He's my son

Chapter 18

Sam remained in the hospital for another month before he was finally announced that his cancer was in remission. Sam wasn't sure how it had happened, wasn't sure if the demon had been caught and exorcised, all he knew was that he was glad to be out of the hospital. he would still have to take pills for a long time and still come in for regular check up's but it looked like Sam was finally getting a break from the cancer.

"Come on, Sammy" Dean said as he pushed Sam in his wheelchair out to the waiting impala. "Let's get out of this joint."

"I've never been more ready to leave the hospital behind" Sam said, grinning though he was still tired from the effects of the chemo. He would gladly take months of being tired if it meant he didn't have to spend another day in the hospital.

"I bet" Dean said as they reached the car, John was already waiting with the doors open. Sam grinned tired at him, and allowed John to help him into the backseat so that he could lay down.

Once Sam was resting comfortably in the back seat, John slammed the door shut. Turning to face Dean, he turned serious.

"I have a good idea of where the demon is, I'm taking Bobby, Jim and Caleb with ne to go after it. I want you to stay with Sam and keep an eye on him." John shook his head when Dean started to protest.

"He needs you right now, he can't protect himself." Dean scowled at John; leave it to his father to play on his willingness to protect Sam. Dean nodded; Sam was the most important thing that mattered right now. he didn't want the shadow of cancer hanging over Sam's head, so he would let his father deal with the threat and he would protect his little brother.

"Do you even know who it is?" Dean asked wondered when his father would have had the time to research the demon side of Sam's cancer.

"I have a pretty good idea who it is" John said "but I'm not saying anything until after it's been dealt with."

"Will that make the cancer go away?" Dean hoped so, he couldn't stand watching Sam suffer after every treatment that he went through. He didn't think he could sit by and watch it happen anymore, not without his breaking even more than it already was.

"I don't know" John replied "I hope so, but I haven't found any sure answer, neither has Bobby or Jim." Dean frowned, he hoped it would take away the cancer, but he was starting to get a bad feeling about the whole situation. He wondered if it had truly been caused by a demon at all. After, no signs of demonic activity had been found so far. He sighed; he hoped this all would be over soon. He was so tired of seeing Sam sick and weak all the time. He was a shadow of his former self, and Dean couldn't stand it. The weakened, extremely thin body wasn't the Sam that he knew and it hurt looking at him. He wished he could take Sam's place, he probably deserved to more than Sam did.

Sighing, Dean climbed into the passenger seat of the car, and slammed the door behind him. He looked over his shoulder to find Sam already sleeping soundly in the backseat. He smiled at the peace he seen on his face. Sam hadn't really slept all that well since he'd entered the hospital, it was nice to see him get some rest now, considering his fight wasn't quite over yet.

Dean was determined nothing else would get past him to hurt Sam; the kid had been through enough. if that demon came after him, Dean would send him right back to hell where he came from, he didn't care what it took. Sam wouldn't suffer any more than he had too. He had to concentrate on beating the cancer before Dean allowed him to even consider thinking about demons and other supernatural critters again.

"I can practically here you thinking over here" John commented "you don't have to worry, the demon won't get anywhere near the house, it's about as demon proofed as you can get anywhere near that house." from the tone of John's voice, Dean didn't doubt him. He just hoped that John and the other hunters returned from the fight. He had done his research he knew what they were going up against and just how powerful it truly was. He wanted to go with his father, but he knew John was right. Sam needed protecting, and not because he was weak from his battle with cancer either, he was still young and didn't have what it took to go up against something like the demon they were facing.

"I can't help but worry" Dean said "I keeping thinking about the demon and then the deal with the cancer and how because of the chemo, any kind of germ could kill him. how are we going to be able to keep the place clean enough to keep him alive?" Dean's questions raced out conveying how truly worried he was. John understood his concerns because quite frankly he felt the same ones but he knew they would do all that they possibly could to keep Sam with them. Neither Winchester was willing to let Sam go without a fight. A fight they might truly have to fight, but John was willing to do whatever it took to make sure his baby was safe. Even if it sacrificing himself, he would do it.

Pulling out onto the highway, John sped towards the small house he had rented for the time being. He didn't want to risk taking Sam out on the road again and then have him relapse with no way to start treatment again. He wasn't going to offer his son an instant death sentence.

Pulling into the drive, he put the car in park, and waited for Dean to get Sam out before tossing Dean the key to the house.

"I hate to just drop you guys off and run, but I really need to get on the road to getting that demon taking care of." John said, watching as Sam slept on, cradled in Dean's arms.

"I'm going to make this right" John said "I won't stand for watching Sammy suffer anymore."

Sorry it took me forever to update, I've been writing a book which thankfully is now finished until my next project starts. I want to try and get caught up on as many fanfics as possible. Thanks for being patient. Liz
