'Ready?' Alec asked warily as we stood at one end of the clearing where we were going to be fighting the newborns.
It was now September and the guard had been training for months. All of us were dressed in black, even the Cullens who had decided to fight with us. My father, Uncle Marcus and Caius stood in front with me stood behind them. Alec was stood slightly in view to their right and Jane the same on their left, there was no one between Alec and I but between me and Jane there were the Cullen girls with the exception of Esme who was stood near my uncle. The guard and the rest of the Cullens fanned our around us.
'No,' I answered honestly: I had always hated fighting and right now I was petrified of losing Alec, Jane or another member of my family in this battle making everything a thousand time worse.. 'But that doesn't really matter.'
Alec reached across and squeezed my hand comfortingly at the same time Jasper, no doubt sensing the turmoil of emotions, sent me a wave of calm. The two calming things given at once managed only to dim my panic but wasn't enough to remove it completely.
The other side came slowly and I gaped at how many of them there were. They made us, for the first time ever, look small. I pushed my shield out around out side as they entered in case anyone had any mental gifts. There was no way Victoria and the Romanians could make so many and keep them under control. There must have been around 90 of them without including Victoria and the Romanians - so 93 - but there were only 38 of us. That was a 55 people differences which was scary
Of course, being the innocent little wife that I am, I completely forgot around Alec's gift which went wafting towards them as soon as they began to step out. The guard began running towards them before Alec's mist got to them since it was a slow travelling and I watched scared as Alec and Jane left my side as well. The Cullen's were instructed to stay with us - us meaning my father, me and my two uncles - unless we began fighting. It was terrifying watching my husband fight and not being able to help him and my aunt moved to take my hand comfortingly.
Soon Alec's gift began to take effect and the guard began quickly eliminating their numbers. I glanced around a saw a young female vampires stalking around the edge of the clearing and, as she leaped for my father who had his eyes completely on the battle in front of her, I pounced as well knocking her over and making us tumble into the trees but as I crouched down really for her to attack again I caught sight of her face - she was just as scared as I was.
'Wait. Please,' she cried as another male vampire run into the trees. 'I don't want to fight.'
'Everything's fine!' I called back to my family to make sure they didn't come running and stared at the girl calculatingly since she had just attacked her father. 'What was that then?'
'Elizabeth, don't trust her,' the new vampire advised her glaring at me.
'I have no wish to harm you, either you,' I implored to them. 'Talk to me.'
'No!' the male one shouted but Elizabeth spoke over him, 'we didn't know what we were doing … we were never told.'
I thought quickly wondering the best course of action,' will you surrender to me, to my family? If you do, you won't be harmed - I promise.'
'Why should we trust you?' the male spoke civilly for the first time and from his face I could see that he actually considering it.
'Because, right now, who else can you trust?' I asked them as Alec burst into the trees, no doubt having seen me roll into there. He crouched down at the sight of the two vampire's beside me. 'No, Alec!'
'What's going on?' he asked warily, not taking his eyes of Elizabeth and her friend.
'They surrendered,' I answered him though they hadn't actually agreed to it.
'Izzy,' Alec turned his gaze to me, 'we cant -'
'-kill them in cold blood,' I finished for him though I knew perfectly well that was not what he was going to say. 'I forbid it.
I stepped in front of Elizabeth and her friend to prove my point and caught Alec eyes flicker warily behind me. Never turn your back on your enemy, that was what I had always been taught, what Alec had always been taught, my back to them scared him because it made me an easy target. I think he saw that I wasn't budging on this one and let a heavy sigh out.
'Fine,' he reluctantly said and I beamed up at me, ' but let's get Jasper to watch them, you know nothing about newborn vampires.'
I smiled and stepped towards him placing a kiss on his cheek
'I love you for this,' I told him, wrapping my arms around him. 'Elizabeth and - oh sorry what's your name?
'Will,' the male vampire answered.
'Follow me,' I said and led them back into the clearing where everyone else was still fighting.
Alec kissed my cheek and disappeared back into the fight since his mist had now completely gone, leaving me to make the rest of the way back to family alone. My father turned at the sound of my footsteps and from his gaze I knew that I was going to have repeat of what I had just said. Two things happened when I was done explaining: the battle finished and Jane screamed.
We had won but that wasn't what I was thinking about: no where around the field could Alec be seen. I glanced around in panic and all the guard did as well. He wasn't dead I knew that without even looking, knowing I would have felt it, but I couldn't see him. Jane ran to my side and I grasped her hand, still glancing around in my panic state.
'Alec!' I called in, feeling vampire tears well up in my eyes. 'Alec!'
My screams started everyone's up as the guard split up yelling his name. Jane and I stuck together as we joined them, our hands joined together as though if we let go the other would disappear as well.
'Demetri,' I cried when I got closer to him, stumbling into his arms. 'Where is he?'
He hugged me tightly, 'I'm trying.'
I bounced on my toes slightly in irritation before turning to Jane.
'Where was he?'
'Right next to me!' she said panic and I could see venom in her own eyes. 'I turned around and then when I turned back he was gone.'
