Chapter 4:

Athena's POV

Carefully I opened my eyes. My mouth felt dry and my eyelids heavy. I blinked several times. Woah, that was different indeed. It was as if my sight had always been bad, and trust me when I say I had pretty good sight. I went through my memories and all the pictures were as if they had been taken with a bad camera, if that was even a good enough description to tell what I saw. I sniffed and overwhelmed by the scents around I took the pillow as fast as I could and covered my face.

Wait. That was fast, I thought. I wonder how fast I can move, I added with a smirk.

I rushed out of bed and into the bathroom, however nothing seemed to go too fast as I moved, but somehow I knew that I was going faster than normal. I came to a stop as I looked myself in the mirror. I frowned. Yet again someone had bothered with my state of dress. I was in underwear. Then my eyes widened.

First of all I had blue flecks inside the purple of my irises. I already had a nice body, but now I was supermodel material (not that I could rival Rosalie). What stood out the most was that I looked to be taller than before.

"What the hell?" I mumbled to myself as I leaned a bit forward.

"Enjoying what you see?"

Rosalie's voice startled me and I turned. Barely registering that I heard talking from the first floor. Huh, that was strange.

"More like I'm surprised. I have vamp beauty," I said, my tone of voice teasing. I tilted my head. I replayed the memory and listened to my own voice.

"Everything about you is enhanced now," Rosalie said softly.

"You don't say," I muttered and scratched the back of my neck.

"Athena, may I fill you in on what happened while you were unconscious?" she wondered.

The surprise must have been very visible in my eyes. I mean, it was not like I expected her to act nice towards me. She smiled and gestured me out of the bathroom and to sit on the bed with her.

"Sure." I shrugged.

"How to start…" She looked to be thinking a bit. "Athena, how can you put it nicely to someone that they are not human?" she then wondered.

"Huh, that's a weird…Oh…" I. Am. Not. Human? Can my days just get any worse? "How do you know?" I then asked, pulling myself together.

"Alice had a hunch-"

"Wait, you mean she can't see me?" I asked wide-eyed.

She shook her head. "No, she can't."

And while she said that, I heard Alice saying that she couldn't.

My head tilted to the side.

"We brought you to a nearby stream and you changed." The last part was barely above a whisper and she took my right hand in hers in what was supposed to be a comforting gesture.

"I changed?" I asked, raising my eyebrows.

"You… You have a tail."

"I have a tail?" I felt my eyebrows rise.

"If you will let us, we believe we can prove it."

"Oh-kaay?"

"Come with me," she said and walked a step ahead as we made our way down the stairs. However, I had kind of forgotten that they had a swimming pool. So when we entered the room with the pool I felt myself get excited, but at the same time a little confused. "We have filled it with saltwater."

I met Rosalie's eyes. "Why?" I wondered.

"Step in," she urged and led me to the edge.

"Are you sure?" I asked skeptically.

"Just jump in already."

Emmett's voice startled me and I jumped forward. I could have swore I just heard him from another part of the house.

My body hit the water and I felt myself sink towards the bottom. A tingling sensation went through me and I tried to kick from the bottom so I would return to the surface.

Something was not right. My eyes shot open and the salt healed my eyes. I saw clearly and I looked down to my legs. Startled I yelped and drew in water, trying to breathe. I thought I would suffocate, however air filled my lungs and I drew in another breath.

I was breathing under water!

Once more I looked to where my legs would have been and took in the scales and well…tail.

How am I going to be able to swim? I wondered. I tried to move, but easily noticed that I was not used to this new development. I kept looking at the fin.

Move, I thought. And to my astonishment it did.

Maybe I should not have been so surprised, but try getting a tail yourself.

Again I thought of what I wanted and I saw it move me up as if it was the most natural thing ever.

My head came out of the water and I looked at the Cullens, which had gathered and was watching me.

"Believe me now?" Rosalie smirked.

I nodded. "Yes, I believe you." Their eyes seemed to glaze over for a moment and I stared at them very much confused. "Eh, guys?"

Carlisle was the first to snap out of it and looked at me excitedly. "It seems like the water enhance your voice even more, making it even more alluring. Even for vampires."

One by one they all came out of their daze as Carlisle spoke.

"A dangerous creature. Possible threat. We need to keep her a secret from the Volturi," he then said.

"I'm not dangerous! I don't even want to hurt anyone!" I protested.

"Alluring even vampires to a possible death is a threat to our race," Jasper pointed out, but added a small smile at the end. Really not what I expected.

My tongue went along my teeth and I felt fangs, not big, but they were there and I frowned. What was I supposed to use those for?

"I think I'm more vampire than you," I said and grinned. Showing off my fangs.

Emmett started to laugh. "Nice," he commented.

Rose rolled her eyes but she was grinning my way.

Alice was bouncing up and down, fairly excited. While Edward just stared at me.

Mine, a quiet whisper said in the back of my head. I shook it off and on the edge of the pool I used my arms to get up and sit on the edge. I lifted my tail out and almost at once legs were back in place.

At least my underwear is still on

"I bet you're hungry. Go take a shower and get dressed. I'll make you something to eat," Esme said. Her voice warm and her eyes inviting.

I smiled in thanks. Not thinking that I would step into water again.

I hurried to my room and into the bathroom. I undressed and stepped into the shower. I froze, nearly expecting to fall when the change would happened. I waited. Nothing. I breathed out in relief.

I tried to be as fast as possible, but drying my hair would truly take ages. I found clothes neatly made on my bed and I put them on before making my way.

The scents from the kitchen was truly a mix. It was a bit of everything. However, what I was drawn to was what consisted of fish and vegetables. The other things did not look appealing anymore and I felt a bit sad for Esme. Here she had bothered with so much and I only ate what was of fish. Nevertheless, I ate dessert. The brownies were truly delicious.

Again I added salt to my water when drinking. Rosalie came and wondered if I liked the clothes. She had picked them out. I smiled in thanks before making my way to the first floor. Quickly I figured out where Edward's piano stood. I hit a white key and listened as the sound went through the room. My finger was still pressed against it as I felt another presence join me.

"Do you play?" Edward's voice was smooth and I smiled as I recognized his scent.

"Mm-no. Even with a photographic memory, I was never really the one to play instruments. Sing, sure. Learning notes. No way. Somehow my brain just refused to learn them."

"But when you sing you follow notes," Edward pointed out.

"Not really. I follow the music. Or I look it up on youtube and listen to the song, after that I know more or less how it goes. As long as the melody is with me in my head, I know how to sing it. Remembering the text is not a problem. It is something else to actually use emotion and enter a role when singing. Personally I don't like performing though. I prefer to sing to myself at…home…"

"I see."

I tilted my head.

"What if I let you hear all the sounds of the keys while you look at them, then I will let you hear a song, and then we'll see if you grasped it."

"Is that so smart?" I asked, unsure.

"It can't be worse than singing for an audience," he teased.

"Oh, true," I muttered. Faintly noticing the daylight approaching.

Edward's POV

Athena was truly something of herself. She was different. Beautiful. Intriguing. Smart. In mind I bet I could go on. Most of all I wanted to keep hearing her beautiful voice. As she heard it now, it was how my family and I had heard it from the start. But everything else about her had truly been enhanced.

I felt strange to always want to be close to her, however her comment the first day had made Carlisle keep me away from her room for the most part. I shook my head a bit to myself. What I was feeling was absurd. I was not meant for such a beautiful creature. It could not be possible.

There it was again. I could swear I felt emotion from her, Jasper thought. I listened in a bit more.

It was almost the same as with Alice. They could get a piece of information now and then, but from that she was blocking them. Us.

Not even once had I gotten a glimpse of her thoughts and I wondered why.

Seeing her tail for a second time had made me want to step into the water with her. At first we thought she was drowning, but Carlisle had pointed out that since she was a mermaid it would probably not be a problem. Nevertheless, I could not not worry.

Then her voice. So alluring and so beautiful. It was almost like a song when she spoke from the water. However, my family hoped nothing similar would happen the next time. Indeed she could be a threat to the vampire race. At the same time it did not feel like that for me. If anything, the most important part would be to keep her a secret from the Volturi.

I heard her touch a key on the piano and I had made my way down the stairs. So she could sing? It was fitting. She was a mermaid after all.

Slowly I hit the keys for her, noticing that she was concentrated as she watched and listened. I moved aside and made space for her on the piano bench and she carefully sat down beside me.

Our arms touched and warmth went through me. The pull I felt got stronger and I wanted to lean in. Shaking my head, feeling annoyed with myself, I leaned the opposite way.

"Are you going to show me a song now?" I heard her ask. Her voice shaking me out of my thoughts. I smiled and nodded. Then I let my fingers flow.

When done I noticed her closed eyes and she opened them. She let her hands on the keys and then she closed her eyes again.

Slowly she let her fingers create the melody I had played for her. And as she noticed she got the hang of it she started to grin. Two fangs becoming visible and I could not help but smile as well.

I do not remember seeing him so carefree, I heard Esme think. I frowned and got up from the bench and rushed out the house. Leaving Athena alone. I ran, letting my legs carry me far and to the meadow. There I stopped and laid down.

A new day was approaching. A new day of school was coming.

It was wrong of me to think so lovely of Athena. We barely knew each other and we had barely spoken. At the same time, it was something about her. I could not stop my thoughts from going her way. It was impossible. No matter how hard I tried. From the moment we found her she made a big impact on our lives. All of us. Slowly all of us were changing. We could all feel it and it was no denying it. She was something out of the ordinary.

My phone buzzed and with a sigh, I took it up and read the text from Alice.

Carlisle already enrolled Athena into school, just in case. Remember we have to face Bella Swan again today. Somehow I have a feeling something is going to happen. However, I can't say for sure since Athena will be coming with us.

I quickly replied and asked how it was going to go since Athena had not slept.

She feels fine she says. More awake than she has ever felt. You know you could ask her yourself.

I rolled my eyes and sat up. Getting ready to start my way home.

Athena was something for herself, which was obvious. Neither was she human. She had to keep a secret like the rest of my family and I. She was interesting and another thing was that she seemed to not really like me and I had a feeling it had to do something about those books she talked about from the universe she came from.

I was determined to find out. I would find out.

Tell me what you think!
