(Marissa's POV)
Catherine had called me early this morning saying she had to discuss something with me as soon as possible. She also said that it should be without Steve.
I parked at the small diner Cath told me to meet her at. She was waiting with two cups of coffee sitting in front of her when I finally made my way in.
"Hey, sorry for being late. Lily didn't want me to leave." I said sitting down in front of her.
"I didn't have to wait long. Look what I am about to tell you is going to make you upset but I figured I should share this information with you first. Someone from Doris' past is looking for her. " Cath replied stirring her cup.
"Why are you telling me?" I asked.
"You are more level headed when it comes to handling things. Doris didn't want me to say anything to any of you but I think she is in way over her head." Cath answered.
"What do you know about who is after her?" I asked again.
"His name is Mangosta. He is looking for revenge. Look I don't know much of the details. She is calling Joe as we speak to see if they can track him down before he makes it to the island. Marissa if people are starting to figure out she is alive her life isn't the only one in danger." Catherine explained.
"Call me when Joe gets in. If I can help keep her safe I will. Thanks Cath." I said leaving a few dollars on the table and getting up.
(Steve's POV)
Everyone was in their offices going over the last cases paper work. Marissa arrived about an hour later with a box full of malsadas and some coffee.
Danny was the first to greet her and help her with the food.
"Hey where have you been?" I asked.
"Caught some breakfast with a girlfriend. I brought back some with me." She replied setting the box of treats on the table.
"You are a god sent." Danny replied take a malsada and stuffing into his mouth.
Chin and Kono joined in grabbing their own treat and coffee and heading back to their offices.
"Anything discussed I should know about?" I asked searching her face for anything wrong.
Her eyes shifted slightly before she responded
"We talked about the usual, I complain about my husband and how I have my hands full with 4 kids instead of 3." She said with smirk.
Danny began to choke on his malsada to cause Marissa's attention to move from me to him. After finally catching his breath he began to laugh.
"Shut up, Daniel" I growled out.
He continued to laugh as he made his way into his office.
"So I am a big kid uh?" I asked
"I was just teasing. Don't be so hard on Danny. You have to admit it was funny." She said handing me the last coffee.
I took a quick glance at everyone's office before I snuck a kiss from my wife's lips.
She smiled before leaving me at the smart table to her own office.
HPD called and said they had found a floater off of one of the beaches in Wikki.
At the beach there was plenty of on lookers surrounding the blockade around the victim's body. Max was already on scene viewing over the body.
"Hey Max, what do you got for us?" I asked.
"Caucasian female, early 20s. By the looks of it she suffered from blunt force trauma. I won't be able to tell you more until I get her to the lab." Max ran off.
"So what are you thinking? She got him in the head. Whoever did it freaked out and dumped her in the ocean for the sea creatures to finish off." Danny said.
"It could but just a boating accident. Those sails are heavy, could have been on a boat with some kids who don't know what they are doing." Marissa cut in.
"I will check and see if anyone reported a missing girl this morning." Chin stated.
"Kono, talk to some of the people and see if they saw anything" I ordered.
"On it boss." She said leaving.
"I will follow Max to the lab and see what he can find for us." Marissa said following the corner.
Danny and I were looking over the information HPD sent over about the case when Chin and Kono came in with some information.
"So what did you guys find out?" I asked.
"No one saw anything at the beach just her body washing up to the shore. A couple of teenagers found her body and called it in." Kono answered.
"No one has reported anyone missing fitting out victim's description." Chin added in.
"A girl that young has to still be close to her parents. Someone has to be wondering where their little girl is." Danny added.
Marissa called and said she had some information for us. Her face looked sadden when she came up as she set her tablet on the smart table.
"Our victim's name is Katie White. She is 23 years old. Just graduated UCLA. She was 10 weeks pregnant." Marissa ran off bring the young girls driver's license on the screen.
"I just talked to her parents on my way up here. They said she was on a trip with some friends. They should be here in a few hours." Marissa said."
"Did the parents say anything about her knowing she was pregnant?" Danny asked.
"They didn't mention anything. I didn't think it would be right to bring up the fact both their daughter and grandchild had both died over the phone." Marissa answered.
"Did the parents mention a boyfriend?" Kono asked.
"Yeah they said his name is Keith Summers." Marissa said pulling up his information on the screen next to the victim's.
"Maybe he isn't ready for a kid and decided to use this trip to get rid of both problems." Chin said.
"That's a possibility but we don't know for sure. Have HPD look into the some hotels close to the beach and see if they can get on any of the names renting a room in the area." I told Kono.
"I will go show their pictures to some of the docks around the area maybe they have seen something." Chin said heading out.
"I dropped off her clothing to Charlie. The evidence might be washed away but I am having him check just in case." Marissa said gathering her things.
"Alright, Danny and I will help HPD check hotels around the island. Why don't you wait here for her parents? I know they are going to want to speak to someone right away." I said.
(Marissa's POV)
A half hour after everyone left Catherine called me to let me know Joe was back in town. I was still waiting for Katie's parents. I told HPD to call me as soon as arrived as I took off to meet Catherine again.
Doris' safe house was unlocked when I arrived causing me to pull my gun out. Doris, Catherine, Joe and Mick Logan were standing around maps and pictures of what I guessed were the target.
"Marissa, what are you doing here honey?" Doris asked.
"I could ask you the same." I replied holstering my gun.
"You told her?" Doris said turning towards Catherine.
"Look she did the right thing. Plus it was better she came to me than Steve." I cut in.
"Look whatever I see or hear never leaves this room. I am trying to help protect you. So who is going to go over the details with me first?" I asked making eye contact with each set of eyes in the room.
Joe and Doris were the ones who talked the most about Mangosta and how dangerous he really was. He was an ex-mark of Doris' and was seeking revenge because of information she took from him.
"Look I really think you should include Steve on this." I said after a half hour.
"No, absolutely not. He will make this his problem when I can handle this on my own." Doris argued.
"Look I don't like him going on crazy missions either but he can help you. He is trained in things like this." I argued back.
My phone started to ring, checking the caller id I noticed it was HPD.
"Look I am giving you a few of days to change your mind. But you need to tell him before I do. I have to go. Make sure to call me." I said grabbing my purse and heading to HPD to talk to Katie's parents.
There was a couple sitting in an integration room with distraught faces when I arrived. Both looked to be in their early 50s.
I brought in a couple cups of coffee when I went in.
"Mr. & Mrs. White, my name is Detective McGarrett. I wanted to talk to you about your daughter Katie." I said sitting down the cups in front of the couple.
"We want to see our little girl" Mr. White stated.
"I would like to talk to you first about your daughter before we can do that, sir" I reply.
"Our baby just graduated UCLA top of her class. She was always are good girl never got into a lot of trouble. I just want to know who would do this to her" Mrs. White said beginning to sob.
"Can you tell me about the group of people who can out here with her?" I coaxed.
"It was her usual group of friends from college, he boyfriend Keith and his sister Marney." Mrs. White shakily.
"What about Keith? Did he and Katie ever fight?" I asked.
"No we both like him. He treated her like a princess. They would fight but about normal things." Mr. White cut in.
"I have some information about your daughter that I wanted to ask you about." I started noticing the way Mrs. White shift uncomfortably.
"Did you happen to know your daughter was pregnant?" I asked with caution.
"There is no way. She would have told us" Mr. White argued.
Mrs. White sat quietly with tears pooling down her face.
"I knew. She told me a couple of weeks ago. She said she hadn't told Keith yet because they were both worried about finals and she didn't want to add more stress." She stated.
"You knew and you didn't tell me." Mr. White asked his wife angrily.
"She said she was going to tell everyone when the time was right. They didn't plan this." Mrs. White explained.
"Did your daughter mention anyone that wasn't happy with her?" I asked.
"She got along pretty well with everyone." Mrs. White.
"We would like to see our daughter" Mr. White stated again.
I nodded my head in agreement and took them down to Max's lab. Mrs. White was the first to burst into tears looking at their now deceased daughter and grandchild. After a few minutes I walked them to their car handing them a card with my number.
This was the hardest part of the job telling a parent their child is no longer living. Mr. White asked for an update as soon as any information was brought in.
Back at HQ Danny and Steve were interviewing the boyfriend Keith Summers. He looked distraught as they told him about his dead girlfriend and baby.
Keith left in tears with his sister Marney.
"So do you think he is good for it?" Chin asked.
"You didn't see his face when I told him about the baby. He broke down as soon as he saw the pictures of Katie's body. I don't think he had any part of this." Danny said.
"Alright run Keith's phone records and Katie's as well. Run financials too." Steve ordered.
After a few more hours Steve sent everyone home for the night.
(Steve's POV)
Marissa was chopping stuff for the salad as Tyler and I manned the grill. Lily sat at the table and colored babbling away about her favorite cartoons and Disney Princesses while Liam laid in his bassinet next to his sister.
Marissa came out and told the kids to go wash up as she took Liam out of the bassinet. She kissed his cheeks as she held him. Looking at her hold our son I felt bad for Keith that he would never have that opportunity to hold his own child the same way I held mine every day.
Marissa noticed my staring and looked up from Liam to look me straight in the eyes like she knew exactly what I was thinking about.
I quickly pulled the steaks off the grill and grabbed Liam from her arms. He had grown a lot now being 4 months old, it was hard to imagine he was born six weeks early and he was now his normal weight and he was healthy.
Marissa wrapped her arms around my waist as I held our son. Lily and Tyler bound down the porch steps joined by wrapping their arms around their mother and I before Marissa told us all to sit down to eat.
The next morning Kono had found something interesting about Katie's phone records. She found various texts from Keith's sister Marney telling Katie to stop cheating on her brother or she would make sure Katie's life would be a living hell.
"Girls are mean" Danny commented reading over the text messages between Katie and Marney.
"Do we bring her in?" Kono asked.
"Have HPD in and let's have a chat with her." I ordered.
Marney Summers was fidgeting sitting in the interrogation room as Danny and I talked to her. She said that she thought Katie was cheating on her brother.
"Come on Marney, wouldn't you do anything to protect your brother." Danny taunted.
"I wouldn't hurt her. I was upset because I knew she was cheating on him with some guy from school. She was always meeting with him for coffee or grabbing lunch with him." Marney defended.
"I bet that pissed you off didn't it? I bated.
"Look I was mad but I wouldn't go that far." Marney argued.
"Not even if you thought the baby she was carrying was not your brothers?" I asked.
She shift in her seat before she answered "I didn't know she was pregnant until you told my brother yesterday"
Chin opened the door and motioned for us to step out.
"Kono dug a little more into Marney's phone records and there was text from a friend that came with them to the island. The text asks where she is at. The text came around the same time as the time of death." Chin ran over handing me the sheet that had the messages.
"Well isn't that a coincidence" Danny said snatching the paper from my hand to get a better look at it.
"We can't book her based on just on text messages. We need some more evidence." I stated.
"Charlie called Marissa on my down here and said he may have something for us." Chin said.
"Alright, in the mean time we can't hold her. Let her go but have HPD keep an eye out on her. Also have Kono run Katie's records and see if maybe she was seeing someone else." I replied.
Danny cut Marney loose as I headed back upstairs with Chin.
Kono didn't find anything that would hint Katie was having an affair with another man. Just some texts from what looked to be a study group.
Marissa came back up from seeing Charlie with a smile on her face.
"Charlie found the weapon used in the blunt force trauma. It's a particular vase that is sold to only one hotel on the island. Guess who is staying at that hotel now?" Marissa said.
"Marney" Kono answered.
"Correct. Charlie called the hotel and asked where they keep the vases. Turns out they use them in the little sanctuary by the boat docks." Marissa added.
"You think Marney lured Katie out to talk and when Katie denied having a boyfriend she snapped and hit her over the head." Danny asked.
"That is a motive and plus Marney doesn't have an alibi and we have proof she was gone at the time of the murder." Chin added.
"I have even better evidence than what Charlie just gave me. There are cameras in the sanctuary area. I already asked for the tapes and they are being brought in as we speak. " Marissa added.
"Let's check in with Charlie and see if he finds anything on those tapes." I said.
A few hours later Charlie had sent us the footage of Marney hitting Katie in the head and pushing her into the water. The tape also showed Marney dumping the broken vase into the water along with Katie.
Keith stood outside HPD as they brought in his sister in hand cuffs.
"Why did she do this?" he asked not believing his little sister was capable of killing his girlfriend and his child.
"She wanted to protect you. She thought Katie may have been seeing someone else. I had them run test your DNA against the DNA we got from the baby. You are the father. I am so sorry for your loss." I said handing him the DNA test results.
He said his tearful thank you before getting in a cab.
Marissa had the White's in her office when I went back upstairs. The older couple had tears coming down their faces as they made their way out of her office.
They passed by with a quick thank you and left out the glass doors.
Marissa and I were the only ones left in the office after we solved the case.
She didn't say a word as came into my arms and hugged me close. I kissed the top of her head before telling her it was time to go.
