Ooh, it's all gone horribly wrong. Poor Amy :-(
"You mean the crack was in your TARDIS all along?" exclaimed Rory with a mixture of anger and disbelief. "Let me see it!"
"I've sealed that corridor Rory" replied a tearful Eleven. "It's too dangerous."
"But, but I've got to be with her. I demand to see the crack, maybe I can get her out."
"There's nothing you can do Rory, but we will get her back, you have my word."
"But Doctors" interrupted Clara, "Didn't you say that once we flew away, everything would be reset, and that it was only the presence of the two TARDISes that was causing the problems?"
"That was before we learned that the crack was on board one of the TARDISes" replied a solemn Twelve.
"So you didn't know that leaving would work?" continued Clara.
"No" replied Eleven. "I've been trying, we've been trying, that's why I didn't join you tonight, as we are leaving tomorrow and I really wasn't sure."
"Rory" spoke Twelve, "You have to believe this, but your Doctor is a good man. He was still working to solve the problem of the cracks, while I, I was ready to reluctantly move on."
"Move on?" replied Rory is a voice full of disdain, tears flowed down his cheeks. "Well now I've lost Amy, I can never move on."
And with that Rory fled Twelve's TARDIS.
After a period of contemplative silence, it was Clara who spoke first.
"So you lied to me again!" exclaimed Clara to Twelve angrily.
"I may not have told the whole truth."
"But why?"
"We couldn't find any crack or reason for what had happened, we'd looked everywhere."
"So you gave up?"
"Clara, maybe us leaving would have reset everything."
"And you really believe that? For once Doctor, tell me the truth before I have to slap it out of you!"
"I admit I wasn't entirely convinced."
"So you thought that flying off and escaping was the solution?"
"It was a solution."
"Not for the kittens though."
"Clara, we searched the whole planet for a crack, and found nothing. We could have been here for another month and still found nothing. I didn't want to waste your time here; it might have been boring for you."
"But why not tell us? Tell us that you didn't have an answer, let us have a say."
"You would then have probably refused to leave this planet. Humans tend to get rather emotional about cuddly animals, less so cockroaches or wasps."
Clara glared at Twelve.
"I think Rory needs someone with him. Someone human."
And with that she stormed out of Twelve's TARDIS.
"The crack is sealed off" spoke Eleven solemnly after the two had left. "I didn't want Rory doing anything stupid."
"Good move" replied Twelve. "In his state, he probably would have. 2000 years of waiting, and it all ends like this. If we can't bring Amy back, then Rory, well I'd rather not think about it."
"Now we don't have a choice, we have to solve this crack problem. I presume it was caused when our TARDISes collided."
"Yes, I assume it created a crack in time which sucked in all the living creatures on this planet before your TARDIS rematerialized around it."
"Well at least we know where the crack is, that's a start. But how do we reverse this process?"
"I don't know, but I suspect that it's something I have to do."
Clara had rushed out of Twelve's TARDIS and into Eleven's, where she assumed Rory had returned to his quarters, and sure enough when she reached them, she heard the sound of Rory crying behind the closed door.
"Rory, it's me" Clara spoke gently.
"Come in" replied Rory in a weak voice, "The door isn't locked."
Clara slowly opened the door and saw a distraught Rory curled up on the sofa, a wedding photo in his hands. She rushed over and put her arms around him, saying nothing. Eventually Rory responded, returning the hug, again in silence. The two held each other like this until eventually Clara spoke.
"They'll bring her back, I know they will."
"How do you know? They didn't even know where the crack was! She's gone, my Amy is gone." And with that Rory dissolved in tears again. As Clara held him, she replied.
"Now they know where the crack is, they'll be able to reverse everything. Soon Amy and the kittens will be back, and you won't remember any of this. Your Doctor, he's a good man, I've seen him in the future."
"And yours?"
"I don't know, but I think he'll do the right thing now."
"Maybe you're right. I tried to find the crack when I entered this TARDIS, but that corridor was sealed off. If I jumped in, I'd be back with Amy, I don't care about anything else."
"Now don't do anything silly. I'll be here for you if you need me."
"Thanks."
Clara then gently took the wedding photo from Rory's hand.
"Amy made a beautiful bride. And I never got to see your wedding album and the drunken giraffe!"
"You would have liked that."
"Perhaps I'll get a live demonstration once we've got Amy back!"
Clara kissed Rory on the cheek and stood up.
"I'll be off to see what the Doctors are doing."
Clara waved as she left the room, Rory numbly waving back. Outside she walked back to Eleven's console room, where Eleven was frantically working.
"How is he?" Eleven asked in a worried voice.
"As well as can be expected."
"We'll get Amy back, I swear we will, even if it means that I never leave this planet."
"I know you will" replied Clara even though she wasn't entirely sure she believed it. She then exited and returned to Twelve's TARDIS, where Twelve was waiting for her.
"You lied to me!"
Twelve said nothing, so Clara continued.
"I thought I could trust you, but no you lied to me again! You were prepared to leave this planet, to abandon it. It sounded too good to be true, I was right to be suspicious."
"It might have worked."
"Oh stop pretending Doctor!" replied Clara angrily. "You knew it wouldn't work, but wanted to cut and run. I thought I learned to trust you, but no. I've had enough! I've had enough."
Clara's voice broke as she said this, and she continued as tears poured down her cheeks.
"I can't take this anymore, every time I think I know you; you find a new way to let me down again. When this is over you can return me back home and never return, as I've had enough! Find someone else to lie to instead, that you can treat like a speck of insignificant dirt."
Twelve said nothing so Clara continued.
"When I see your former self, he cares, he's the Doctor, I don't know if you are the Doctor any more."
"Ok" Twelve finally calmly replied.
"Is that all you have to say for yourself?" Clara exclaimed. "Ok!"
"Yes!" snapped Twelve back, "Because frankly at this precise moment in time, your feelings about me are a very low priority."
Clara looked at Twelve in shock as he continued.
"Rory and Amy had each other, that was always the one consolation when I lost them. Amy chose to leave me to be reunited with Rory, and it was heart-breaking for me, but the right decision. They belonged together, and now I've destroyed that and Amy is gone. How do you think I'm feeling now?"
"It wasn't your fault."
"I was the one who caused the collision. Yes, I wanted to cut and run, nobody is perfect, and this was one problem that I thought I couldn't fix. I'm not a hero Clara, I try my best, and sometimes, just sometimes I fail."
"But the promiseā¦"
"Ah yes, never give up, never give in and all that."
"What are you going to do now?"
"I'm going to get Amy back. I'm afraid you're not going home until that happens."
"Of course."
"I will get Amy back; everything else at this point doesn't matter. I can't let Rory down."
Clara walked across to Twelve and gently held his arm.
"I know you will get her back. As you are the Doctor."
Clara then exited to her room, where exhausted by the emotion of that evening's events, she collapsed on her bed fully clothed.
Twelve stared at his console screen. He was conscious at how disappointed Clara had been with him, but had more important things to concentrate on. At least Clara was safe, and she had P.E. anyway, whereas Rory needed Amy back, and he was going to get her back. Of course it wasn't remotely important, but it would be good to part from Clara on a positive note too.
Twelve started feeling a bit upset at the thought of Clara leaving, but quickly put such thoughts aside as he had to concentrate on the crack. After a thought started generating in his mind, Twelve walked across to Eleven's TARDIS.
"Can I see the crack."
"Come this way, you remember where Amy's old room was?"
"Just about, well it was a long time ago."
Eleven took Twelve down the corridor, and after checking that Rory wasn't anywhere nearby, used his sonic to open the door that he had earlier sealed shut. There on the other side was the crack; there could be no doubt that this was what had accounted for Amy.
"This is directly on the line to their old bedroom. You may recall that such cracks are irresistible to most living things, so I'm sure Amy was lured in."
Eleven paused as his eyes grew teary again, before continuing.
"Do you think we can get her back, I mean we have to, but how?"
"I don't know if it will work" replied the sombre Twelve, but maybe I need to go into the crack as well."
Poor Rory, his worst nightmare, being separated from Amy.
Thanks for the reviews. I'm aware that the tone of this story has shifted somewhat, but I wanted put the relationships under more pressure, and bring out some of the S8 Doctor/Clara issues...
