Chapter 22
Dyson stood there stunned as they soared across the pavement, rolling and banging hard into the ground. He looked up quickly to see Kenzi behind the wheel of the SUV. Her eyes were wide and she looked awfully crazy.
"GET IN!" she yelled. Dyson grabbed Hale by his arm and they ran to the vehicle. Kenzi popped open her door.
"What are you doing, stay behind the wheel." Dyson said as he opened the back door.
"I…can't." she mumbled the words and then her body went limp. She fell from the driver's seat rapidly. Like a bag of bricks being dropped from the roof. Dyson caught her and pulled her upright.
"Hale! Drive!" Dyson yelled. Hale quickly got in the driver's seat. They didn't have time to waste. Dyson lifted Kenzi as carefully as he could in their circumstances. He slid her onto the backseat and he climbed in, placing her head gently in his lap.
"What's wrong?" Trick asked. He turned in the front seat and faced them.
"I don't know." Dyson quickly checked her pulse, it was slow, which worried him.
"Pulse is slow." He commented.
"Lauren." Kenzi whispered the name. It was a word on her breath as it came out of her slightly parted lips. Kenzi's head turned to the side and she moaned softly.
"Kenzi." Dyson said her name and ran a hand over her head and down her hair. A few tears escaped her closed eyes and rolled out of the corners, falling lightly on his pants and into her hair.
"It's ok." He whispered to her. He tried to give her some comfort for whatever she was feeling.
"Nevada." She whispered and turned her head to the side rapidly, her breathing started to become erratic and Dyson felt her pulse quicken significantly.
"Kenzi calm down. Focus." Trick said urgently.
"Bake." She mumbled and her hands jerked upward, her small fingers wrapped around Dyson's arm where it was resting on her chest, trying to make sure she didn't leap upward. Her nails dug hard into Dyson's arm and more tears fell from her eyes. Dyson tried to rub her hair some more, tried to relax her. But her breathing was not slowing and her heart was only beating faster.
"Kenzi relax, please calm down." Dyson begged with her. She was not ok and his own heart was pounding in fear.
"Bakersville, Nevada. Lauren." The words left her mouth in a rush and then she stopped moving. Her hands released Dyson's arm and fell limp. Her head lolled to the side and Dyson quickly returned his fingers to her neck to check her pulse. It had declined drastically and her erratic breathing was no more.
"I have no clue what that is supposed to mean." Hale said.
"My best guess is that Lauren is in Bakersville Nevada." Trick said.
"Did you call Bo?" Dyson asked.
"Working on that now." Trick said. Dyson looked down as Kenzi shifted in his lap. Her eyes were moving underneath her lids. He watched her intently until her eyes opened just a little. She looked up at him, her big blue eyes searching his.
"Are you ok?" he asked softly.
"I'm so tired." She whispered. He could barely hear her.
"Then sleep." He replied.
"I can't. Lauren is in Bakersville Nevada. She's so sad Dyson. She wants to come home."
"Then how about we go and get her." He gently stroked Kenzi's hair back from her face and smiled down at her. She looked so scared. Dyson could see the fear in her eyes and he hated it, because he knew there was fear in his eyes as well. He wanted to tell her it would all be ok, he wanted to comfort her in some way, but he didn't know how. He didn't want to lie to her and tell her everything was ok when it was not. Dyson let his eyes drop to the black lines that were running over her body and he noticed they'd moved past the lines he had drawn. Only by a few millimeters, but they'd still moved.
"We're coming up on Bo and Tamsin right now." Hale called into the backseat. Dyson looked up and saw Tamsin and Bo standing at the end of an alley. Hale slid to a halt, the brakes whining in resistance. The door unlocked and Tamsin jerked it open. Bo looked into the vehicle and her face changed from one of seriousness to one of concern. She climbed into the third seat, Tamsin right behind her and then they both leaned over the seat.
"What's wrong with her?" Bo asked looking over Kenzi slowly.
"She passed out and -"
"That's not important. I know where Lauren is." Kenzi said, abruptly cutting Dyson off. He frowned at her. Why wouldn't she let herself be the center of attention for just a few minutes. Dyson was becoming frustrated. He was worried about everyone. But she was the only thing that occupied his mind constantly. He was terrified he was going to lose her, and that was something he just did not want to even consider at this point.
"Hale told me. Now what's wrong with you?" Bo quickly directed Kenzi back on subject. Dyson smiled and Kenzi frowned.
"I'm fine BoBo, just tired." Kenzi said.
"Then rest." Bo said. She reached down and stroked Kenzi's hair back away from her face. The two shared a loving look and Dyson was thankful Bo was here. Kenzi needed Bo. Dyson could only do so much, but Bo was her best friend. She loved Bo, the two were sister and they comforted each other.
"What happened at the Dal?" Tamsin asked.
"Aros sent Ceros' to attack us. They would've ripped the Dal apart had we not left."
"I ran them over." Kenzi said. Dyson chuckled and nodded.
"Yep, she did."
"Badass." Tamsin said.
"So they're dead?" Bo asked.
"Most likely. Ceros are strong, but easily killed. They don't have the rapid healing like most Fae do. So if they suffer internal injuries, they die."
"By the way, can we just let everyone know that Dyson doesn't know what X-men are."
"I don't know what they are either." Trick said.
"Me neither." Tamsin shrugged.
"Never heard of them." Bo chuckled.
"Are you kidding me? What is with you Fae and your inability to watch a good movie?"
"Don't worry Kenz, I know what you're talking about." Hale smiled in the rearview mirror at her.
"Thank God!" she shouted. They all laughed with each other, it felt good, and it felt right. But they were all still aware that one part of their team was missing.
"Where to?" Hale asked.
"Let's go get Lauren." Kenzi said.
