?" Miraz raised an eyebrow.
"Ever since the death of Caspian the ninth, you have behaved as if you were king. And now it seems behind these walls, even Prince Caspian has gone missing" Lord Raviel said, concerned.
"My deepest condolences, Lord Miraz. Imagine losing your nephew, the rightful heir to the throne, on the very night your wife has blessed you with a son" Sopespian said, mockingly. Miraz bowed, though his eyes seemed to burn through Sopespian's skull.
"Thank you, Lord Sopespian. Your compassion is a boon in such troubled times" He replied.
"I trust you can tell us how such a tragedy could have occurred" Sopespian said, smirking.
"That is the most disturbing news of all. Our beloved Caspian was abducted… by Narnians!" Miraz told the council. The council was in an uproar over the statement.
"You go too far, Miraz! You expect us to stand by while you blame such a blatant crime on fairy-tales?"
Miraz signaled to Glozelle, and he opened the door. Two soldiers brought in Trumpkin. The Telmarine lords gasped
"We forget, my lords… Narnia was once a savage land" Miraz reminded the council. "Fearsome creatures roamed free. Much of our forefather's blood was shed to exterminate this vermin. … Or so we thought. But while we've been bickering amongst ourselves, they've been breeding, like cockroaches under a rock. Growing stronger. Watching us. Waiting to STRIKE!" Miraz hit Trumpkin, which displaced the gag.
"And you wonder why we don‟t like you" Trumpkin said bitterly.
"Well I intend to strike back. Even if I have to cut down the entire forest. I assure you. I will find Prince Caspian, and finish what our ancestors began" Miraz said.
Luna, with her head bandaged, opened her eyes. She sat up and noticed that Caspian was lying next to her, eyes closed. She quickly checked his leg and saw that it was bandaged. She breathed a sigh of relief.
"This bread is so stale" She heard a voice from the other room.
"I‟ll just get him some soup then" Another voice replied.
"You said you were going to get rid of them"
"No, I said I‟d take care of them"
"Well, I don‟t think I hit her hard enough"
"Nikabrik!" The other voice scolded, "don't you know who she is?"
"She's a Telmarine, that's what she is. Same with the boy" Nikabrik replied.
"The boy is, yes, but we can‟t kill him now, not after bandaging his leg. It would be like murdering a guest. As for her, She is the one we have been waiting for"
"What are you on about, Trufflehunter?" Nikabrik asked.
"don't you remember the legends. She's the Princess of the Moon. Sister of Artemis, our leader" Trufflehunter replied.
Luna made her way into the next room.
"That's right, I am" She said. "Is my brother alive then"
"Yes dear" Trufflehunter replied. "We must take you to him. He has longed to free you from your prison for many centuries"
"I know" Luna replied. "Does he know I made the call?"
"I would imagine so" Nikibrik replied, crossing his arms. "I'm sure everyone in Narnia heard it" Luna frowned at Nikibrik, but said nothing.
"The boy is with me, you are not to harm him, is that understood" She said, drawing her self up and staring straight at the dwarf. He scowled but nodded.
Just then, they heard a groan come from the back room. Caspian came around the corner, limping, and froze, when he saw them.
"Wh-what are you?" He stammered.
"It‟s funny. You‟d think more people would recognize a badger when they saw one" Trufflehunter replied. Luna hid a smile and the young boy frowned.
"No, I mean… You‟re Narnians. You‟re supposed to be extinct" He said, sitting at the table.
"Sorry to disappoint you" Nikabrik said gruffly. Trufflehunter placed two bowls of soup on the table for Luna and Caspian.
"Here we are. Still hot" He said.
"Who are you, boy?" Nikibrik asked.
"I‟m Prince Caspian… the tenth" Caspian replied nervously.
"What are you doing here?" Luna placed a protective arm around Caspian.
"He rescued me from my prison" She said. "He is here because he is the rightful heir to the throne and Miraz wishes to kill him" Caspian nodded.
"My uncle will not stop until I am dead" He looked frightened at the thought.
"He will not hurt you" Luna replied fiercely. "I won't let him"
