Chapter Fifteen: Every Night
Bella's POV
"Oh my god," I whispered in surprise as Carlisle pulled a velvet box from his pocket. Tears started filling in my eyes as everyone at the party gasped as he got down on one knee.
"I wanna live a long and happy life with you Bella, just like my parents." He smiled, opening the box, revealing a ring that looked like it cost more than my old truck. "Will you marry me?" He asked and I just stood there in complete shock. I knew I was going to say yes and I had every intention on saying yes, I just couldn't form words or thoughts in my head.
"Bella?" I heard Edward asked from beside me as he nudged me. I turned to look at him and he looked just surprised as I was. "Hello?"
"Yes," I whispered as my heart rate picked up and tears started spilling out of my eyes. "Of course!" I saw his eyes fill with tears as he gently removed the ring from the box and slipped it onto my finger. He stood up and brought his lips to mine and the place errupted into applause.
"I love you so much." He whispered as he held onto my tightly.
"I love you." I cried as I let go, and brought my hand up closer so I could see it better. "It's beautiful."
"It was my grandmothers." He sighed as he pressed his forehead to mine. "The one who married the spanish breadmaker." He smiled and suddenly, this ring was more special than I knew. "I thought it could be lucky for us."
"You didn't give this to Esme?" I asked, completely ruining the moment.
"No, I bought her her own ring with the money I'd been saving." He laughed. "It wasn't half as grand as this one...so it serves her right."
"Cheers to that." Emmett laughed as he and Rosalie came over to us. Rosalie gushed over the ring as Emmett congratulated Carlisle. "I'm really sorry, man. But, we gotta get home to the twins and Ariana's partied out."
"I understand." Carlisle sighed. I knew how much he missed Emmett which was another reason I was able to feel guilty about him. I stripped him of his job, apartment, the city, and his best friend. I was the best fiancee ever. "We aren't leaving until late tomorrow."
"Yeah, we should have lunch together." I insisted as I turned to Rosalie.
"We should." Carlisle agreed. Please? My treat and you can bring the little ones."
"Lunch sounds great." Rosalie smiled as Ariana got fussier. They said their goodbyes and soon, the party started dying out. and then, it was just the five of us. Edward looked ready to pass out on his grandmothers shoulder and Carlisle had disappeared with Anthony somewhere.
"You know, I was skeptical about you two when I first found out." Helen whispered as she stroked Edward's back. "But, now that I see how happy you make my son...I couldn't be more happy he found you."
"Really?"
"Yeah, really." She smiled. "He was so miserable when him and Esme separated and I never thought I'd see that famous smile again. But, after I saw that you were in it because you had feelings for him and not just because you wanted a good grade in his class, I knew you were it for him."
"I really do love him, and I would never do anything to hurt him." I assured her. "I will never be able to thank him enough for letting me stay in school and risking everything for me. And, I know you and Mr. Cullen must hate me for that, but he did everything for me and I'll always be grateful."
"No, I don't hate you and neither does my husband." She told me, but I had to cock my eyebrows at her. "He doesn't hate you, he just hates what it had to come to." She shrugged. "Anyway, he did what we taught him."
"What was that?"
"To do anything for the person you love." she smiled. "We told him love and relationships were a give and take thing, and sometimes, you had to give a lot for the person you're in love with. And, that's what he did. He put your happiness and well being before his and...it all worked out."
"But, he had a son..."
"Yeah, and I think Edward's happier in Pittsburgh than he was here in New York."
"I am happier in Pittsburgh." Edward spoke up as he lifted his head. "Too many bad memories here."
"See, it really did all work out." She smiled as she wrapped her arms around him. A few minutes later Carlisle, and Anthony came back and we filled the car with everything that didn't get used. "We're going to take Edward back with us, you two go be alone."
"Are you sure mom?" Carlisle asked as he opened the door for me.
"You two just got engaged, go enjoy yourself." She smiled as Edward got in the back of their car. Carlisle and I drove around for a while, but he eventually got on the Kennedy Bridge, leading us into the city. It was all lit up and looking just breathtaking...just like I left it a month ago.
"Where are you taking me?" I asked as he continued to drive. We got into the heart of the city and he pulled over into a parking lot near the Empire State Building. "Carlisle?"
"Come on," He smiled as he took my hand. He pulled me inside and dragged me into an elevated and pressed 86 on the panel. He was taking me up to the top of the most romantic part of the city. When we reached the top, we walked over to the window and my breath caught.
You could see everything from where were standing. From Madison Square Garden to the George Washington Bridge.
"This is...beautiful." I sighed. "But, I thought you had to buy tickets for this?" I asked as I turned to face him.
"I've had these for a while." He admitted. "I was planning on taking you up here for Christmas when you told me it was one of the only things you really wanted to do before you graduated."
"How did I get so lucky?" I asked as I pressed my lips to his. "I can't believe I'm here with you."
"I almost can't either." He smiled as he turned "See there?" He asked, pointing straight ahead. "Well, in that general direction is NYU campus."
"Well, I'm glad we can see somewhere in that direction." I laughed.
"I meant what I said, Bella." He whispered, placing his chin on my shoulder. "I wanna live happily ever after with you."
"And I wanna live happily ever after with Ryan Gossling, but not everyone gets what the want." I laughed and I ended up being tickled to the point where I couldn't breathe for that. "Okay! Uncle!"
"Good, now who do you wanna be with?"
"You, you goofball." I laughed as our eyes locked.
"Are...you ready to get out of here?" He asked as his eyes filled with lust. I nodded and he grabbed my hand and pulled me towards the elevator and down to the car.
"Hey, beautiful." Carlisle whispered in my ear as he stroked my naked back. "We gotta get up to get back home."
"No," I moaned, turning my head to not be facing him.
"I'm gonna tickle you again." He threatened, and that woke me up.
"Fine," I sighed and got up. I pulled the sheet tightly around my body and I heard him whimper. "You're the one who wants to leave."
"Because I have a son and we have to be resposible." He wined as I pulled my panties back on. "If it helps, I would much rather stay here with you."
"It doesn't help." I shook my head. After we were dressed, Carlisle checked us out of the hotel and we headed back to Queens. When we got there though, there was a U-Haul truck out front and Edward was lugging a box outside. "What are you doing, bud?"
"Helping Grandma and Pap." He shrugged as Carlisle helped him get the box into the truck. We went inside and there were boxes everywhere and Helen was running around in a pair of overalls and a bandana on her head. Anthony came down with another box and went outside with Edward.
"Mom, what's going on?" Carlisle asked as he helped her pick up a box of books.
"Packing," She answered.
"Mom!" He sighed and she set the box down.
"We're moving to Pittsburgh, Carlisle." She smiled and his face lit up like a Christmas tree. "I miss my baby and my grand-baby and I wanna be close to you guys again."
"Mom!" He laughed as he hugged her. "Why didn't you tell us?"
"Because we just made the deal with the owner we're buying from." She explained. "We didn't plan on moving this weekend, but we wanna get it over with so we can be close while you plan your wedding."
"This is so awesome!" He exclaimed. "I'm gonna go change and help dad."
Instead of having a peaceful lunch with Emmett and Rosalie, they came over and helped us pack up the house. It took almost five hours to get everything in the truck, but we finally finished, leaving everyone completely drained. I called work and told them I was sick, which probably wasn't a good idea since I'd just started, but I knew I was going to be hurting in the morning.
"Shall I order us a pizza?" Helen asked as we all fell onto the living room floor, exhausted.
"We should get going." Emmett sighed.
"No, sweetie, my mom and sister can take care of the girls." She smiled as she held him down. "Spend some time with Carlisle."
"You're sure?" He asked.
"My mom's fine with it, I just got off the phone with her."
"You're pretty awesome." He smiled as he kissed her. Helen ordered us a pizza and we'd all nearly fallen asleep by the time the pizza guy got there.
It was good to just sit together and talk with everyone. It made me feel apart of Carlisle's life that was more than Edward. His father was talking to me...without giving me dirty looks. Emmett was joking around with me and I could tell all those bad feelings were gone towards me and I felt like I was apart of his life.
I felt this strange twist in my stomach, knowing Carlisle probably wouldn't be apart of mine. My father would never accept us and I would always be afraid he'd chase Carlisle out of the house with his gun. And my mother, she'd always be ashamed of me for dating my professor. She loved me and supported me, but I knew she didn't support me with this.
And then I worried about what I was going to tell them. Would I be straight forward and call tomorrow or wait a while for them to cool down some more. They'd only called twice since my graduation. I wanted them to be happy for me and I wanted my mother to hug me tightly as she cried. I wanted my father to sit sadly in his chair and hold in his tears until I grabbed his hand.
I wanted my parents to be happy at my wedding. I wanted my dad to bite his lip as he walked me down the aisle and I wanted my mother to dance with Carlisle at the reception. But, I knew that wouldn't happen. My father would walk me down the aisle because he felt obligated and my mother would stay far away from Carlisle at the reception.
"Bella?" Carlisle asked me, shaking me out of my daydreaming.
"Huh?"
"You done?" He asked, pointing to my empty paper plate. I handed it to him and went upstairs to the bathroom. I dug my phone out of my pocket and dialed her number, praying she'd answer.
"Hello?" She sang into the phone and I sighed in relief.
"Hey," I whispered.
"Bella!" Alice shrieked. "Oh my gosh! We were just talking about you!"
"Were you?" I asked.
"Yeah," She laughed. "Jasper was telling me pink wouldn't be a good wedding color and I told him how we had that long talk our sophomore year about what colors our weddings would be centered on and I explained to him that it was just a color."
"Did you tell him how I saw the same thing?"
"Well, yeah...but it is a good color!" She wined.
"Hey, it's your wedding." I laughed. "Do what you want."
"Jasper said the same thing." She sighed. "Do you two have the same brain or something?"
"I don't know," I said. "The results aren't in yet."
"So, I know you didn't call to hear me talk about pink napkins." She whispered. "What's up?"
"Well..." I started and she yelled at me to just tell her. "Carlisle proposed last night!"
"NO!" She yelled and then began screaming into the phone. "You did say yes, right?"
"Of course I said yes you weirdo!" I laughed. "Oh my goodness, it was so romantic. We're in New York for his parents fortieth wedding anniversary and they had a party last night for it. Well, he was making his speech as their only son, and he came up to me saying that he wanted to live a long and happy life with me and got down on one knee!"
"Oh, Bella." She gushed. "Very, very smooth."
"Right?" I laughed. "The ring is just...unbelievable."
"I wanna see it!"
"I'll send you a picture later." I promised. "It was his grandmother's ring. He told me the story of his mothers parents and how they met and fell in love while we were in Barcelona sophomore year and it was just the most romantic thing I'd ever heard."
"Why?"
"They met during World War II and she was the daughter of a wealthy, english steel tycoon and he lived in a small house with ten other people. Anyway, when the war was over she took him back to England with him and taught him the language and then they got married. They came over to America in the fifties."
"That is romantic."
"Oh, and the grandfather was from Barcelona which is why this story is...very special to us." I smiled, reliving the day when we sat across from each other and he told me this story. "He told me when he died, she died soon afterwards from a heart attack."
"Heart attack?" She asked. "Oh come on, she died from a broken heart."
"That's what Carlisle told me." I smiled. "I'm scared, Alice."
"Why?" She asked. "You love Carlisle."
"I do...but my parents don't."
"Bella, you have to do what you think is right for you." She sighed. "You have to do what makes you happy, not your parents."
"But, I don't want my parents to hate my husband."
"Look, they're your parents." She sighed. "They're going to be supportive of anything you do and they're still going to love you."
"Easy for you to say." I laughed. "You have the poster boy as a fiancee."
"And you have the older version of that." She reminded me. "Carlisle is your epic love, Bella. Don't let anyone ruin that for you."
"You're right."
"Duh." She sighed. A few seconds later, there was a knock on the door and Carlisle popped his head through the door. "You have to go, don't you?"
"We gotta get on the road." I sighed. "How much longer are you in Texas for?"
"Forever." She sighed. "Jasper got a job offer here and it's the best one he's gotten." She explained. "I can't tell him to give it up because I wanna be closer to home."
"You're a good fiancee, Alice."
"Plus, his family offered to help us get on our feet." She told me. "My parents are happy for us and they love Jasper, but they told us we were on our own once we got married and they wouldn't be there to bail us out of trouble...they said once your married it's you and your husband. Not you and your parents."
"Sounds about right."
"I love you, Bells."
"I love you too, Alice." I said and hung up the phone. I turned to Carlisle and couldn't help it when a tear streamed down my cheek. He pulled me into a tight hug and just held me. I loved being with Carlisle, but I missed Alice so much. She was my rock for three years and now, she's a million miles away.
The drive back to Pittsburgh was long and it didn't help than once we got home, we had to get the guest room ready for his parents. But, I was happy they were here because I know how much Carlisle missed them, and their help. But, once they were in their room, Carlisle and I went back to ours and fell asleep immediately.
We woke up a lot later than normal, and when we got up the smell of bacon was hard to miss. When we were dressed, we headed downstairs to find his mother cooking breakfast and his father reading the paper at the kitchen island.
"I'm getting a weird sense of deja-vu back to childhood." He laughed as he sat down next to his father. His mother dished our portions for all of us, even Edward who wouldn't be awake for at least an hour.
"So, when you get to move in?" I asked as Edward padded into the kitchen. "Good morning sleeping beauty.
"Yeah, yeah." He yawned as Helen warmed up his food in the microwave. "It's like old times, dad."
"It sure is, buddy." He smiled. "But, Bella did have a good question."
"We can move in Friday." Anthony answered. "So, clear you schedule."
"Oh, yeah about that." He sighed, scratching the back of his neck. "I don't wanna."
"Too bad." Helen laughed as she hit him in the back of the head. Edward started talking about playing soccer with Anthony and Carlisle talked to his mom about a good place to buy paint when they started decorating. As I looked around and listened, I got even more excited to marry Carlisle.
This was my family now. And I was loving every second of it.
