Now the Doctors know where the crack is, a terrible decision has to be made...
"Go in?" exclaimed Eleven. "Are you sure, I mean there's no way out."
"Well I have to do something" replied Twelve, "I have got to bring Rory and Amy back together, I have no choice. It would destroy Rory, being parted from Amy, and would also be rewriting their history, and as a result my history. Who knows what effects this could have?"
"Well don't do anything hasty. Jumping in won't achieve anything, it's unlikely you'll be able to exit of your own free will."
Twelve paced around in an agitated manner before speaking.
"What do you think would happen if I sent my TARDIS into the crack?"
Meanwhile, in the other TARDIS, Clara had woken up after a couple of hours, and to her annoyance realised she was still dressed. Lying on her bed, she recalled the events of the evening, and found herself feeling slightly regretful at what she had said to Twelve. Yes, he had lied to her again, but at that moment, there was something far more important to be concerned about. It would be nice if the Doctor could be a bit more human about things, to let her know what he thought, but sometimes it didn't come naturally to him, and she really didn't actually want him to go away for good. He was clearly under a great deal of stress now, and maybe she could give him a bit of support, yes that was a good idea.
Clara got up and walked to the console room, but sadly for her he wasn't there. Maybe he was in the other TARDIS? Clara thought about walking across, but decided that perhaps it would be best to let the two Doctors sort this out together, and sadly returned to her room where she undressed and went back to bed, where she slept fitfully for the rest of the night.
"You want to send your TARDIS into the crack?" asked Eleven. "Do you think it will reset everything?"
"In the ideal scenario, yes, with everything rebooted back to where it should be."
"And if it goes wrong?"
"I presumably end up lost forever in the crack with my TARDIS, no way out."
"Would you be able to fly out with Amy?"
"I don't know. It sounds unlikely though, indeed I have no idea what the other side of the crack actually is. Nothingness I guess. Can you fly out of nothing?"
"No, that doesn't sound very hopeful."
"Another possibility is that everything is rebooted, but I still find myself stuck in the crack, on the other side."
"Yes, that's what happened to me after I rebooted the universe. Could we somehow get you out, by remembering you?"
"You, Amy and Rory wouldn't be here, you'd hopefully be back in your own time stream. Amy was able to remember me, as her mind was special, having grown up next to a crack. Clara, my Clara, I don't think she would have such powers. If I was lost, I'd almost certainly stay lost."
"I presume the crack wouldn't exist any more?"
"No, I imagine it would seal up with me on the other side."
Twelve sighed before continuing.
"It would reset all the time lines though. As I'm in your future, it would mean that you would eventually die at this point when you are me, but it's been a good innings. Amy and Rory would be brought back together, and once they leave you'll meet Clara as per the proper time lines."
"But what about Clara? What happens to her now?"
"Well you can take her home, you remember Coal Hill School don't you? She'll be upset for a bit, but she has a life to live, she's a tough old bird, she'll cope without the old man and the blue box."
"Are you sure there aren't any other options?"
"No. And it's my fault that your time line has been corrupted, I have to do whatever is necessary to rectify this."
The next morning, when Clara emerged, Twelve was waiting for her at his console desk.
"Ah, good morning Clara, did you sleep well?"
"A bit on and off" replied Clara warily, as he didn't usually greet her with small talk. "Did you go over to the other TARDIS last night?"
"Yes" replied Twelve slightly surprised. "Why?"
"I popped out to see how you were getting on, to see if I could help in any way, but you weren't there."
"Oh, er thanks. I had to see the crack for myself. After going through things with the other Doctor, we've worked out what we need to do, or rather what I need to do. It's probably best if we tell you and Rory at the same time. You might want to have some breakfast first."
Clara wasn't hungry, but forced down a piece of toast. Clearly they had decided on what to do, and Clara wasn't sure if she wanted to know…
In Eleven's TARDIS , Eleven let Rory sleep in, there was no need to drag him out of his room until it was necessary. Eventually he knocked on his door, after Twelve and Clara had arrived in his TARDIS.
When the sombre and tired looking Rory finally emerged, it was Twelve who spoke.
"Something terrible has happened here, due to my TARDIS colliding with your TARDIS. We've spoken, and decided that the only solution that might work is for me to fly my TARDIS into the crack."
"You're going to fly our, er your TARDIS into the crack?" replied the worried looking Clara.
"Yes, hopefully it will reset everything, and we'll all be back in our proper places, Amy will be back with Rory and the kittens will be back in the forest."
"Are you confident about this?"
"No."
"So what happens if it goes wrong?" exclaimed Rory.
"Rory" replied Eleven, "The worst case scenario is that nothing happens, and we have a TARDIS stuck in the crack as well."
"Could that TARDIS rescue Amy?"
"It's unlikely."
"So what other possible outcomes are there?"
"It's possible that the reset might work, but that the other TARDIS will be stuck on the other side of the crack after it heals up."
"You mean lost?" exclaimed Clara.
"Effectively" replied Twelve.
"But how could we then get it back?" added Rory.
"Rory" replied Eleven, "After all the time lines have reset, we won't remember any of this, none of these events will have happened to us. This will all be in my future."
"Distant future" added Twelve.
"But, you'd be gone forever!" replied Clara.
"Sadly yes. The other Doctor will be able to take you home. It slightly crosses the time lines but we should just about get away with it."
"But what about you?"
"Don't worry about me; I've had a good life. Besides, the plan might work!"
"But it might not." Clara eyes started getting moist as the consequences dawned on her.
"Well, no more old man and his blue box in that case. Besides, I've let you down Clara with my lies to you. As you said yourself, it's time for me to move on, to let you live your life. Maybe I'm no longer the Doctor in your eyes anyway."
"I, er I didn't really mean that" replied Clara, tears falling down her cheeks. "That's what I was going to say last night."
"Clara, I have no alternative if we are to bring Amy back. If you stay in the other TARDIS, you'll be safe though. The other Doctor can take you home afterwards, whether it works or not. You might want to move your stuff, as the sooner I do this the better."
And with that, a tearful Clara rushed back to her TARDIS.
An hour later a sombre Clara joined Rory and Eleven in his TARDIS, carrying a small bag with her possessions.
"I'm sure it will work" spoke Eleven trying to comfort Clara, "But better safe than sorry. You don't want to be stuck on the other side of the crack as well."
Clara said nothing, staring at the floor in a desperate attempt to keep herself together. She wouldn't let her Doctor see her upset, no she owed him that much.
Soon afterwards, Twelve emerged.
"I've programmed the coordinates in, the TARDIS was a bit confused by the prospect of effectively flying into itself, but we got there in the end."
Twelve then turned to Rory.
"We'll soon have Amy back, just stick in there, it been hard for you, but the nightmare will soon be over."
"I hope so" Rory sniffled back.
After grasping his hands, Twelve then shook Eleven by the hand.
"It's been good meeting you, fingers crossed and all that" spoke Eleven slowly.
"Hopefully this will have a happy ending. Look after Clara, she'll make you a fine Companion in due course."
At that comment, it all got too much for Clara, tears rolling down her cheeks at what was about to happen. Rory came across to comfort her as Twelve spoke.
"I guess it's goodbye then. Hopefully this will work, and everything will be set back to normal. My younger version will make sure you get home safely either way. It's been" Twelve swallowed, "A pleasure. Goodbye Clara."
"Goodbye Doctor.
Clara then watched as Twelve waved at her as he exited the TARDIS. She stood silently alone for a minute before suddenly running to the door.
"Sorry change of plan!" she exclaimed as she ran out of Eleven's TARDIS before he or Rory could react.
Twelve was busy making his final checks when to his astonishment Clara burst through the door and ran into his TARDIS.
"What are you doing here Clara?"
"I'm sorry Doctor, but I can't let you do this alone."
Twelve knows what he has to do, but Clara has other plans...
Thanks for the reviews. This tone of this story has changed a bit, but either way it's heading towards a conclusion!
