Kim was halfway over the ledge and she froze. Shego wished she didn't exist….?
The green skinned woman finally noticed the movement out of the corner of her eye, berating herself for having lowered her awareness, even if it was due to her head injury. She turned, ready to light her plasma, when her eyes met the redhead's.
Both women stared at each other for a moment before Shego asked with a slightly shaky voice, "Kim…?"
The hero quickly composed herself and pulled herself up, helping the other three before she turned back to Shego. "Are you two alright? We saw the crash, and Fitz's grave, and there was a lot of blood." Even if she seemed fine, she was still shaken, and it showed in her voice.
"I'm fine, just a slight bump on the head. Coulder has a bit more of a problem than I do. He has two broken legs. I set them as straight as I could and used some wood to make splints, but he needs a lot more help than I can give if he's to ever walk again."
Betty nodded her head, "We'll get you two back to base and get you guys a checkup. I'll send another party back for Fitz."
Shego grit her teeth and nodded her head. She hated that she couldn't get the three of them out of there alive, but Fitz had died on impact. There was no chance of saving him.
First Will and Maria climbed down, waiting for the others to lower Coulder down. Once he was down, the rest slowly lowered themselves and then they set off for the helicopter, staying aware of their surroundings to be sure there were no hostiles in the area.
Shego left the doctor's office with the results she expected. She was already healing up nicely and would be completely fine in a day or two. She was heading home to get a good night's sleep when Betty stopped her.
"What's up?" the green skinned woman asked, following the brunette to her office.
As soon as the doors closed Betty's shoulders slumped and she unceremoniously sat down in her chair with a heavy sigh. "I'm glad you're alive and all, and I know you have always hated GJ, but what's with the whole wishing Kimberly didn't exist thing? She left for home in an extremely depressed mood, and here I was hoping after we found you she'd be her chipper self again."
"So you guys did hear that…"
"Loud and clear."
"It's not that I hate Kimmy…. It's just… I hate what she is to me."
Betty raised an eyebrow.
"You know I have family problems and stuff and that's what caused me to hate myself and a lot of people that I meet."
"Yeah. I'm one of the few people you don't hate, if I remember correctly."
Shego smiled slightly, "Yeah. I still like you."
"With the way you act towards me, and how you act towards Kimberly, I figured you liked her as well, maybe even more than me. You say you pick her for demonstrations because she's the best in the class, but if I remember correctly, you actually liked to pick on the weakest to goad them into improving. Not only that, but you wanted to follow her on this mission. Even if I hadn't offered incentive you would've gone."
"Then why did you offer if you knew I would go anyways?" Shego asked with a quirked eyebrow.
"Because I knew you'd be going into a dangerous situation one way or another. I figured I should compensate you accordingly. You love her, and since I'd like you continue to like me, I wanted to make it worth the effort."
"Well, I do like her, but I can't compare the two of you, considering I like you two in different ways."
"You DO have a thing for her. I had assumed as much, but with you I'm never quite sure. Thanks for the confirmation."
"Yeah, I like her," Shego sighed, "but that's also why I hate her. I think I've fallen in love with her, but falling in love means giving her the power to crush me. I loved my family, and look what that did to me. I'm a wreck. Nothing in my life is actually stable. Well, the only stable thing is instability, I guess." Shego frowned and finally took a seat across from Betty, slumping in the chair.
"So basically," Betty sat up a little, "you're in love with her, just like she is with you, and because of that, you hate her even though you don't actually hate her."
Shego snorted, "Yeah, basically."
"I assume this also means you know she likes you?"
"I've known for a while now. I've tried to skirt around it as much as possible. If we don't broach that part of our relationship, we might survive a while longer as friends. That's why I treat her as normally as possible."
Betty sighed, "Well, you need to figure out a way to clear up the misunderstanding with her then, though it will be hard if you try to clear it up without mentioning the whole you loving her part."
Shego groaned and stood up, "I know, I know. I'll figure out what to do later. Am I allowed to leave now? Get some sleep maybe?"
"Yeah, go on home, take the weekend off. Yes ma'am."
"But bring me some dinner tomorrow."
"Alright, alright."
"And check up on Coulder."
Shego rolled her eyes as she opened the door, "Anything else, milady?"
Betty paused for a moment and Shego was just about to close the door as she said, "I'm glad you're back."
Shego smiled slightly, "See you tomorrow."
Shego walked into the hospital yawning. Even though she'd gotten a full night's rest she was still exhausted. She figured she'd sleep all day the next day.
After asking for Coulder's room number she was directed to Room 339.
She entered to find a little girl asleep in a chair next to the bed Coulder was on.
"She's adorable," Shego said quietly.
Coulder looked up and grinned.
"Where's your wife?"
"She went to get a change of clothes for Emily."
"Emily, huh? Cute name for a cute kid."
"You know, if we hadn't been stranded in a cave for a week together, I might have believed you were being sarcastic."
She rolled her eyes before a small smile lit up her face. "I see you kept your promise to me."
"Well, the hug part, yeah. I'm going to do my best to hold up the rest of the promise though."
"Good."
"And what about you?" he asked, cocking his head to the side, "Have you done what you promised me?"
She sighed, "It's not that easy for me."
"You don't want it to be too late."
"I don't, but I also need it to be the right time."
"This isn't the right time? I mean, you just came back from being possibly dead. The person you love must be ecstatic."
Shego smiled ruefully, "That's assuming they liked me to begin with."
"They don't?"
"Oh no, she does love me."
He furrowed his brow, "Well, if she loves you, why haven't you told her you love her…?"
"I told you, I'm pretty messed up… Also, she heard what I said."
"Heard what you said…?"
"She heard that I wished she didn't exist."
It took Coulder a moment to understand what she'd just said and his eyes slowly widened. "You mean…. Kim Possible? You're in love with her? Wait… and she loves you back?"
"Yeah."
"When the hell did you fall in love with your ex-enemy…? Wait, did you like her when you guys were on opposite sides?"
"No, I don't think so. I think the first time I started to see her that way was after the Lorwardian invasion when we'd spar. When you're in such close proximity to a person for over an hour every day, it's impossible for you to NOT think about them."
"And you're sure she loves you back?"
Shego scratched the back of her head, "At first I thought I was just imagining it, but after talking with Betty yesterday… she kind of confirmed my suspicions."
"I see… and she heard you say you wished she didn't exist."
"Pretty much."
"That's definitely complicated," he frowned.
"It's more complicated when you realize that I don't want to love someone and I don't want to be loved back."
"What? Why don't you want to love or be loved?" It was hard for him to grasp it. Love was something he had everywhere in his life. He had a wife and he had a kid.
"Because when I loved my family I was only betrayed. I don't want to give someone the power to do that to me again. I spiraled into becoming a villain because of my family and my shattered love for them. I really don't want to know what would happen if the same thing happened with Kimmy."
Coulder frowned, "Sorry. I wish I could help, but, I don't think I'd ever be able to understand."
She smiled sadly, "It's alright, I don't want you to understand."
They sat in silence for a while before Coulder managed to change the topic.
"So how's Princess Maria? And what's going to happen with her?"
"She's going to stay in protective custody for a while longer before she can return to her country. When she goes home she'll have some GJ agents protecting her for a few months until she can acquire a decent guard of her own. She'll be fine."
"You taught her pretty well. I was surprised she could scale the cliff we were on."
"She's a tough princess. Always been active since she was a kid, or so I hear, so I just put that energy to use when I was teaching her. She can hold her own pretty well, but she still needs guards. She's not even to your level yet, so there's no way she could hold her own against several attackers at once. Maybe one or two, which is pretty damn good in itself, but she'll need protection."
"I'm glad she's alright."
"Yeah, me too."
Their conversation was interrupted when Coulder's wife returned. Shego gave a curt hello, let the woman know she was the commanding officer, received a hug, which threw her off, and then she was on her way.
With a sigh she headed home, her mind slowly going back to the redhead. She was going to have to figure out what to say to the girl, and she knew it wasn't going to be easy.
