…
Logan and Kendall were silent as they just stared at each other, Kendall's words reverberating around the room, hanging in the air.
"…I kissed him."
Logan let the words sink to his core, shaking him, making him see red around the edge of his vision; he kept it at bay though, because he could still see Kendall, standing in front of him, the green irises pleading at him, begging him to forgive him for this mistake he had made.
And of course, he could.
Once he knew one thing.
"Did you like it?"
"What?"
"Kissing… him."
"No." Logan looked up, seeing the stark, bright honesty that shown in the green orbs. "He's a great friend, a good person, but he's not… he's not the one for me. One date was enough to prove that." Logan, his lips shaking, launched himself off the bed and pulled Kendall into his arms. "I'm so sorry for agreeing to do this. I'm sorry for suggesting it to him. I'm just…I'm so sorry."
"Shh," Logan crooned, pulling the tall teen to sit with him. "It's okay. I pushed you to do it. I just…I didn't want you to settle for me when there were more options out there for you." Kendall smiled as Logan cupped his hands around his face. "I do hope you know I'm going to punch him in the face for taking you out though." Kendall laughed lightly and gripped his hands tightly into Logan's shirt.
"Don't get in trouble. I just got you back."
"I signed a lease on an apartment today. Its two blocks, not even 10 minutes away really. Even if I get kicked out, I'll be with you." Logan ended his statement with a kiss to Kendall's lips, hoping to wipe the memory of Will's kiss away from his lips and from his mind.
Permanently.
…
"Huh," James said as he and Logan sat in their new apartment, unpacking; it had been only a handful of days since Kendall had gone out with Will, and all finally seemed to be settling down.
"What?" Logan asked, rifling through a box of his stuff, looking for something.
"Graduation's in a month." Logan stilled and looked at James, surprised; he had almost forgotten about graduation, but his brother was right – in about a month, they would be done with high school.
"You're right. Wow, time flew this year, didn't it?"
"Says the guy who was locked up in a Nut House for a good chunk of it." Logan threw a wad of packing bubbles at him and continued to look through his stuff. "I was thinking… we should have mom and dad come to it." Logan stopped what he was doing as he turned slowly towards his brother, face un-readable.
"You can't be serious. After what she did to us both?!"
"Yeah…I mean, I don't forgive her, but they are our parents…"
"James, they had me locked up-"
"It was either that or jail-"
"And wanted you to leave Carlos-"
"Which didn't work-"
"And who knows what lies they're putting in Camille's head now that we're gone?!" James was silent as he waited for Logan to calm down. "…I'm sorry. I just…"
"I know Loges. How bout this? Let's go see them for lunch, find out why mom is so uptight about us being with younger guys. Maybe we just aren't seeing it from her point of view." Now it was Logan's turn to be silent as he thought about that.
"…Fine. But! If she begins to tell me how messed up I am or how much of a slut Kendall is, I will walk out and never see my mother ever again."
"Deal."
…
The following weekend found James and Logan at their parents' house, waiting for them to come into the living room; currently, it was just the two teens and their sister. The group of siblings were silent as they waited for their parents to come in.
When Logan's mom entered, he finally realized how much of a toll this all had taken on her; she looked considerably older than the last time he had seen her. Her face looked pinched and worn, wrinkles around her eyes; her hair, pulled back from her face in a low bun looked grayer than he remembered.
Any anger he had originally felt began to fade when he saw her; she was suffering as much as they were it seemed.
"Logan, James," she said as she sat down with her husband across from the kids. Camille had made a quick escape to her room since this talk didn't really concern her. "How are you two doing?"
"We're good," Logan found himself saying, seeing a small smile come over his mom's lips when he did so, "Got our own place, will be graduating school soon."
"Good, good," she said, her hands clenching together on the table. "James, how's Carlos?"
"He's good." She nodded and just focused on her hands.
"I owe you boys an apology, and a reason as to why I behaved the way I did… And it all boils down to Logan's father." Logan was silent then; he didn't remember much about his father, except that he left when he was young; he had some photos of him though, and he always looked happy in them.
"What about him?" Logan asked quietly, shooting a look at James, who shrugged; he had no idea what was going on either.
"Your father, Logan, was a great man," she said, leaning into her husband's touch as she spoke, voice soft with old memories, "I loved him as much as any person could love another. We worked well together, had you, were happy… but then… he began to change." Logan stilled at her words, knowing what was going to be said before she said it.
"He had personality disorder, didn't he?" She nodded and took a deep breath.
"I tried everything to get him to calm down, but it wouldn't work. We were mixing like oil and water… but then, one day, he came home from work and told me they had suggested a therapist for him. He said he was going to work on his problems and be a better husband, a better father… I believed him, and even worse, he believed himself."
"What happened mom?"
"There was a young man that went to his therapist; his appointments were always either before or after your dad's… he was always there. I won't give you the details, but… he left me, for him." The two teens could hear the distaste in her voice, could see it in the quiver of her lips, the watering of her eyes. "He told me he was sorry, but he had finally found what could calm him down. And it wasn't me… or you." She sobbed a bit and wiped at her eyes. "I had gotten over it until you began showing signs of the same thing; I helped you as much as I could. But then, on the night before you were to start Junior year, he called me."
"Why?"
"He moved back to town with his husband. And I knew, if you were to find out, I could lose you like I lost him. And then, you and James began to date Carlos and Kendall and I just knew… I had already lost." She rubbed at her face and looked at them. "I'm sorry, but my opinion won't change of those boys. But… I'm willing to try. I don't want to lose my sons."
Logan was silent as he looked at his mom, who James was forgiving. Finally, though, he spoke.
"I want his address." His voice was calm and hard, eyes cool and wild as he looked at his mom. "Please."
"Don't do anything rash Logan." She wrote down his address and handed it to him, his name written down too. "Be careful."
"Always am," he said, quickly kissing her cheek and walking out.
He had a man to see.
…
Logan brought his motorcycle to a stop in front of a small house; it was cozy, everything the house he lived in before his mom remarried was; that is, before his dad left them. He felt anger bubble up as he got off and went to the front door, knocking; he had to shove his hands in his pockets to get them to stop shaking.
A young girl answered the door; she was probably a few years younger than him, 14 at the least; Logan had to take a step back as she looked at him. Her hair was dark, just like his, but her eyes were a bright blue.
"Can I help you?"
"Uh…I was looking for Johnathon Mitchell?" he asked, voice cracking; seeing the girl had shaken him. She turned her head and called out over her shoulder.
"Daddy, there's a guy here to see you!" He heard steady footsteps as someone approached. The girl moved out of the way as he got there. Logan had to take another step back as the man filled the doorway; he was taller than Logan, but besides that, the resemblance was uncanny; his dark brown hair, although streaked with gray, was the same color as Logan's, as were his eyes; he was a little broader built, but when he saw Logan, he smiled a dimpled-grin that Logan knew looked like the one he had when he was happy.
"Logan." Logan couldn't speak, but he could nod. "You… you came to visit."
"No." The word escaped before Logan could stop it. "She told me what you did. To her, to me, to our family." The man looked uncomfortable, but let Logan get it out. "BECAUSE OF YOU SHE LOCKED ME UP IN A CRAZY HOUSE AND THEN MADE THE LOVE OF MY LIFE BREAK UP WITH ME. I HAD TO LEAVE, ABANDON HIM, UNTIL I WAS FREE ENOUGH. AND WHEN I FINALLY CONFRONT HER ABOUT WHAT SHE DID, IT WASN'T EVEN HER FAULT. IT WAS YOURS. AND THEN I FIND OUT THE TRUTH, AND YOU HAVE A NEW FAMILY NOW. FUCK YOU!" Logan turned and moved towards his motorcycle; he heard his dad behind him, but didn't turn back.
"Logan, you have to understand, I left to protect you!"
"FROM WHAT?!" he asked, whirling around now; he caught sight of a red-haired man standing on the porch with the girl, the two of them watching them; the man's eyes were the same bright blue as the girl's were.
"From myself. I was a danger to your mom and to you. I couldn't live with myself if I hurt you."
"Well you're wrong there, you still did. And also, I have it too." The older man bowed his head and sighed.
"I'm sorry. I would never wish it on anyone, let alone my own son. I should have been there for you."
"Yeah, you should have. But you weren't. You left. And now Mom is against me and my brother falling for guys, because of how you hurt her." The man frowned and reached for Logan. "Don't touch me."
"Logan, give me a chance to explain my side. I loved your mom, I still do. And I've thought about you every day ever since I left. I wanted to come see you, but your mom wouldn't let me near you. I called her last year, telling her I moved back and wanted to see you. But she still said no. So I had to avoid you, even though you were so close." Logan shook his head and moved to straddle his motorcycle. "I had my daughter, Elizabeth, because I missed having my son with me."
"Listen," Logan said, turning to see him, "I will consider coming to see you again, but you have to apologize to mom. Otherwise you'll never see me again." The man nodded and Logan revved away, not looking back.
