Chapter 7 The serum

Howard's point of view

Memory 4

Early the next morning, we went to the S.H.I.E.L.D. location in Brooklyn. Senator Brandt and other government officials were waiting for us. There was one man that Peggy recognised and the colour dropped out of her face when she recognised him.

"What's wrong?"

"Howard, that man over there. The one with the dark framed glasses and the lighter in his hand? He is an operative for HYDRA, his name is Heinz Kruger, but he's been operating under the alias of Fred Clemson"

"All right"

I spoke to Colonel Phillips, Heinz Kruger was arrested and removed from the lab.

There were 7 Vita-Ray chambers in the room. An engineer at each.

"You don't mind if Obie and I inspect these first, do you, sir? Just to be sure that Heinz Kruger didn't interfere with them?"

"Of course we don't mind Mr Stark. Go ahead. That's a good idea"

Obie and I inspected the machines.

"Everything OK?"

"Yes sir."

"All right then… let us begin."

The process was incredibly uncomfortable, but once it was over, I felt healthier, stronger, better.

"Stark, how did you figure out that Heinz Kruger was HYDRA?"

"Peggy figured it out"

"I recognised him from the wanted posters in the office"

"I see, good work Agent Carter"

"Thank you, Agent Thompson"

"I would like to hear your thoughts on this situation at lunch."

"We should all go to lunch and celebrate our achievement"

"Peggy, I have reason to believe that Jack Thompson has gone rogue"

"What makes you believe that?"

"Well, he was livid when I told him you and Dr Carbonell had been chosen for the Super-Soldier program"

"Oh really? Did you explain to him why he couldn't be part of the program?"

"Yes, but he said I was lying."

"Do you think he's gone HYDRA?"

"Yes… I think he's the one who sent Kruger"

"I think you could be right"

"Dr Erskine is in a safe location, hiding. Daniel is with him."

"Is the location far from here?"

"Yes, it's on the other side of the world, that's all I'm allowed to tell you."

"OK"

Little did any of us realise that there would be far-reaching consequences of Thompson's actions.
