…
Logan was surprised when his mom called him over for lunch. As the two of them sat down, she began to speak.
"Your father came to see me." Logan stills at the words, but nothing can come to his mind, no words leave his lips, as she looks at him. "He told me you went to see him." Logan just nods, making her face soften; she can see his shock reflecting in his dark eyes. "And told me what happened. He apologized to me."
"He did?"
"Yes. He wants to see you, meet the love of your life?"
"Oh yeah…"
"You're back with Kendall."
"I might have forgotten to mention that." She nodded and patted his hand.
"It's fine. I'm beginning to understand… I hope you will too." Logan quirked an eyebrow and his mom sighed. "Your father wants all of us – me, David, and Camille, you and Kendall, and James and Carlos - to join him, Rick, and Elizabeth for dinner this weekend."
"No."
"Logan-"
"No! I just now forgive you for what you did, what makes you think I'll forgive him?" Her eyes are still soft as she stares at her son.
"I figured you'd react this way, which is why I already asked Kendall. He's all for it." Her eyes now hold a hint of mischief, making Logan seethe, even though he's trying not to smile.
"Sneaky woman." She smiled now and patted his hand again.
"I knew you'd see it my way."
…
Saturday night found Logan driving him and Kendall to the restaurant his father had picked out, his face set in stone.
"Stop being so stressed," Kendall said as Logan reached for his hand. "You've got to be under control tonight."
"I'm fine."
"No you're not, but at least you're trying." Logan smirked at his boyfriend's words as they pulled up; Logan could see James and Carlos waiting outside for them.
"Mom went inside to get a table for all of us."
"Is he already here?"
"Yeah, he is. She's inside with him." Logan scowled but put on a forced smile as the four of them entered the restaurant. As they approached the table, Logan's mom greeted them, ushering them into their seats. Logan wouldn't meet his dad's eyes as he scanned his menu. Finally though, his dad's voice forced its way through his thoughts.
"Logan, is this the young man your mom told me about?" Logan just nodded, ignoring him; Kendall took it upon himself to answer the question.
"Yeah, I'm Kendall."
"Nice to meet you Kendall. I'm John, and this is my husband Rick, and our daughter Liz."
"It's nice to meet you all," he said over the sound of Logan's snort.
"Logan," his mom hissed, making him just roll his eyes.
"So, you must be James," John tried again, making Logan scoff as he let his brother talk.
"Yeah, I'm James, and this is my fiancé Carlos."
"Fiancé?!"
"Oh yeah, I might have forgotten to mention that," James said at his stepmom's outburst, making Carlos blush next to him.
"When did this happen?"
"Right before you told me to leave him." She looked remorseful, so Carlos spoke up.
"It's okay Mrs.M-D, I understand why."
"Thank you Carlos." All was quiet now until John tried, for a third time, to make conversation.
"So, you must Camille?"
"Yes Sir," Camille said, looking at him with wide eyes.
"You look so much like your mom."
"Thank you," both Camille and Logan's mom said, blushing profusely at that. John looked pleased with himself as his husband squeezed his hand; Logan saw this and scoffed before he stood up; he moved so fast his chair fell behind him with a soft clatter.
"I'll be right back," he said, already striding from the table. Kendall watched him go before he sighed and looked at James.
"Want me to go or you?" James huffed out air while he looked at Kendall.
"How about we let John go?" The two turned to the older man, who looked as surprised as everyone else.
"Me? He won't talk to me."
"Only one way to find out," Kendall said, jerking his thumb over his shoulder, indicating the way Logan went. "Go talk to him." John sighed but nodded, getting up from his seat.
"Wish me luck."
"You'll need it."
…
Logan was pacing outside the restaurant, his knuckles white from his clenched fists; his breathing was hard and ragged as he tried to figure out what was going on. How could everyone forgive this man so easily? He was the reason Logan was the way he was! Couldn't they see that?
"Logan?" Logan stopped his pacing but not his racing heart at the voice.
"Johnathon." Logan didn't face him, but he could feel him behind him, staring at him, waiting for something. "I'm surprised – did they send you or did you offer?"
"Kendall suggested it." Logan barked out a laugh; that was just like his boyfriend.
"Of course he did. Well, it's useless. Go back inside."
"No Logan. We need to talk."
"I have nothing of importance to talk to you about."
"Logan."
"Nope."
"You're 18 years old! Stop acting like a child!" Logan whirled around then and pushed the older man.
"You think you can fucking tell me what to do and how to act? You lost that right the minute you walked out of my life."
"Logan. I did what, at the time, I thought was best."
"You're lying and we both know it. You didn't do what you thought was best – that was the excuse you've been using for so long that you actually believe it."
"It's the truth!"
"No it's not! That's what bothers me the most – because I understand exactly why you did what you did. I've been doing the same for way too long." John watched his son as he sat down on a patio bench, his head in his hands. "You did it because you didn't want to hurt mom. Not protect her from yourself. You used your problem to protect her from what you really wanted – to leave her for the man you love."
"And you know this how?" Logan looked at him, all anger gone and replaced with what looked to be exhaustion.
"Because I did the same thing. I hid behind it for so long that I just slept with people for the hell of it; I wasn't really ready for a long-term relationship. But then…"
"Kendall."
"Yeah. He's to me what Rick's to you. He's the only thing that can keep me sane." John looked at his son, finally understanding why he was so angry with him.
"You're right. I fell in love with him, but I couldn't stand to hurt your mom or you anymore than I already had. I told her he just made it easier for me to be me. She was upset, but it was better than telling her I didn't love her the way she needed to be loved. It was dick move, I know."
"It was. But at least you admit it." Logan stands up now, stretching a bit before he digs into his jacket pocket. "Here." John took the envelope, a look of confusion finding its way to his face. "I don't forgive you, but this is a start. I graduate in a couple of weeks."
"Logan, I-"
"Just say thank you so we can go back inside."
"Thank you." Logan nodded and walked in, his dad behind him.
It was a start at least.
…
See, cute little filler chapter.
