Maura laughed. Loudly and unashamedly. Jane looked up at her in disbelief and could see in her face that Maura didn't expect to be laughing either, but she was. It was a beautiful sound that was instantaneously infectious and Jane began to laugh too.
The absolute absurdity of the situation was what struck Maura first but it was topped off by the fact that when Jane had covered her face with her hands she had left a streak of cream across her cheek and nose. Once the random giggles subsided Maura reached out and wiped the cream delicately off the brunette's face and was rewarded with a lopsided smile and a dimple that she found inexplicably adorable.
As Maura's touch lingered on her face Jane felt herself grow red and hot and she backed away hurriedly "I'm sorry, I walked in on you getting changed and tried to explain but didn't and now I got cream everywhere and it's all just a mess and I'm sorry. I'm so sorry Maura." Emotions began to swell up inside of her and she sat down heavily on the end of the bed trying desperately to swipe away her hot tears; hating herself for getting emotional when she was supposed to stay strong and make amends.
Maura slipped on a robe and knelt down at the brunette's feet wondering what on earth was going on. They sat in silence for a moment and Maura stroked the brunette's unruly curls until her tears slowed.
Jane wiped her eyes and silently scolded herself for being weak. She took a deep breath and forced herself to look into Maura's eyes which were swimming with concern for her. In that moment Jane truly realised just what she had done. She had betrayed a true friend. They may not have known each other long or even very well, but the fact that Maura was concerned for her well being in spite of what was going on with her just confirmed what she was feeling; she was the lowest of the low.
Maura searched those deep chocolate eyes for something, anything to tell her what was going on but she found she couldn't read them, there was so much emotion there and yet so many different emotions she had no idea what Jane was thinking. She took Jane's hands in her own and just sat quietly, trusting that if Jane wanted to talk, she would.
A couple of minutes passed on silence. Jane's mind was racing. How do I tell her? How do I tell her I betrayed her? How can I even begin to justify myself? She'd have been better if she never met me. But then thoughts of Garrett entered her mind. She deserves more than that, more than him. She finally opened her mouth to speak when she heard a deep booming voice outside the door.
"Yeah boss, looking now."
Jane's eyes opened wide with fear and she clenched Maura's hand so tightly it hurt but she had no time to react or make a sound as Jane pulled her to her feet and motioned for her to be quiet.
Shit! It's Cav's hulk! Jane panicked she pulled Maura up and frantically looked around, without hesitation she flung them both into the huge closet on one side of the room and held her hand across Maura's mouth; there was no time to give her instructions.
Maura was terrified, she had never seen fear instantly take over a person like that but she could only imagine what they were hiding from. She had an instinctive trust in Jane, she couldn't explain why but she did and she followed it without question.
Jane held Maura as tightly as she could without hurting her and listened intently. She heard the goon open the door and enter the room. She heard his heavy footsteps walk around and get ever closer to where they were. She heard electronic noises and his voice boomed out so loudly it made Maura jump in her arms.
"Boss. Found her room." Jane couldn't make out the response on the other end but she could tell it was Cav, and he was pissed. "Dress." There was a long period of Cav talking, presumably giving him instructions because Jane heard him hang up the phone and then heard his footsteps leaving the room.
Maura's heart was pounding. It was clear someone was looking for her, but who? Who was this 'boss'? Was it Garrett? Knowing his true nature Maura couldn't imagine he'd want anyone else to do his dirty work he enjoyed it too much. Something sparked in her mind and she turned to Jane curiously "Why are you here?"
Jane swallowed hard and opened the door cautiously "I will explain everything Maura, properly, I swear but first we have to get out of here." She took her by the hand and began to creep toward the bedroom door when she felt resistance. Maura wasn't moving and Jane's heart sank.
"But it's my wedding day." Maura felt strangely numb as she stared at her wedding dress and tried to make sense of what was going on.
Jane turned back to her and gently held Maura's face in her hands until those hazel eyes finally swung her way "I would rather die than leave you here and let you marry that animal."
The brunette's words were so sincere they actually physically hurt her and made her heart ache. She had no words but instead gave Jane a small nod and was once more taken by the hand and led away from her married fate.
