A/N I feel like I start every chapter with an apology at the moment and I don't know if it bugs people but I really am sorry and hope that this school year I can start to introduce a regular writing/posting schedule. This summer has been really tough but I'm glad to say that everything is a lot better now and I will *fingers crossed* get on top of all this writing.
I haven't been completely lazy though- I did post a destiel oneshot so if that would interest anyone I would love you forever if you could read it and give me some feedback as it is my first short fanfiction.
Also, two guest reviews were left and so I'm answering them at the end of this chapter- I don't know if those people will still be reading this piece but if anyone has any similar questions I hope I can answer them satisfactorily.
Finally, sorry for anyone who noticed the programming issues, I think my computer and are not best friends so if there are any more problems let me know and I'll do my best to fix them :)
Harry began the last couple of days before school began trying to figure out why someone had given him a blank, 50 year old diary. He had tried different spells, to see if there were any hidden diary entries, but had found nothing. He suddenly found himself followed everywhere by Ginny Weasley, who Hermione said had a major crush on him. He kept the diary hidden, mostly because it was a bit weird walking around with some guy's diary, especially some really old stranger.
Draco and Daphne broke up when she returned from her holidays due to the fact that she'd decided to hook up with Marcus Flint without telling Draco. He didn't really care, and she was a little hurt, but she was a Slytherin, and it didn't take her long to get over it.
The Slytherin table was quite quiet on the first day back as everyone sat at breakfast preparing for class. Blaise was building ridiculously tall card houses, showing off to the girl next to him, but Harry suspected he had cast some kind of sticking spell to the cards.
Most of the Slytherin card decks were enchanted one way or another- cheating in any game was a given, as long as you were smart enough to not get caught it was fine. Draco was one of the best at manipulating the cards, but Harry never played. He had found it strange at first, that everyone cheated, but after a while he realised it just added an extra challenge to the game.
The first class of the day was Defense Against the Dark Arts. Since the first lesson with the Cornish pixies their classes had mostly been theory based and mind numbingly dull.
Harry survived the rest of the day, and was sitting in the common room. It wa fairly empty, as most people were still at dinner. He knew that he should be doing the homework that the teacher's had already started piling on but was instead still contemplating the mysterious diary, and watching Draco animatedly talking to Blaise.
"So I told the mudblood, told her she didn't belong here." Harry winced.
"You okay Harry?" Blaise asked concernedly.
"What? Yeah I'm fine, I just you wouldn't call muggleborns... that."
Blaise looked at Draco awkwardly.
"Why do you care?" muttered Draco.
"Because my mother was one of them! I grew up in the muggle world. Do you think I have 'dirty blood'?"
A small crowd had formed as Harry's raised voice drew attention.
"Leave it Harry."
"But-"
"I said leave it!" Draco slammed his hand down, knocking Harry's ink pot over, spilling the ink over the diary and parchment lying on the table.
"They're not any different from you" Harry called after Draco. "That's what you're really scared of isn't it?"
The other Slytherin's began to leave the common room, not wanting to be associated with Harry's outburst.
"I should go make sure he's okay" murmured Blaise, leaving Harry to clear up his stuff. Everything was covered in ink, everything except the diary. While the ink had stained the cover, Harry could see the pages absorbing it and as he watched the ink disappeared.
Harry experimentally dropped a splatter of ink onto the diary's pages. Again, the ink faded into the pages. Feeling a bit stupid he picked up his quill.
Hello
Hello.
The word appeared in elegant cursive.
My name is Harry Potter
Hello Harry Potter. I am Tom Riddle.
What is this book?
It is my diary, a memory of sorts.
"Harry?" Draco entered the common room. Harry flipped the diary shut.
"I'm sorry about earlier. I know you dislike the term mudblood, but it is a common phrase in our culture. Especially now, with the Chamber of Secrets opening, when there is such a divide between muggleborns and purebloods."
Draco hated the way it sounded reasonable. He found himself questioning his father's beliefs, a dangerous idea.
Harry decided not to fight with Draco and changed the subject.
"What happens if the Chamber opens? I mean it's happened before right? Can't Dumbledore or someone just find it and seal it shut?"
"No one really knows much about it. Last time it was opened someone died, and they hushed the whole thing up. That was almost exactly 50 years ago. It's a shame we don't know what happened."
"Wait- 50 years ago?"
"Yeah. Anyway I'm going to get some quidditch practice in. Want a hand tidying all that up?"
"Nah it's fine. I'll see you later."
As soon as Draco was gone he opened the diary again.
Er- hi?
Hello Harry.
Did you go to Hogwarts when you had this diary? 50 years ago?
Yes.
Then you were there when the Chamber of Secrets was opened?
Yes.
Well it's happening again
Oh?
Yeah. And I was wondering if you would tell me what happened then
Why?
So I can try and stop it. People are being hurt
You are like me Harry, I too tried to shut the Chamber. I was commended for my actions then, and now I will show you what happened so that you may find the Chamber.
Harry closed the diary. That night he hardly slept. Hagrid- the gamekeeper had opened the chamber before? And professor Dumbledore must have surely known that so why employ him? Why wasn't he locked up, especially now that it was happening again?
Harry didn't know whether he should tell anyone- after all, a 50 year old magic diary was hardly a reliable source.
The decision of whether to tell anyone was taken out of his hands however. When he awoke the next morning it was to find that the diary was gone from his trunk. No accusation could possibly be made without evidence, so there was nothing Harry could do.
Draco watched Harry searching through his things bitterly. His father's orders seemed ridiculously counterproductive. 'Sneak the diary into Ginny Weasley's things Draco'. 'Anonymously give the diary to Harry Draco.' 'Kill all the castle's roosters Draco' 'Steal stuff from your best friends trunk Draco.' And those were the simple orders. On the side he risked his life trying to bring about the rise of the Dark Lord. Fabulous. It would all be worth it though. Dumbledore would catch Voldemort in the end and he would be free from his father. Free to be whoever he wanted, with whoever he wanted. He could do anything.
Here hare my guest reviews and answers, thanks for reviewing and if anyone has any other questions please do ask me :)
"Ron has a point Draco has only been mean so why would she hang around him" (chapter 20)
I think part of the reason she did go off with Draco was to show Ron that she wasn't his, that she could look after herself and Ron doesn't get to choose who she talks to. I don't dislike Ron, but in this fanfiction Hermione has (at this point) a small crush on Draco so that also contributes (I'll talk about Draco vs Ron in the next review). Also, note that even though Hermione goes to the hospital wing with Draco in chapter 20 she hardly talks to him, and leaves him to check on Harry, and does give a valid reason for Ron not to come (he needs to check on Ginny who looks unwell). I hope that answers your question :)
"Ron would be hurt becouse Draco made fun off Ron family, HArry would not be friend with hermonie since he never like her and complain about her for years, and Draco was a jerk to her. And forsome reason you made it that hermonie does not like Ron, when he was the love of her life." (chapter 21)
Ok, a few separate points in this one, and please forgive me if I misunderstand any of this review as I found it a little difficult to get. Yes, I think Ron would be hurt. Do you think I should have made that more obvious? I don't actually dislike Ron, but for the purpose of this story he has taken a back seat so the focus is not on his feelings so much. I don't really understand the next point- in the books Harry and Hermione are good friends from first year, and before that it seemed to be mostly Ron who complained about her? In this fanfic I think he feels a little sorry for her, and they are both quite similar- dumped into a world completely different from the one they grew up in. Draco is a jerk to her, hence why right now they are mostly not friends. Should I make them dislike each other more do you think? Finally, yes, in this story Hermione does not like Ron. I love book Ron but I never thought that he and Hermione were a good couple (my favourite HP ship is probably HarryxHermione) and so this fanfiction revolves around bringing Draco into the golden trio, by placing Harry in Slytherin and beginning to create a relationship between Hermmione and Draco. I hope that answered your review alright.
