Airi opened the front door slowly and slipped out. She was glad that she wore her combat boots instead of her new ones that squeaked. The soft leather was worn down and soft making her silent. She circled the building hugging the walls. The weight of the utility belt around her waist was heavy and her hands were sweating inside the elbow length gloves she had found. She neared about her corner and a ball exploded on a tree near her covering it in gel. She peaked around and saw her friends in the distance running and ducking through Fred's garden. There was a figure in a long trench coat flaying back and forth on a board a few feet of the ground. The blasts from his hands were keeping the team from getting close, but they were pushing them back. Airi backed up and dug through the pockets of the belt. After finding nothing of use she inspected the gloves and pressed the buttons on the edge. One of them made the palms spark up and she quickly changed the setting. This one didn't seem to do anything. Another one of honeys balls exploded near her and she jumped putting her hand against the wall. It stuck. She pulled hard but it wouldn't come off. She pressed each finger individually to see if that did something and when she got to the index it released. She could hear the commotion coming closer and knew she had to work quickly. She placed her arms high on the wall and crawled her way up so that she was a couple feet off the ground. She applied pressure to her left index finger and the glove relaxed allowing her to reach higher where it stuck. She repeated this action until she reached a small ledge she perched herself on. She scooted to the corner and saw that the attacker was only a few feet away. Taking a deep breath she pressed the lightning bolt button on the gloves and waited until the guy was right below her.
"Ahhh!" She yelled as she pushed herself of hands out stretched. His masked face looked up a second before she touched him causing him to convulse. Airi fell to the floor and stood up quickly to see the guy laid out on the floor. She panicked a little thinking she might have killed him, but he groaned softly and she relaxed. GoGo zoomed around the corner first and almost hit Airi with her disk.
"Airi!" She yelled stopping short. The others quickly caught up in modified versions of their costumes. Hiro arrived last and Airi gasped. He had a cut in his shirt and his arm was bleeding. Airi turned the gloves off and ran towards him.
"Oh my god! Are you ok?!"
His eyes were wide as he stared at her and she quickly realized that they were all staring at her.
"What?" She looked down at her self and figured that she did look pretty weird. She was still wearing her outfit but had pushed up her sleeves and Hiro's jacket for the gloves, the belt was a little too big for her waist so it sat low on her hips, and her quickly put up hair probably looked ridiculous.
"Oh...well Hiro looked a little spooked and I didn't want to just sit in there with Heathecliffe while you guys were out here." She explained.
They all were still staring at her when Fred broke the silence.
"We are definitely keeping her."
Hiro broke his trance and pointed to the guy.
"Honey. Trap that guy. And someone call the cops."
He said it while his eyes kept flickering back and forth between the unconscious attacker and Airi. She was standing there looking awkward. The gloves had been taken off and they were hanging out of the arms of his jacket that had slid past her fingers. She pulled a stray curl behind her ear and rocked back on her heels. Their eyes met and Hiro's hand shot out to grab her covered wrist. He pulled her around the corner of the building and before she had time to ask what was going in he had pressed her back against the wall and was kissing her deeply. Her mouth was already open from trying to talk so his tongue easily slipped in and tangled with hers. It was a little messy, but still really good. He pressed closer to her and her hands slowly travelled up his arm. She accidentally brushed the cut on his bicep and Hiro pulled back hissing.
"Oh. Sorry." She said with worry in her eyes. Hiro couldn't really think straight when there was still a string of saliva connecting their mouths.
"S'ok." He said moving his arm around.
"No it's not. I ruined the moment." Her pout made him laugh and lean his forehead against hers.
"You're amazing." He said. Airi looked down and pressed her hands against the wall behind her.
"It wasn't that big a deal. Anyone could have done it." Her voice was quiet and soft when she said it and Hiro couldn't tell if it was from humility or self doubt. He leaned down a little and kissed her again making a loud noise when they separated.
"C'mon. Let's go inside. It's cold out here and my arm kinda hurts."
Her demeanor changed as she remembered that he was injured. The crease between her brows stayed there until they were inside and she had finished tending to his wound.
"I took a first aid class a couple years ago." She said as she opened the kit Heathecliffe brought her. "I teach the babies at my studio during the summer so I wanted to know just in case. I'm also certified in CPR."
The alcohol stung, but at least it got rid of his blush that had been there since he had to take off his shirt. She quickly finished bandaging the cut on his shoulder blade and he slipped on a shirt Fred had brought him.
"Good as new." She said snapping the first aid box shut. The look of self satisfaction on her face made him want to kiss her again but the others came in to tell them the guy had been taken by the cops.
"He's gone." GoGo said. "We still have no idea who he is. Don't recognize him."
"Wierd." Hiro said. "Maybe the cops will be able to-" he was cut off when Airi's phone started ringing. She grimaced when she put it to her ear and listened to the person on the other side of the line.
"Sorry...I know...right away...it won't happen again."
When she hung up she groaned.
"My dad's gonna kill me." She said. "Hiro can you take me home now please?"
"Yeah of course." He said standing up. They said bye to the others and in a few minutes they were back on the road. They went back a different way that they came making the trip much shorter. It was much calmer than the ride to Fred's. Airi just sat quietly her head resting on his uninjured shoulder. He was grateful that her whole front was pressed against his back because it was cold and she still had his jacket. He didn't realize how much she was actually warning him up until she quickly sat up when they got to her street.
"What?" She whispered. She stood up on the footrests and leaned over Hiro. "Is that?"
There were two vehicles outside of her house and while he knew that one of them belonged to her dad, Hiro had no idea who owned the other one. When they got to the driveway Airi practically jumped of the moped to run to the front door. She struggled with her keys but finally the front door flew open and a she disappeared inside. Hiro didn't really know what to do. He figured he should leave, but she was still wearing his spare helmet. After a couple moments he decided that he would just get it later. He revved up only for Airi's dad to step out of the house.
"Hiro!" He yelled. He crossed his big arms and nodded to the inside of the house before going back inside. He left the door open and Hiro knew that he was meant to follow him. He parked next to Airi's bike and walked up to the front door. When he stepped in it was loud and he could hear commotion coming from the next room. He peaked around the corner and his eyes widened. Airi was in a woman's arms with tears running down her face. The women had dark skin and big curly hair held back by a scarf. There was a little boy and girl sitting by her sides carefully rubbing Airi's back. They were to caught up in each other to notice Hiro but there was another woman sitting on the side looking at him. She was lighter than the woman but still darker than Airi.
"¿Quien eres tú? She said. Her eyes narrowing. Airi's eyes might look like her dads but the power behind that glare was identical.
"Uh."
Airi looked up wiping her eyes and smiled when she saw him.
"Él es mi novio." She said to the woman whose eyebrows rose. "Hiro this is my cousin Carmen." She said pointing to the woman still glaring at him. "And these are my siblings Adriana and Anthony. And this is my mama." She squoze her moms hand and looked at Hiro who was floored. He had no idea that she had siblings. And why was she crying.
"N-nice to meet you." He stuttered looking around at them. Carmen was still glaring at him while the kids, who looked like twins, looked at him cautiously. Airi's mother however had a warm smile on her face. Airi had her dimples.
"Come here. Don't be shy." She said with a thick Spanish accent. He walked over to the couch and sat where Adriana was sitting before she had crawled into her mothers lap.
"So tell me about you. I want to know about the boy who keeps my hija out all hours of the night." She said it with a smile on her face and a hand placed comfortingly on his knee. Hiro swallowed and looked at Airi who nodded encouragingly.
"I make robots." He said. "At SFIT."
"It's a universidad." Airi whispered. Her mother gasped and squeezed Hiro's leg.
"Muy intelejente! I like this boy Airi." Airi smiled and pushed her hair back.
"I do too."
