AUTHOR'S NOTE: BEFORE YOU READ ON AHEAD, GO LOOK UP ROSE COLORS AND THEIR MEANINGS! ;)
Elsa stood in front of her full body mirror. She sported a pair of dark-shaded jeans with a light blue, lacy tank top. She wore white gladiator sandals, and her makeup was done like on her graduation. Her hair was down in a single braid and to top it off she had a small snowflake necklace around her neck. Despite looking stunning, she frowned at her reflection.
"It seems like too much." She muttered.
"Are you kidding?" Elsa jumped and looked over at her door, Anna leaning against the frame. "You look hot."
Elsa blushed and looked back at her reflection. "I'm just not sure about this, Anna."
Her little sister walked up and stood next to her, her reflection joining beside hers. "You're gonna be fine. Like you said, it's just a date."
Elsa shook her head. "I still can't believe you talked me into this."
"Technically, Gregor talked you into it."
"And who called him?"
"I called Kristoff."
Elsa shot her a look. "You know what I mean." She said a little irritated.
Anna sighed and gave a small smile. "I am sorry. I didn't exactly think before I dialed. I just had the idea and had to act on it."
Elsa rolled her eyes at her impulsiveness. Anna grinned in response and then massaged her left shoulder. She winced. "Yeah, you definitely gave me a bruise."
Elsa gently placed a hand where Anna was rubbing. "Sorry," She apologized. "I didn't think I pinned you that hard."
"You're really strong, Elsa." Anna pointed out. "But I deserved it."
"Why are you so adamant I go on a date anyway?"
Her sister moved closer and wrapped one arm around her shoulders. "I told you, I want you to be happy. Not to mention, you're twenty-two and never been on a date. You're overdue."
Elsa opened her mouth to argue Anna's not so sound logic. Before she could, she heard the buzzer for their apartment. She jumped and then made her way to the intercom. She pushed the left button and spoke.
"Who is it?" She had an idea, but you can never be too sure.
"It's Gregor." The man replied into the speaker.
Elsa smiled despite feeling like her heart was beating a mile a minute. Next thing she knew she could be shaking like a leaf. She willed herself to calm down. "Come in." She responded and then pressed the far right button to buzz him in.
Not too long after there was a soft knock at their door. Anna peeked through the peephole before answering with a wide grin.
"Hey, Greg! How have you been?"
The man walked in dressed in jeans with a peach button-up. Over that was a brown blazer and in his hand he held a small bouquet of flowers. Bonus points already. Anna thought giddily.
"Not much has changed since yesterday," He joked. "Where's Elsa? I heard her answer the intercom."
"I'm right here." Elsa came out from her room with her purse and a black sweater. She was stuffing one last thing in her bag before she looked up. Her eyes landed on the flowers.
Gregor followed her gaze after a brief pause. "Oh yeah," He said with a chuckle to himself. "These are for you."
He handed her the small bouquet. They weren't extravagant, but Elsa didn't mind. There was a lovely mix of tulips, daisies, and two yellow roses with red tips. She smiled and felt herself blush. "Thank you, Gregor. They're beautiful."
She walked over to the sink and filled a vase. Anna was like a child seeing their favorite movie. Elsa noticed her face and willed herself not to roll her eyes.
"Hey, little guy." Gregor said cheerfully.
The girls looked over to see Gregor picking up and petting Olaf. The cat, now no longer the small kitten he once was, purred with pleasure. Gregor chuckled, adding a kiss to the top of his head. "Aw, who's a good boy?" Olaf continued to purr.
Anna laughed and walked over. Gregor handed over the feline with a final scratch under his chin. "Careful," Anna warned. "Next thing we know, Olaf will be following you home."
"Nah. He has it too good here." Gregor turned to look at Elsa. He gestured towards the door with a broad smile. "Ready to go?"
Elsa nodded timidly. Gregor's eyebrow went up, but he chose to stay quiet. He bid Anna goodbye and held the door open. Once Elsa was out he followed and gave one last wave to Anna. She smiled wide and gave an encouraging thumbs up.
Once outside and down the hall Gregor sped up a little to stop in front of Elsa. She halted with a surprised look.
"If you're not comfortable with this, I understand." He offered. "I know Anna more or less threw you into this."
Elsa let out a breath she wasn't aware she had been holding. She kept her gaze downward. "No, it's alright. I'm not uncomfortable, just a little...nervous."
"Nervous?"
"Well, it's like Anna said, I've never been on a date. I have no idea what I'm doing." She confessed.
Gregor's expression softened. "That's okay. Just be yourself and have fun. Dates are essentially just two friends hanging out, it's really a title if anything else."
Elsa gave him a grateful look which then turned a little sly. "I get the feeling you've done this before." One thin eyebrow rose with a smirk. "Ladies man, doctor?"
Gregor's face turned red like a tomato. He started scratching the back of his head and turned towards the wall. "W-W-Well, I have been on dates. I wouldn't exactly call myself a ladies man though."
Elsa laughed. "I'm only teasing, doctor."
She continued down the hall. Gregor caught up with her in two strides and then matched her pace. "You know, you can call me Gregor. Or Greg as your sister likes to put it."
"I know." Elsa said as the corner of her mouth tugged upward.
Elsa and Gregor sat at a booth as they waited for their food. To say things were awkward would be an understatement. Elsa thought to herself that this was probably where she should say something to get the ball rolling. She fiddled with her hands under the table while Gregor tried to think of a good conversation topic as well.
"I'm sorry it isn't a fancier restaurant," He started. "If I had known sooner I would've made a reservation at a nicer place."
"It's alright." Elsa stopped her fidgeting. "It's not your fault at all. Besides, I like this place. I think if you took me out to someplace like that I would've been overwhelmed."
"Oh, good." And the awkward silence was back. "Ummm, so...you liking your new job?"
Elsa perked up at this. "Yes, a lot actually. My boss is amazing and so are my coworkers."
"What do you do?"
"I'm a logistician. I help make sure products move smoothly from the supplier to the purchaser by using mathematical models to determine success."
Gregor stared blankly and then shook his head. "Sounds...complicated."
Elsa shrugged her shoulders. "Not really. It's just math. Once you have the formula, it's just a matter of inputting the correct numbers."
Gregor's look didn't change. He blinked twice.
Realizing he was having some trouble, Elsa reeled herself in. "Sorry, I forget sometimes that not a lot of people share my love for math."
Gregor chuckled and held up a hand. "No, it's fine. I feel the same way about biology. Not many people share my enthusiasm, you included."
"Heh, guilty." Elsa blushed.
"Of course, Professor Weselton didn't exactly help matters. I'm sure if someone else taught you it you wouldn't have come out with a burning hatred for it."
"That's a little over exaggerated."
"Elsa, you came back to the apartment muttering under your breath about how you hated frogs, flowers, the human anatomy-"
"Okay, okay. You've made your point." Elsa laughed. "Yeah, I did. I'm guessing Anna told you considering you weren't there whenever I came home like that."
Gregor nodded. "She's very talkative. Sometimes I think she doesn't even realize what she's saying."
"Yeah, that's my sister."
Elsa had that look of affection again. She had the same look back in his house when the girls came over, and it always seemed to be associated with her sister. Gregor realized he liked that look on her. A lot. He felt his face start to heat up and not so subtly coughed into his hand.
"Uh, so you like math. Anything particular about it?"
"Geometry!" She answered excitedly. "I just love how..."
The rest of the dinner went on without a hitch.
The two were walking in the park. It was around 9:30 and very peaceful outside. The only sounds were the crickets and cicadas, summer at its peak. The night was picture perfect. A small breeze, no humidity, with the moon shining high and bright. Fireflies danced throughout the night sky and park. Everything was the ideal scenery for a date.
Except the two had returned to an awkward silence.
Elsa was wrapped up in thoughts on how to make this easier. They were fine at dinner, but once they no longer had food in front of them, and were very much alone, she seemed to have lost her words yet again. Gregor was having the same internal battle, until a thought came to him.
He snapped his fingers and stopped, looking down at his date. "I have an idea."
Elsa stopped in her tracks. "Oh?"
He smiled wide. "Let's play twenty questions." Elsa remained quiet, a perplexed look on her face. "I know it's sorta a children's game, but let's give it a shot. I ask ten, you ask ten. We go back and forth."
Elsa thought it over and then nodded. "Alright then, but let's make it ten questions. Twenty's a bit much."
"Sure." Gregor agreed. "Five and five." He grinned and motioned to her. "Ladies first."
She giggled.
Wait, I'm giggling? She thought to herself. Where did that come from?
She quickly returned to the task at hand. "Okay," She brought her finger to her chin in thought. She smiled as a question came to her. "Why did you become a veterinarian?"
"That one's easy." Gregor smiled as they continued on the path. "I love animals. Since I was little, I've always had this kind of bond with them. I would bring home countless strays, much to my mother's chagrin." Elsa laughed at the semi-guilty expression he was giving her.
Gregor pondered for a moment before taking his turn. "What's your favorite season?"
"Winter." Elsa responded immediately.
His eyebrows went up. "Really? Aren't you born on the first day of summer?"
"Yes." The blonde responded with humor in her voice. "But I've always loved winter. Sure, it's cold, but it's also quite beautiful. I'm also rather pale and burn easily in the summer."
"You like the cold?" He asked a little perplexed.
"The cold never bothered me." She smirked up at him. "You just used up two of your questions."
Gregor narrowed his eyes in confusion and then his face turned to realization. "Hey! I said we would go back and forth." He jabbed.
"You also asked me two questions." She countered. "When I was born and if I liked the cold."
He stared at her with his mouth hung open. After a second of thought he closed it and belted out a laugh. "You truly are something Elsa Anderson."
Elsa wasn't sure whether to take this as a compliment or not, so she stood still. Gregor held up a hand in defeat, still chuckling. "Alright, you win. It's your turn I suppose."
He smiled, showing this was all in good fun. She returned it, his playfulness contagious. "Right then." They made it to the end of the park and started heading back to her apartment.
She hesitated to ask her next question. "You don't have to answer if you don't want to, I won't count it." Gregor patiently waited for her to ask. She was blushing. "So, how many dates have you been on?"
Gregor shrugged. "I'm not too sure." Elsa looked over. "I mean, I've had two serious girlfriends. And I've taken them on multiple dates when I was with them."
"Oh."
Gregor caught her tone immediately. "Hey." He stopped and made Elsa face him. "You know, it's not a bad thing that this is your first date."
Elsa looked up at him unconvinced.
"I'm serious." He urged. "So you've never been on a date. Who cares? All that matters is you do what you want, when you want to."
She smiled appreciatively. "Thank you, Gregor."
"You're welcome." He replied earnestly. Elsa's face heated up.
Quit it, Elsa. She scolded herself. Don't do this to yourself.
She cleared her throat. "So, I get to go again since you went twice." She hurriedly said.
Gregor blinked and then nodded. "Uh, yeah. Go ahead."
Elsa bit her lip. She decided on something a little more safe. "Favorite color?"
"Blue and green. Mixture of both."
She nodded and quickened her pace. "Okay. Your turn."
Gregor was very confused. One minute, she was having fun and relaxed. The next, she became jittery and was now avoiding him. He caught up without much of an effort. "Do I make you uncomfortable?"
Elsa sighed heavily. She stopped and ran a hand through her hair. "No. I'm sorry, Gregor. I'm not usually like this."
He took a step forward and grabbed her hand. Elsa's eyes widened and her face turned crimson. He either didn't notice or chose to ignore it. "Tell me what's wrong."
"I..." She looked away. "I'm not sure myself. I'm confused."
He raised an eyebrow, silently asking her to continue. Sneaky. Elsa couldn't help but think. Saving his last question.
She had no idea why she was saying this, but went on ahead. "I've never been in a relationship. I only once had feelings for someone, and that lasted only a few weeks." She groaned. "But now I'm feeling those things around you. Which makes no sense because I met you in January and only recently started to get to know you."
Gregor remained quiet, not loosening his grip on her hand. "I have no idea if I have feelings for you, or if this is just a bunch of pent-up hormones releasing themselves at the most inconvenient time."
She was starting to ramble. Great, I'm turning into Anna. "I mean, you're very nice, a perfect gentleman. You're patient, understanding, and a good friend in general. You even let Kristoff live with you!" She took a deep breath to collect herself. "I'm sorry, this is in no way fair to you. I'm just a mess right now."
"It's okay." He said understandably.
"No, it's not." She huffed and then looked at him.
Gregor was the ideal guy. He was understanding, kind, and adorably awkward. But he would push aside his awkwardness if someone needed him, like he was doing now.
To say Elsa was conflicted would be putting it light. She knew how ridiculous she was being, she had only really known him for two months. There was no way she could have feelings for a guy she barely knew, right? Then again, they did seem to get along well together. He could make her laugh and his patience was remarkable. Everyone Elsa knew liked him. Anna, Kristoff, Rapunzel, and even Olaf! And she couldn't help but feel the same way, only deeper. It was also no secret that he was attractive.
On the other hand she was aware she was very hormonal at the moment. She wasn't dumb. She was twenty-two and hadn't been kissed since she was nine. And here was a guy not only showing some interest in her, she thinks, but was a complete catch with a matching personality. It wasn't hard to do the math.
I'm not even sure how he feels. She realized.
Her face was determined as she looked up. "Gregor, do you like me?"
He blushed and hesitated before answering. "Y-Yes."
"As more than a friend?" She continued, using up her last question of the night.
He could only nod. She moved closer to him. Their faces were inches apart. Gregor felt his heart start to beat rapidly.
Anna said she deserved to be happy. Gregor made her happy.
She looked down shyly before addressing him.
"Do you trust me?"
The game was forgotten. Somewhere in the back of his mind Gregor knew he had one more question and that Elsa was exceeding her limit. He didn't dare say anything about it.
"Yes." He affirmed without hesitation.
Then make a move.
Elsa stood on her toes and closed the gap.
AUTHOR'S NOTE: DID YOU LOOK IT UP? :D
I KNOW, I KNOW, SEEMS QUICK! Before writing this chapter I drew up a timeline for my story.
Elsa met Gregor for the first time, at the diner, in January. He started to hang out and get to know the girls around the end of May, two weeks after Elsa's graduation. When the three went to his house, it was early July. This date and the previous chapter take place mid-July. I'm aware Elsa wouldn't normally be so forward, but again this is a modernized story and she hasn't been locked up for thirteen years or have magical ice powers influenced by her emotions. She's a regular young adult. I hope I did this chapter justice.
Now, with that out of the way: ASDFGHJKL! SO MANY FEELS. CURRENTLY SQUEALING INTERNALLY! As I wrote this fic, the song Make a Move by Gavin DeGraw was playing and I put it on repeat. So listen to the song as you read the chapter if you want to, because it's sorta inspired by it.
