Chapter 6
The Choice
Choose wisely, Cheyenne's mind warned her. She knew she should listen to her head, but the feelings that were in her heart were tugging her back and forth.
Should I chose Astrid? I know she's evil, but I haven't seen her in so long. Maybe if I choose her I can change her mind and make her understand the error to her ways.
Should I chose the Avengers? I love them all very dearly now. They are good people and I wouldn't want to disappoint them for the world. And if I choose them, Astrid will destroy them with her deadly machine... I don't want to lose any of them especially Loki...
Cheyenne knew she had a hard decision to make. The Avengers stared her down and so did Astrid. Out of the corner of her eye, Cheyenne could see Tony Stark making the best puppy dog eyes he could. Astrid grinned at her as if she knew that Cheyenne was going to choose her. Denise, Astrid's hence-woman was waiting by the plug in the wall, ready to plug in the death machine that Astrid had created. She was waiting for Astrid's orders. As Denise got closer to the plug, sparks flew in her face and made her hair sizzle. Cheyenne chuckled a little under her breath at Denise's silliness. Then, she turned to look at Loki.
The look on Loki's face was hard to read, but Cheyenne saw one thing that was very clear on his face. It said: Don't leave me.
Then, Cheyenne made her decision.
"Astrid, I have decided that I will help you."
"I knew you would choose me!" Astrid clenched her fist in triumph. Cheyenne moved to stand next to Astrid. She didn't look at the Avengers because she knew if she did, their faces would haunt her mind forever.
"Cheyenne! Why?!" Stark screamed.
"It is time for you to leave," Astrid said, smirking. "I was nice enough to arrange an exit route for you already."
Astrid pressed a big, blue button. The floor beneath the Avengers lifted. Then, the invisible rocket became visible and enclosed the Avengers tightly inside it. Before Cheyenne could blink, the rocket jetted through the cave ceiling and flew up to the ocean's surface. Cheyenne waved to them as they flew up, and sent a message to them with her mind. I won't disappoint you.
Soon, the underwater cave began to fill with ocean water.
"Oops, I forgot about that. Minor setback." Astrid said, treading water. She swam back to a cabinet and took out yellow life vests and snorkeling equipment. She handed the equipment to Cheyenne and Denise. Once they were hooked up to the air, the threesome swam up to the ocean's surface.
"I cannot believe this!" Thor exclaimed.
"Ikr?!" Tony said.
"Speak English, Tony." Steve said.
"It means 'I know right?!' Man, you guys really need to get up with the times. Especially you, old man." Tony retorted.
Steve growled under his breath at Tony.
"Guys, we have to do something." said Doctor Banner.
"No duh, Captain Obvious." replied Tony.
"Just shut up everyone! You guys are so loud I cannot hear myself think!" Loki screamed at the Avengers.
Tony whispered something to Steve. What is wrong with this guy?
Steve said, "Well, he did just lose his girlfriend to an evil overlord."
Loki narrowed his eyes at Tony and Steve. "She is not my girlfriend."
At least not yet. I wanted her to be. Loki thought.
"Okay, I have a plan. First we have to track down where Astrid is going to set up her next lair. Then, leave the rest up to me."
"Ay Dios Mio*!" Astrid yelled. She was staring down into the depths of the ocean where her lair used to be. She looked so frustrated.
"Time to start looking for a new hideout. Well, I guess it was time anyway. I have been in that hideout for many years now." Astrid murmured to herself.
Still pessimistic I see, Cheyenne thought to herself, smiling a little. She was happy to be with her old friend. Cheyenne had missed Astrid so much. Now, it was time for Cheyenne to put her plan into action. Her real plan. The plan that she would use to kill two birds with one stone. She was going to change Astrid's ways AND not disappoint her new friends.
"How about we go to the secluded mountain shack that we used to go to as children. I never told the Avengers about it so I'm sure we won't need to worry about them showing up. Besides, whenever we went there, no one else would ever bother us. They are too afraid of the supernatural stories that were spun about the mountain." Cheyenne suggested.
"Esta idea es fantastica!*" Astrid exclaimed. She wrapped her arms around Cheyenne and squeezed her a bit. "I knew you would make a great addition to this team!"
"Yes, I thought that too all along!" Denise said happily. She swam over to Cheyenne and gave her a big hug too. "Welcome to the family!"
Astrid rolled her eyes at Denise.
The three girls swam to the shore and took off their gear. Then they walked to the parking lot of the beach and Astrid walked up to a shiny, silver Audi.
"Is that yours?!" Cheyenne asked.
"Get in. We're going shopping." Astrid said, smirking her nasty but strangely cool smirk. Beep beep.
Buzz. Buzz.
Tony's cell phone buzzed. Tony picked it up. He was surprised it was still in good condition after they went under the ocean. He flipped it open and saw NEW MESSAGE. Tony pressed the button to open the message. It was from Cheyenne.
"What?! She has the nerve to contact us after what happened?!" Stark yelled, startling the rest of the Avengers. They were all sitting in Cheyenne's Papi's house which apparently had become their official headquarters at the moment.
"What did she say?" Loki asked.
"She said that she won't disappoint us. She said she has a plan. And she left a clue. She said, the answer lies within the one closest to me." Tony answered, unsure of what to think about the clue.
"Well, she probably left us that ambiguous clue so that Astrid couldn't figure out what she was talking about if Astrid saw the message." Dr. Banner suggested.
"So, Cheyenne is like a double agent? That is pretty kick-butt if you ask me. Wow you have a smart AND sexy girlfriend, Loki. How did that happen?" Tony added.
Loki rolled his eyes at Tony. "You never take ANYTHING seriously, do you?" Loki answered.
Tony just grinned stupidly to himself.
"Whatever," Loki said rolling his eyes again, "We need to focus on the matter at hand. That is good news that Cheyenne is infiltrating from the inside for us. Who do you think is the closest to her? She did say we need to get the answer which I am assuming is the answer to where Cheyenne is going with Astrid and her goofy hence-woman."
The Avengers all turned to stare at Loki.
"Me? No, no, no. That cannot be right. I have no idea where she is." Loki said, shaking his head back and forth. He had nothing.
"Hmmmmmmmmm... HMMMMM..." Tony murmured as he was thinking.
"Can you think inside your head? Not outside your head? I know thinking is hard for you, but the rest of us don't have to hear it." Steve told Tony, grinning garishly.
"Oh whatever, old man. I'm not in the mood for fighting with you." Tony said, closing his eyes as if that would help him think.
"I got it!" Thor exclaimed.
"This coming from a man who is all brawn, no brain," Loki murmured to himself.
"I heard that!" Thor growled at Loki. "I know who is the closest to her."
"Who?" They all asked.
"Him!" Thor said, pointing at Cheyenne's Papi who was sleeping on the recliner chair in the corner of the room. A pool of drool was forming on the front of his shirt and he was snoring loud enough to make anyone's ears ring for hours.
"Wake him up!" Loki ordered.
Steve picked up his shield and hit it with his fist. The metal resounded and filled the room with a loud ring. Cheyenne's Papi coughed and then woke up, startled.
"Terremoto! Terremoto!*" Cheyenne's Papi screamed.
"No! It was just Steve hitting his shield!" Tony told Cheyenne's Papi. Tony gestured to Steve who was still holding his shield. Steve smiled cheekily and waved at Cheyenne's Papi. He calmed down a bit.
Cheyenne's Papi sighed. "You know, you kids almost gave me a heart attack! Jajajaja!"
Cheyenne's Papi started laughing at the ridiculous faces that all of the Avengers were making.
"Yes, we know, and we are sorry. But we need you. You can lead us to our next clue." Loki said.
"How can I help?" Cheyenne's Papi asked.
"Can you name any special places that Cheyenne used to go to? Maybe a place which is a secret to everyone else who doesn't know her as well as you do?" Loki asked.
"Hmmm... well there was the 'secret garden' that she made but it was just in our backyard so it wasn't that much of a secret... oh I know! La montaña de los espíritus*!
"What is that?" Dr. Banner asked Papi.
"Cheyenne used to go there a lot when she was little. She went a lot after her friend Astrid left. Come to think of it, I think they used to go there a lot together. They were brave girls. No one else wants to go there. There are ghastly stories about dark spirits that live in that mountain. The stories never scared the girls so they would go there to have fun and have adventures." Papi said.
"That's it! That's where we have to go!" Loki exclaimed. He jumped up onto his feet and ran to his room. In less then a couple minutes, he was out in the living room again all suited up to go on their next adventure.
"Mi hijo*! You are ready, aren't you? Why is that?" Cheyenne's Papi asked, smiling knowingly.
"Sir, I'm sure you know why already. I need to bring Cheyenne back to you safely and soon. Or else I might die. I cannot live without her. It is like she has become a part of me." Loki admitted, covering his face. He could feel his cheeks growing hot.
"Well, if that isn't a marriage proposal then I am Captain America!" Cheyenne's Papi answered, laughing heartily. Steve looked disapprovingly at Cheyenne's Papi.
"Save that for when you propose to my daughter." Cheyenne's Papi added. "You're not my type."
