Liberty looked up when she felt eyes on her. She uneasily checked out who was doing it, and JT was doopily smiling down at her.
"Hi."
She tried not to smile, eyed him weirdly and then remembered she was mad at him. "What do you want?" she muttered.
He grabbed her hand and she gasped, but before she could pull away he pulled her to her brothers hospital room. She opened her mouth to ask questions but stopped when Snake, her mother and even Emma and Manny smiled at her.
Danny was smiling too. . which she hadn't seen a lot lately. "What..." she laughed in confusion, "What's going on?"
Her mother whispered happily, "He's..he's getting-" she choked up, not being able to speak.
"He's getting a heart, Lib." smiled Jt softlyand she looked over her shoulder to glance at him, soften, and look back at Danny for reassurance.
He nodded.
"There's a transplant coming." Snake told them, just as happy for them. Liberty covered her mouth and shut her eyes from tearing and laughed. She went to her family and they hugged another.
Danny pulled away first to joke, "When's this thing coming?"
"Our Doctor Hogart has gone to get it now." said Simpson, "Should be here in few hours, 5 tops."
Ellie entered with a chart for Danny to sign, "Here you go."
Liberty's mother glanced at Liberty and back at Danny biting her lip. Liberty confused, glanced at the paper. "What is this?"
Ellie looked at Emma and Manny, who looked away. Damn her job! She cleared her throat, "DNR papers."
Liberty looked at Snake and JT for explanation, "Do not resuscitate?" is that what that meant?
Manny went to Ellie with Emma and Emma whispered, "We'll leave you guys alone." the girls left.
Jt and Snake stayed.
Liberty snapped at Danny, "Why are you signing this? You're getting a heart!"
JT watched with a broken heart as Liberty yelled at brother for insisting that if this didn't work, he didn't want to try again. It was basically giving up.
Danny tried to explain to his sister, "Liberty, if this heart doesn't come through for some reason..."
"It will."
"The last one didn't." Danny shot back.
Liberty gasped, "You're on an LVAD. Ok? That could give you another two years right there."
"Lib...if I don't get this heart...I'm done. I'm...I'm sorry...I'm tired. " his mother too, put her hand on his shoulder. It had been a choice between them. She respected his wish. Liberty though, she had practically raised Danny herself. Her father was a surgeon, and her mother a nurse. They had barely been home. Danny was everything to her.
" No. No. I'm not going to let you make this decision. Not now. " she shook her head, running her fingers through her hair
Jt came up from behind and put his hands on her shoulders. She turned and he hugged her, and she cried into his shoulder
Snake tried to explain, "Whose saying this won't work out? He's going to get this heart Liberty." he looked at Danny, "We're getting you that heart."
They all nodded.
(((((((*******)))))))))
Manny told her patient, "O. The x-rays will tell us the location of the bullet."
"Mine was a through and through, right? So there's no bullet." the victim laid in her bed, tied up to many machines. She had been shot, and she was just a poor young woman who the gunman wasn't even aiming for.
"Yes." Manny nodded, "but we wanna make sure it didn't hit bone."
In another part of the hospital, Emma worked on another patient from the shoot out. It had happened in a restaurant. She was stitching the wound up and whispered, "Almost...got it. "
Brad snickered, "Do you know what you're doing? Because that really hurts, you know."
Emma looked up, giving him a look like he was the biggest idiot on earth. It was stitches. "You know what really hurts? Gunshot wounds. You're lucky." she confirmed.
"Lucky? There's no luck. Quick thinking, doll" he winked. Emma wanted to vomit. "I'm a quick thinker. Smart. Always right on it. As soon as I saw him, Petey...he's the shooter...I knew when I fired him he was no good. As soon as I saw him, I thought, "Oh, here we go." I just knew it was coming. Hey, Chaz. Larry.!" he called to the other two guys that were getting stitched up by Jt and Jay, "No offense, but you guys got to think quicker on your feet."
Jay even glanced over, noticing neither of these guys were telling their boss to go shove it. It was this guys fault why these men were shot.
Back with Emma, she snapped happily at Brad, "They have gunshot wounds. Very serious gunshot wounds. Life threatening gunshot wounds."
Brad went on, "Really helps that I'm an athlete because the second I saw Petey with that gun, I was like cat quick. Just dove right through the window. Those guys? Not so smart. "
" I'm going to take a wild guess and say that Petey was looking for you." Emma got up, and took off her gloves. What an asshole!
Brads mouth hung, watching the nurse storm off. "Hey!" he called, but she didn't come back.
Over by Jay, Snake came on over and while Jay stitched the young teenagers arm up, "About to leave for that heart once I'm done with this." he told Snake
Snake nodded, looked around and sighed, "Two dead, 14 injured... this is an awful shooting."
Jay offered, "I could stay. We could send Jesse."
"No," Snake says, "He's just a plastic surgeon, won't know how to handle it. You're our only cardiothoracic transplant specialist. You go get that heart."
Jay nodded and watched him go. Unfortunetly, him and his patient still had to listen to Brad go on and on, "You know, even with all these cuts, I don't feel any pain. I swear, I have the highest pain threshold of anybody I know."
Jay's patient, Will, muttered to him. "God I wish I could say something to that guy and not get fired."
Jay looked up, raised his eyebrows and finished his job. "He can't fire me" he took off his gloves and stood up, going over to Brad. "Hey, hero!" snapped Jay
Brad looked up, and his eyes widened. This doctor looked truly annoyed and angry.
Jay said sarcastically, "I'm happy for you that you're not feeling much pain from your very minor injuries. But there are a great many people in this hospital who are in a great amount of pain. See, they have bullets in their bones, in their chests, and in their brains. Bullets from a gun that was aiming for you. And although they can't say it because you are the boss of them, most of these people at this moment are praying...not that they'll live, not that the pain will subside, they're praying to God for you at this moment to shut the hell up."
Emma stood off to the right with Ellie, and both of them even tried hard not to smile, glancing around the room. Emma giggled a bit watching Jay walk off and then the rest of the room that were victims and workers of Brad clapped.
Brad swallowed, and shut up. Finally.
((((((((********)))))))))
Jay had to take a helicopter to another hospital for this heart. He had to take another doctor with him and Jt seemed really desperate to come. Jt just wanted to know first hand that Danny was going to be ok. He had to be, for Liberty.
When they got to the other hospital, it was a town over. Jay walked with one of the Doctors that worked there and was explaining everything to Jay, "We have a man and he's a match for your guy."
Jt asked happily, "So we get our pick?"
Jay chuckled, "It doesn't work like that. UNOS has already assigned who gets which donor."
Jts mouth fell, "Danny needs a heart! Whose retrieving the other heart?"
A voice cut them off, as a girl with black raven hair came over. She wore black scrubs, and had big caramel brown eyes and a natural tan. " Took you long enough to get here Hogart. Why is Junior here? Your ego get too big for one man to carry?"
Jt swallowed hard. This girl looked intimidating.
Jay snapped back easily, not so intimidated, he was Jay Hogart after all, "Alex here went to med school with me. She graduated second in our class at Johns Hopkins. JT, ask her who graduated first?" he smirked with that, and walked off.
Jt assumed it was Jay, Jay graduated first, then Alex. Jay was shoving that in her face to shut up.
Alex chased after Jay who went to the Cheif of her hospital, Joey Jeremiah. "You can't really be considering giving him this heart." she said, "I have a little boy who has been waiting a long time for a donor."
"Did the man agree to give it straight to the kid before he went under?" Joey asked her.
She frowned, "Well no but, he's at our hospital."
Jay taunted back, "We also have JUST a kid looking for a heart. Is your patient higher on the transplant list?" Alex didn't respond and he snapped again at her, "Is he higher on the transplant list?" he raised an eyebrow.
Alex glanced at her boss and he looked clueles. So did she. "I have no idea.."
Jay frowned but looked at the clock on the wall. At least they had a few hours to do this. "Well, neither do I. JT, get UNOS on the phone now. "
Alex's mouth dropped, "Oh, give me a break! We're actually going to fight over it? Call in the big guns!?"
Jay nodded and crossed his arms, waiting patiently with Joey as JT called the UNO office to find out which patient was higher on the list to get this heart. Alex's or Jay's
(((***)))
Ellie sighed, sitting at her desk. Jesse came over and too sighed while nodding. "Today has been rough."
"Those poor people, shot for someone elses' doing."
"They said they hadn't found the shooter yet." Jesse told her, "But they got a name and know who it is."
"Hope they find the bastard." Emma muttered, coming over and asked. "Has Jay come back yet?"
"He and JT are stuck at Mercy Hospital." Ellie told her, "Supposedly another Doctor is trying to steal Danny's heart."
"What a bitch." Emma snickered in disbelief. Jesse chuckled.
((((****))))
"Our guys barely making it on LVAD-"
Alex cut Jay off, "Your guys on an LVAD? He's probably up and walking around! My guy still holding on for dear life."
"Well, that's for UNO to decide." taunted Jay. He bitterly smiled at Alex's scowl. To say him and her had some history? Quite the understatement. Remember when Jay said he never commited to another girl before Emma? Well, it was true. Alex was his girl friend years ago, back in his college days, for 3 years and he STILL cheated on her left and right. She was no angel either though and not only slept with other guys, but girls too. Yet, she hated him like hell for it.
They could be friends if only their pride wouldn't get the best of them. Even though she was a girl, Jay swore she liked to play 'who has the bigger dick' with him.
Jt came in, "Our patient is was 17 seconds higher than your patient on the list." he told Alex.
Alex snickered rolling her eyes, "Might as well be 17 weeks. It still doesn't matter."
Jay's phone began to ring, and he gave it to JT to answer as he dealt with Alex. JT picked up, "Hello?"
"JT? It's Liberty."
JT glanced at the two fighting Doctors before he turned and whispered into the phone, "Liberty why are you calling?"
"Where's Jay? I wanted to know how the heart recovery is going."
Jt frowned but insisted, "He's working on it."
"He's working on it? So, he's bringing it over now?" she asked hopefully, a small crack in her voice that made his heart twist in pain.
"There's another Doctor here, they're...they're fighting over it."
" But there's a list!"
"Yes. And the higher guy gets the heart... We're figuring it out now."
There was a long pause. Liberty than spoke loud and clear, but JT heard the quiver in her voice. "Danny's getting sicker."
Jt paused. "What?"
"H-he's getting worse by the second. His, uh, sats are in the eighties..." Jt could already tell she was lying, but she was deperate.
He shut his eyes, "Lib.."
"It's seventies. His sats are now in the seventies and dropping!"
"Do you know how much trouble you can get into for lying?" JT warned her, but she sounded like she didn't care anymore. Her brother had to live.
"Put Jay on the phone!"
Jt froze, and then shut his eyes before turning to give it to Jay. If Liberty wanted to do it, she was going to do it. He fearfully watched as Jay looked like Liberty was telling him everything, and unlike JT, he believed her.
Jay asked her, "Well, did you put him on a nitro drip?"
Liberty replied back on the other end of the phone, "Um, yes. Yes, of course."
Alex, though couldn't hear the conversation, already knew what this was about. Their other patient was 'crashin'g. "She could be putting paddles directly on his heart. He's still not getting this thing."
Jay ignored her and turned to Joey who came back over, "According to my intern, Danny Van Zandts now qualifies as a 1A candidate for that heart. That puts him ahead of Alex's patient."
Joey glanced at Alex but nodded. Jay was right. "Alright."
Alex's mouth dropped and her eyes shot daggers before she stormed off, yelling over her shoulder, "This is just crap!"
Jay grinned as he brought his phone back to his ear, "Van Zandt? We got the heart."
((((((((((((*************))))))))))))))
Liberty numbly walked up to Emma who sat in the locker room putting on her shoes, she looked up and noticed something off. "Hey." she greeted.
Liberty's eyes were glazed over, "Um, I...I told a lie...to Jay."
Emma giggled a bit "Good for you. Fight the man power. " she tied her shoe up
Liberty shook her head, sucking in a shakey breath, "No, no. I need...um...God, I can't think." she shut her eyes tight, "I...I ... never mind." with that, Liberty ran out. When she was in the hall, she tried to act normal as she headed to Danny's room.
She stopped by the supply room, and started to steal supplies, her heart pounding as she did.
Danny looked away from his tv and sat up on his bed, "What's all that?" he asked. Liberty wheeled in a big machine and other supplies.
"heart stuff." She muttered.
Danny laughed nervously, "What? So you're gonna put this heart in me in my room? I didn't know transplants were so informal." he gave her a look, "You're only a pharmacist, assistant nurse at best."
Liberty finally turned to him, whipping her sweaty palms on her pants. "There may not be a heart, Danny. Somebody at Mercy West might get it instead.." she left the part out where she had illegaly claimed that heart by telling Jay that Danny was crashing and needed it now.
Danny was quiet, but still confused. "So..what are you doing?"
Liberty swallowed hard, "I have been over this and over this and it can't be a lie and it can't be fake. We need charts, we need test results. We need UNOS to believe us. So it has to be real."
Danny squinted his eyes to eye her closer, "What are you talking about, sis?"
She went over to him, and looked him eye level, "In order for you to get the heart, you would have to get worse. Much worse. And you would have to do it very quickly!"
" Well, I don't see that happening."...
Liberty looked firmly at him and walked over to that big machine. His eyes widened a little. She nodded and explained, "I am going to make it happen. "
((((((********)))))))))
Jay followed JT to the helicopter, "Tell Snake I'll be back soon with the heart." Jay told Jt
Jt nodded and got strapped in. "Yes sir."
"Don't fail me, Yorke." taunted Jay, walking off. Jt chuckled, happy he could work along Jay's side today. He truly did secretly look up to him and it seemed Jay was slowly starting to respect him.
The helicopter flew up, and Jt was anxious to get back. He had to find out what Liberty was up to. He hoped she wasn't lying...
(((***)))
"Liberty, stop and listen to me. We're not doing this." Danny looked panicked, Liberty looked so sure.
"Don't worry. You're not going to die. I will be here the whole time to make sure of that and that's what this stuff is for. " she pointed to the supplies.
"This isn't about me dying. All right? This is wrong. This can cost you your career!"
"I don't care!" Liberty bursted into tears, and they slid down her face as she sobbed, "I won' t care about that, my career, or anything else if you're dead!"
Danny looked away, his own tears shimmering in his eyes. He loved his sister so much, she had raised him, and she was so great. But he didn't want her to do this.
"I'm gonna call a nurse. .."
Liberty grabbed his hand from pushing the button, "I have hurt day after day, having to walk by this room and put up with your suicidal thoughts! You might not care that you could die, but what about me!?" she yelled harder, "WHAT ABOUT ME!?"
He was so choked up he couldn't even answer. He looked down and a tear slid down his cheek also.
She begged now, "Do it for me! Please! Please, Danny! Please do this for me! Because if you die...Oh, God you have to do this. You have to do this for me or I'll never be able to forgive you!" she sucked in a shakey breath. They didn't have much time.
Danny looked up into her eyes and finally nodded, "Ok. Ok, I'll do it." she crashed into his arms, and he held her tight.
((((***))))
As Jay watched the nurses put his heart in a cooler for him to fly back with, his phone rang again. He cleared his throat and answered, "Yea?"
Libertys numb voice replied, "You should get back here. With the heart. As soon as you can."
Jay tilted his head, "What the hell...what are you talking about?" he paused, and was now getting it. "Liberty, what did you do?"
"I'm printing his status report now, and I will fax them over to you. Then you should waste no time getting back here. Because I don't know enough to know how long Danny will have once I start.
Jay stood up straighter and snapped his fingers at the guy holding the cooler to come bring it to him, "Start? What did you do, Liberty? What did you do?"
"I'm going to hang up now. Just hurry." click.
(((((((((((**********))))))))))))
Emma was doing a round for the patients when Jay's patient from earlier spoke up when she passed. "My friend Kendra died."
Emma turned, and she played with her hands sadly before going over. "Ya. Two people died through this whole thing. You were lucky."
He snickered bitterly, glancing at the window. "And wheres Brad?"
"Signing out," she whispered. She knew it wasn't right either. The one the gunman was shooting for had gotten nothing compared to the other people hurt because of all this.
After a moment, Will asked, "Did they find the shooter?"
Sadly, Emma sat on the side of his bed and shook her head no. To their shock, Brad hadn't left the hospital and had come over. Very slowly.
Emma narrowed her eyes between Will and Brad, and the man cleared his throat. "I'm gonna get you some time off, man. I'm gonna talk to the owner, make sure they keep your job for you, you know?" he looked down, "It's not your fault you got shot. Not my fault either."
Emma shook her head. It WAS his fault. . but she could tell this was as nice Brad could be. This was nice for him.
Brad stuttered with his words and guilt filling up in his eyes " You know, I...I didn't...I didn't pull the trigger. Petey had the gun. I'm just saying. People blame management, but we do the best we can. I mean, I...I do the best I can. " he looked up, ashamed.
Will just stared at him, until he softly nodded. Brad nodded back and the whispered a goodbye before he left.

Liberty gasped when the door opened after she shut the blinds, and a breathless Jt stood there, staring right back at her..
Instead of explaining herself or anything, Liberty just locked the door right behind JT and let him stay. She turned to Danny and said, "Ok, after I do this, I might have to shock you a few times."
Jt's eyes widened, "Do what?"
Liberty asked Danny, "You feeling good?"
Danny nodded, "I-I think so. Explain this to me again. ."
She nodded, "Ok, the LVAD has been inserted into your abdomen and is connected to your heart. This cord," she picked up the clear wire, "leads to the power source, this one is connected to the pump that pumps your heart for you. I have the crash cart, the defibrillator, the Ambu bag, saline..."
Jt shut his eyes and paced the room. Any normal person or Doctor would go running screaming for help, but this was Liberty. She was only trying to save her brother. And JT had this problem, he was in love with her.
Liberty asked one time, "Ok, are you ready?"
Danny shut his eyes before nodding with a snicker, "As I'll ever be, sis."
She nodded back, her fingers shakey when she held the cord and picked up a pair of scissors.
JTs heart started to pound, "Wait. What are you doing?"
((((((((((((((************)))))))))
Emma was walking back to the lobby, when gun shots were heard. It was coming from the front of the hospital and Craig was walking down the other end. "GET DOWN!" he yelled.
Ellie ran under her table, and Jesse looked back and forth. The gun shot, it was just outside the Lobby doors, leading out to the front.
He ran out as fast as he could to make sure nobody was shot
(((****))))
"What was that?" whispered Manny in the locker room, turning to Mia and Paige. They shrugged. Manny jogged to the door, "Sounded like gun shots."
Meanwhile, Will, the gun shot patient, sat in his bed still and his eyes widened hearing the echo of gun shots. "Petey." The gun man must of come back.
(((((****))))
Back in Danny's room, the three were too busy to hear the shots. Liberty made a joke to her brother, "Danny. If there really is some kind of big glowy light..."
he laughed, "I'll try like hell to stay out of it."
"This is wrong, Liberty." Jt tried to reason with her. "What are you doing?'
"I'm stopping his heart, JT." she finally explained. His jaw dropped.
(((((****))))
When Jesse ran outside the hospital, he saw Brad lying in a pool of blood on the ground. He leaned down, checking his pulse. He was dead.
Back in Danny's room, Jt tried to reason with Liberty one more time. "don't." he whispered painfully.
Back outside with Jesse, he went to the other shot victim... Jay. He wasn't moving. Blood covered him as well.
"Jay? Jay!" Jesse tried to get a pulse and yelled over his shoulder, "GET ME SOME HELP!"
To the side of them laid the cooler with the heart for Danny...only, the messenger had been shot and nobody was bringing it to Liberty like she thought someone was.
Back in Danny's room, Liberty finally replied to JT, "It's ok," she promised, "Jay will be here any minute..."
She cut the cord, and Danny's eyes closed...his heart monitor flat lining.
