Renee landed with a tuck and roll, popping up with her weapon drawn, while behind her Banner and Denning landed with two loud crashes, as the Eagle soared overhead. Erick, who'd transformed just before jumping, had created a Hulk-sized crater in the street, and Randall, now standing at 30 feet, had surprisingly, left the asphalt beneath him relatively unscarred.
Before them was a scene of chaos and destruction. The group of about six men was armed with alien tech of varying sizes and calibers, dressed in obviously low-grade human-made body armor. All around them were flames, smoke, and panic. There were strange holes in the buildings and vehicles around them that appeared to have been melted by extreme heat. These weapons were unlike anything Erick or Randall had ever seen; large, metallic, yet organic looking weapons, that looked strange in the hands of a group of human thugs. Renee had seen weapons like these a few times before, and knew exactly what kind of damage they could do. On the other side of the group of men was a barricade made up of partially destroyed tanks and hummers and cop cars. Police and soldiers were positioned behind the barricade attempting to fire at the men, however, their shots were ineffective while being fired at with alien tech.
Renee turned to her two teammates, and began giving orders, "Avoid being hit by those charges at all costs. Our priority is to disarm and disable them, NOT to kill them. Secondary priority is to protect the civilians and assist the police and the army. Iron Valkyrie and Aro will arrive shortly by air and take them from behind." Randall gave an immature chuckle, which was more like a low rumble coming from his chest 20 feet above their heads. Renee made a mental note to smack the shit out of him when they returned to base.
"Randall," she barked, "you're on civilian duty. Make sure they stay out of the way, and make sure those buildings don't fall."
"What?" he said loudly, "You can't do that! You can't bench your best player!"
"This isn't up for discussion Denning!" Renee barked.
She quickly looked over to Banner, who was standing there, in his empowered state, calmly observing the scene before him.
"Banner," she got his attention, "I need you focused. You're with me. Remember," she said to both of them, "don't get hit, and don't kill them. Let's go!"
Renee sprinted forward into the fray, catching the attention of the group of thugs. Three of them turned their attention from the soldiers and police officers on their other side, and began shooting glowing blue charges at her. She nimbly avoided them, and jumped, landing a powerful kick to the chest of the foremost thug. The man fell backwards, gasping for air, and the men around them closed in on Renee. She jumped about, landing punches and kicks on the thugs surrounding her.
Erick had run forward with Renee, but stopped short of the fray. He'd never used his "hulk-form" to actually do any damage; his transformations had almost always been unintentional. Unlike the creature his father turned into, who had a personality all his own, Erick was still the same person inside a different body. He was not a violent man, and he had no idea what he was capable of. Don't kill them? Easier said than done. With his tree-trunk arms he could just as easily crush someone to death, as hug them. He watched Captain Rogers jump about nimbly, skillfully punching, kicking, and dodging, the six over-armed thugs struggling to hit her. He was so unsure of his own abilities that he stayed back, preferring to watch the Captain take on the thugs by herself. She seemed to have this all under control.
Randall stood there furiously, as the Captain ran forward into the fray. Like hell he was going to just stand there and watch the civilians and cops run away, which was exactly what they had started doing once they arrived. He watched bitterly as the Captain handled all six of the thugs single handedly. Banner was just standing there stupidly, again, not using his "supposed" super strength. With a swipe of his hand, Randall could have this whole thing ended in seconds. He grinned at the notion, and stepped forward, closing the 50 foot distance in two steps. He reached down for one of the thugs, attempting to use his size to subdue him. The thug noticed him, however, and panicking, shot a blue charge at Randall's hand. Randall howled in pain, and shook his hand as flames erupted from his palm. A slur of profanities escaped him as he attempted to beat the flames out against his thigh.
Renee was distracted by the commotion, leaving herself open for fire from one of the thugs. She noticed the ball of energy hurling at her, and dove out of the way just in time. However, the charge hit a car, causing an explosion big enough to knock Renee off her feet and send her flying into an overturned bus. The fatigue of fighting the six thugs alone for so long, and the damage dealt by the explosion was enough to render her momentarily prone.
Banner watched this scene unfold before him, shocked at how quickly the tides had turned. He noticed the same thug that had shot at Renee before was approaching her, ready to shoot her at point-blank range. He ran forward, vaulted over the bus, and landed between Renee and the thug, just as a ball of energy shot towards them. The charge struck him in his broad chest, and he let out a roar of pain. The spot on his chest sizzled, and Renee could smell burned flesh. Erick stood there, his head down, back hunched over, breathing heavily, as the wound slowly began to heal, much to the thug's dismay. Renee was still behind Banner, and couldn't see his face as he slowly raised his head. She took the thug's look of panic as a bad sign, and said, standing up,
"Banner, remember your objective."
Erick heard her, but didn't acknowledge her. His chest, though fully healed, still burned, and he was more shocked than angry that he'd been shot. With his mind clear, he decided to take the thug's pause as an opportunity to try to wrench his gun away from him. He towered over the man in front of him, and, extending his arm, easily took the gun from his grasp. The man, now completely unarmed, panicked and bolted. When Banner just stood there and let the thug get away, Renee started,
"Banner! You're letting him get away! We're supposed to-"
She was interrupted when finally Iron Valkyrie and Aro joined the fight.
Terra was shocked at what she was seeing. Her visor located and highlighted her allies and enemies for her. To their left Randall, standing at roughly 30ft, was being shot at repeatedly by five of the assailants, black spots where he'd been burned covering him. To their right, the Captain and Banner stood by an overturned bus as one of the thugs sprinted away. The blue Hulk was awkwardly holding one of the enemy's guns in his massive hand, as the Captain shouted something at him. Suddenly, Terra noticed Randal, his hand pulled back, ready to backhand all five of the assailants below. That idiot was going to kill them! "Aro!" she directed the Asgardian to stop Randall from killing the assailants.
Aro nodded, and flew towards Randall's massive hand, flaming sword drawn. He struck Randall's hand with his sword with a flash of fire. Randall howled in pain and brought his hand back up to his chest. He looked down, and glared at Aro. With his other hand he smacked the demi-god across the street and crashing through the wall of a building.
"Denning!" Terra screamed at him.
"I'm gonna fucking kill him!" Randal roared, "Did you see what he did?"
Suddenly, Aro flew from the hole in the building, and collided with Randall, sending him crashing into the building behind him. Even with his size advantage, Randall was no match for a begrudged demi-god with a flaming sword. Terra called for the Captain and Banner to help break up the fight, and then flew in to help as she could.
Renee couldn't believe what was happening. She looked up at the fight that was taking place roughly 25 feet above her, and knew that there was nothing much she could do. The Iron Valkyrie was hovering awkwardly around Aro as he used not his sword but his fists to beat Randall to a giant pulp. It was obvious that there was nothing she could do short of talking Aro out of his rage. She looked at Banner, still standing there with the gun in his hand, doing nothing. "Banner!" she barked at him, "Get up there and help break up that fight!"
Before Banner had the chance to move, she noticed the thugs were back, and using the fight as a distraction. A heavy rain of blue charges came flying at them. Renee was able to quickly find cover, Banner was shot several times before doing the same. The hale of charges broke up Aro and Randall's rather one-sided fight. Randall shrank down to his normal size, and ran for cover, far away from the scene of the action, and Aro used his sword to launch a line of fire at the thugs. Terra's Iron Valkyrie suit was designed to detect potential threats such as these energy charges, and to give her an edge in avoiding them. She gracefully avoided the charges, and returned fire, knocking three of the assailants prone. This combined with Aro's rain of fire, provided Renee the chance to apprehend one of the thugs. The four remaining thugs knew that they'd lost, and turned to retreat. Renee, who had the thug pinned to the ground, shouted for her teammates to pursue them, however, Terra responded with a defying response.
"Let them go Cap, we've got one of them for questioning. That's all we need."
"You're willing to let them all escape? To let them go and hurt more innocent people?" Renee said, unintentionally putting pressure on the thug's neck.
"In case you haven't noticed Captain," Terra said, agitated, "this mission was a complete wreck. We need to cut our losses and regroup."
"If you all would have just listened to me it wouldn't have been a wreck!" Renee shouted.
She knew Stark was right, but so was she. Renee wasn't afraid of much, but she was afraid of what she knew Maria's reaction was going to be.
