Previously on The Games of Olympus:
"It probably wasn't that bad." Hazel tried to reassure her brother. Nico had just told her about his epic fail in the training room earlier that day. Nico just shook his head.
"You should have seen me. I wasn't concentrating enough and now I have a slit artery and a broken ankle. How can my day get worse? Oh wait, I know! I could get a sh*t score from the judges and have no sponsors!" Nico angrily snapped at his half-sister and limped off towards his room. He wasn't in a good mood thanks to his broken ankle and his horrible performance in front of the judges. He didn't want Hazel's pity. He just wanted to go and train, but thanks to his broken ankle and slit wrist he couldn't.
Nico hobbled over towards the chest of draws beside his bed and opened the first draw. Inside the draw lay a bag of Ambrosia and a water bottle filled with Nectar. Nico swallowed three bits of Ambrosia and took a sip of Nectar to take some of the pain away.
Still in a bad mood, but unsure of what else to do Nico climbed into bed and tried to sleep.
Emma Willows sat on her bed, waiting for the scores to be announced. She hoped she would get a good score and lots of sponsors. She knew that if her identical twin sister Amanda was here she would know what to do. However, unlike what Emma wanted, she was sitting alone in a cold room, waiting.
Sometime while Emma was waiting for the television broadcast to begin, Emma fell asleep, dreaming of the day she and Amanda ran away from home and joined the hunt.
"Come on Amanda! It's only two stories. You'll be fine I promise." Emma called out to her twin who was currently standing three metres away from the window.
"What if I hurt myself? What if I break a bone or something?" Amanda called back to Emma. Even though the twins were the same age, you wouldn't be able to tell. Emma was the daredevil, the one who constantly got into trouble and the one that looked after both of them when their uncle was on one of his drunken rampages. Whilst Amanda was the smart one, always getting good grades.
"Would you rather a broken bone or be stuck here? We might not get a chance to leave again!" Emma tried to persuade her sister and she finally succeeded. As afraid of breaking a bone Amanda was, she was more afraid of her uncle. At the moment her uncle was on his way to one of his friends (it surprised the girls that he even had any friends) places and probably wouldn't be back until the next day. This gave the girls a chance to escape from his beating, his drunkenness and his addiction to drugs.
"Okay. Let's do it together." Amanda said as she tried to sound and stepped up to the window sill.
"I wouldn't have it any other way but together." Emma grabbed her sister's hand as Amanda sat down next to Emma. "Remember, once we land roll into a ball and do a summersault like I showed you before." Emma reminded her twin as she pushed off of the windowsill.
Whilst they were falling, they had let go of each other's hands, so when they landed on the cold, wet grass they were able to do the summersault that would hopefully prevent a broken ankle.
Once they had stood up and brushed off the wet grass from their tattered clothing, the two girls picked up the small backpack that contained all of their clothes and as much food as they could get their hands of. Emma took the backpack from her sister and slipped it on, taking off into the night with her sister following closely behind.
Emma awoke from her dream to the sound of someone knocking on her door. "Come in." Emma called out, her voice was still husky from just waking up. The door opened to reveal Artemis.
"Come on Emma, they're about to announce the scores." She said to her briefly before leaving Emma alone on the room once again.
Sighing to herself, Emma pulled the covers off of her and headed out into the lounge room where a massive flat screen television was. Just as Emma entered the room, she saw the logo of Olympus flash on the screen and then she saw a face she didn't recognise. He started, talking about the competitors and their grand entrance at the opening ceremony. Emma however couldn't concentrate on anything the man was saying, she was too busy trying to figure out who the hell he was. She presumed he was a god of something but she had no idea what he could be the god of. His face was covered in foundation and a strange powdery white substance. Emma eventually gave up on trying to figure out who he was so she opened her mouth to ask Artemis. "Um, Artemis? Who is that god?" She asked timidly. She didn't mean to offend anyone by not knowing who he was.
"Oh that, he's Aeolus, god of the wind." Artemis replied, she didn't seem to care the Emma didn't know who he was.
"And now, what we've all been waiting for, the scores!" Emma's breath caught in her throat, she couldn't breathe. "Emma Willows as the tribute for Artemis. Emma has scored a four from the game makers." The second those words came out of Aeolus' mouth, Emma died a little bit inside.
'A four? A four? What the hell am I meant to do with that! No one will want to sponsor me! I'm screwed!' Emma yelled at herself and quickly glanced around, noticing that her mother was staring at her, looking very disappointed. A surge of shame came over Emma and she had to blink back tears before she finally stood up from the couch she was sitting on and ran from the room.
"Emma, come back!" She heard Artemis call out to her but she ignored her and continued running. She ran down the corridor that lead to her bedroom, but instead of going inside the room, Emma continued running.
Eventually after about five minutes of taking various twists and turns throughout the building, the corridor Emma was in ran into a dead end. Not wanting to go back to her room, Emma strode towards the door that was at the end of the hallway and opened it.
As the door swung open, a breeze of cool air swept at Emma. She shivered slightly and walked further into the room. Emma looked around and saw that she wasn't actually in a room. There was an open wall on the opposite side of her that looked out onto Olympus. Emma sighed and looked at the beautiful sight before her.
Emma slowly began walking over to the edge and looked down at the city bellow. The fall would be eight stories so she probably wouldn't survive. The thoughts of throwing herself off of the building her growing stronger. After all, what did she have to live for? No one would want to sponsor her now that she received a six. She would never see her twin again, and this way Amanda wouldn't have to watch her die in the games.
With that final thought in her mind, Emma jumped down from the ledge, free falling straight to the ground. Emma didn't even let out a scream as she fell through the air. The only thought that was rattling through her mind was 'I'm sorry Amanda.' It was her final thought as her body hit the pavement with a loud crack and she immediately died from the impact.
