He couldn't get passed the second set of firewalls. Gritting his teeth, Donnie lightly hit the desk and tried to think of a way around it. He wanted to do his own data gathering to compare to Marian's, but the security for the lab system she sent him was extremely well done. He wasn't quite sure how well she was doing, but at least he could vouch for her attempts if she didn't get anything relevant. He resolved to set up an automated bot to go hunting around for the back door while he did other things.
Other things meaning go get Marian. Donnie felt sick at the thought of seeing her, but he knew he needed to get over this in order to focus on getting the other mutants. After that, he could just forget about her. Donnie did feel torn though. He did realize why she couldn't exactly tell him, especially if people were watching, and he realized he may have been being a little hypocritical seeing as he wasn't really sharing about himself either. However, the damage was done and he would either need to talk to her or never speak with her again.
He got up to find his brothers. Leo was getting ready, strapping his swords to his back. He nodded, patting him on the arm.
"You good to go?" Leo asked
"Yeah, I tried getting past the security systems of the place she sent me, but they're locked down tight. Hopefully she had more luck," Donnie said."You ready, Don?" Mikey called from the entrance to the lair. "We got a chick to pick up!"
Donnie quickly got ready and the four left for the rooftops. They made their way to April's home, climbing down the fire escape and peering inside the apartment. Marian was sprawled out on the couch, April's old laptop in her lap. Donnie could have sworn that thing was broken.
"Holy guacamole, Batbro! She looks hot!"
Donnie ignored his younger brother and let Raph give him a quick whack on the shoulder before they slipped into the apartment. Marian didn't even seem to notice the came in. Leo went to touch her arm, but she turned in time to show them her glowing blue eyes.
"One sec, guys," she said. "Trying to get some videos onto a secure server."
She turned back to the laptop, staring at the screen. Mikey took this time to look around for April. Donnie watching in slight awe as codes and windows were being written, closed, and opened rapidly on the screen without her even moving. He was jealous. If he could do that, he could easily cut down the hours it took to fix the electronics at home.
Marian suddenly snarled and hit the screen, muttering curse words as she slammed the laptop shut. Her eyes stopped glowing and she tossed it to the side. Raph caught it, giving her a look.
"Don't throw April's stuff," he said with a slight growl.
Marian had a bewildered look on her face, but sighed and nodded. She sat up, holding her hands up in defense.
"You're right. My bad. I don't really take care of electronics since I can just fix them. I'll be more careful, I promise."
Raph handed her back the laptop. Leo took a glance out the window.
"We should get going," he said.
"April isn't here!" Mikey whined when he returned from his hunt.
"She's off chasing leads but she sends you her love," Marian said. "The videos downloaded okay, but some of them were corrupt. Hopefully we can find away around that."
"What? You got past their system?" Donnie asked.
"Yeah, found the back door," she said, giving him a cheeky smile.
He frowned and turned away. Mikey picked her up, causing her to yelp and hang onto the computer.
"All aboard the Mikey Express!" He laughed, leaping out the window.
Marian let out a small scream of shock as she suddenly went outside, falling towards the ground. Mikey quickly grabbed the other building's fire escape, keeping a tight hold on Marian as he scaled up to the roof. Behind him his brothers quickly jumped out of the apartment, Leo shutting the window behind them when they all were out. They made their way to the roof, then headed for the nearest sewer entrance.
They were in the living area, scrunched on the couches and chairs watching the small laptop screen in Marian's lap. Well, most everyone. Mikey was turned away, keeping his hands over his ears so he couldn't hear the sounds of painful vomiting and to prevent himself from puking everywhere.
"Can we stop this?" Raph asked. "We don't need to be seeing these."
"I only am showing-" Marian started to say.
"-to emphasize your point. I think we get that. But this is just sick and we don't need forty torture porn videos to drill it in."
Marian turned and looked at the images she was showing the turtles. It was of a young man, slowly growing bony and sickly thin as he continued to vomit out everything within his system. On his back, spines were breaking through his skin, leaving blood and pus caked on him. She didn't seem too bothered by it, but she shut the video off. She pulled up his file instead, showing several progression shots of him going from a hefty three hundred fifty to just barely over one hundred. Raph groaned and looked away.
"All these people are at the facility and we don't even have a name for it yet?"Leo said, exasperated.
"I imagine they don't put any logos or names on the documents as a protection," Donnie said. "Or they don't have a name for it at all."
Marian hit a few keys and brought up a blueprint of the building.
"This is for the so-called bike shop. I don't think you guys could fit through the vents, but I think this here-" she pointed to one of the thick white lines. "-is part of the sewer. More room to come up from there."
"No blueprints for the lab? Here I thought you were some great hacker," Raph said.
She shot him a glare. "For your information, I never claimed to be a hacker at all. But even if I was, I can't get files that don't even exist anymore. They got rid of them and if you don't believe me, have Donnie look that up.'"
"Speaking of which, I need to check something. One sec," Donnie said.
He got up from his chair and quickly headed off to his computer set up. Marian pulled up another picture, poorly drawn in MS Paint.
"I don't have a blueprint for this but this was the corridor they would take me down when they took me out of the room. The elevator right here I think goes to several different floors. I would bet my socks on it."
"So how many prisoners are held on each floor?" Leo asked.
"If my floor was any indicator, it was roughly thirty to forty people on each floor. I imagine more important ones would be kept away from the rest of the population, so they have less on the floors they're on."
"There's going to be a whole bunch of mutants.I can't even think where we can put them all. They certainly won't be able to stay here long term."
Donnie came back and sitting back down. He eyed Marian, a puzzled look on his face. Leo kept going.
"We can check out the building. Marian, try getting more info on anything pertaining to the building. Don can help you out if needed."
Marian looked over at him and gave him a small smile. He looked away quickly. Leo got up, grabbing Raph and Mikey on his way. Raph took a look back at Marian and just shook his head before following his brothers out. She sighed and stretched her back.
"Now that they're gone, we can really get to work," she said.
"Marian," Donnie said.
If she were a dog, her ears would have perked up. She quickly turned to him in restrained excitement. Donnie frowned and crossed his arms.
"Can I see your file?" He asked.
Marian deflated. She bit her lip and scratched the back of her head. Reluctantly, she typed a few things on the computer, clicked some stuff, then handed the laptop to Donnie. He took it and started looking it over. Her file had an old-looking photo of her at the head of it, and most of the information had *FOR UPPER MANAGEMENT ONLY* instead of actual info. What wasn't covered were the notes at the bottom, taken by the attendants who watched her cell. Donnie glanced at Marian. She was chewing on her finger nails. He went back to reading the notes.
The first one said, "Patient lacks understanding of destruction of property" with an additional note added below it saying "she knows, she doesn't care." The next note said, "Marian is the nice one. Look for the cues that she's there." This made Donnie glance up in nervousness and went through the rest of the notes. They talked about her violent nature, hostility, making sure she properly took her medication, and the last set of notes was underscored. "She hates humans. Do not trust her."
"You found my file on your computer, didn't you?" She asked quietly.
"Yes," he said curtly.
"I can guarantee that's all there is."
"I know. I just wanted to see if you'd show me. Can you tell me why there is so little on here?"
"Top secret, maybe?" Marian rubbed the back of her head. "I guess I'm really important."
"Can you tell me about the notes?"
"That was when I was... Not as nice as I was now. I ended up doing lots of damage to equipment, personnel, anything I could get my hands on. They started medicating me, I eventually chilled out, then they gave me a computer to waste the time away."
"It's still odd they decided to give you a computer with access to the outside, Marian."
"I don't know every part of their nefarious plans, Donnie. I just know they gave me a computer and I was able to use it for games. That's it."
Donnie thought about what was meant by Marian being the 'nice one' in the notes, but decided to keep that question to himself till later. He still felt there was more to this puzzle than she let on, but finding out how to gain access and navigate the building took priority. The turtle got up, handing her back her laptop, and leaving to see what else his back bot had uncovered. Marian kept seated. As she was watching him leave, her eyes began to glow again and she turned back to the screen. She slumped in her seat, her mind going through the vast cyberspace to hunt down more information.
Mikey was the first to point out the vans that kept passing by the old bicycle shop. They were standard windowless and creepy black vehicles complete with shadowy figures moving unrecognizable objects in and out of them. Leo decided the next one that leaves would be stopped to check out the contents.
As the three turtles watched from the shadows of the roof across the street, their human friends pulled from an alley, parking the car just out of sight. Vernon gritted his teeth while April was busy pulling out a camera from her bag.
"This isn't shady at all," Vernon said sarcastically. "Old abandoned building with people randomly going in and out of it? Nothing suspicious here! Nothing dangerous!"
"If you're going to be a big baby about it, you can wait in the car," April said teasingly, getting out.
Vernon quickly followed suit, shutting the door as quietly as he could.
"I just don't see how this is linked to those kidnappings you were looking into," he said.
"It wasn't until that Marian girl showed up that I had a thought. Remember how I told you she was able to see Don through the computer with no camera or anything? And she played that one game? Swords and blades?"
"Orc Blades and Human Swords," he corrected.
"Whatever! But that made me think about the kidnapping victims. They all had games along those lines and that particular one was on every single one of their shelves. And all of them were living alone, with barely any outside contact. What if someone was able to pick them out because they knew they were alone?"
"So you think Marian had something to do with this? Why aren't you telling the turtles then?"
"I need proof and I'm getting it," April dropped her voice down to a whisper before dashing behind a nearby dumpster.
Vernon followed her, muttering something about never signing up to be a detective. As one black van pulled away, another pulled up and the people driving quickly went inside. April quickly got up. She ran closer, finding a pile of trash to stay behind. She readied her camera and as soon as the workers came back out, she started snapping pictures. They were carrying large trash bags and tossing them carelessly inside the van.
On the roof, panic ensued.
"What the hell, is that-"
"Why is April here?!"
"She's gonna get caught! Guys, we need to do something!"
April managed to get at least twenty pictures before any one of the people saw her. Once she got caught, she started running. Vernon quickly grabbed the nearest thing – half of a pallet – and hurled it at her pursuers, tripping two. He ran after her, both running for the car. Leo quickly leapt off the roof, rolling as soon as he hit the ground. He sweep kicked two more chasers, knocking them down. Raph landed hard behind him. He picked one of the downed men up, hurling him up in the air and spin kicking him into a wall.
Mikey jumped and landed in front of April and Vernon. He grinned, waved, and proceeded to hop over them and go running to what was left of their pursuers. Mikey cheered, barreling over the three remaining men and smashing their faces into the asphalt. April panted, leaning against the wall. Vernon wiped the sweat off his brow.
"That's an adrenalin rush," he said. "Nice timing."
"April, what are you doing here?" Leo asked.
"The story I'm reporting. It's about kidnappings that have been going back for years now. They only realized they were linked due to several recent ones in the last year," she said. "What are you doing here?"
"This is the place Marian escaped from."
"What? Seriously?"
He nodded. Behind him, Raph and Mikey were tying all the men up in a nice row along the wall. Once they finished, Mikey headed for the van they were driving.
"April, you're going to need to call Don. Tell him we can't wait and we need to go in now," Leo said.
Mikey hummed to himself as he started checking out the bags. They were regular trash bags. They were trouble baffles and felt slick and slightly wet. He shivered at the grossness, but ripped open one of the bags to check it out. Raph heard Mikey vomit first. He ran over, seeing his brother bracing himself against the side of the building before hurling again.
"R-Raph! Raph, they… They're in pieces," Mikey said, staring at him in horror.
Raph turned to the van, the smell of death hitting his face. He grimaced and forced himself to look inside the open bag. Staring back at him was a young boy's face, cheek ripped own starting from the edge of his mouth. His teeth were punched out, his eyes wide with horror, and stringy remnants of tendons and muscle hung out from his neck. Also in the bag was a foot. It wasn't his, as he was Asian and the foot was a dark brown. Raph turned away, gagging.
"Leo! Leo!" He yelled out to him. "They-they're purging the building. We gotta move now!"
Leo quickly joined them and they kicked down one of the doors, rushing inside. April pulled out her phone and called Donnie.
"Hello?"
"Don, it's April. They're purging the building."
"What?"
"They're bringing out bodies to dispose of them elsewhere. The others already went inside."
He hung up. April hugged the phone to her chest, unable to shake the terrible feeling in her stomach.
