I DO NOT OWN FIRE EMBLEM OR ANY OF ITS CHARACTERS
Fruit Alphabet: Banana
Chrom had grown up with a silver platter presented to him. Every day of his princely life, he need not rise a finger for breakfast to be immediately served to him. When the time for lunch would come around, he would simply have to saunter inside the dining hall to suffice as the cue for the kitchen staff to hurriedly present him their finest menu. And, during the evening, he would normally ask a maid to pack him snacks before he would go off and sneak out for his nightly practice sessions.
In other words, Chrom never learned to cook. As much as he wanted to—which he did not- he would not be able to be presented the chance; the society thought it was absurd for nobility to learn how to fix food when they have got hundreds of servants to do the task.
But right at this moment, he wished he had spent those swashbuckling nights with preparing meals instead.
But hope will never die; nobody was too old nor too late to learn something new. And so, with the evil genius plan that he had only conjured the night before, he had managed to kick each and every one of the Shepherds from the camp. So right now, his friends were out frolicking at a nearby festival while he was grappling with his part-time job as a mess sergeant.
"Gods, why is this so hard to do? I managed to… Sneak out some of Robin's cook books but—Ah damn! It burned again!"
For the fifth time that day, Chrom was painstakingly trying to heat sugar so he could create a caramel sauce. He has watched Gaius do it, and so he tried his best to mimic the steps the sugar-lover did in order to procure the relish. He was doing well, really, so he wondered why in the heavens would his work turn black that quickly.
Little did he know, he mistook one tiny information: He thought a bigger fire would yield him faster and better results.
And when he successfully crafted his hard lump of black substance for the tenth time, he just felt his right hand move on its own. After a while, he found himself mercilessly beating the hells out of the stove, the pots, and the harmless inanimate neighbors quietly sitting near the destroying machine that was Chrom.
"To hell with you, to hell with you!" Chrom grunted as he let falchion swish and swash through everything within his radius.
When he snapped back to his calm senses, his eyes grew wide at the masterpiece he has created. Saying that the objects were finely sliced and diced would be an understatement; the utensils were pulverized. He let out a long, droned sigh and began to gather up spare materials for his fruitless pursuits.
After setting up another make-shift kitchenette, he took Robin's cook book in his left hand and began flipping through it with his right, "Hmm, banana recipes, banana recipes…" He murmured to himself whilst scanning the pages for the yellow fruit, "Ah, here! This ought to do."
If there was a god of bananas, he would certainly pray to that god to give him the ability to create something adjacent to Robin's tastes. After all, when he asked her what she would prefer eating, she had answered "Bananas!" with a big grin dancing on her lips.
With a tired smile on his face, he pulled back his one armor-less sleeve and indulged himself yet again in another bout of cooking struggles. Gods, if it really were not for his strong desire to put a grin on Robin's lovely face, he would not bother attempting such foolish things. Never.
A few broken tables, pots with holes at the bottom, a sack of banana peelings, and a piece of Chrom's singed hair later, the prince was finally able to hold onto the bowl of the most beautiful, edible something he has ever concocted. And while he held onto it as if it were his lifeline, he could not help but beam like a kid who has got his first sword.
"I hope Robin will like this…" He murmured happily to himself.
"Like what?"
Chrom was so scared out of his wits that he managed to string three sentences of curses together; and then another five more strings when he recognized the voice that addressed him.
He never thought such a lovely voice could frighten him so.
"Wow Chrom, I think we should ask Tharja to cast a profanity hex on you; you curse like a sailor!" Robin jokingly told him with her hands on her hips.
"No thanks." The blue-haired man declined in a very hurried tone while having his back faced to her.
Robin simply chuckled and put a hand on her lover's shoulder- he flinched at her touch.
"Sooo," She playfully prodded, "What was it that I would like? Except for the ruins that was probably supposed to be a kitchenette, of course."
Still not looking at her, Chrom sucked in his breath as a landslide of embarrassment entombed him, "I do not know what in the heavens you are talking about." He lamely denied.
Robin sighed and put her other hand on her beau's other shoulder, "You're the only one who would not even bother to take a glance at the price tag before smashing." She sighed again before leaning in and putting her weight onto his back, "Tell me about what you're hiding."
Chrom was flushed. Suddenly, he was conscious of everything about her; the way her hands brushed his clothes in a feathery manner, the way her hair made contact with and tickled the back of his neck, the way her breath landed hot puffs on what was exposed of his skin, and finally the way her modest chest pressed against his back.
He could feel a man's common problem reaching his lower midsection, so he decided to flee the scene before it became too obvious for the world to see.
As he ran to his intended direction with Robin helplessly trailing behind him, he could not help but look at the bowl of yellow fruit in his hold. He mentally slapped himself for relating the fruit to his present dilemma.
Biting his lower lip, he barged in his own quarters and willed himself to steady his racing heart. After a moment of calming himself, he heard the flap of his tent violently thrown open. He did not bother looking at the intruder for he already knew who it was.
"Chrom… Why did… Why did you… Run like that?" Robin asked in between her gasps for oxygen.
This was it. If he was going to obtain a smile from her face, then this was the perfect opportunity to do so. With an intake of air to steel his words, he let out an honest and heartfelt statement to her.
"I love you. Robin, I love you. Have I told you how much I love you? If I haven't, then…" He turned around to lock his warm eyes with the puzzled pair of hers, "I hope this speaks itself to you."
He took little steps forward until he was an arm away. And then, with a small but genuine smile gracing his lips, he stuck out his hands and gently urged the porcelain bowl into hers. After she received it with mild awe, he took a step back and admired how his handicraft complimented his future queen well.
"Chrom, this is…" Robin breathed out, "A bowl of... peeled bananas." She stated the obvious as her voice faded into a whisper.
"Yes," Chrom proudly confirmed, "I believe that simplicity is beauty."
If she was a normal woman and he an ordinary man, she would have slapped the bowl into his handsome face whilst complaining to him about not buying jewelries instead. In their case, however, she was not really a 'lady'—as Chrom coined—and he has no knowledge whatsoever of what being a run-of-the-mill was like. She knew about this fact and made it the fuel to her appreciation. Nothing could be farther away than the idea of her not appraising his efforts with high value.
In fact, she found this gesture of him worth more than ten folds of all the jeweled trinkets a man could give his wife in a lifetime. Yes, this little bowl of peeled ordinary bananas held a higher fortune than most treasures she knew.
He was a prince; but despite being such, he knew that giving her all the accumulated diamonds in his castle would not show her how he felt—it was giving her his heart that would.
"Oh Chrom this is… This is the third most beautiful thing I have ever received in my life!" Robin squealed as she started jumping up and down like a child.
Chrom was taken aback by her response. No, it was not because she was overly happy to receive such a simple gift; it was because she worded that his gift was 'third' best.
He didn't want to be beat by anybody; especially not about things concerning his beloved.
"Err…" He started while awkwardly clenching his right hand, "Third?"
Still under the spell of such a great surprise for her, Robin went to his desk and planted the bowl on the wooden surface, "Yes. The second one was the ring you gave me."
It felt like Grima personally visited Chrom to crush him between its jaws.
"Huh? My proposal was only second best?" Chrom asked with a disappointed tone.
He could not believe it; he could not believe that the very solidification of his love and devotion for her was bested by whatever. Did she hold someone else more weighty than him? Chrom could not fathom the thought; he clicked his tongue in disgust.
"Tell me, who is this person who would gi—"
Her lips were soft. They were just like those candy flosses that Gaius urged Chrom to take in; it melted in his mouth and left a very sweet taste. However, unlike the pink cotton candy, her kiss was much more delicious; it was highly addictive. He had shared countless of pecks ranging from chaste to intense with her, but each and every one of them felt like his first.
When they parted, Robin cracked a beam amidst the redness that has conquered her face, "Why did your mouth taste like bananas?" She asked with a giggle escaping her throat.
Chrom could not help but simper, "Because I ate all the failed banana dishes I made. I actually managed to use all of the ones inside our fruit provision sack."
Robin laughed; he hugged her tight. After her voice died down into a wordless chuckle, he asked her out of his dying curiosity, "What's the most important gift you have ever received?"
Before he could even recover from his madly beating heart, he received another kiss to his lips—a lot longer and more compassionate this time. When they parted, Robin stared lovingly into his eyes and mouthed the word that made his heart flutter.
...
"You."
