Chapter 19
Robin and Patrick were now alone sitting on the couch. Robin continued to stare at Emma in the picture. She remembered how she was trying to give them one last memorable Christmas. Her mind was filling in the blanks and each memory felt like a stab in the heart. She felt so much hurt and anger at herself and she had no idea how to reclaim her life.
"I'm sorry," she said. She turned her body to face him. "I'm sorry for not remembering you. I blew everyone off. I was so cold to everybody that tried to help me," she finished quietly.
Patrick grabbed her hand. "No one blames you. Jerry is to blame for everything. He is the one who took you from us and turned your life upside down. You shouldn't even blame yourself."
"But I've done so many things. Things he made me do. I was in this fog for so long. I'm not sure how to be a doctor anymore. How am I going to move forward? How are we going to move forward?"
"One day at a time," he replied. She nodded her head appreciatively.
"Where's Emma?" she asked changing the subject.
"She's with Sabrina," he answered.
"Sabrina. Does Emma like her?" Robin questioned.
"Yeah. A whole lot actually. See, I was with Sabrina...romantically. I stopped it once I found out you were alive," he said softly. He waited for her to say something.
"Do you love her?" she asked.
"Robin-
"Do you love her?" she repeated.
"Not in the way I love you," he responded. "I was moving on like you told me. If I had known I wouldn't have pursued anything. Robin, believe me...
"Patrick, stop. I'm not mad. I have no right to be mad. I don't expect you to stop having feelings for her. It seems like she was a huge part of your life and Emma's and still is. It's just it's a little weird knowing you had someone else here. I know you couldn't live in neutral this entire time."
Patrick smiled. "Thank you for understanding." She nodded.
"I can't wait to see Emma. How are we going to break this to her?" she asked.
"Let me handle that," he said.
"Do you think she'll be glad to see me?" she questioned.
"Of course she will just like I am glad to see you," he said. He stood up and held out his hand. "Ready to go to bed?"
"But I don't have any clothes," she responded.
"I never cleaned out your drawers," he said. "Let's go." She grabbed his hand and he led her to the bedroom.
She was fast asleep when her phone buzzed. She grabbed it and immediately sat up. Her eyes narrowed when she recognized the number. She opened the text and it read:
You can never escape me my dear Robin.
Jerry
