CHAPTER NINE
Eva lets her arrow fly and watches the walkers head snap back before falling to the ground with a thud. She looks over at Charlie and Cody before making her way over to the two walkers that stumbled into the fields.
"Well it's only these two but let's checks around the farm and makes sure the barns clear before shutting it up and have everyone stay in the house." Eva says as she yanks out her arrows from the walkers heads and she wipes the blood off on one of the walker's shirt before placing them back in their quiver.
She, Charlie and Cody walk the property before checking the barn, before making their way back to the house. After telling everyone what happened Eva starts packing up her bag so she can go and check to see if Sophia's group has replied yet.
Eva parks the truck and uses the binoculars to check the last spot she told them to reply at. She shakes her head before placing the binoculars back in her bag before starting back to the farm. She can't get discouraged, it has only been one day since they taped them up.
After getting back and when Sophia's face drops when Eva tells her not today, it hurts Eva's chest. Eva shakes her head at Charlie as they watch Sophia walk up the stairs crying softly.
"I need to do something, can't just sit here. I'm going to go hunt, see if I can't find something." Eva said grabbing her bag pack and bow before leaving the house not even looking back at them.
She has been walking for over an hour, she caught two rabbits and a few squirrels. She looks down at her watch to see it is nearing three o'clock, she stops and turns in a different direction starting her way back to the farm.
She starts getting closer to some boulders when she hears footsteps and grumbling coming from behind the rocks. She notches an arrow before slowly starting to make her way back the way she came.
She stops suddenly when four men, four alive men come walking around the boulders. They all stop and stare at her, who she guess is the leader steps forward with is hands up with a smile on his face.
"Get her!"

"You coming?" Shane asks him but he doesn't think he can be around them all, he almost spilled it three times this morning. "No, I got to help clean the spark plugs on the RV." Glenn tells him trying to act natural.
"Dale said he's gonna teach me mechanics. I should go and look for him." He said trying to back away. "You found me." Dale says from behind him, startling him.
He looks to Dale hoping he won't blow it with Shane standing there. "He's a good learner." Dale says and Shane just shakes his head before getting in the car and driving off. "Spark plugs, huh?" Dale says and he knows he has been caught, he never was good at lying.
"Want to tell me what's going on?" Dale asks him and he sighs before turning and facing him fully. "You're old, I mean you know things. So if somebody told you something that somebody else should know..." He says trying not to give it away but he knows he won't be able to.
"Glenn stop being dramatic. Spit it out." Dale says getting impatient. "There's... there are walkers in the barn and Lori's pregnant." Glenn tells him looking Dale in his eyes.

Eva limps as she jogs away from all the blood and walkers, trying to ignore the pain in her thigh from the gunshot wound. She pants as she leans against the side of a tree and she looks down the road to see a few parked cars, hopefully one of them still runs and will get her back to town.
She doesn't know how far she has been running, running from the men and then the walkers. She finds one of the cars with its keys and she turns the keys and when the engine starts she laughs a little before shutting the door and shifting to drive and she takes off back to town following the compass that is on her watch.
About a half mile away from the farm the car breaks down. She grabs her bow and starts limping as fast as she can back to the farm, not wanting to be out with blood all over her and a wounded leg.
As she starts walking to the house she holds up her bow, last thing she needs is them to mistake her for a walker. When she sees the door open and they come running to her, they start getting blurrier by the second and Eva falls to her hands and knees.
She hears them calling her name but it's like she is underwater and they sound further and further away. She stays awake long enough to feel Charlie and Cody picking her up and they start dragging her back to the house.
She can hear Charlie yelling orders before her head falls forward and the pain finally gets to be too much for her and she passes out, in the safe arms of her family.

"Maggie I..." Glenn said trying to apologize again. "I asked for your trust and you betrayed it." Maggie said cutting him off. "Now my dad's pissed at me. Your turn." She said ridding the horse along.
"So your dad thinks there sick?" He asked remembering what Dale told him about Hershel when Dale asked about the barn. "You agree with that, even after what you saw at the well?" Glenn asks her as the hop off the horses to tie them up.
"I'm not sure what I saw at the well." She says to him but he shakes his head. "Yes you are. Look if you'd seen Atlanta, you would not have a barn full of walkers." Glenn says trying to get her to see what he means.
"I wish you would stop calling them that." Maggie snaps at him as she starts tying the rope to the poll. "What do you call them?" He asks her confused. "Mom, Shawn, Mr. and Mrs. Fischer, Lacey, Duncan." Maggie tells him before going into the pharmacy, he knew her mom and brother died but not that they were bit.
"What does she want now?" She asks him and him as looks over one of the selves. "I can't say." He says and he hears her scoff behind him. "So when one of them asks you to keep your mouth shut..."
"Crawl out of my butt and help me look, please." He says cutting her off and hands her Lori's note. She reads the note before walking away in a huff. "You've got to be kidding me." She says and he looks after her in confusion before picking up a hand basket and starts throwing anything useful into it.
"Help! Glenn! Help!" He hears Maggie screaming from the back so he takes off running. "Maggie!" He yells before grabbing a metal self and he hops on top of the counter and swings at the walker. He cuts through half of its head and it lets go of Maggie and falls to the ground.
"Did it get you! Did it bite you!" He asks her hurriedly before pulling her into his arms holding her up as she cries and shakes.
"Glenn!" She yells and he turns around and sees the walker standing up his head half falling off to the side, he takes out his machete and slams it into his head and pulls it out as the walker falls back down.
Not wanting to take another chance he stands over him and hits it over and over and over before going back to Maggie and holding her close.

"You have to hold her down harder she can't be moving!" Charlie yells looking over at Cody who is holding both her legs down. "Ahhh! Stop please!" Eva screams trying to jerk away as Charlie tried to get the bullet out again but she can't be moving.
"Bite on this." Abigail says holding a folded hand towel over Eva mouth and Eva cries before opening her mouth and biting down on the towel.
Jenna and Mel run back into the room carrying the med bags and Kailee comes from the kitchen with a bowl of hot clean water. "Kailee, Mel you have to hold her arms down she can't move, Jenna hold her stomach down, Abigail put a towel under her head and start getting the stiches ready." Charlie ordered while wiping the blood off of the surrounding wound to get a better look at it.
"I see the bullet, it's not too deep. Eva you can't move or I'll cut an artery, you have to hold still." Charlie said leaning over the table so his face is above Eva's, he places his hand on the side of her bloody and bruised face. She cries and pants into the towel and she nods her head.
She moves her head to stare up at the ceiling and she gives Kailee and Mel her arms and the both hold her arms down to the kitchen table beside her head. Charlie picks up the tweezers and places his other hand on her knee.
He looks around at everyone and gives them all a nod and the start holding her down tighter and Eva takes in a deep breath through her nose. Charlie tries blocking out Eva's muffled screams as he digs out the bullet.
She sighs when the bullet finally comes out, and Jenna pulls the towel from Eva mouth and Eva starts taking in deep breaths, sobs shaking her whole body.
"Ok, let's get this cleaned and stitched and then you girls can get her cleaned up, then we well get her to bed. She'll take my bed down here and the boys and Sophia will stay with Kailee and Mel ok." Charlie tells them and they just nod theirs head, all of them having a hard time ignoring the blood that is covering all of their hands and clothes.
After getting her leg stitched he and Cody leave the kitchen so the woman can clean Eva up, he has Cody go on watch, her blood will surely draw some walkers in.
He walks into the bathroom and starts washing the blood off of his hands and arms. He looks up into to mirror and holds back a sob when he sees the blood smeared over his face. He changes out of his bloody clothes before walking upstairs where he can hear the kids crying.
When he walks into the room he sees Sophia holding the boy as they cry on the bed. He picks the baby up out of the crib before sitting down with his back on the headboard, and he pulls the kids to him.
After a while the boy and Sophia fall fast to sleep and Charlie sits there rocking the baby, shaking his head from the flashes of what just happened down stairs.
He looks to the door and sees Kailee slowly walking into the room. His scared and tired grandbaby walks over and takes the sleeping baby from his arms. He stands up and pulls her into his arms and he can feel her shaking.
He kisses the side of her head when Mel and Jenna walk into the room. Mel wakes up Sophia and takes her hand and takes her down the hall to her and Kailee's rooms. Charlee picks up the boy and he and Kailee walk out of the room, while Jenna grabs Eva a change of clothes.
After Eva is all cleaned up and changed he and Cody help carry her into his room and after laying her down on the bed she falls right to sleep, from exhaustion and the pain killers.
He walks silently back into the kitchen and he grabs a bucket and fills it with water and he grabs a rag and some soap. He starts scrubbing the table and he looks up when the girls and Cody walk into the kitchen carrying towels.
They all start cleaning in silence, washing the blood away, picking up Eva ruined clothes and the med supplies. He takes the bucket back to the kitchen and dumps the red soapy water in the sink and as he refills it up he looks over and watches Abigail wiping down Eva's bow. She has already cleaned Eva's gun and machete, she just has to clean Eva's quivers and belts.
He pats Abigail's shoulder before taking the bucket to the living room. He gets down on the floor, ignoring the ache in his knees and he starts scrubbing the blood trial that leads from the door to the kitchen.

"You threw up the pills. You want this baby I know you do." Rick said looking to Lori and she shakes her head. "Not like this. Not giving birth in a ditch. Not when its life will hang by a tread from the second it's born. Not when every cry will put it and Carl and everyone we care about in danger. That's not right." She tells him and he rubs his forehead trying to ease some of the headache that he has.
"Not even giving it a chance is not right either." He says walking back up to her. "This is why I didn't want to tell you." She says wiping sweat of her forehead. "I still... I still don't understand why." He says trying to get her to tell him why. "You really think I would make you have a baby you didn't want?" He asks her still confused.
"No, so that if I went through with it, it would be on my conscience and not yours." She tells him and he nods his head before taking a step back. "Maybe that's true. But I can't live like this anymore, we can't live like this. Is there anything else I should know about?" He asks her and he waits and she looks up at him with a look of guilt in her eyes.
"Shane and I..." She tells him and he nods his head he knew this but hearing her say it aloud made it more real. "I know, of course I know." He says before moving away and he leans against the fence he looks out into the field that surrounds the farm.

It is very late in the night and two of them are always on watch, one looking for walkers and the other on Eva and the kids who keep waking from nightmares.
It's one o'clock in the morning when Jenna wakes him up for his shift. After sitting up from the couch he gets up and goes to the bathroom. He grabs a granola bar and a water from the kitchen, ignoring the blood stains on the floor and table that won't come out.
He makes his rounds around the house checking in on everyone before nodding over at Mel who is taking her first night shift. He walks into his room and sees Eva lying their staring at the ceiling. He slowly walks over and grabs the desk chair and he sets it down beside the bed.
"There was four of em... they just attacked... didn't even talk to me first." Eva said her voice all scratchy from screaming so much. Charlie lifts her head and helps her drink some water after he sees her staring at the water bottle.
"They caught me... started grabbing... grabbing at me." Eva said starting chocking up tears in her eyes. Charlie shakes his head and he grabs her hand and she holds back tighter.
"They said the group will like me a lot, have a lot of fight in me... that I'd be fun to break." She said her voice cracking she shakes her head lightly. "They have a bigger group nearby there, they were on foot. There's a bad camp nearby us Charlie, a really bad group." She whispers to him as she finally looks away from the ceiling and over to him.
"The bus is about done and you need time to heal. So let's give it a few days and then we'll talk about moving ok." Charlie tells her and she nods her head tiredly before closing her eyes, falling back to sleep.
Charlie sits there and holds her hand until Mel comes to switch places with him. He holds Mel close to him, the girl is like another granddaughter to him. He kisses the side of her head before walking to the living room to start watch.
He stands there staring out the window only moving to the back of the house to look out back every half hour. He does this until the sun comes up not being able to fall back to sleep, Eva's words about what happened and the echoes of her pained screams keeping him awake.
