Chapter 5:
3rd person POV
Athena stood by Rose's BMW and looked at it skeptically. She wanted Athena to drive with her while the rest would drive with Edward.
"Rose, are you sure? I don't want to stand out," Athena muttered as she looked at the car.
"You will stand out from the moment you get there, like the rest of us. Of course I'm sure. And don't worry. Carlisle made sure that your schedule will match with Edward's and the other way around."
"What is that supposed to mean?" Athena asked and raised a brow.
"You will have English, history, music, gym, lunch, biology and then a free period, since Edward got Spanish with Emmett."
"Oh… So what am I supposed to do while waiting?"
"Usually do homework. Either in the cafeteria or in the library."
"Okay, I think I can manage."
"Sure you will," Alice said as she came into the garage.
"So what is going to happen?" Emmett asked as he made his way over to Rose and briefly met her lips.
"I'm not completely sure. Since Athena is coming with us…" Alice started.
"I'm blocking your visions," Athena finished for her.
"Sorry," Alice said apologetically.
"I'm the one who's sorry."
"We better drive with caution. The roads are slippery," Edward said as he entered the garage and opened his Volvo.
Athena gasped. "Oh no!"
"What's wrong?" Edward rushed, gaining looks from his siblings. Noticing his slip he shook his head and frowned. Masking his face again.
"Tyler's van will slip on the ice at the school parking lot and head for Bella!" Athena rushed as she jumped into Rosalie's car. "We must make sure that she is not close to her truck when getting to school. The ideal scenario would make Alice approach her and walk towards school with her suggesting fashion or something to Bella. She prefers her style so she will most likely blow you off Alice. Which will give you an excuse to leave for your own class. When Tyler's van hit, it will only damage her car," Athena said so fast that it was a good thing the others were vampires, or they would have had a hard time keeping up.
"How do you…" Jasper started.
"It's in the book," Athena explained and a faint blush made an appearance on her cheeks.
"You never did tell us about them," Edward pointed out from inside the car.
"Well, time has pretty much been flying away from us. I can tell you some after school, if that is ok," Athena suggested.
The five vampires agreed and then they sped off to school.
Athena had never felt so out of place as they neared Forks High School. She knew the day was going to be a disaster and she really did not want to go. But what choice did she have? She could not just ditch them already. And it wasn't like she had any way of returning home. No, she had to go this all out until the end – and hopefully she would not end – no matter what it would take.
Taking a deep breath, she opened the door to Rose's BMW. It was time. Rose was the first to step out and they were already drawing attention. Not just the car, but Athena could hear the whispers as Rose led her towards the office. No one came towards her like they did with Bella. No one dared to come closer, but they sure could stare and they sure could gossip. She could hear most of it and she was not up to making many new friends. Ok, so maybe she was being strange and maybe even cruel and not giving them a chance, but it was not like she wanted to either. Most humans thought about themselves and she would not mix with them if she could avoid it.
Athena's eyes narrowed as she saw the orange truck arrive, then Alice who was skipping over towards it. So this would be the moment she would see Bella in the flesh.
"Come on, Athena," Rosalie said and frowned as she tried to gain the girl's attention.
Athena blinked as Rose squeezed her over normal human pressure. "What?" she asked and blinked. Bella's car door was about to open.
"Let's go, we do not have a moment to lose," Rose said.
"Er…right," she quietly agreed and followed after Rose.
Alice took one more look towards the office doors and approached Bella.
"Hello, Bella!" Alice said happily, nearly scaring the girl. Her eyes glazed over and she seemed confused for a moment. "Bella? May I ask you a question? I'm Alice by the way."
Bella nodded and frowned as they started walking. "So what did you want to ask me?" Bella wondered.
Then the screech came. Bella turned and Alice held her arm tightly. The van came so fast and flew right into her truck. Shocked she stood gaping, however, Alice tried making her go forward.
I could have been standing there, Bella thought horrified.
"Come on, Bella. Let's get to class," Alice rushed.
Right at that moment Rosalie and Athena came out and their way.
"Who're you?" Bella blurted as students ran past them towards Tyler's van.
"Athena Veronica, nice to meet you," Athena said. Face masked with an unreadable expression.
"Was that the best name you could come up with?" Alice whispered low enough for only Rose's and Athena's ears.
"Sorry," Rose whispered back.
"I've never seen you here before," Bella said skeptically.
"I'm new. I was adopted by Carlisle and Esme a week ago." Athena and the others had not really made much of a story yet. The town would know of her by the end of the day. Despite this, she would be quite the mystery to most.
"Who?… No one ever said-"
"It was kind of a surprise to most of us," Alice rushed and covered it up with a smile.
Oh, no, do not be more obvious than that… Athena thought and kept herself from rolling her eyes.
"Maybe we should check if Tyler is ok," Bella said slowly.
"Really? Seems like most of the school is there checking on him already," Athena commented.
Bella's eyes narrowed and so did Athena's.
"Athena," Rose said with a warning tone.
"Jazz! Edward!" Alice said happily, making both Athena and Bella look away.
"Hello ladies," Jasper said a bit stiff. When he neared them all and stood close to Athena and Alice, he visibly relaxed.
"Edward-" Bella started.
"Athena, I suggest we get to class, no point in getting late on your first day," Edward said and motioned for Athena to go first.
"Oh, sure." Athena looked one more time behind, noticing Bella glaring in her direction while Alice was grinning. Rosalie and Jasper had left as well. So this day would indeed get more and more interesting. Hopefully the school day would go better than what she thought.
I got rid of her. Bella's father came and wanted to speak to her. Going to class now. Alice's thought reflected in Edward's mind as he walked beside Athena. He had not failed to notice Bella's stare as they left and Jasper had felt some harsh emotions from her as well.
"Are you ok?" Athena asked.
Edward looked at her with surprise. "Why are you asking that?"
"She's your singer, isn't she?"
"Your presence has made it very easy for us to be around humans. I cannot smell any human's blood when around you, neither several hours after being in your presence. My family has it the same way. Sure we can smell scents, but no one smells edible," Edward explained lowly. Not sure if it was a good enough explanation.
"That's fairly interesting," Athena muttered lowly as they entered the classroom.
"Jasper is the most relieved-"
In that moment as he said it Athena suddenly remembered that Jasper usually could read all emotions, feel them… "I'm such a moron," she grumbled and hit her head.
"Don't hurt yourself," Edward said with a frown.
"Well, how could you all be so blind?" Athena hissed lowly. How could I forget? She thought to herself.
"What are you talking about?"
"Jasper's powers. No wonder he struggles more than you do. I mean, he feel all of his family's thirst as well as his own. If anything he might be the strongest out of all of you." The last she said with a bit of a smug tone making Edward's eyebrows raise.
"You mean…"
"It's exactly what I mean."
Edward groaned. "I can see what you mean." How did we never think about this? Any of us? He thought to himself.
The teacher stumbled in. "Ok, class…" He stared at the nearly empty classroom. "Hm, I see this will not be the most normal day. However, I take what I get. Please open up on page…"
The hours until lunch had literally dragged out, much to Athena's annoyance. But music class was not all too bad. At least she did not have to show off any skills. And as the day went on, more students returned as well.
Gym was funny. Especially since she had it with Emmett and Edward. To see them try to act human in that subject, well, priceless. Emmett especially. It was something called overdoing it, which was exactly what he was doing.
Together the three made their way to the cafeteria when the fourth period was over. She stood in line with them and took a look around. It was crowded enough. She bought a bottle of water and found a shrimp salad. Then she was looking around for salt. She did not find it and she felt her expression fall as they made their way over to the 'Cullen table' or so she would guess.
As she sat down Rosalie made three bags of salt glide their way over the table and over to her. "I had a feeling you would want it," she said with a wink.
"Thanks, you have no idea," Athena muttered as she opened the bottle and started to pour the salt in.
"They are whispering again," Emmett said with a frown. Concerned for Athena.
"Let them whisper. I mean, from where I came from, they did it as well. Sure, I could not exactly always hear it, but it was no secret. To them I was a freak."
"Are you sure you are ok?" Jasper wondered.
"Relax, I learned to live with it a long time ago. This is no different," Athena reassured. Well, except that I'm sort of a mermaid…
Edward looked over to Jessica's mind. She was staring at Bella and Bella was staring at their table. Still nothing, he thought as he looked at Bella once. His attention shifted and he met Jasper's eyes.
I swear I just felt it, Edward. She's pissed for some reason, Jasper thought.
"Here comes Bella," Rosalie hissed lowly.
She made her way over slowly. Athena could hear every step. She almost had the urge to get up and rip her throat out as she came closer. Another swallow of her salad.
"Come on, Bella. They're busy," Jessica whispered nervously.
The steps stopped. Then they turned and the steps went another way and faded with them.
Athena visibly relaxed and unclenched her jaw. The other Cullen siblings relaxed again and started talking quietly between themselves.
She met Edward's eyes briefly. He lifted an eyebrow; she did the same in response. Neither said a word.
"Shouldn't you two get to class?" Rose asked as she got up to leave.
"Ah, you're right," Edward muttered and got up, waiting for Athena to do so as well. She faintly nodded and got up.
Walking together to biology, well, Athena was not sure how she was supposed to feel. She had this anger inside her that she simply could not explain. Of course it only had to get worse when she saw Bella again in class. She approached Mr. Banner together with Edward. Requesting if she could sit beside him. Since she was new and newly adopted, they managed. They went the row behind Bella. Athena sat by the window while Edward kept his gaze on her. Bella faintly turned her head and met her eyes. Athena's eyes narrowed making her turn again. Satisfied she turned her gaze to Edward.
"What?" she asked.
"What's going on?" he whispered. Only for her ears.
"I have no idea what you're talking about," she mumbled in reply, but with a ghostly smile.
"So why are your eyes trying to kill Bella?" he wondered.
"Like I said…" She smiled wider. "No idea what you're talking about." She turned and faced forward as Mr. Banner started the class.
What is wrong with me? She thought and just let her brain capture what she saw as she focused on her own thoughts. I've never been a specially hating person. Neither did I ever really want to hurt anymore, let alone kill. Right now I am not surprised if I'm able to hurt Bella. Nope, I am not like myself…
Edward kept watching her throughout class. Wondering what was going on with their new family member. …let alone kill… His eyes widened. Had he just… He had! Alice and Jasper were not the only ones getting glimpses anymore. He could not help the smile that graced his lips with the discovery. At the same time he was wondering about what she had been thinking indeed. His head went a bit to the side, he caught a glimpse of her eyes, and for a brief moment they glowed silver. However it went so fast that he almost missed it.
"Athena?" Mr. Banner asked, making her stiffen and react at once.
Edward barely listened as she answered the teacher. He listened to her two heartbeats. One heart was beating faster than the other one; he raised a brow, mainly to himself. What was going on with her?
Stupid teacher, Athena thought angrily. He thought he could fool me, but I sure showed him!
The class ended and she got up together with Edward and they left class. She muttered quietly that she would go sit in the library if she found it. She did in the end and sat down in a more secluded area. She sat there for the remaining period. She had quickly finished her homework, the rest of the time she had been thinking of what she would tell about the books.
For starters I can tell them the basics around Twilight, she thought and got up as the bell rung. She hurried up and rushed out towards Rose's car.
The impact hit her straight on her chest on her left side above her hearts. Air forced out of her and she fell backwards as did the one she crashed into.
Her eyes opened and she glared at the one who had ran straight into her with books in hand. It was none other than Bella.
"You!" They both exclaimed at the same time.
However, Athena was rubbing her left side where the impact hit. It actually hurt. Athena helped herself up and jasper came running her way.
"Athena! Are you ok?" he wondered.
"What about me?" they both heard Bella huff.
"Yeah, I think I am," Athena whispered, but kept rubbing the spot.
"Let's get you home," he said, his tone worried.
Athena did not respond and she was met with worried vampires.
Tell me what you think!
