A New Dream
I heard a sloshing sound and turned to see the volunteer with Marius unconscious on his shoulder.
I called out, "Monsieur!"
He turned and saw me, "My child, you still live?"
I responded, "Gav, he made sure I was safe." Don't cry, don't cry...
He replied, "Well, you are welcome to stay with us, but we must make haste! Marius is in need of a doctor!" We quickly ran back to his house. I was amazed by how large it was.
He knocked on the door and a beautiful blonde woman answered, "Papa, you have returned! Oh, my, what's happened?! Who's this?" She gestured to me.
"I will explain later, Cosette. She has gone through great sorrow on this night. Leave her be for now," he replied.
(We'realmostdonewiththestory!)
Two weeks passed, and Marius hadn't woken up yet. I stayed by him, wanting him to see his only surviving friend. He began to stir.
"Saterine?," he mumbled.
"Yes, Marius, it's me," I sobbed, remembering my friends, "Just me." He realized what I was saying, and began sobbing as well. Later, when he was well enough, we decided to go back to the cafe.
As we looked around, feelings of sorrow and nostalgia came rushing at us both.
We both began to sing,
"There's a grief that can't be spoken.
There's a pain, goes on and on.
Empty chairs at empty tables,
Now our friends are dead and gone.
Here they talked of revolution,
here it was they lit the flame.
Here they sang about tomorrow,
and tomorrow never came.
From the table in the corner,
they could see a world reborn.
And we can see them now!
They very words that they had sung,
became their last communion.
On that lonely barricade,
at dawn!"
At this point, we were still singing together, but to ourselves and the spirits of our friends.
"Oh, my friends, my friends, forgive me,
that I live and you are gone.
There's a grief that can't be spoken.
There's a pain goes on, and on!
Phantom faces at the window!
Phantom shadows on the floor!
Empty chairs at empty tables,
where my friends will meet no more!
Oh, my friends, my friends, don't ask me,
what your sacrifice was for!
Empty chairs at empty tables,
where my friends will meet no more."
As we sang, I felt anger. How could those people just stand by when we were risking our lives for them! How dare they let my friends die for them while they did nothing! It was then when I knew what I was going to do. I was going to make another barricade. And this time, I will succeed!
(Seriously,it'salmostover.)
As Marius and Cosette sang about their love for one another, I immediately went straight to my room.
"My child, is there a problem?," Monsieur Madeleine asked. We had grown quite close since he let me live there.
I replied, "I'm fine. The scars will 'eal with time."
"You were not injured."
"Not from a bullet." Silence.
"My dear, I trust you know how to keep a secret?" he asked.
"Sir, I've lived on the streets for eight years. I know 'ow to keep a secret," I responded.
"Have you ever heard of a man named, 'Jean Valjean'?"
"No."
"Well, he stole some bread to save his sister's son. He slaved away in prison for nineteen years before he was freed. But, he broke his parole to forget about the crimes he had committed. Now, child, I ask you, who am I?"
"You're Jean Valjean," I answered, putting two and two together.
"Promise me never to tell Cosette. She must never know."
"I won't. Why don't you tell Marius?"
"I will. After that, I must leave."
"I'll go with you. To make sure you get there safely. And, I can't be at the wedding. It's too soon for a 'appy occasion."
"Alright then."
(Afterthis,it'stheepilogue)
Three weeks later, I was sitting at a church holding Valjean's hand. The poor man was running out of time, and he was singing himself to death. I don't think he even registered me.
"Alone, I wait in the shadows,
I count the hours till I can sleep.
I dreamed a dream Cosette stood by.
It made her weep to know I die.
Alone, at the end of the day
upon this wedding night I pray,
Take these children to thy embrace,
and show them grace.
God on high, hear my prayer.
Take me now, to thy care.
Where you are, let me be.
Take me there, bring me home.
Bring me home."
Just then, a woman I had never seen before and Seraina came down out of nowhere. The one I couldn't recognize sang,
"Monsieur, I bless your name."
Then Seraina,
"Monsieur, lay down your burden."
"You raised my child in love."
Oh, so she was Cosette's mother!
"And you will be with God."
Just then, Cosette and Marius came running in, Cosette singing,
"Papa, Papa, I do not understand.
Are you alright, they said you'd gone away."
"Cosette, my child, am I forgiven now?
Thank God, thank God, I live to see this day."
Marius chimed in,
"It's you who must forgive thoughtless fool.
It's you, how must forgive a thankless man.
It's thanks to you that I am living,
and again I lay my life down at your feet.
Cosette, your father is saint.
When they wounded me, he took me from the
barricade, carried like a babe, and brought me home,
to you."
Valjean smiled weakly, singing to Cosette,
"Now you are here, again beside me.
Now I can die in peace, for now my life is
blessed."
Cosette denied,
"You will live, Papa, you're going to live.
It's too soon, too soon to say goodbye."
"Yes, Cosette, forbid me now to die. I'll obey.
I will try. On this page, I write my last
confession. Read it well, when I at last
am sleeping. It's the story, of those who always
loved you. Your mother gave her life to you
and gave you to my keeping."
Cosette's Mother sang once again, Eponine joining her side silently,
"Come with me, where chains will never bind you."
Serania joined in,
"All your grief, at last, at last, behind you."
"Lord in heaven, look down on him in mercy."
Valjean took over,
"Forgive me for my trespasses,
and take me to your keeping."
The three ghosts sang at one time, Valjean joining them near the end,
"Take my hand, I'll bring you to salvation.
Take my love, for love is everlasting.
And remember, the truth that once was spoken.
To love another person, is to see the face of God."
Then, as Jean Valjean passed away, you could hear the voices of all who fell singing all at once.
"Do you hear the people sing?
Lost in the valley of the night.
It is the music of a people who are climbing
to the light.
For the wretched of the earth, there is a
flame that never dies. Even the darkest
night will end and the sun will rise.
They will live again in freedom in the
garden of the Lord. They will walk
behind the bloodshed, they will put away the sword.
The chain will be broken and all men will have their reward!
Will you join in our crusade, who will be strong and
stay with me? Somewhere beyond the barricade is there a
world you long to see?
Do you you hear the people sing?
Say do you hear the distant drums?
It its the future that they bring when tomorrow
comes.
Do you you hear the people sing?
Say do you hear the distant drums?
It its the future that they bring when tomorrow
comes.
Oh, tomorrow comes!"
So, yeah, this is the last official chapter. Next is the epilogue, which has the Phantom song, which I've pretty much decided is Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again. It's been really fun, but all good things must end. Worry not, I still have my Enljoras story coming up, although I still haven't developed her enough.
Justin: Will this be your first multi-chapter completed story.
Me: Yup! By the way, I have a date on when the epilogue will be up. The 26th. Why? Because that's when I began this story and when I joined Fanfiction in general. So what better way to celebrate than finishing my first story?
Justin: Your brother has been asking for a Pokemon story.
Me: I CAN'T DO THAT RIGHT NOW! I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START! THERE ARE A LOT OF REGIONS!
Justin: Sorry I brought it up...
Me: Anyway! I have also been busy watching anime, mostly Durarara and Attack On Titan. Both really great shows. I highly recommend both.
Justin: You might want to finish Durarara first...
Me: Shush! Anyway, thank you all for reading, and of course,...
Both: REVIEW!
