Chapter 4: The Dauntless

As if nothing big happened, the Choosing Ceremony continued. I went to the group of kids that transferred.

"Hello," one of the teens who stayed in their faction. "My name is Uriah."

"I smiled to him and said, "Nice to meet you I'm-"
He put his hand over my mouth and said, "You can't say your name yet."
I muffled out a, "Why not?"
He gave me a toothy grin and took his hand off my mouth, "Because, you can change it if you pass the first test."

"But what's the first test?"

His smile grew wider, his eyes twinkling with amusement, "It's a surprise."

And with that he left me to go and talk to other people. When the last person cut their the Dauntless started to whoop and the more experienced Dauntless people started to run towards the stairs. I started to run in the back, going down flights of stairs. Just as I thought it would never end, I bursted through the front doors of the Closing Ceremony building and into the crisp night air. But the Dauntless didn't stop there, they just kept on running. Then they started to jump over obstacles on the sides of buildings, I just ignored them and continued to run straight. I heard a train coming, but we didn't stop. The Dauntless started to jump on the train.

When it was the Transfers turn to jump, we all got on board safely, except one. An Erudite boy, the same boy from my faction, didn't let run fast enough. I saw an Abnegation girl holding out her hand, encouraging him in fact. But it was too late, he'll become a factionless. I watching him fall to the ground, crying of defeat. I will probably never see this boy again, this thought made me feel guilty for not knowing his name.

I sat down, trying to catch my breath. Uriah came and sat next to me. He wasn't breathing heavily as I was.

He smiled and said, "How's that for the beginning of the first test?"

Between breaths, I managed to say, "Wait, that was only the beginning?"

His smile grew, "You're not enjoying to the run? That's usually the best part!"

I looked up at him, "Wait that was only the first part?"

He nodded and I just looked at him in disbelief. I looked away to study

the colored graffiti on this train. Then the Dauntless hollered and the ones sitting, got up. I got up in confusion, then they shouted and jumped off. I started to panic, Uriah came behind me and took my hand. His touch seemed to make me melt inside. When we finally got to the exit Uriah let go of my hand and jumped off. I swallowed and hoped to live as I jumped off after him.

I was in the air for a few seconds. Everything in my mind was blank on was to do. Then I felt my body hit the ground and lost balanced. I stumbled and hit the gravel hard, rolling a few feet before finally stopping. Uriah ran towards me, and with a helping hand, helped me up. Somehow, I broke no bones, I only had scratches and probably a few bruises are going to show tomorrow.

"Are you okay," Uriah asked, eyes filled with concern.

I forced a smiled, "Honestly, it didn't hurt as bad as it looked."

He took my hand and smiled back, together we went to where all the Dauntless were grouping together. The Dauntless adults were gone, nowhere to be found.

A person who looked about 19 cleared his throat, "May I have your attention. My name is Eric. For the next part of your journey, You will jump on this building," he pointed down towards something, "and into this hole."

"What's down there?" The Candor girl said with confidence.

The tattooed and pierced man, Eric, smiled at her strangely and said, "Why don't you find out?"

The Candor girl was about to say something else when the only Abnegation transfer raised her voice and said, "I'll go first."

Eric looked thrown off, he obviously hadn't expected that. He got his composure back together and said, "Fine, go ahead Stiff. Jump if you can."

The girl took a deep breath and started to walk towards the end of the roof. She looked down as she got up on the ledge, and with a shaky breath, jumped off into nothingness.

Everyone was in shock. No one knew what would happen to the girl. Soon, there was a shout and Eric said, "Who's next?"

Butterflies filled my stomach. I knew what I was doing was risky, but I have to face the inevitable to get away from my mother. With a shaky breath, I said, "I will."

Eric's eyes twinkled with amusement, but there was also something deeper to his gaze. I was pretty sure that he knew who I was. "Okay Erudite. Let's see if you can have the audaciouness like the Stiff.

This is crazy, I thought. I can't believe I'm going to die from jumping off a building. With reluctance, I got up on the ledge of the building, and with a shaky breath, I jumped.

It felt like forever, everything was in slow motion. And it was torture. Nothing seemed like reality. Then, I hit something and bounced back up. But not all the way since some of the kinetic energy was transformed into potential energy, causing me to slowly stop from falling.

A man got me off the trampoline like thing and said, "What's your name. You can change it if you like, but make it good."

Excitement filled me. Maybe I can start over here, I thought. And with all the adrenaline rushing out of me, I said, "Jess, my name is Jess."

Hey guys! Sorry I haven't been on as much. I've been thinking lately that I should switch websites for this story. Should I? or should I not? or should I just post on both? All opinions are accepted (the majority vote wins!). Please Inbox me or comment in the comments section. Oh, and please don't kill me for what happened between Jessica and Uriah, I have plans for them *smirks*.
