Chapter 5 - A Storm is Coming
"Everyone have their tanks secured?" Cheyenne asks, as she clipped the buckle on Tony's life vest.
"Yup!" All the avengers said in unison. "Remind me again why Tony has to wear such a silly contraption?" Steve asks, chuckling under his breath.
"I can't swim very well, Sherlock." Tony said, smacking his head on his forehead. "Personally, I think this look could work for me!" Tony adds, as he pretends to walk down an imaginary catwalk, showing off his yellow, rubber life vest.
"Whatever you say," Steve says, walking away cooly, but still chuckling under his breath.
"Okay, now that we got everyone set to dive, we should talk about what our plan is!" Steve shouts out to the rest of the Avengers.
"We have a plan? Wow I wasn't informed of this," Dr. Banner said. If you know one thing about the Avengers it's that they never made plans. They didn't plan, they just did. They just went into action.
"Well, now we do," Loki says. He drops a hard-cover journal onto the table in front of the Avengers. The boat that they borrowed from Cheyenne's Papi's friend jerked a little, and the book fell off the table. When Loki bent to pick it up, Thor smacked Loki on the bottom and laughed. All the other Avengers laughed too at Thor's clever practical joke.
"Haha, very funny, Thor..." Loki says as he rolls his eyes at his brother. "Seriously now we have to follow this plan that Cheyenne and I put together if we want to know that is in that underwater tunnel. The tunnel might lead us to the Tesseract! You saw the stones that were filling the tunnel, they have been near the Tesseract's power. How else would they be glowing like that?"
"Maybe they are magic stones from an alien planet. Ooooooh..." Tony says, waving his arms in the air like a he was a ghost.
"Hey, bro, remember we are aliens. Aliens don't act like that. No cool bro." Thor says, crossing his arms and glaring at Tony.
Tony panicked and says, "Um, er, I just remembered I have to be somewhere very important right now, so, bye!" He tried to run away from Thor, but Thor caught Tony's sleeve. The two Avengers got into a big fight, and Dr. Banner and Steve cheered them on the sidelines. Loki smacked his forehead again. He was getting a permanent red mark on his forehead from the multiple times he had smacked his head before.
"Wasn't the time they spent for team bonding supposed to make them work better as a team? Well, the team bonding failed." Loki says, as Cheyenne put her hand on his shoulder as a reassuring gesture.
"Aww, pobrecito, are your friends not listening to you?" Cheyenne asks Loki.
Loki smiles at Cheyenne. "No they aren't..." Loki answers, faking his best childish pouty face. "Can you help me?"
"Don't mind if I do!" Cheyenne exclaims. She walks straight into the fight and pulls Tony and Thor away from each other. Then, she yells in their faces, "Let's get down to business now, boys!"
That's my girl, Loki thought in his head. He was glad that Cheyenne couldn't read his mind, or else she probably would have known by now how he feels about her. Loki shook the image of her beauty out of his head, and pounded his fist onto the table. "Okay, Avengers, let's assemble."
After an hour of reading over the plan, which was surprising well laid out for Loki, (that was Cheyenne's doing), the Avengers hop off the boat and into the water. They are back at the area where the cliff that they jumped off is located. Loki finds the spot where the glowing stones are located, and he pulls them out of the hole that they are filling. Loki piles the glowing stones away from the hole so they won't fall back in. Once he had brought all of the stones out of the hole, he gestures for the others to follow him. Loki and the others turned on the lights that were strapped to their underwater light headbands.
Down, down they go. Loki and Cheyenne lead the others past caverns, seaweed, and all kinds of fish imaginable.
After a thirty minute or so swim, Cheyenne exclaims, "Aye, Dios mio!"
There in front of the Avengers is a ten-foot tall metal door. There was a big letter "A" embossed into the metal of the door. Loki swims closer to the door to examine it better. Thor follows after him, and they inspect the door together.
"What do you think the A stands for?" Loki asks Thor. "Hmm, I think it might stand for a person or a company that has secrets hidden down here behind this door. Only one way to find out!" Thor answers. Thor swims about twenty feet away from the door. He takes his hammer out of it's bag around his waist. Then, Thor charges at the metal door, the arm holding the hammer outstretched in front of him.
BAM!
Thor dents the door. He keeps hitting and hitting the door until the door finally bursts open.
The Avengers jump for joy and follow Thor into the dark chasm that is behind the door. They swim cautiously now because they know there are secrets hidden here. There could be guards everywhere in this place. They pass through an arch. When they reach the other side of the arch, a metal door encloses them inside the chasm that they were swimming into. Cheyenne and the others stifle their screams, as a whirring nose starts. Then, something like a drain sucks all the water out of the chasm.
The Avengers leave their gear on just in case the chasm were to fill up with water again. They walk up to the other metal door that is at the end of the chasm. There is a code blocking the door.
"What do we do?" Cheyenne says, panicked. "Anyone here good at cracking codes?"
"You have come to the right person, my lady" Dr. Banner says. He studies the metal door, and then he tries plugging codes into the code key pad that is next to the door. 856378, 345665, 324553... Dr. Banner tries over and over. First, he counts the number of tiles that are around the metal door. There are about four red tiles, five blue tiles, seven black tiles, twelve green tiles, and 9 yellow tiles surrounding the metal door. Dr. Banner tries plugging in 457129 into the key pad. BEEP. It doesn't work.
"Well, there's always plan B!," Dr. Banner exclaims. Dr. Banner takes off his equipment and thinks of something that makes him angry. Soon enough he transforms into the Hulk. The Hulk punches through the key pad, and then slams through the metal door. "URGHHH!" The Hulk growls.
"Good job, my green, giant friend!" Tony screams to the Hulk.
The Hulk turns back into Dr. Banner after a few seconds. And... Dr. Banner is naked.
"Oh no! I forgot to bring extra clothes to change into after I transform!" Dr. Banner screams, as he covers his unmentionables with his hands.
"It's okay, sport. I've got your back." Steve says as he goes behind a rock. He changes into his Captain America suit, and brings his other clothes out to Dr. Banner.
"Captain America is back, baby!" Tony comments. "Do you have to comment on everything?" Steve says, rolling his eyes at Tony.
Dr. Banner changes behind the rock and they are ready to go on. Thor leads the way this time, holding his flashing hammer out like a flashlight to light their way. At the end of a long tunnel, the Avengers came to a chasm. They hear voices in the chasm ahead.
The Avengers stop in their tracks and listen intently to what the voices are saying.
"The machine has been rebooted, master!"
"Brilliant! Now let's put the Tesseract in."
"You got it, buddy!"
"Don't ever call me buddy again!"
"Got it, master!"
"Let's sneak in" Cheyenne whispers. "This is going to sound weird, but I think I recognize one of those voices."
Thor gestures everyone to follow his lead. Inside the chasm, the Avengers could see a metal machine that reaches the ceiling of the chasm. The top of the machine glowed with a blue light, like the Tesseract. There in the middle of the machine is the Tesseract. Loki stares at the machine in disbelief.
"How did it get here of all places?" Loki whispers.
"Hmm, I don't know," Cheyenne answers. "Wait, I know that voice!" She exclaims.
Thor and Dr. Banner sneak deeper into the chasm and duck behind a rock to see the machine up closer. Steve and Tony sneak quietly up some stairs that they find fused into the chasm wall. Cheyenne and Loki peek from behind the rock they are hiding behind. Cheyenne gasps.
The voice she heard that she recognized belongs to her old best friend, Astrid Saldana.
Astrid used to go to the same high school as Cheyenne, Dos Ranchos High School. Astrid was the perfect student. She always wore her hair up in a tight bun and organized all of her notebooks in alphabetical order. Every teacher said positive things about her, every boy wanted to date her, and every girl wanted to be like her. Astrid was the "it" girl of the school. One day, Cheyenne was walking home when she spotted Astrid sitting under a tree that was at the park near Cheyenne's home. Cheyenne knew Astrid because she was so popular at school, but she had never talked to her before. Cheyenne asked Astrid what was wrong and Astrid said her mother had just died. Cheyenne knew how Astrid felt because Cheyenne had lost her madre when she was very young. Cheyenne and Astrid began to hang out with each other all the time and soon they were best friends. They even finished each other's sentences sometimes. Then, something unexpected happened. Cheyenne and Astrid had been planning on going to the same university after high school. Cheyenne worked hard to finish her senior year strong, but Astrid started not coming to school and her grades dropped. After Christmas break, Astrid was no where in sight. Cheyenne asked what happened to her at the school office and they said she just disappeared. Just like that, Astrid was gone. Now she is here, standing right in front of Cheyenne.
Without thinking, Cheyenne jumped out from behind the rock and yelled, "Astrid!"
Astrid turned around and stared at Cheyenne. "Cheyenne!"
The two girls started each other trying to figure out how to proceed. They hadn't seen each other in five years.
"I'm glad you're here, Cheyenne! I don't know how you got here, but this is a stroke of fate! Now you can help me with my master plan!" Astrid yells.
"And what is that plan?" Cheyenne asks her old friend.
"I am going to rid the world of all criminals once and for all!"
"Just think about it, I'll be a hero! All I have to do is get this machine working so I can blow up all the jails and everywhere there are criminals! It's a fool-proof plan!" Astrid screams out loud, her voice echoing through the room.
Cheyenne says, "You can't just go around blowing up buildings. You could hurt innocent people!"
Astrid's expression turns dark. She croons, "I am going to find the person who killed my mother first and destroy him."
"Will you help me?" Astrid asks Cheyenne.
What will Cheyenne chose?
