CHAPTER FOUR

"What about all the windows? I've seen corpses break glass so easily." Mel asks looking up from drawing plans for the bus that is in the middle of the kitchen table.

"Maybe welding rebar, grates or steel rods, so we can open the windows, it will get to hot otherwise." Charlie said before crossing his arms and looking over to Eva.

She nods her head before adding rebar, grates, steel rods, blow torches and welding masks to the ever growing list of supplies they need. "We will also need a lot of paint, school bus yellow can be seen for miles. We will need to camouflage it." She said as she writes down paint and paintbrushes.

"There is a hardware store and art and crafts store in town, it should have more than we need." Abigail says as she marks the places on the town map Kailee found as they searched the house that morning.

"Ok while Jenna, Cody and I, are out checking the surrounding farms for supplies, I want you and the girls boarding up the windows as much as you can. You and I will go into town in a day or two to get the rest of the supplies." She tells Charlie as she rolls up the bus plans and puts them into one of the bags.

He nods his head and he and the girls make their way out side to start on boarding the windows. As Jenna and Cody go to get their stuff Eva looks over at Abigail. "I'll bring him back, all you guys are family now and I'll keep him safe." Eva says as she leans over the back of the chair and wraps her arms around her. Abagail laughs before kissing Eva arm and pats it before Eva lets her go after kissing her cheek.

"Ok wood, nails, tools and anything else we can use. Cody, I want you on watch come and get me and Jenna if you see anything, I don't care if it's just one." She says looking from Jenna to Cody as they stand in front of a two story farm house that is a little far from their own.

Jenna and Eva then start loading all the boards that were piled in the barn into a brown ford pickup, which was already at the farm. As Eva moves the last few boards into the bed of the truck, Jenna goes around the barn grabbing all the tools they might ever need.

Jenna drives the truck up to the house so she can get started on scavenging the house. Eva walks over to the outdoor shed to check for anything useful. Finding nothing but junk, Eva jogs over to the house to help Jenna, hopefully they can find some things in the house.

She waves to Cody, who is sitting on the roof of her truck keeping watch, before going in the house. "Nothing but junk in the basement, only found a few cans of food in the kitchen." Jenna said shaking her bag pack. "You check up stairs yet?" Eva asks her and Jenna shakes her head. "Was just about to when you came in."

Eva goes into the bathroom while Jenna goes into one of the bedrooms. Eva packs up the band aids and q-tips and the few rolls of toilet paper before walking back into the hall.

She starts walking to the next room when she hears someone walking up the steps. She turns to see a one armed woman, who is missing most of her face slowly walking up the steps.

She runs and kicks the corpse in the chest, screaming for Jenna as she watches the corpse fall down the steps to the feet of several more corpses.

Eva turns and pushes Jenna back into the room she was coming out of and she slams the door closed behind her. "The window, go, go, go!" She yells before pushing a small dresser in front of the door to give them more time.

She runs to the window and climbs out onto the awning before grabbing Jenna's hand and they start carefully walking around the house to get to the front near the cars.

All the while they see several walkers milling around the back of the property. "Cody!" Eva yells and she watches him turn around looking around for her. "Get the other truck." She yells and watches him jump off her truck and get into the other before turning to Jenna.

"We need to jump." She says as she takes of her bag and drops it down to the ground before doing the same with her bow. Jenna throws her bag over before following Eva by sitting down and they rolls over onto their stomachs before sliding off.

Jenna's foot catches the railing wrong and she goes flying back which makes her fall on her arm wrong. Eva jumps down missing the railing completely but she ignores the pain in her leg as she picks Jenna up by her waist.

Jenna tries really hard to not scream as pain shoots through her whole arm but she can't help it as Eva lifts her body up off the ground. Eva grabs their bags and her bow before limping with Jenna over to her truck she opens the door and helps Jenna inside before throwing the bags and her bow into the backseat.

After she closes the back down she sees the corpses have noticed them and are surrounding them. She pulls out her gun and limps as fast as she can around the front of the truck shooting two corpses that were getting to close.

She jumps in and starts the truck before taking off behind Cody. She honks her horn when she sees that he is going right back to the others he slows down and she pulls up next to him.

"Not straight back, they will just follow us back to the farm." She tells him trying to catch her breath and he nods his head looking scared out of his mind before letting her pull ahead so he can follow her.

"I think it's broke." Jenna sobs as she cradles her arm close to her. "We will be back to the farm soon just hang in there ok." Eva tells her while turning down another back street taking the long way back to the others.

"Oh Christ." Rick whispers to himself when he sees twenty or more walkers come walking around the over turned semi-truck with many more following. He turns and crouches down while running over to where Lori is going through things in the back of a van.

"Lori, under the cars!" He whispers loudly which gets her attention and she immediately drops down before moving over to Carol. "Carl, Sophia get down now." Rick says as he motions his hand down to the ground and they both drop down and start crawling underneath the cars they were beside.

Rick follows and drops to the ground and crawls underneath a truck and he looks over and holds his hand up to Carl and Sophia telling them to stay and keep quiet.

It feels like hours as hundreds of walkers keep passing by but it really was only several minutes. Rick sighs with some relief when no more walkers come stumbling by. But that relief soon turns to horror as Sophia starts to crawl out from underneath the car just for a walker to see her.

Rick does not hesitate as he quickly gets up and chases after Sophia and the two walkers that are after her. He tumbles down the small slope and stands up and sees Sophia running by with the walkers quickly following her.

He starts running in parallel with them and after she falls to the ground he grabs her when she gets up covering her mouth when she starts to scream. "Shh. Are you alright are you ok?" He whispers to her as he looks her over.

"Shoot them, shoot them!" She cries out trying to grab his gun but he grabs her arm and pulls it away. "No. No! Those walkers on the road would hear it. Then it wouldn't be just two, it'd be hundreds. Come here, come on." Rick whispers before picking her up and running off when the walkers come out from around a tree, not too far away.

"All right, just hold here, you stay there." He said to Sophia when they come to a creek with a small hill. He sets her down before jumping down into the water before holding his arms out to her.

He sets her on his hip looking around desperately for a place for them to hide. He sees a small alcove just big enough for her and he knows that he has to leave her here so he can kill those walkers that are drawing closer. "Sophia you have to do exactly as I say. Hide in there squeeze in tight. I'll draw them away from you."

"No, no, don't leave me." She cries shaking her head. His chest hurts hearing her cry like that. "Listen, listen, they don't get winded, I do. I can only deal with them one at a time. I wouldn't be able to protect you. This is how we both survive. You understand?" Rick tells her and she keeps nodding her head and he lightly pushes her into the alcove and watches her push as far back as she can go.

He looks up and sees the two walkers finally notching him and he turns back to see her shaking and so crying. "If I don't make it back, run to the highway, back to the others, straight the way we came. Keep the sun on your left shoulder." He tells her and she nods her head again before he looks up at the walkers.

"Come on!" Rick yells egging them on, keeping their attention on him. He bends down and splashes water up at them. "You ugly son of a bitch. Come on!" He yells again and one of the walkers falls down into the water and Rick backs away yelling at them and kicking water at him, as the other walks around the top of the hill towards him.

He looks one more time at Sophia before turning around and running away, the two walkers following closely behind him.

Eva ties another rabbit next to others and the few squirrels she has caught. She starts limping back to the farm when she notices the sun going farther down.

She stops and looks around her when she hears the sound of someone screaming close by, she doesn't hesitate before taking off after the screams.

She stops running when she sees a small girl running from three corpses, she draws her bow before hitting the closet one to the girl. "Hey over here!" She yells which gets the attention of both the girl and the two last walkers.

The girl runs towards her as Eva hits the next corpse, the girl barrels into and hugs her around the waist which makes her miss the last one. She draws again and lets the arrow fly hitting the woman right between the eyes.

She drops her bow to the ground and grabs the girls face making her look up at her. "Are you ok, are you bit or scratched?" Eva says as she kneels in front of her checking her arms and legs making sure. The girl just shakes her head before throwing her arms around her neck and hugs her tight as she cries.

"Oh sweetheart it's ok, it's ok I got you. What's your name, mine's Eva." She says while looking over the girls shoulder making sure no corpses were following the others.

"Sophia... my name's Sophia." The girl sobs before passing out in Eva's arms. She lays Sophia down on the ground softly before grabbing her arrows from the dead corpses and throws her bow over her shoulder before picking up the girl. She holds the girl in her arms and her gun in hand as she limps slowly back to the house.

"Ya'll gonna follow the creek bed back. Ok, Daryl you're in charge." Shane said as they all gather around the shade of the tree that is near the church. "Me and Rick are just gonna hang back. Search this area another hour or so just to be thorough." Shane tells them and Daryl couldn't believe it.

"You're splitting us up. You sure?" He asks Shane as he looks from Shane to Rick. "Yeah, we'll catch up to you." Shane says to them. "I want to stay too. I'm her friend." The boy, Carl said looking up to Rick and Shane.

Rick just looks at Lori silently saying it's up to her. "Just be careful ok." Lori says after sighing. "I will." Carl tells her and she grabs his face and kisses the top of his head as she hugs him. "When did you start growing up?" She laughs lightly before letting him go and turning to Rick and she kisses him before pulling him close.

"Here take this, remember how to use It?" Rick says as he holds out his gun to her. "I'm not taking your gun and leaving you unarmed." Lori said shaking her head and Daryl bites his lip before pulling out the gun he just got off of the dead man in the tent.

"Here, got a spare, take it." Daryl said to her holding out the gun and she takes it and Daryl gives a nod to Rick who's nods back in a sign of thanks. Daryl walks past and move to the front of the group and they start walking back to the highway all of them quietly praying they find Sophia on the way.
