"Jane Clementine Rizzoli!"
Jane winced, not only did she hate her middle name but it also was also a sure fire way to know that she was in big trouble. She caught the beautiful woman stood next to her out of sight on the porch try to stifle a giggle and the brunette blushed a deep shade of crimson. "Hi Ma."
Angela glared at her daughter through the screen door. "Hi Ma?! That's all I get? I've been worried sick! You've been ignoring my calls, not been in your flat! You could have been dead!"
"I wasn't dead Ma." Jane made the fatal mistake of rolling her eyes.
"And how did I know that? Honestly Janie after everything I'm going through right now you'd think you might wanna be there for me!" Angela couldn't help the tears that were forming, they were a mix of angry tears and desperate tears.
Jane felt the lump appear in her throat and the guilt settle heavily in the pit of her stomach. "Ma, I-"
Maura watched as Jane struggled against her emotions and she felt her own tugging at her and she stepped out from around the corner. "Mrs Rizzoli? You don't know me but I'm a friend of June's and it's my fault she hasn't been around I'm afraid. You see I..." Maura trailed off as she considered how on earth to explain the situation and events leading up to now and faltered.
Jane looked at Maura and they both wore the same blank expression, how did they explain everything? It had been such a whirlwind of madness. Jane couldn't help the smile that spread across her face when she looked at that beautiful woman who had quite literally stumbled into her life and nothing had been the same since, and though it had been tough Jane couldn't think of anything else she wanted more than to be stood there with Maura right now.
Angela watched as her daughter looked at the strange woman next to her and her whole expression changed, she had never seen Janie look like that before; she looked so peaceful and happy, she wore such a soft smile and Angela couldn't help but feel her stubbornness give way a little. "Well Janie, don't let your friend stand out on the porch in her...robe..." The older woman frowned as she took in the stranger's attire and down to her feet which were bare.
Maura felt a blush travel from her cheeks to her toes as Jane's mother took in her appearance and she subconsciously touched her cheek, she regretted it immediately and winced at the pain bringing back the painful memories from earlier that day.
The action did not go unnoticed by either Rizzoli who exchanged a look which silently communicated a mutual understanding; no questions. Angela opened her screen door and ushered Maura in, pushing past Jane and fussing over her new house guest.
Jane watched fondly as Maura was dragged away by her Ma she let out a laugh as Maura looked back over her shoulder with mild concern as she was whisked away. "Don't worry Maur, she's harmless...mostly!" The brunette wandered over to the fridge and opened it in hope of finding a cold beer, instead what she found was a cold shock. The fridge was bare, and anyone that knew Angela Rizzoli could tell you her fridge was never bare, it was her Italian background, she was always cooking it seemed. The cold harsh reality before her struck Jane hard, she hadn't realised things were this bad. Her thoughts went back to laying the money outside Garrett's door and she felt a twinge of regret.
Maura watched the Rizzoli matriarch fuss around her rooting through drawers muttering to herself about Jane, or 'Janie' rather and she found herself growing increasingly fond of both brunettes. She could see where Jane got her kindness, and her scattiness and she could also see why Jane had done all the things she had done. Maura's mother had never been the warm emotional type of mother and it had never really bothered her, it was her normality, but seeing how genuine and caring Angela was Maura could see why Jane strived to do her utmost to help.
Angela rustled through Janie's clothes trying desperately to find something for the young woman to wear, she was chatting nervously to the poor girl about anything and everything trying her hardest not to bring up the odd situation she found herself in, or that purpling cheek. Angela had always had a happy marriage, well a normal marriage, or so she thought. Yes they had had their ups and downs but every marriage does and deep down they really loved each other under the yelling, or so she thought. It felt like yesterday Frank announced he was leaving, she could remember it all so clearly. It came so out of the blue that she had let him leave without a word, without a fight, she didn't really believe it was happening. It wasn't until the papers came through that the cold harsh reality hit her, not only was her marriage truly over but the man she had loved for years turned out to be a different person; her Frank wouldn't have taken her for all she had, all they had, all they had worked hard for. In his note, however, it was clear someone had not only turned his head but turned his personality upside down, he stated how he deserved it all as she never worked while they were together. Initially Angela had exploded at that; "He doesn't think raising three babies alone is work?! Where was he? He'd come home to them all tucked up in bed, he wouldn't lift a finger at home – too tired from the job!"
Maura looked up as her ears pricked up the mumbling under the woman's breath, she was talking about her husband, Maura knew she should keep her mouth shut and butt out but she just couldn't help herself, she felt such a connection to this warm hearted woman already and she felt for her. "Must have been hard."
Angela turned and blushed furiously as she realized she must have spoken out loud "Oh I'm sorry, I didn't mean to-" She tried to fight but the fat tears just spilled out of her eyes and no matter how much she swiped at them there was no erasing them, she felt so silly.
Maura wasn't usually one for physical affection; another trait her own mother had instilled in her, but she instinctually got up and lay her arm around the older woman and led her over to sit on the bed next to her. She stiffened as the woman fell apart in her arms but she soon relaxed and embraced the poor woman, she now had some sort of inkling what she must have felt, after the discoveries she had made about her own 'love'.
It had gone suspiciously quiet and Jane had horrific images of her Ma showing Maura baby photos. She jumped up and rushed into the room only to be confronted by a sight she never thought she would see; her Ma being cradled in Maura's arms. Without a word Jane slipped in and took Maura's place smiling at her gratefully.
Maura watched the pair rock gently for a couple of minutes and felt her heart swell with love and pride at these strong women; they were so unlike the women she had had in her life and yet just a strong, if not stronger, they had overcome so much and were still supporting one another.
"What are we gonna do Janie? Where am I gonna go?"
"We're gonna figure it out Ma, you'll see, you stay with me for a while, it's not the Ritz but I'll pull extra shifts, I'll get another job, we'll do this. Come on, we're Rizzolis, we don't just give up."
"No." The word blurted out of her mouth and she didn't even realize it had until two sets of Rizzoli eyes frowned curiously at her. She cleared her throat nervously. "I know I don't know you, Mrs Rizzoli-"
"Angela, please."
"Angela, but your daughter has done a great deal for me, more than you will know, and I want to repay her, you, both." Maura stammered over her words. "I have a friend, with a house, he is worked overseas and has always said the house is mine as long as he has a bed when he is back. I would like to offer you that house Angela."
Jane stared at Maura open mouthed and shook her head "No, Maur-"
"No, please Jane. It has a guest house so we wouldn't encroach on each other's space, and Jane could of course visit at any time, or stay…" Maura's voice grew quiet and timid and she blushed a deep red before hurriedly moving on. "It would not be charity, once you are on your feet you would pay your way, but it would be my pleasure to help you, if I can."
Angela shook her head in disbelief at this stranger barely wearing any clothes who was offering her a house. "No, I couldn't."
Maura smiled fondly at the older woman "It would be a great comfort to me, to have a friend there. I am not accustomed to living alone, I wouldn't enjoy it I'm sure." Maura had no time to react as the older woman flew off the bed and crashed into her crushing her in a huge bear hug. Maura could do nothing but laugh heartily as she tried to keep her balance, but her smile faded as she noticed the other woman in the room did not share their excitement. "Jane?"
Jane shook her head "You can't." She got up off the bed and left the room with a grave expression on her face. "You can't."
