"Kid...are you okay?" Liz inquired, cautiously approaching the reaper boy.
The sisters had recently found their meister in a heap by the front door. Both were unsure if it was okay to approach him in this state, but Liz decided to "take one for the team", as Patty had worded it.
Kid muttered something to himself, then rose slowly and faced the older girl. For a moment, they both stood silently.
Liz was about to panic and apologize, but then Kid's face softened, and he spoke.
"I will be...hopefully. I'm just a bit scrambled. I appreciate you girls' concern." He smiled at the shocked look on their faces.
"Why? You were all happy-giddy yesterday morning," Patty started, throwing her hands into the air, "and then you just got sadder and sadder" she added, twirling her hands downward dramatically, "and now you're on the floor talking to yourself!" she finished, sounding concerned.
Kid sunk back into his thoughts as he spoke. "This whole thing with Soul is troubling me. I mean...everything happened so quickly. And I'm honestly petrified of what people will say or do to him..."
Patty walked up to the reaper boy and embraced him tighter than he liked at the moment. She giggled, "Oh, Kid, don't worry! If anyone messes with you guys, we'll just rip them to shreds on the spot!" With this remark, she released her meister, opened the door, and skipped out onto the sidewalk. "You guys coming?" She asked happily.
Liz and Kid exchanged a look that was a mixture of worry and fear before following her reluctantly out the door.
Soul could barely contain himself when he and Maka arrived at DWMA. All of the fear and anxiety he'd harbored that morning evaporated into excitement and hope the moment they walked through the door.
Maka couldn't help but notice, and she grinned wildly as she watched her scythe scan the halls for the reaper. "Calm down, lover boy. I don't think he's here yet."
The white haired boy scoffed and crossed his arms in reply, as the pair headed toward their first class.
Seemingly coming from nowhere, they heard a hissing sound. They searched about for a moment, when it came again, more distinctly. "Pssst!"
Soul whirled around to see Kid's head poking out of a janitor's closet. And before his meister could realize it, Soul had disappeared.
He slammed the door behind himself as he rushed in to meet his lover.
"Oh, how I missed you..." Kid whispered as he was pulled into a much-needed embrace.
"Me too." Soul replied, his voice wavering ever so slightly. "More than you know." He pulled back from the hug and took the younger boy's face in his hands. He noticed a look of dismay on Kid's face.
Seeing that Soul was looking at him with concern, Kid decided to speak: "I was worried I would wake up, and this would all be a d-dream..." he stuttered, tears forming in his eyes. "Or that you'd...changed your mind - "
Soul interrupted his thought with a long, slow kiss. The both of them felt as if their hearts could explode when their lips met. Kid stumbled backward slightly, his back landing against the wall.
Soul thought to take advantage of this opportunity, and leaned in, teasing Kid's neck with his fingertips.
They then heard the chatter of students outside and stopped abruptly. They laughed as Soul took a step forward and rested his forehead on Kid's, staring into his eyes.
"Don't you ever, for a second, think I'll change my mind about you, Kiddo." Soul smiled as he linked his hands with the reaper's. "I'm all yours. Always. For as long as you'll have me."
Kid grinned at the use of his nickname, which he liked more and more every time it was said.
Everything around them seemed to disappear as they got lost in each others eyes for what seemed like an eternity. That is, until the bell rang, signaling the beginning of first period.
"Shit." Soul laughed, breaking contact with his lover. "How do we get outta here without making everyone suspicious?"
Kid smiled mischievously. "Easy!" He replied, turning to grab a mop and shoving it into Soul's hand. "We're cleaning up a spill in the cafeteria!" He grabbed a bucket and turned toward the door. As he opened it, he turned his head back around and added, "And, it's your fault, of course." He winked and headed out the door and down the hall.
Soul shook his head and laughed before heading out and following him.
The two boys clambered into the classroom, receiving stares from all of their classmates, and even their professor.
Kid put on his most serious, snobby voice and said loudly, "So sorry I am late, professor. This imbecile," he motioned to Soul, who was trying not to laugh, "spilled my beverage all over our nice white tile floors in the cafeteria. Of course it had to be cleaned immediately."
Maka smirked at Kid's charade. Though she could see right through it, mostly everyone else seemed convinced. Except for Professor Stein, that is.
"Yes, well. Whether that is to be believed or not..." he paused.
Kid and Soul gulped in unison, trying to maintain their composure.
"...you are both to be seen in Lord Death's office, immediately." Stein finished, standing.
Kid's demeanor turned angry. "Right now? What does father want with us?!" Soul simply looked around, nervously.
Stein ignored them both. "I'll escort you." He said flatly as he the exited the room.
The two boys looked to each other, one terrified and the other irritated. They tried their best to avoid the stares of their classmates as they reluctantly followed Stein out the door.
"I demand you tell me what this is all about!" Kid shouted at Stein as they approached the office door. He could feel Soul's shaking hand next to his, and he desperately wanted to hold it, to comfort him, but he refrained.
Stein shrugged his shoulders as he entered. "I'm not entirely sure, myself. We will find out soon enough."
Kid huffed as he followed him inside, Soul walking very closely behind him.
"Ooh, good! You're here!" Lord Death clapped comically as they approached. "Good, good, good! Come on now, sit, sit!" He motioned to some uncomfortable stools.
Kid scoffed. "I'd rather stand, father, as I don't assume we will be here very long. I demand to know what this is all about!"
Soul shifted nervously, hoping Kid wasn't making Lord Death angry...that was the last thing they needed right now.
Lord Death grinned. "That's my boy! Always to the point, no dilly-dallying with you, son!" Kid rolled his eyes once again as his father continued. "Well, then, here it is: I have heard some talk lately about you two..."
The two boys immediately stiffened, though Kid did his best to maintain his irritated demeanor.
"...are you aware of what I'm referring to?" He turned to Soul, but Kid answered.
"Not in the slightest, Father, and I don't appreciate being toyed with. Could you be so kind as to get to the point?"
Soul looked at Kid, petrified.
"Alright then, there has been talk of a relationship between the two of you."
Soul thought he could die on the spot. Actually, he wished he would die on the spot, so as to put an end to this miserable encounter. And he felt he may soon get his wish.
Kid gasped dramatically. "Father, you were never one to bother with rumors! Why would you drag us out of class for this nonsense?"
Lord Death laughed heartily - menacingly, Soul thought - and patted his son on the head with his large gloved hand. "My dear boy, if I thought this were simply a rumor, you know I would not have bothered. But you are forgetting something."
"Oh, and what's that?" Kid asked sarcastically.
"I have surveillance nearly everywhere on this campus. Including the janitorial closets." He grinned.
You could nearly hear Soul shatter into a million pieces. He almost fainted from fear.
Kid, on the other hand, was enraged. "You...you were spying on me? On us!? Wh-what kind of father...I can't...I can't even speak to you right now! I'm so...ugh!" Kid threw his hands up in disgust and turned his back to the reaper.
Soul took a few deep breaths, and used all of his energy to speak. "Sir? ...If I may...?"
Lord Death, surprised, turned to look at Soul. "Yes, my dear boy, by all means."
The white-haired boy closed his eyes, and began, "I want you to know that I had no intention of violating any school rules with our behavior this morning, nor do I wish to upset you or interrupt your family in any way." Hey, that sounded official... Soul thought proudly. He opened his eyes and continued, a little less formally. "Please understand that your son is very important to me. Yes, this relationship is new...and, complicated...but I honestly can't imagine going on without him anymore."
Kid turned to look at Soul, his frustration fading.
"For a long time, I've felt as if there was something missing. I had convinced myself that it would always be that way, and I dealt with it." Tears began to form in Soul's eyes as he spoke. "But now there's something there - every time I see Kid, every time he holds my hand or looks at me...like he is now..." Soul smiled as a tear ran down his cheek, "...and I don't want to go back. I don't want to feel empty again."
Kid looked as if he were about to crumble into pieces.
Lord Death looked between the two boys. Although he never came across as upset or menacing - in his own eyes, anyway - he now looked even more relaxed. He turned to his son, and asked, "Kid, is this accurate for you also?"
Kid stepped to Soul and grabbed both of his hands, then looked at his father and replied. "More so than I could realize. Father, I want you to understand the magnitude of what I'm about to say."
Lord Death nodded.
Kid took a deep breath. "When Soul is around, or even when I'm thinking of him...I don't fix the paintings in the hallway. I don't feel the need to reorganize the refrigerator, or to rearrange the furniture, and I don't even worry about these damned stripes in my hair. I don't need to anymore. That was what was occupying my time, making me feel safe...but with Soul - " he turned back to look at his lover once more " - I know I'm safe. I don't need anything else."
His father gasped happily. "Oh, goodness, I didn't think anything could cure my boy of that obsessive behavior!" He laughed. "Well then." He moved closer to the two. "That's all I needed to hear. You have my blessing."
The boys turned to him, shocked. "R-really?" Soul smiled nervously.
"Of course. All I want is for my son to be happy. And if you make him happy, then you're a-okay with me!" He laughed heartily and gave a big thumbs-up. "Now, get back to class, hmm? Go on, off you go!" He shuffled them toward the door with his hands. As they left, Lord Death called out: "Oh, and mister Evans!"
Soul turned around as the door was closing. "Yeah?"
"Break my boy's heart, and there'll be hell to pay!" Lord Death giggled as the door slammed shut.
"So...wait, he called you guys into his office to...congratulate you for making out in the janitor's closet?" Tsubaki laughed.
Kid shook his head and smiled. "Not quite. I think he was trying to scare the shit out of Soul. And, I think it worked."
The group laughed as Soul scoffed and crossed his arms. "I'm not scared! I just...whatever."
Black*Star punched him playfully in the arm. "Scaredy-cat! Scaredy-cat!" He laughed.
"Hey, watch it, punk." Soul glared at him through a smile.
Patty suddenly stood up excitedly. "Hey, you guys! Let's go get ice cream before the shop closes! Whaddaya say?"
Everyone followed suit, nodding their agreement, and headed toward the ladder leading down from the rooftop. Kid and Soul lingered for a moment.
'"You guys coming?" Maka asked, peeking her head up over the metal railing of the ladder.
"Yeah, in a minute." Soul replied.
As Maka descended, Soul grabbed Kid's hand and led him over to the edge of the roof. He sat down, swinging his feet over, and patted the area next to him with his hand. "Join me?" He grinned.
Kid sat down next to the white-haired boy and stared out over the horizon. He felt Soul wrap his arm around his waist as they sat watching the sunset.
"Ya know, this is pretty perfect." Soul mused.
"Yeah, you are." Kid winked. "Perfect for me, that is."
Soul pulled him closer and kissed the top of his head. "That's the nicest thing anyone's ever said to me."
"Then you have awful friends." Kid joked.
Soul turned his head to look at his boyfriend, and smiled. "Hey, Kiddo?"
"Yeah?"
"...I love you."
Kid smiled wildly. "I love you, more." He leaned in and kissed Soul softly, then laid his head on the older boy's shoulder.
As they sat and watched the sun fade, there was nothing in the world that could bring them down. For the first time in a really long time, everything was...totally cool.
