"It ain't complicated
Well, I've grown to hate it
I never liked the taste of crow but baby I ate it
They tried to warn me
They said that you were ornery
So don't bring me those big brown eyes and tell me that you're sorry
Well you might as well throw gasoline on a fire
The way you lie"

(Steve's POV)
My mother was glaring daggers at Marissa as she made dinner. I could tell something had gone on when I walked in to the kitchen. Marissa was watching the perimeter as she cooked and my mother looked like she went 12 rounds.
Tyler had turned on the football game and begged me to come watch it with him. Pulling the bassinet with me, Lily and I sat down with Ty to watch the game.
After dinner Marissa and I tucked the kids in before heading downstairs to talk to my mom. I could tell by the way she was tensed up I wasn't going to like what I heard.
My mom was nursing a bottle of beer when we made it down.
Marissa's gaze looked uneasy. She blew out a puff of air and pulled her hair up into a bun.
"Your mother's past is starting to catch up to her a lot faster than anyone was expecting." Marissa started looking at my mother for some kind of help.
"What does she mean mom?" I asked growing impatient.
"It's nothing I am not trained to handle, Steven." My mother answered.
"Doris you could have been killed today if it wasn't for Catherine's help." Marissa shot back.
"Wait, back up what the hell happened today mom? " I demanded.
"An ex mark of your mother's named Mangosta tried to take her out." Marissa stated.
"I had the situation under control. He won't be coming near this island again." My mother assured.
"Are you out of your mind? The whole point of letting you stay here was trying to keep you out of harms way not for you to take care of it on your own." I yelled standing up so I could look both women in the face.
"How long have you known?" I asked my wife.
"A couple of weeks. Catherine gave me the heads up on what was going on with your mother. We wanted to make sure it was a real threat before we got anyone else involved." Marissa replied.
"We? Who else knows what is going on besides me?" I asked her. I was beyond furious now.
"Joe and Mick." Marissa answered.
"So you all decided to handle this without even consulting me. And why are you so quiet?" I asked switching my gaze from my wife to my mother.
"I am not a child Steven; I have been doing this job longer than you have been born. I took care of it." My mother answered.
"You could have fooled me. My whole family's life was in danger today and I don't find out about it until I get home." I spat out.
"Steve, this is just as much my fault as it is hers but we need to come up with a plan. If anyone else knows she is alive Mangosta is the least of our worries." Marissa stated.
"I am trying to protect my family too" My mother added.
"I think it's time you went home." I said grabbing my beer and heading out to the back yard.
The tide was rolling in when I sat down on one of the chairs. Marissa came out a few minutes later with a beer of her own and another one for me.
"Steve, I know you are upset with me. I want to protect her as much as you do but your mother makes a valid point she knows what she is doing. But I do think she is in way over her head." Marissa stated looking into my eyes.
"Do you realize how serious this is?" I asked.
"I do and I know your mother does to" Marissa sighed taking a seat next to me.
The next morning I went to my mother's safe house to talk to her. When I entered there was a letter sitting on the table with my name on it.
Dear steveie,
I know that you are upset with me and I realized I had put our family at risk. Joe is taking me to somewhere I can hide. I am not going to let anyone else harm my family.
Love,
Mom
I knew she would do this. I balled up the letter in my hand and made my way to HQ. I ran into Danny on my making my way.
"What has you in a bad mood?" Danny asked scrunching his face due to the harsh sun.
"My mother did what she does best she disappeared." I shot back.
"I am surprised you aren't on the next save Doris mission." Danny replied stepping through the glass doors of HQ.
"Yeah well Joe and my mother know how to cover up their tracks." I snarked.
"Hey don't get mad at me babe. " Danny said defensively
"What's up boss?" Kono asked.
"HPD called said they have a case for us." Chin stepped in.
"Where is Marissa?" Kono asked.
"Text her the address and lets head out." I said wondering where my wife could be.
(Marissa's POV)
I was on my way out the door when I received a call from the governor's office asking me to come in.
The secretary let me straight into Governor Denning's office as soon as I arrived.
"Mrs. McGarrett thank you for coming in on such short notice." Sam Denning said shaking my hand and offering me a seat.
"Please it's Marissa. I am just a little confused why I was called in and not Steve." I replied.
"I have a son with an ex-wife that has been getting in trouble. He will be moving in with me and I want to create a protective detail team. And I want you to be the head of the team" Sam stated.
"I am honored that you have asked me to do this. But I am a cop if you wanted to hire a security detail for your son you could hire an agency that specializes in that." I replied.
"I am aware of those agencies. But I want Thomas being protected by someone I can trust. You have children; you know how important it is to protect them." Denning stated.
"I would need a few days to think about this" I answered.
"I understand. My son will be arriving on the island in a week and I would like to have a detail set up before he gets here." Sam replied shaking my hand again before heading out.
I arrived at HQ the same time the team was coming back. Steve was in his office when I arrived as Chin, Kono and Danny stood over the smart table.
"Wow babe, I think you are dressed for the wrong job" Danny stated taking notice the black dress and blazer with the 4 inch pumps I was wearing.
"Thank you Danny" I replied turning a shade of red before looking for my husband.
Steve was sitting at his desk reading a crumpled up piece of paper when I entered.
"Sorry I am late. I got a very interesting call" I started shifting my husband's gaze from the paper to me.
"Wow you look amazing" Steve commented putting the paper down.
"Thanks. How did your mom's go this morning?" I asked slipping out of my shoes and sliding myself to sit on his desk.
"She is in the wind again" Steve replied with a huff handing me the letter.
"Steve you can't control her. She feels bad for dragging you into this." I defend.
"I want to protect her. Wo Fat is still on the loose." Steve shot back.
I stayed silence as I watched the gears turn in his head.
Kono popped in a said she caught a lead in the case breaking the moment of silence between us. I hopped off the desk and went to change.
As we gathered around the table the Chin went over the details of the case to catch me up. A body was found in an abandoned warehouse outside of Waikiki beach.
"Victim is 39 year old Arnold Caver. Just moved to the island a few weeks ago. No wife or kids. I checked his bank accounts and not sure how he made it here. He only has about $100 bucks to his name." Kono started.
"That's not enough money to even last him a day. Do we know anything else about him?" I asked.
"No criminal record. Max is doing his autopsy right now." Chin added.
"Kono and I will see if we can pull up anything else on his financial records. Why don't you boys head down and see what Max found." I ordered.
"Did I miss something here?" Danny asked looking at Steve.
"About as much as I missed. Let's go." Steve replied staring me down looking for a hint of what is going on. I smiled at the boys as they headed out
"Is there something going on?" Kono asked.
"Nothing. Let's just see what we can pull up." I stated typing in our victim's name.
The boys came back with some information they had gotten from Max. Our victims had high amounts of heroin in his system with now track marks that indicated he was user except the one.
"What if he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time? There are known drug dealers in the area." Chin stated.
"If he was hooked on heroin before he got here. That would explain why he only has a small amount of money." Danny added.
"Arnold is a man in perfect health. He has good teeth, clear skin . There is no indication that he has been using." I replied.
"Max found some of the heroin left on his skin. Charlie is running it now for the composition. In the meantime let's go see if we can find any witnesses." Steve stated.
Danny rolled his eyes knowing that the rest of his day was not going to go how he wanted it to.
(Steve's POV)
Danny was ranting about how I handled one the drug dealers we caught on the street. Apparently threatening to tie up the suspect to the hood of the car was not okay in Danno's book.
"Can you stop looking at me like that" Danny said agitated.
"I am just waiting for you to explode buddy." I replied with a smirk.
" I am not going to give you the satisfaction. What I would like to know is what is going with you?" Danny retorted.
"Can we just handle this case, please" I beg not ready to discuss my life right now.
It turns out that the abandoned warehouse was bought by our victim. Arnold Carver had spent every last dime of his to open a new factory that would manufacture surf clothing.
At HQ Marissa was talking to our victims' sister over the phone. She was going to collect his body and bury him in his family plot.
The case was closed after we got the kid we picked up selling on the streets to flip on some higher ups.
Marissa and I were the last two in the office as everyone headed home for the night.
"I never got to ask this morning. Why were you dress up?" I asked.
"Sam Denning is offering me a job" Marissa stated straightening up some paperwork on her desk.
"Are you considering it?" I asked.
"It's an amazing opportunity and I think it would be good to give us some space. I know you are having trust issues with me for protecting your mother and I don't blame you. This might be a good idea for me." Marissa replied.
"Look I know you are trying to help. And yeah I am pissed but you don't have to quit because you and I are dealing with our own problems." I answered.
"I have a few days to decide. I think this will be a good idea for all of us." Marissa defended grabbing her stuff ready to head out.
