Chapter 45 – Let's Rocket

With the Lost Galaxy Rangers' assurance that Karone, or rather Astronema, was on her way, they didn't hesitate to contact the Space Rangers. They all met up at the Command Centre, the Galaxy and Space Rangers, Tommy, Kim, Kira and Connor; the other family would, of course, be informed, but there was really no point to everyone being at this meeting. The Space Rangers were by no means surprised that Astronema's forces were approaching Earth, they'd fully expected it, and with Trakeena having arrived, and knowing that villains were appearing in reverse chronological order, it only made sense that Astronema would be next. They thanked their friends for the warning, but otherwise there was not much else to be said. The others were calling for a plan, and for the entire family to be in on this one, Karone was after all their family, and not simply the extended Power Ranger Family, but true family, enough for their children to call everyone who was not their parent aunt or uncle. However, their offer was kindly, but firmly, refused, and in truth no one could fault them. Family aside, Astronema was their villain, they knew her best, and it was their right to face her. But all the same, the Space Rangers wouldn't face the Queen of Evil alone, at least not fully, for Kira and Connor insisted on accompanying them back to Angel Grove, their place of residence and, they just realized, ground zero for both the Space Rangers, and for the final three teams of Rangers who's villains had yet to show up.

"We won't follow you into battle, but you'll need someone to watch the kids at least." Kira said in defense of her and Connor's insistence when her aunts and uncles shot her a look. It was an excuse, and a thin one at best, to cover up the real reason for them coming to Angel Grove which was them wanting to be there in their capacity as the ones of the prophecy. They were all agreed that this was it, that the prophecy would be fulfilled one way or another when Thrax's war came to a head, and as those who would end it, whether for good or ill, they wanted to be there for it all. Knowing this, none of the Space Rangers called them on their lame excuse but merely nodded in acceptance. With a goodbye to Tommy and Kim, and a promise to be ready at a moments notice should Mesogog attack, Kira and Connor teleported out along with the six Space Rangers, arriving on board the Astro Megaship.

"I thought you were lending the Astro Megaship to the Lost Galaxy Rangers." Said Connor.

"The Mark II yes." Said Andros. "Welcome to the Astro Megaship Mark III."

"Mark III?" Asked Kira.

"Hey, the Mark II is twelve years old, it's about time we got an upgrade." Andros defended his beloved ship, or rather ships, as the case may be.

"Andros contacted Kinwon back in the fall when we first learned Thrax was back." Said Ashley. "He commissioned a new Megaship."

"Which looks exactly the same." Said Kira, remembering what the Mark II looked like, not having seen the inside of the original Astro Megaship as it had been destroyed by the Galaxy Rangers during the final battle with Trakeena, though she was told that the Mark II looked identical to the original.

"Hey it's the hardware we needed upgraded, not the design." Said Cassie.

"And knowing the layout so well definitely helps during battles." TJ added.

"You got us there." Connor agreed, knowing exactly what TJ said was true. "But why are we here and not on Earth?" Outside the bridge's main viewport you could see Earth, surrounded by millions of glittering stars, so it was safe to assume they were orbiting the planet.

"We wanted to begin a scan of the outlying systems." Zhane explained. "We want to know how far away Karone is, how much time we have till she gets here."

"We'll get her back Zhane." Carlos said, beating Kira to her new favourite saying, or at least her new most common saying.

"I know." Zhane said. "It's just, Dalia and Bren have been without their mother for months now…"

"My niece and nephew are strong, Zhane, they'll be alright." Andros tried to assure his best friend.

"Strong?" Zhane cried, apparently this was the wrong thing to say. "They're little kids! They aren't, and shouldn't have to be strong! Dalia's just over a year old, Karone missed her first birthday, and Bren, he's five, maybe Dalia won't even remember Karone, but Bren sure does and everyday he wonders where mom is."

"No!" Connor suddenly interrupted them. The six Space Rangers turned to face their niece and her mate and were shocked to see tears in Kira's eyes, for she rarely ever cried.

"No what?" TJ asked.

"She wants to go after Thrax and end this now, bring Karone and the others back." Connor said, pointedly ignoring the glare Kira was sending him for spilling what she'd been thinking and feeling. "She says enough families have been torn apart by this and she should just end it now."

"Kira you can't do that!" Cried Carlos. "You know you can't use your power like that."

"And why not?!" Kira cried right back. "Everyone says I'm not supposed to use my power, completely ignoring the fact that it's not just my power, it's Connor's too, and we know that it doesn't threaten my life if we work together. We can go end this now, bring Aunt Karone and the others back. Let Bren and Dalia have their mom back. What's so bad about that? Especially as we all know we're going to end up using our power anyways!"

"Because you don't know that." Said Ashley. "You can't know that, any of it. You can't know what the future holds, if you will or won't have to use your power, and you certainly can't know with one hundred percent certainty that working together won't cost you your life. One fluke against Venjix does not constitute knowing."

"Ashley's right." Cassie was quick to agree. "And Connor knows it too, that's why he's not rushing off with you."

"So what? You'll just have me sit back and watch my family be torn apart little by little the longer my other family members are evil? You can't tell me you want that, Uncle Zhane, that you want my cousins to grow without their mom, for Bren to continue asking where mom is."

"Of course I don't want that-"

"Then don't try and stop me! Let me-"

"But your life is not worth a few more months." He finished, cutting her off. "We know we'll get Karone back, that is something we know, something that has been proven time and time again by us Rangers; we always get our family back one way or another. It's just a question of when, not if. And if you're wrong, and it will cost you your life, it's not worth it to save a bit of heartache."

"But-"

"Knock it off." Connor said, looking down at her with a completely serious expression. "It's not gonna work, you're not going."

"You don't-"

"Get to tell you what to do?" He asked, reading her mind through their bond. "Actually yeah, I do. And you're under orders not to use your power unless I'm there with you, and I'm not going anywhere, so you can just give it up." Kira really wanted to hit him in that moment, he knew she did, but it was a testament to both her strength, and her hatred of any form of abuse, even if only done in the heat of anger, that saw her merely storm off. Connor sighed and rubbed his hand over his face before turning to the others, all of whom wore guarded expressions, though there was a hint of anger as there always was whenever they were reminded of Connor's power over their niece, especially when that reminder came from the man in question.

"She needed to hear that, and I needed to say it." He told them finally. "I can't tell you how many times in the past months since Thrax returned that she's wanted to go off and just end it. We've talked about it, we've fought about it, I've been kind and gentle in telling her no and also firm about it, but she can't get it through her head that it's too risky and that none of us, least of all myself, are going to let it happen. We've both kind of reached our snapping point on the topic. She needed to get it through her head, and I needed to get it through her head, and it finally came to this, to the one thing that had to get it through her head because she's physically incapable of anything else." No one knew what to say. No matter how much they may know about the bond Kira and Connor, and Tommy and Kim, shared, none of them could truly grasp it; they just hoped Connor was right. Any awkward silence that would have followed this particular topic was thankfully cut off as DECA, the 3.0 version, told them there was an attack on the city. Or perhaps not too thankfully, the Rangers thought as the viewport closed over, becoming their view screen, and revealed that the monster attacking wasn't just a regular monster, but the Psycho Rangers.

"Looks like they made a new friend too." Said Andros. "Psycho Silver is back and this time it's not you in a costume." He directed to Zhane.

"Let's go." Said TJ, the Rangers preparing for their first battle as a whole team in many years. Turning towards the door, they laid eyes on Connor and hesitated for a moment, remembering they had a niece who was very upset.

"Go!" Connor said, as if the answer to this particular problem was obvious, and to him it was. "Kira's my problem, and both her despair and wrath will be directed at me. I'll handle it."

"Preferably without mentioning that particular power you have over her again." Carlos half-snarled, unable to help himself for it was his niece, even if he knew, after all these years, that Connor's intentions were far from malicious.

"And without unleashing her wrath." Ashley added as they all passed by Connor on their way to the rec room and the jump tubes that would take them down to Earth, a sixth jump tube having been added to the Mark 2 and Mark 3 for Zhane. "This Astro Megaship is new, let's not destroy it just yet." Connor rolled his eyes and nodded, knowing Ashley was exaggerating purposefully to try and relieve some tension before they all left. It took mere seconds to arrive at their colour coded jump tubes, all six immediately jumping down them, morphing as they landed on their Galaxy Gliders and headed down to Earth. During the short amount of time that it took to reach Angel Grove from the Megaship orbiting Earth, the Psycho Rangers had proved that even after all these years, they were just as tough and ruthless as before; the destruction they'd caused in that short amount of time was by no means minimal. Angel Grove was certainly ground zero once again.

"Hey Psychos!" Andros called as they approached, making their evil Psycho Ranger counterparts turn in their direction, just in time for a direct hit as they sped past them on their Galaxy Gliders. Knocking the Psychos down always felt good at first, but usually it just pissed them off and the Rangers paid for it later in battle.

"We've been expecting you." Psycho Red sneered.

"You're gonna wish you'd never returned once we're through with you!" cried TJ.

"Oh you mean like the last time?" Psycho Blue said mockingly.

"Yeah, the second time you were destroyed!" Cassie returned. "Care to go for a third?" Psycho Pink's answer was to summon her bow and fire off a round of energy arrows at Cassie. "I'll take that as a yes." She growled. "Satellite Stunner!" With those two attacks the battle officially began and each Ranger went up against their Psycho Ranger counterpart, Zhane doing so for the first time and now cursing their ploy from all those years ago for apparently it had given Astronema some ideas and given them another Psycho Ranger to defeat. Although the Psychos were just as tough as the Rangers remembered, they'd taken the lessons they'd learned sixteen years ago to heart and knew exactly how to fight them. The Psycho Rangers knew their counterpart's fighting style and abilities, and just like last time the Rangers tripped them up by switching up the colour. Instead of Pink on Pink and Yellow on Yellow, they forced the Psychos to fight Pink on Blue and Yellow on Black, each taking on a different colour and using that to their advantage. Another advantage they had was that they were sixteen years older and wiser then the last time they'd fought. They'd learned more skills, adjusted their fighting style as time went on, and the Psychos knew nothing of any of their new moves, the villains returning to life as they'd been before, and any new moves they had would be learned from their point of resurrection. They could, and would, use the knowledge their hosts had gained over the years, if they had hosts, but they'd have to incorporate that knowledge after being resurrected, not coming into the first battle with ready-made plans the Rangers had never seen. To top it all off, the Rangers were wise to the Psychos' ability to read their minds and learn from them that way and were very cautious to ensure that that did not happen this time around. Eventually, after the battle had worn on for awhile with neither side making much headway, the Rangers re-grouped, as did the Psychos, the former calling on their more powerful weapons.

"Spiral Sabre Booster Mode!"

"Quadro Blaster!"

"Fire!" The attacks hit the Psychos and felled them, but not for long. The Psychos stood up, angrier and more determined then ever to defeat the Rangers, however they were stopped by the arrival of the one they'd all been waiting for. Astronema appeared off in the distance. The Rangers wondered which Astronema they'd be dealing with, the cocky, smug, elaborate plan, ever-changing wig one Karone had been before Dark Spector had infused her with his energy, or the no nonsense, to the point, and far more dangerous one she became after. They should have known, however, which one it would be. Karone was strong, and it wouldn't be enough to simply infuse her with a bit of evil energy and send her on her way, she'd need constant supervision, and a never ending flow of evil energy to keep her under Dark Spector, and Thrax's, control. As she neared them, they could see she looked exactly as she had during The Countdown, with the red hair, vacant yet fierce expression, and the device on the side of her head that kept the evil inside her. Ecliptor flanked his Queen as she came to stand before the Rangers, staring each of them down through their helmets, as they too took her in, Andros noting that on the plus side she still wore her necklace.

"Karone…" Zhane murmured looking into his wife's cold eyes and wondering how the hell he was going to fight her.

"Not anymore…husband." She practically spit out the last word, letting him know that although she remembered their relationship, her feelings about it had drastically changed. "I'll give you one chance, and one chance only. Join me, and I will let you live."

"Karone try and remember!" Zhane begged, ignoring the 'chance' she gave him. "Think of Dalia and Bren…"

"I am thinking of them." She returned. "I am their mother after all. They will join me as well, as the Prince and Princess of Evil. Once I destroy Dark Specter, yet again, and Thrax as well, no one shall stand in my way and I shall be the supreme ruler of the universe. Our children will have the universe at their fingertips, anything they want shall be theirs, no doors shall ever be closed to them. Will you deny them that opportunity? Or will you join us?"

"I won't let you turn Dalia and Bren evil, or even bring them into that world more then they already are." Zhane said fiercely. The only possible thing that could make him fight his wife would be if his children's safety depended on it, and Astronema seemed intent on making that fight happen.

"You won't have a choice." She snarled. "Ecliptor."

"My Queen." Her most trusted advisor and general acknowledged.

"Destroy them."

"As you command. Quantrons!" The foot soldiers finally made their appearance, arriving in large numbers and using those numbers to their advantage. Only Astronema and Ecliptor stayed out of the battle, the Psycho Rangers refusing to pass up an opportunity to destroy their arch-enemies. Between the power of the Psychos, and the sheer number of Quantrons, the Rangers were losing the battle, and rather quickly. It wasn't long before they lost their morphs, finding themselves surrounded on all sides.

"This is the end for you Rangers." Psycho Silver sneered.

"Finally, after all these years, your destruction will come at the hands of the Psycho Rangers!" Psycho Red cackled.

"Think again!" Two voices shouted together as blaster fire rained down upon the Quantrons and Psychos. The barricade they'd formed around the Space Rangers was broken, and the six didn't hesitate in getting themselves out, even allowing the two fully morphed newcomers to place themselves in front of them.

"You two." Astronema growled.

"Hello Aunt Karone." Kira muttered back, she and Connor having witnessed the fight from the Astro Megaship and having teleported to help when the first of their family had lost their morph. They themselves were morphed as the Dino Rangers, knowing that their purpose in this battle wasn't to destroy, but aid, and so their most powerful forms were not necessary.

"Another Yellow Ranger!" Psycho Yellow snarled, eyeing this Ranger whom she'd never seen before.

"And a Red." Psycho Red agreed.

"I'd stay back if I were you." Connor advised them. "Even your boss hasn't made a move, she knows that we're no ordinary Rangers."

"That doesn't mean I won't destroy you!" Astonema shouted, Connor basically having called her out. She then joined the battle, the two Dino Rangers taking on not only her, but all six Psychos. The Space Rangers were forgotten for a time, and that was precisely their plan. While they hadn't exactly anticipated Astronema and six Psycho Rangers, they knew they had to buy the Space Rangers time to re-group and for their powers to stabilize enough for another morph; they weren't trying to win this battle, merely defend themselves until the others could fight once more. In true Ranger fashion, it wasn't long before they were ready, all six feeling it as their powers reached maximum capacity once more.

"Hey!" Andros yelled as he and the others launched on a series of attacks meant only to gain Astronema and the Psychos' attention. Their plan worked, and seconds later the six of them stood facing their enemies, allowing Kira and Connor to discretely back away, though they by no means left the battle field, or even de-morphed, they had a feeling they'd still be needed.

"You will never succeed in conquering Earth so long as we're around!"

"Then I guess we better ensure you aren't around!" Psycho Black said.

"You can try!" Carlos shot back.

"Ready?" Andros called it, taking a step forward and raising his Morpher.

"Ready!"

"Let's Rocket!"

"Astro Red!"

"Astro Yellow!"

"Astro Black!"

"Astro Blue!"

"Astro Pink!"

"Astro Silver!"

"Space Rangers!"

"I don't care how you do it," Astronema muttered to her disciples. "Destroy them all!" If anyone had thought the battle before had been intense it was nothing like it was now. Kira and Connor had been right in that they'd be needed, though they were happy to be relegated to the role of keeping the battle contained while taking out Quantrons along the way.

"Psycho Red!" Andros cried as he reached his nemesis.

"You'll never win, Ranger!"

"Oh yeah? We'll see about that. There's a couple toys you didn't get to meet last time. Red Battlized Ranger!" It was true that Psycho Red, or any of the Psychos for that matter, had never fought against a Red Ranger's Battlizer, and it was certainly just the edge they needed. "Battlizer missiles!" A large group of Quantrons were destroyed by that attack, though Psycho Red got lucky and was merely knocked back, injured only from the impact.

"No! I will not let you defeat me!" He roared, coming at the Red Ranger in anger, which was always a mistake. Andros landed a powerful kick to Psycho Red's midsection before flying upwards and out of reach. Although they themselves didn't have Battlizers, the other Space Rangers were faring much better this time around, the atmosphere of the battle having taken a turn for the better, hope that they could truly defeat the Psychos growing, and it certainly reflected in their fighting. Once again the Rangers re-grouped, as did the Psychos, though this time they didn't intend to let them get away.

"Think your Battlizer has enough power to destroy them?" Ashley asked her husband. If they could destroy the Psychos now, it would change the whole tune of their battle against Astronema.

"Not mine alone." He confessed. "But with some help…hey Connor!" The Red Dino Ranger whipped his head around after kicking a Quantron away, and nodded that he was listening. "Little help here?" It took a moment, but Connor eventually understood what Andros was getting at and he was only too happy to help; it had been far too long since he'd used the Triassic power.

"Absolutely!" After ensuring Kira knew what was going on, for she was still fighting some Quantrons, though somehow Astronema had made her way over as well, completely ignorant to the Psychos possible peril, he jumped into the air and flipped over to land beside Andros. "Shield of Triumph!" The weapon the ancient power of his Dino Gem had created appeared in his hands and he held it high above his head. "Triassic Ranger!" The Psychos weren't sure what to make of this new Ranger, and his new equipment, but they were sure that whatever happened, it wouldn't be good.

"Ready?" Andros asked.

"Oh yeah!"

"Battlizer missiles!"

"Cannons! Super Fire Power!" The two Battlizers saw enough power sent at the Psychos that the Rangers were sure they were finished. When the dust settled, the Psychos were down, some of them in pieces, but before the Rangers could get any true confirmation that they were dead, Astronema broke off from her battle with Kira, swore her revenge, and then disappeared, taking the Psychos with her.

"Next time, I'm starting with the Battlizer." Andros said as he and Connor powered the Battlizers down.

"They certainly haven't lost their edge." TJ agreed.

"Let's head back to the Megaship." Cassie suggested, knowing it wouldn't be long until people returned to this area of the city. They all did just that, returning to the ship and powering down there.

"You alright?" Ashley asked Kira as she came over and wrapped her arm around the younger woman, still worried over what had happened earlier.

"Yeah." She said. "I was just…being stupid."

"No kidding." Connor muttered. Kira narrowed her eyes and shot him a hard look that had him rethink the intelligence of his words.

"Don't push it." She said and he held up his hands in defeat, fully admitting he should have kept his mouth shut and was glad to be getting off with only a warning. The Space Rangers laughed at the two, glad to see things were pretty much back to normal, but the easiness of the moment didn't last, for mere minutes after they'd left one battle, it seemed that another appeared directly at their front door in the form of Ecliptor who appeared right on the bridge.

"How'd you get in here?!" Carlos demanded as they all fell into fighting stances. They knew it should be impossible for the Astro Megaship was protected against anyone with an evil energy signature.

"Stay calm, I'm not here to fight." Astronema's head general replied, holding his hands up in a gesture of surrender.

"Then why are you here?" Andros asked.

"I had to speak with you about…Karone." He said, lowering his hands slightly, but still keeping them clearly visible.

"What are you talking about?" Zhane asked.

"I was not infused with Thrax, or Dark Spector's, evil energy." He explained. "Though they knew I was not destroyed by Zordon's energy, they do not know why and believe, rightfully so, that I am entirely loyal to my Queen, meaning if she is evil then I would be too."

"And that's not true?" Asked Cassie, all of them confused. "You just said that they were right that you're entirely loyal to your Queen."

"Yes, but I am not the mindless drone they believe me to be. I know Karone is not truly evil but was made so against her will. I know she loves you," He directed to Zhane. "And her children with all her heart. And so I know she does not really wish to hurt you. Any of you."

"And this is relevant to your being here because…?" Kira trailed off, leaving the question open ended.

"Because I wanted to offer my help." He said. "I know you will eventually succeed in returning Karone to her rightful self, and when that happens, I wish to ensure she has done nothing irreparable. She has enough guilt over her time as Astronema, she does not need more." The emotion in his voice was enough to have them relax somewhat as he continued. "I am loyal to her, and will do as she commands, even if it means fighting you. But I am loyal to her true self, not the self Thrax and Dark Spector have forced her to once again become, and I wish to protect her true self."

"You're serious." Andros murmured, knowing it to be true. Though it had been sixteen years, Andros, Zhane, and the others had had very little contact with Ecliptor, though they knew Karone often visited him, the one who had raised her from the age of five, though they still couldn't quite wrap their heads around Karone and Ecliptor's relationship. "You really do love her, don't you?"

"I have raised her since she was a little girl." He answered finally. "I know I cannot replace your parents…"

"No…I'm glad." Andros said. "Karone doesn't remember mom and dad, she has one or two memories of them, but nothing else. They're her parents, but not really…if that makes any sense. I'm glad she had someone to care for her for all those years." It was a relatively awkward moment as Andros verbally acknowledged Ecliptor's role in his sister's life, the large part he'd played in it, and the large part of Karone's heart, the part reserved for parental figures, that he still held.

"Yes…well…" Ecliptor stumbled a bit, trying to get back on track. "As I said, I wish to protect her true self. I will help where I can, and inform you of anything out of the ordinary, or any grand plans she comes up with. Also," Here he turned to Zhane once again. "I must inform you that your children are in grave danger. She really does wish to have them close, but it is more then just her maternal love breaking through the evil, she wishes to protect them from Dark Spector."

"He's after them?" Zhane gasped.

"Yes. Astronema is his strongest warrior, he is the Monarch of Evil, the head of the UAE, but she is next in line, outranking all other evil, though she allows Thrax to believe otherwise for the time being. Dark Spector may be easily played by Thrax, but Astronema is not. She is powerful, it is the reason she, above all others, came closest to conquering the universe, and destroying you Rangers."

"Venjix actually came closest." Connor corrected.

"No he didn't. He may have destroyed Earth, but to do so he had to get rid of you, and not by destroying you, but tricking you and leaving you stranded far from your planet." Said Ecliptor. "All evil beings have the power to do as Venjix did should they have no opposition. Astronema nearly succeeded with that opposition. She also didn't just go after one planet, but the entire universe. Dark Spector knows of her power and believes her children to be a weakness. He will try and wipe that weakness out, or at the very least use them as an incentive for her to do as he says, should his hold on her ever break."

"He won't touch them." Zhane growled.

"Agreed." Ecliptor concurred immediately. "But you must still be on your guard."

"Of course." Said Ashley. "We all will be." Ecliptor nodded and prepared to leave, but paused, remembering one other thing.

"You should also know that the Psycho Rangers are not destroyed. They are gravely injured, but they will be rebuilt. And they will not underestimate you again." The Rangers nodded, anticipating the next time they faced the Psychos, and not looking forward to it one bit.

"Thank you, for coming here. We really appreciate it." Said TJ. "But before you go," He stopped Ecliptor, who once again had prepared to leave. "How did you get in here? If there's a hole in our shields we need to know."

"You're shields are fine." Ecliptor said. "They protect against evil, and while I was created by evil energy, if that is all I was, Zordon's energy would have destroyed me sixteen years ago. Now I must go." Using that as his goodbye, their new ally left them, leaving behind a bunch of questions and plans to be made.

"Well that was enlightening." Kira said finally.

"You're telling us." Andros muttered. "I definitely didn't expect that to happen."

"But it did. And it tells us one thing. Evil isn't as hopeless as we thought."

"What do you mean?" Cassie asked.

"Ecliptor is still technically evil, but his intentions are noble, his heart is good, and truly good or the shields would have stopped him. And if pure evil can be truly good, evil can destroy itself."

"But what are the chances?" Carlos asked sceptically. "I mean, Ecliptor is the exception, evil isn't suddenly going to turn good."

"True, but you're missing the point." Said Kira. "It's not that evil has to turn good, it's that it can. And if it can, then goodness is far stronger then we thought." Kira turned to Connor as they both felt relief wash over them. Ever since they'd helped the Time Force Rangers and got a glimpse of the future and its uncertainty, they'd been doubting themselves, doubting goodness, and wondering if it was really strong enough to defeat all this evil. But if evil itself could be truly good, then perhaps their worry was for nothing. Of course the relief they felt would never really be complete until this battle, and the prophecy, was over, but it gave them more hope then they'd had these last couple of months, and as had been proven not an hour ago, hope sometimes made all the difference.

A/N - And there you have it, Karone's return as Astronema. And the return of the Psycho Rangers.

Big news! I just finished writing the story last night! This means I can now tell you that there is a grand total of 50 chapters, and also assure you that updates should be every second day as all I gotta do is edit and post. It's exciting, but also kinda sad. =(

Review please!
