"We're home," Laura called as she walked through the front door, Venus at her side almost instantly. Bill greeted Venus quickly, then disappeared down the hallway to change his clothes.
"Hey, how did it go?" Kara asked sheepishly. They'd told her Cottle wanted to see them, and she could tell by Laura's tone that they had both been worried.
"It went... Well? We have some news, that's for sure!"
"Oh?" Kara asked, not wanting to pry, but at the same time wanting to know what the "news" was.
"We're having twins," Laura whispered in an attempt to keep her daughter from hearing.
"Oh my Gods!" Kara exclaimed, clapping her hand over her mouth in shock.
"What?" Venus asked, tugging at her mother's hand. "I wanna know the secret."
"We'll tell you later, I promise," Laura said, picking her up to give her a kiss on the cheek.
"Okay well, I'm gonna get going. I'll definitely be calling you later," Kara said. She had a lot of questions and she planned to get answers.
With Kara gone and Bill wearing comfortable clothing, Laura gathered Venus up in her arms and carried her over to the couch. After placing her in Bill's lap, Laura took a seat next to them, smiling the entire time.
"We have some very exciting news for you," Bill began, squeezing Venus a little tighter.
"Is it the secret?" She asked, looking up at Laura expectantly. Bill raised an eyebrow, but decided not to ask.
"Yes, it is."
"Venus, do you know what twins are?" Bill asked. She shook her head.
"Twins are when..." Bill trailed off, suddenly realizing he had no idea how to explain the concept of twins to a three year old. Laura sighed, realizing she'd have to come to the rescue once again. Bill was forever thankful for Laura's years of experience with small children.
"Twins are when somebody has two babies at the same time instead of one. Sometimes they look the same, and sometimes they don't." Laura explained easily.
"Okay," Venus nodded in understanding.
"Well, we found out today that mommy is having twins. You're going to have two little sisters," Bill said. Venus gasped, giving her mother an excited smile.
If they had thought Venus's reaction to finding out she was going to have one younger sister was bad, they surely weren't ready for this. It took them over an hour to get her settled down.
"Ouch," Laura muttered, rubbing the same spot on her stomach that the baby had been kicking all day.
"She's very persistent today, isn't she?" Bill chuckled.
"Yes and she needs to ease up because it frakking hurts." Laura sighed, letting her head fall back against the armrest of the couch.
"Language," Bill reminded her lightly, to which she responded by throwing a pillow at his head. They were trying to clean up their language before the baby was born, and neither of them were particularly thrilled about it.
"Is there anything I can do for you?" He felt bad that she was uncomfortable, especially since it didn't happen too often these days. She was at the beginning of her eighth month and it was putting her a little on edge.
"No. I might go for a walk. Cottle said it would be a good idea to be on my feet a bit more."
"Would you like some company?" He asked, already knowing the answer.
"Of course," she replied, already moving to stand up.
As they walked along, they fell into step, enjoying the comfortable silence between them. Laura was leaning on Bill, their arms linked and her head on his shoulder.
"Who do you think she'll look like?" Laura asked, laying her free hand over her stomach thoughtfully.
"She's going to look like you. She'll have your beautiful red hair, your stunning green eyes, and your adorable nose," Bill said. She blushed and raised an eyebrow.
"My nose is adorable?"
"Oh yes, along with your everything else." He answered, giving her arm a small squeeze.
"Hm, I think she'll have your nose." Laura said, reaching up to tap him on the nose for emphasis.
"Gods help her if she does!"
Laura bent her head back and laughed, stopping mid-stride. Nobody could make her laugh the way Bill Adama could.
Two days after the excitement of finding out about the twins calmed down, Venus felt her baby sisters moving for the first time.
She had been playing with her stuffed animals on the floor while Laura had her morning tea, when both babies began kicking.
"Venus, if you want to feel the babies you'd better hurry," she said. So far they had quite the reputation for only moving when nobody else was around.
Venus scrambled up onto the couch and held her hand out to her mother, waiting for her to place it in the right spot. Laura expected her to react similarly to the way Lee had the first time he felt her kick, but Venus surprised her by bending down and planting a kiss against her stomach. Laura sniffled and Venus looked up at her.
"Why are you crying, Mommy?" She asked softly. "Are you sad?"
"No, no. I'm happy," Laura said, running her fingers through her daughter's hair.
"What are the babies names?" She asked abruptly, moving to lay her head against Laura's shoulder.
"We don't know yet. Daddy and I haven't even talked about it," Laura admitted.
"Oh," was all Venus had to say about that. Laura wished she could capture this moment and keep it forever.
"Are you two going to lie around all day?" Bill joked as he walked into the room.
"I'm carrying two babies around inside me, I'll lay around if I want to," Laura replied. Venus giggled.
"Are you really going to play that card?" He asked.
"Oh yes. Daily." She responded with a smirk.
"Soon it won't be just us anymore," Laura said quietly, looking down at her stomach fondly. They were sitting side by side in bed, Bill reading, and Laura listening.
"No, it won't," Bill nodded.
"Does that bother you?" She asked. He shook his head.
"No, of course it doesn't. Does it bother you?"
"Not in the slightest," she smiled. She was testing him.
"You think you're so funny don't you?" He asked, nudging her with his shoulder.
"Oh yes. I think I'm hilarious." She patted her stomach as she felt a kick, smiling even bigger. "Our daughter thinks her mommy is funny too."
"She thinks I'm funnier than you, it's a fact." Bill said, placing his hand over Laura's. Laura mock-gasped.
"She does not! Tell your daddy how funny I am," she commanded, staring down at her rounded stomach. When they both felt several thumps against their hands, Laura gave him a triumphant smile.
"She was agreeing with me," Bill said matter-of-factly.
"No, she was agreeing with me!"
"I guess we'll have to wait and ask her when she's born," Bill sighed dramatically.
"I don't need to ask her, I already know," Laura said. Bill chuckled, wrapping an arm around her.
"If you say so," he replied.
"Caprica's coming over for dinner tonight," Laura said, sitting down at the kitchen table and using one of the extra chairs to put her feet up.
"Is she bringing her husband?"
Laura laughed and shook her head.
"No. She's very excited, she hasn't seen me since I was barely showing," Laura smiled.
"Have you told her it's twins yet?" Bill asked, giving her a small smile. He genuinely liked Caprica, and was glad she and Laura had such a strong friendship.
"Yes, over the phone. I thought she was going to have a heart attack."
"I can't wait to see her face when she sees you," he said casually.
"Why, because I've gotten so huge?" She asked, giving him a warning look.
"No, because her smile will be so huge," he answered. Laura smirked. He wasn't wrong about that.
A knock at the door signaled to Bill and Laura that their dinner guest had arrived, but it was Venus who ran to answer it.
"Hi Caprica," she said happily.
"Hello Venus. How are you?" Caprica asked as she picked the child up.
"Good. Mommy and Daddy are in the kitchen," she informed her.
"Well I'd better go in and say hello!" She smiled when Venus giggled. Setting the child down, she followed her into the kitchen, where Laura and Bill were finishing up cooking.
"Laura, it's so good to see you!" She exclaimed, pulling Laura in for a hug.
"Oh it's good to see you too! How have you been?"
"I've been well, and yourself? How are you feeling?" Caprica asked, taking a step back to get a better look at Laura's stomach.
"I'm alright. Not feeling too great, but that's to be expected," she said.
"Four girls against Bill Adama, that ought to be interesting," she joked, giving Bill a smirk. He laughed, crossing the room to give Caprica a hug.
"And that's not even including Kara and Brooke!" He pointed out.
The rest of the dinner went by quickly. It mostly consisted of catching up, talking about the babies, and keeping Venus entertained. Caprica was good with Venus, as most people were. There was something about her and her charm, that seemed to make people more comfortable around her.
Shortly after Caprica left, the Adama-Roslin family went through their nightly routine. Laura gave Venus a bath and put her in her pajamas. She then handed her off to Bill and went to get ready for bed herself. It was Laura's night to read to Venus, so after everyone was clean and ready for bed, they settled into Venus's bed and Laura read aloud. When she was through, she snapped the book shut and gave Venus a tired smile.
"Alright, it's bedtime," she said. Venus nodded and pulled her stuffed bear closer to her. Laura noticed her reaching for her stuffed horse as well, which was unusual. She never slept with anything other than her bear. Once the stuffed horse was in her grasp, she turned and placed it on top of Laura's belly.
"Babies need a stuffed animal too," she said. Laura smiled, leaning down to kiss her daughter goodnight.
"Thank you, sweetheart. I'll be sure to keep it with me."
"Why do you have Venus's horse?" Bill asked when Laura climbed into bed and placed it over her bump.
"She gave it to me. She said it was for the babies," Laura informed him. He chuckled, pulling Laura close.
"She's already such a good big sister."
Laura smiled. He was certainly right about that.
