Chapter 38
Azriel walked back into the room, she was shaking her head slowly, but then she clasped her hands in front of her and looked straight forward.
"I apologize for my brother's behavior. He's um…heartbroken." She seemed to not really know what that word meant.
"I don't care." Dyson said. He was still sitting on the bed in front of Kenzi. Her small hand was inside his and everyone could tell that the chi Kenzi had was fading.
"If you only understood his situation. Sphinxes only love one person for their entire lives. Much like wolves." Azriel said. Dyson looked up and frowned at her.
"I'll spare you the long version, but Valac and Leila met long ago when we were just small children. They fell in love with one another. When Leila disappeared Valac was devastated, he fell into a horrible depression and has never been the same. When we received word that Leila was alive and here, he was the happiest I'd ever seen him, but then he realized that he couldn't just pull Leila out of you, mostly because he saw how much the wolf loved you and he recognized that love. The same love he feels for Leila. So we had to find another option, and we did. But it's not a good one. We searched books and contacted friends, and we only found one way to remove Leila."
"That's good though right? We both get what we want." Hale said.
"Except for the fact that it puts both in a lot of danger. The way the transfer works is that Leila pulls all of her energy from Kenzi in order to move into her old body, all of her energy fills up her old body quickly and gives it life once again, but once that happens all of Kenzi's energy returns to her full force. The reason the transfer is danger is because a body, human, nor Fae is made to receive that much energy at once. The energy has to sort itself out quickly, if it's stuck in one place for too long then it injuries the inside of the body and kills the occupant."
"So what you're saying is that if the energy decides to hang out for a bit then I don't make it through this?" Kenzi asked. Dyson squeezed her hand, he probably didn't feel too comfortable with her talking that way.
"More or less." Azriel said.
"More or less?" Bo asked loudly.
"You asked us to find a solution, so we did."
"There's got to be another way." Dyson said.
"We searched everywhere, there is no other way. This is the only option." Azriel said.
"No, no." Dyson was shaking his head.
"Don't you think that if there were another option that was safer we would do that one? What you all don't seem to be understanding is that you're not the only ones who might be losing a loved one here. Leila is at risk just like Kenzi is. Doing this puts them both at risk and the same way you love your girl, wolf, my brother loves his. The way you consider her your sister, I consider Leila mine. My brother wanted to speak with her because he wanted to say his goodbyes just in case he never sees her again. But since he does not have that opportunity, I suggest you not take yours for granted and make your peace. We will be back with Leila's remains in twenty minutes. That should give you all plenty of time." Azriel spun on her heel and stomped out of the room. The room was silent for a few moments before Kenzi spoke up.
"Tamsin, will you go and get Valac?"
"Why?" Dyson asked quickly. Kenzi looked into Dyson's wondering eyes and she sighed.
"Are you going to say goodbye to me before the transfer?" she asked.
"I don't want to say goodbye, but if I don't I'll regret it."
"So if you get to say goodbye to me don't you think he deserves to say goodbye to the woman he loves?" Kenzi asked. Dyson ground his teeth, but deep down he knew she was right. He no longer put up a fight and he stood up when he saw Tamsin approaching the door with Valac.
"Can we have the room guys?" she asked. Everyone nodded but Dyson and Bo stopped next to Valac before walking out the door. Dyson met Valac's eyes and narrowed his gaze.
"If you hurt her in any way, I'll kill you." Dyson said. Bo was behind him, backing him up and Valac knew they meant business. Her friends filtered out, leaving her and Valac alone.
Dyson stood out in the hallway, pacing back and forth nervously. He was listening intently, not to the conversation, but for any sounds of pain or a struggle. After only a few minutes, Valac exited the room and nodded to Tamsin.
"She wants to see you." Tamsin looked confused but went into the room. One by one each friend entered the room and came back out. Tamsin, Trick, Hale, all walked in, and after a few minutes they came back out. None of them looked happy, each carried a somber expression as they came out.
"Your turn." Hale nodded to Bo. Bo walked quickly into the room where Kenzi was sitting on the bed, her legs crossed.
"Hey." Bo said softly.
"Come on, sit." Kenzi patted the bed. Bo sat down in front of her and looked into her friend's bright blue eyes. She'd already lost her once today, she wasn't planning on losing her again.
"Look, I don't want to get all mushy and teary eyed, but I want you to know that I love you BoBo. Before you, I'd never been really close to anyone, I'd never cared for anyone but myself. You definitely changed that. I trust you, and I've never trusted anyone in my life, you're one of the most important people in my life and without you, I would've never experienced half of the badass things that I have. I need you to promise me something ok?" Kenzi asked. Bo's eyes were full of tears but she didn't dare let them fall. She wasn't losing Kenzi.
"Anything." She said.
"Promise me you'll won't blame yourself, and swear to me that won't let this stop you from living."
"I swear." Bo lied.
"Ok, go get Dyson." Kenzi nodded. She hugged Bo and squeezed her tightly before Bo hurried out. Dyson walked in as soon as Bo exited and he came straight to the bed. He sat down and Kenzi could already see the tears in his eyes.
"Are you ok?" Kenzi asked. She knew his injuries were still healing. He scoffed and took her face in his hands. She loved when he did that.
"Not a single thing that is wrong with me matters right now." he whispered and then kissed her gently. Kenzi brought her hands up and put them on his forearms, squeezing him gently.
"I need you to know something." She said against his lips. He pressed his forehead against hers and shook his head.
"No, we're not talking about that. You're going to be fine, understand?" Kenzi had her eyes closed and she nodded against his forehead.
"I'll be right beside you, the whole time." He said. Kenzi smiled and took a deep shaky breath. Dyson lifted her head up and their lips met again, he kissed her hard and slow and when he pulled back, he looked deep into her eyes.
"I love you so very much." He said.
