CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Rick catches up to the truck and he tells Carol that when they get there he wants her up front and behind the wheel just to be safe. Daryl looks over at Carol and then to Sophia's terrified face and he looks away from her crying.
He looks over his crossbow making sure that everything is ready. When they turn down a long dirt road he leans more to the middle and he sees the farm house up ahead with many walkers milling all around it and he pushes the negatives thoughts away.
He, Rick and Shane jump out and Rick helps Carol into the front seat before they start their way to Eva and Charlie. "We are too close to town to use our guns." Eva yells as she tosses Rick a machete before tossing Shane an axe. She pulls her bow from out of the back seat of her truck and starts firing at walkers as she runs to the house and he and the others follow close behind.
When the come closer to the house they see the front door is wide open and he sees Eva kick a walker back before stomping his head in before running pass a decked out bus.
He yanks his arrow out of the head of a female walker as he passes her by and after he loads it up again he sees movement in the upstairs window. He sees a bloody, crying teenage girl banging on the window trying to get their attention. "Their upstairs!" He yells and points and Eva looks to him before following his hand.
TWDTWDTWDTWDTWDTWDTWDTWDTWDTWDTWD
"KAILEE!" Charlie screams when he seeing his scared grandbaby banging on the window upstairs. Eva pulls him away from a walker as Daryl's arrow hits it in the head and watching it fall to the ground.
Eva yanks it out and tosses to Daryl before running up the front steps. She throws her bow towards the couch and yanks out her knife before stabbing a male walker before moving over to the stairs. Daryl pulls her back into him when two walkers come tumbling down the steps and Rick and Shane quickly take care of them.
Eva yells at him to let her go as she tries desperately to get away from him. She stops struggling when five more walkers come stumbling down the steps towards them.
Daryl lets her go as they start taking them out while Charlie and Shane watch their backs. Eva and Rick quickly go up the steps after they move the walkers off of the steps.
She and Rick shut the doors as they pass by not wanting to be attacked by walkers if they are in the rooms. Eva quickly runs up to her room and starts banging on the door and she hears the girls crying and her baby boys screaming.
"Kailee! Let's us in! Come on baby you have to hurry!" She yells as she yanks on the handle, wanting desperately to be inside the room. "Eva hold on, we have to move the dresser!" Mel yells from behind the door and she waits and listens as the girls grunt and cry as they push the heavy dresser away from the door.
"The house and yard are safe for now!" Daryl yells as he runs up the steps and she looks back to him and he starts going into Jenna's room making sure none are upstairs.
She looks back to the door when the handle jiggles and the door is unlocked and she wastes no time pushing the door in. When she sees Kailee and Mel both standing there she cries and looks around and sees that her boys are on the bed crying and she is happy until her eyes fall to the floor.
"Oh god Jenna!" She screams before falling to the ground and she crawls over to Jenna body. Jenna starts crying when Eva reaches her and Eva grabs her face before looking her over. The moment she sees the bite on her shoulder, she knew, she knew what is going to happen, what she will have to do.
"NO! NO! Oh god!" She cries and she sees Jenna leg before looking back into Jenna's eyes. Jenna nods her head slowly before crying and burying her face into Eva leg. Eva cries and looks up to see Charlie holding onto the baby while Kailee holds Hayden while standing beside Mel. He looks at her before looking away and holding the kids closer to him.
"We need to leave very soon more walkers are coming. You can come and stay with us, but we need to leave now." Rick tells her as he kneels beside her. "I'll take Jenna out to the bus, you and Charlie can take the kids to your truck and then we'll help you pack up your stuff." Rick tells her and she looks up at him and nods not being able to say anything.
Daryl pulls her up from the floor and she watches Rick as gently as he can, picks Jenna up into his arms. He starts walking out of the room and she quickly walks over to Charlie and the kids.
"Mama!" Hayden cries throwing his arms around her neck and she cries into his shoulder before grabbing Mel's hand and they start walking out of the room in a close line.
"Baby I need you to keep your eyes closed for me ok." Eva says to Hayden and he nods as he buries his head into her shoulder his eyes shut tight. Mel buries her face into Eva's back as they go down the steps not wanting to see all the walkers.
"Where are Abigail and Cody?" Eva asks and she tenses up when she feels Mel's head shakes against her back as she holds her hand tighter. Eva makes the mistake of looking down the hall to their room. She sees both of their bodies lying there, both covered in blood with wounds in their heads, She looks forward and doesn't look back.
She sees Shane snapping at Rick before helping open the bus doors. Rick carefully gets Jenna up the steps and into the bus. Eva quickly opens the back down of the truck and turns to Mel. She wraps her arm around the girl's waist and helps her climb into the back. "Hayden baby, I need you to go to Mel for me ok." She says as she tries to gently pull him away from her.
"NO!" He screams as he wraps his arms and legs tighter around her. "Baby please. I need to help get our stuff so we can get away from all these walkers... and I have to take care of Aunty Jenna." She said trying not to cry from her double meaning of 'take care of'.
He slowly lets her go crying all the way as she hands him over to Mel, who holds him to herself tightly. She quickly turns and helps Kailee get into the back before taking Warren from Charlie's arms. Eva cries and kisses his face before passing him over to Kailee.
She quickly shuts the door before turning to Charlie. "Go sit with Jenna, I'll go get our stuff." She says and Charlie nods before placing his hand on the back window before walking with her back to the house. He climbs up into the bus as she walks up the steps pass Daryl and Shane.
She then tells them where all the bags should be and they split up not wanting to be here longer than they have to. She slowly walks pass the couch gabbing a blanket as she passes by.
She walks down the hall as she unfolds the blanket, she throws it up and covers up Abagail and Cody's bodies. She starts to get up but stops when she sees bandages on Cody's leg.
Eva gets so angry when she unwraps the bandage and sees the bite wound on his leg, he wasn't sick... he was bit. How could he be so stupid and now he and Abigail are dead and Jenna... oh Jenna.
She gets up and quickly makes her way up the stairs and to her room. She grabs her bag, Hayden's bag and the diaper bag and she starts to leave but stops when she sees a fluffy leg peeking out from under the blanket. She picks up Hayden's tiger and places it inside the diaper bag before leaving the room.
She starts to go into Jenna room to grab her bag but stops when she sees Daryl coming out of her room carrying her bag. "I know you know what the bites means, but I thought you might want her stuff." He says quietly before looking away from her, thinking he might have made a mistake.
"Thank you." She says quietly before walking pass him and into the bathroom. She grabs the bathroom bag and follows Daryl down the stairs, noticing that he has Kailee's and Mel bags as well.
"I'll drive your truck and Daryl can drive the bus to our farm, so you and Charlie can be with Jenna" Rick tells her as they pack up all the bags into the buses storage compartment.
She nods before shutting it closed before slowly walking up the bus steps, Daryl following close behind. She sees Jenna and Charlie sitting there on the floor and she holds back her tears, as she tells Charlie what Rick said.
Charlie leans down and kisses Jenna forehead saying his goodbye before moving over so Eva can sit by Jenna's head and he sits by her side grabbing Jenna's hand. Eva sits down and she lifts Jenna's head up and places her leg under her head, ignoring the burning of Jenna's skin against her own.
She tries to wipe the blood from Jenna's face but all she does is smear it. "I don't... I don't want to be... one of them...please." Jenna whispers in between her sobs of pain from the bumpy road as it jostles her wounds and aching body.
"Please Eva...please." Jenna cries and Eva holds her closer and she cries. "I promise. Jenna I promise. Just relax, Charlie and I'm here." Eva says as she looks Jenna in her eyes and wipes the tears from her cheek. "It's ok, it's ok, just close your eyes... let go... let go." Eva whispers holding back her tears as she watches Jenna eyes close.
Jenna's breathing slows down and her grip on Charlie's hand relaxes and her breathing fades as the pain leaves her body and then she stops breathing.
Eva cries and pulls her leg out from under Jenna's head and she gently rests Jenna's head on the floor. She looks up to Charlie and he rests his head back against the wall and he nods his head.
She looks down and unzips one of the pockets of her cargo pants and pulls out her pocket knife. She flips it open and looks down at Jenna's peaceful face. Eva kisses the forehead of the woman who has become her friend, her family... her sister.
She does it quick, she does it clean, through the back of neck up into her brain, keeping the promise she made.
