"Look, there she is!"
"Hide me!"
"Don't be such a baby—"
"I am not!"
"Then go over there and—"
"I don't want to do this anymore Galen, can we just go back to the apartment?"
"I knew you were going to wimp out!"
The fifteen year old Luke shoved Galen at the statement, a scowl morphing onto his face. "I'm not wimping out…I just decided that this dare was stupid and I don't want to do it."
Galen shook his head with a smirk. "Excuses, excuses. If you're not chicken then just go over there and get it over with."
Luke glanced back at Mara Jade, blushing furiously as he took in the slightly younger girl with the flame red hair. "I should have never told you I liked her. Besides, do I really need to right now? Can't it wait till she's alone and not surrounded by her friends?"
Galen laughed. "Oh, but what's the fun in that? Come on Skywalker, I thought your family had more guts than this!"
Something flashed in the young boy's gaze at the taunt, and he straightened up. "Fine then, I'll do your stupid little dare; but I'll do it to prove to you that I'm not afraid."
Galen grinned, clapping him on the shoulder. "Atta boy."
"I hope I don't regret this," Luke muttered before he turned a sharp eye on Galen. "If this goes wrong Galen, I'm coming after you!"
Galen rolled his eyes. "Stop stalling Luke, and get over there," he chuckled, pushing Luke in Mara's direction. Luke shot him one last threatening look before he turned back around to face Mara's direction, working his bottom lip nervously between his teeth as he tried to think how he was going to possibly do this.
This was scarier than facing the rage of either of his parents, or standing in front of the Council. It was utterly terrifying, and he was absolutely sure that his fight or flight instincts were going to kick in at any moment and start him running as fast and far in the opposite direction as his legs could possibly carry him. But no, he kept moving forward, step by step, steadily coming closer to the red headed girl that was flanked by two of her friends; a Rodian girl and a togruta girl about the same age.
Mara glanced in his direction, and Luke was sure he was about to seize up and run in the opposite direction, but instead he continued to move forward. What had possessed him in the first place to accept such a dare from Galan? He should have turned and run while he still had the chance.
Luke came even with the girl, and Mara studied him expectantly, turning away from the conversation she'd been having with her friends with a raised eyebrow.
"You're Master Skywalker's son, aren't you?" she asked before Luke even came to a stop, throwing him off with how straight forward she was.
"Uh…yeah, yeah that's me," Luke said, doing his best not to sound nervous.
"I thought so," she said, turning to face Luke fully. She studied him for a moment, her expectation growing. "So…do you have something to say to me, or are you going to keep standing there?" she asked pointedly. Luke started slightly and shook himself out of his stupor, opening his mouth to spin some elaborate excuse before a single thought entered his mind.
Tell her the truth, echoed in his mind, and Luke snapped his mouth shut, cutting off whatever he'd been about to stutter out. His jaw set firmly in place as he gathered his wits about him.
"Can I talk to you for a moment," he asked pointedly, trying not to think of how Galen was probably watching him and laughing hysterically.
"Go on," Mara said in slight amusement, not moving an inch. Luke sighed, fighting the blush that threatened to creep up due to his embarrassment.
"Alone?" he asked, the blush breaking through as Mara's two friends giggled behind her. Mara was unfazed by their giggles, but she did raise her eyebrows a little higher in surprise at Luke's request.
"All right then," she said slowly, following Luke as he pulled her away from her friends and came to a stop by a nearby column in the hall. "Whatever's on your mind Skywalker, you can just spit it out. It's doing more damage struggling to get out of you than it will being out in the open," she said, only mildly joking.
Luke bit his lip again, taking a deep breath before he rushed through his explanation. "My friend and I were messing around and he dared me to…well he dared me to kiss you," he explained, his face heating up furiously as he explained himself to her, keeping his eyes down on his feet. "I wasn't going to do it but he'll never let me live it down if I don't, and I just have to ask if it's all right if I do…"
Luke kicked himself mentally for the several moments of silence that stretched between them. Force, he sounded like such an idiot. She probably thought he was a fool and was about to laugh at him…
"All right then, go on and get it over with."
Luke looked up at the girl in surprise. "Wait, what?"
Mara seemed amused by his reaction. "Well I wouldn't want your manly pride being hurt now, would I? And I guess being kissed by the legendary Anakin Skywalker's son could be considered bragging rights if I'm ever being annoyed by some girl who thinks she's better than everyone," she teased.
Luke blushed again, shuffling his feet shyly. "So, um, do you want me to just kiss you on the cheek and call it good, or—"
Before he could say another word Mara leaned forward and gave him a quick peck on the lips, stunning him into silence. She smiled roguishly at him.
"You talk too much," she said before she returned to her friend's side. Luke simply stood there in shock for a few moments, watching her until she disappeared from sight. When he turned back in the direction that Galen was, he was startled to see his father leaning against a column next to his friend with a boyish grin on his face. Luke blushed in embarrassment at the thought that his father had witnessed the entire ordeal.
It didn't change the fact he was glowing for the rest of the day out of pure joy.
