Ami Mizuno had been used to being bullied by other children at an early age. Bullies had been people who habitually seek to harm or intimidate those whom they perceive as vulnerable by calling them names and degrading them with insults or even getting physical with them. Ami came to be an easy target for bullies due to her brains and common sense and the diligence to which she devoted a majority of her time to academics for it was important to her to always do her best at anything she set her mind to doing. Her classmates or rather her bullies did not accept her for who she was, believed nothing in her, cared nothing for her, and disliked her and enjoyed calling her names and degrading her with insults due to the attention she got from how well she performed in school.

Ami did not deny that she liked to her best in school as she came to do her homework and did study for exams in her bedroom late at night after she got home from cram school every day after school. Being at school was the only place where she felt safe to keep control over her emotions and feelings of the loneliness she suffered from not having friends her own age other than the praise she received for her hard work from her teachers. Ami came to fill every free spot of her day in her calendar crammed with some sort of activity: art classes, books, chess, daily harp lessons, and swimming. Any healthy or intellectual activity good for her brain and common sense or the deep need to please her mother so that she would remain in good shape and healthy she did which did not require much social interaction for it helped her to escape the anger, bitterness, contempt, and disgust that seemed to follow her wherever she went.

Ami ended up trying to fit in, she really did, but she was not able to break down the barriers surrounding both her classmates and her from the entire whole different worlds which in they lived. For her these things had been in the interests she had that differed from the other girls in her class. Fashion was not something she was into as she did not care to keep up with what clothes, hairstyles, or makeup was in style for she considered herself to be a conversative dresser and did not use makeup very often other than the Cherry Chapstick she used to keep her lips from getting chapped or dry. Going out to eat fast food in fast food restaurants or shopping, heading out to see a movie, or karaoke were things that other girls in her class did that she did not do. Most girls her age would not like to go to an arts and crafts store or a book store as much as she did for if she kept herself busy she could forget about how much it hurt not to be accused of being a rich and stuck-up snob who thought she was better than everyone else around her for having the best grades in the entire whole nation and a teacher's pet due to how much praise they bestowed on her for being the top student in school. So, she gave up trying to fit in and get friends as the calling of names and degrading of insults got even worse. This would lead her giving into the tears she withheld every day during school which she would release whenever she got back home into her pillows and see her get all of them out of her.

The taunts never left her.

"Attention-seeker!"

"Bookworm!"

"Brainy, but conceited in making herself look better than the others!"

"Constantly asking teachers if learning a hundred vocabulary words a day is enough or if they think that she should learn even more as if any normal person would think about doing so!"

"Did you know that her mother is a rich and successful doctor so that she can have whatever she wants? Expensive clothes, fine pretentious lunch boxes. Even the pencils and pens she uses when coming to do her homework and doing tests are the most expensive kind! She goes to the best cram schools in Japan after school! However, it has all gone to her head! She thinks that she is better than everyone else due to how wealthy she is!"

"It eats her alive if she gets even one answer on a test wrong and frets that being ten chapters ahead in our textbooks is not far enough to be!"

"Freak!"

"Geek!"

"Rude!"

"She never gets a zit on her flawless skin, and she never gains weight even though all she does is read books and sit on her butt all day!"

"Stuck-up snob!"

"Teacher's pet!"

"With an attitude like hers it is no wonder she has no friends!"

Her mother came to say that Ami's blue hair, blue eyes, common dainty straight nose, delicate mouth with even white teeth and fair pink lips, and fair white skin made her beautiful and her looks as well as her brains made her stand out. Saeko did say that girls were envious of her not gaining weight due to low self-esteem and to how good in shape and healthy she was from her what the nutritional food that she ate, coming to drink apple juice and bottled water every day, and the diligent exercise she did through swimming on a daily basis. This ended up being why they called her names and degraded her with insults for they did not realize that daily exercise and healthy drinks and foods rather than the junk food they ate and sugary drinks they drank made them weigh more than she did. Envy and fury over her not trying to use her brain and her common sense and her desire to learn everything that she could made her a target for bullies. For her mother this made sense as to why her classmates would single her out to bully. It got her to feel guilty for she could not help the way she looked and she would never stop using her brains, her common sense, and her diligence to excel to at everything she did. It had made her who she actually was and the basic characteristics of her own personality and it was not something she felt that she could change about herself.

Ami knew that bullies only called other people names and degraded them with insults to feel better about themselves for they envied others for their appearances, brains, clothes, the desired ability to never gain weight no matter what they ate or drank which she appeared to have, their extracurricular activities, their financial status, their grades, and their homelives. Big target is what she was. She could not help it if she was luckier in some areas where others lacked, but others had areas that she envied and that made her even angry and bitter towards them for having what she lacked. Ami desired to live in a world where her parents had remained able to accept each other for who they were, believe in each other, care about each other, and deeply love each other and ended up staying married and perhaps even giving her a little brother or sister someday. She enjoyed the idea of being a big sister. Ami felt envious of her classmates who had ate meals together as a family and got to spend as much quality time as they could with their parents. It got to her that they could not see how lucky they were in comparison to what she had. However, bullies never took the time to realize how lucky they were and see what they had in comparison to what others lucked.

Ami hoped one day the bullies would leave her alone, but she doubted it.
