Kyle XY Season 4

Chapter 5

Kyle: [I would be lying if I said the idea of Zyzzyx up and running again wasn't driving me crazy; it's all I've been able to think about since Jesse and I had seen that SUV headed towards the once thriving laboratory. What if Latnok already has the research up and running again? I was naïve to think sabotaging the clones would hinder the group from their pursuits in creating the perfect human specimen… More and more I'm finding myself afraid for what the future held for the ones I love. Grace Kingsly obviously isn't afraid to use any means necessary to achieve her goals… but what does that mean for those around me? How was I expected to fight when it wasn't only my life one the line…?]

The Tragers sat around the dinner table like any other night of the week. There was plenty of conversation going on around them, but neither Kyle nor Jesse heard a word of it.

Kyle sat there pushing his carrots around with his fork and watched as Jessie plopped a sizable piece of pot roast into her mouth.

[K: What are we going to do Jessie?]

Jessie paused at Kyle's voice in her head and looked up at him. She watched as he searched her face for any sign she might have an answer to his question. Jessie hated not being able to have all the answers.

[J: I'm not entirely sure what our next move should be… We definitely have to head back to Zyzzyx and check it out. If Latnok's new base is out there then that's where they would be holding Foss…] Jessie supplied her thoughts on the matter.

Kyle paused for a minute and looked back to his uneaten dinner. [K: I think we're going to need to bring Declan in to this…] Kyle hated himself for suggestion it, but Declan was his closest friend and they needed all the help they could get if they were going to keep the Trager's out of a mess of his making.

Jessie watched Kyle for a minute and said nothing until he looked up at her wondering why she'd been so quiet. Jessie had liked the two man team they had become… she didn't want to bring in a third to ruin the harmony between them… but she knew what Foss meant to Kyle… almost as much as Kyle had meant to her.

[J: Are you sure that's a good idea? … I mean do you really want to bring him back into this life if you don't have to?]

Kyle knew Jessie was right… but Foss was an important member of Kyle's family; he had saved Kyle numerous times. Kyle also knew what it meant to bring Declan back into Kyle and Jessie's never ending battle, but if he didn't tell Declan what was going on Kyle knew Declan wouldn't forgive him. Kyle had tried to keep it a secret before and it ended up blowing up in his face…

[K: I don't think we have a choice… We're going to need all the help we can get if we're going up against Grace Kingsly…] Kyle shuddered at the thought he might be related to someone like Grace and Cassidy; they had no idea what the word family meant.]

[J: How much trouble can one woman be? Even with her resources, between the two of us, we're unstoppable.]

"Whoa that's some intense staring going on there," Josh's voice interrupted their private conversation.

Kyle hadn't realized how intently he'd been watching Jessie until she looked up from her plate at Josh's words. Her hazel eyes searched his face as if asking Kyle to think quickly of an excuse. The mental link broken Kyle looked to Josh in surprise. "What?" he asked.

"Dude, you've been staring at Jessie with this intense look on your face for like 5 minutes…" Josh answered shoving another spoonful of mashed potatoes into his face.

"I didn't realize…" Kyle answered. "I was just thinking about something and must have gotten lost in the thought. Jessie just happened to be in my line of sight."

"Is everything ok Kyle?" Nicole asked, concern practically dripping from her words.

Kyle smiled, trying to reassure his adoptive mother that he was alright. "Yeah," he tried to sound sincere. "Just trying to come up with the answer to an equation Mark was working on. No big deal."

Nicole didn't look entirely convinced but the answer seemed to appease her for now.

"You should eat more and think less," Nicole suggested. "You haven't touched a single thing on your plate.

Kyle smiled. "You're right." He grabbed a couple of carrots with his fork and popped them in his mouth.

[J: Nice save.]

Kyle glanced at Jessie who was taking another bite of pot roast, a small smirk playing across her face. Kyle grinned back. He tried to join in on the conversation as much as possible to throw their suspicions off. Kyle sat there and shoveled bite after bite into his mouth, all the while thinking about Jessie. The girl that sat in front of him seemed so calm, and it made him wish he could be as sure as she was. Kyle couldn't be calm though, he had heard it in Grace's voice… the woman was not afraid to use any means necessary to get what she wanted.

It was Jessie's turn to watch Kyle this time and she wondered if he knew that his best and worst trait was the same… that he wore his heart on his sleeve. Though Jessie wished she had half as much compassion for people as Kyle did, she knew that as long as he cared, he would be in danger. Jessie worried about Kyle and wondered if everything would really be alright…

"Are you sure you're feeling alright?" Nicole asked Kyle; apparently her mom radar was extra sensitive today.

"Yeah, just not that hungry… Jessie and I had stopped by the rack and grabbed a couple of sandwiches around five; I'm still a bit full from that." Kyle smiled, trying to, again, reassure a concerned Nicole.

"Yeah, I was starving earlier so we stopped there," Jessie offered. "I just burn my food a lot faster than Kyle does. She paused and looked to Kyle. "You really should be more active Kyle. I go running every day after school, you should join me." Jessie took a bite of pot roast between sentences. "I mean you're going to get fat if you don't keep active. No more burning calories while chasing Latnok…"

Kyle's eyes widened at the mention of Latnok; it always surprised him how good Jessie was at lying.

"Uh yeah," Kyle went along with it. "That second milkshake was probably a bad idea…"

"Jessie, you shouldn't say 'fat' like that…" Nicole interjected.

Jessie looked at Nicole. "Am I wrong?" she asked.

"Well, no…" Nicole answered.

"I think she meant there are nicer ways to say it… with a bit more tact," Kyle smirked.

Jessie looked at the family around her and just asked honestly, "When have you ever known me to be tactful?"

There was a few seconds of silence before Lori stated, "Well, she's not wrong…"

Everyone either smirked or chuckled, either way they didn't seem suspicious of what was really going… and though it hurt him to lie to his family, he knew it was only in order to keep them safe.
