Twelve year old Leia tried very, very hard to keep her temper in check. She was about ready to throw herself at and start beating on the arrogant jerk that wouldn't leave her alone, but fear of what her father would say kept her staring straight ahead and ignoring his insults as she powered down the empty hall. Even now, however, the anger was starting to beat out the fear, and she was sure that she was about to get into yet another fight.
After the last fight she had been in, Leia's father had practically threatened house arrest for several months if the fighting didn't calm down, but she was seriously considering pounding in the boy's face as he insulted not only her but her brother and father as well. What was with this kid?
She came very close to swinging a fist at the kid when he shoved her sideways into a column in the hall and she hit the floor with a painful thump. "Hey, I'm talking to you, schutta!"
That's it, Leia thought, leaving her small satchel at her feet as she stood up and got ready to tackle him to the floor. She was brought to a halt when another voice suddenly carried towards them, and the sound of hurrying footsteps reached their ears.
"Hey!" came her brother's familiar voice. "Back off, sleemo!"
The zebrak boy, who had to be about fourteen, sneered at him. "Come to stick up for your fierfek of a sister, Sithspawn?"
Luke glared at the older boy, standing tall and defiant despite his diminutive frame. "E chu ta, gravel maggot," he shot back before he suddenly dealt a powerful right hook to the zebrak's jaw that knocked the boy flat on his back. Luke leaned over and helped Leia to her feet. "Are you okay?" he asked. Leia scowled slightly.
"I'm fine," she huffed, glaring at the zebrak boy as he got to his feet, cursing their family the whole way. Luke stood protectively in front of his sister as he turned to face the boy.
"What's your problem?" Luke demanded.
"Your family's my problem; people like your family is what's wrong with this Order. We were perfectly fine till your family started meddling with the Code. Your causing the Order to slip and lose its principles."
"The only way the Jedi Order is losing principles is by letting hut'uun koochoo like you train to be Jedi," Luke scoffed. He turned his back on the boy, pulling Leia along. "Come on, let's get out of here."
The zabrak boy seemed to gain some courage from the fact they were leaving, probably convincing himself that they knew they couldn't win the fight. "That's right, get your karking kreetle sister and crawl back to the hole you belong in with your coward of a father and schutta mother—"
He didn't get another word out because Luke had turned and popped him in the mouth, and this time he didn't jump back off. This time he kept swinging, and Leia even joined in despite the fact she was already treading deep waters with fights. Explicatives and insults were flying not only from the zebrak boy, but from the twins as well as fists and feet flew.
So caught up were they in their fight that they didn't see the imposing figure that had sensed the disturbance and was currently making their way swiftly over to where the three were locked in their scuffle.
"Hey, hey! Break it up, now!" Anakin demanded, grabbing both twins practically by the scruffs of their necks and lifting them up with ease. "What's going on here?"
The zebrak boy had the nerve to lie. "I-I-I didn't do anything, I just said a harmless hello!"
"You blinking—" Leia started, but Anakin cut her explicative off sharply.
"Leia!" he snapped, and the girl instantly hushed. Anakin fixed the boy with a sharp look, causing the zebrak to shrink. "I'll be having a talk with your Master; you better hope I don't catch you fighting with anyone ever again. And you two are going to have a long talk with me in my Temple apartment."
Leia shriveled slightly in her father's grip at the thought, feeling like she was a microscopic organism on display as he father handed her small satchel back and led both twins back to his Temple apartment. He steered Leia onto the couch, sitting her down but keeping his grip on Luke. "Stay there; I'm going to clean your brother up, and then it's your turn."
Leia shrank into the couch and clutched her satchel close to her, watching in a strange mixture of hurt and guilt as Anakin steered Luke towards the refresher.
"Sit," Anakin said, pointing towards the toilet while he wet down a towel. Luke's lip was bleeding and he had a nasty looking bump growing on his forehead, as well as a collection of smaller cuts and bruises. Anakin sighed, kneeling down in front of his son as he started to gently wash the little injuries. Luke wouldn't look him in the eyes, and there were understandable questions swimming around in his mind. As he gently dabbed at Luke's injured lip, he decided to speak.
"I can believe Leia getting into another fight given her recent record...but what I find hard to believe is that you were in the fight too," Anakin scolded gently. "I expect more from you Luke."
Luke still wouldn't meet his eyes. "I'm sorry Father," he muttered.
Anakin frowned at how little resistance he was meeting, and there was so much more swirling around Luke through the Force than the boy was letting on. "Luke, tell me what happened."
"I don't want to talk about it," the boy muttered, and Anakin's frown deepened.
"I know getting into fights like that for no reason isn't you; there had to be a reason. It's also obvious because Leia didn't argue with me about it for once that something is going on. Please, tell me?" Anakin pressed.
A muscle in Luke's jaw twitched. "The kid was picking on Leia; she wasn't doing anything, she was trying not to get into a fight, but he pushed her to the ground and called her a shutta," he explained, and Anakin felt a spark of anger kindle at that. "I told him to leave her alone, and he called her a feirfek and me a Sithspawn, so I...might have hit him...but I didn't continue the fight! I helped Leia up and we were going to leave."
"But...?" Anakin asked slowly, keeping his temper in check at the story and trying not to think of the irony of the boy calling Luke the Sithspawn. That little detail could remain unknown.
Luke scowled, a disturbingly angry look flickering across the boy's face for a second. "He said our family was a disgrace to and what's wrong with the Order, called Leia a 'karking keetle' and you a coward and mom a schutta, and I couldn't take it! I decked him and Leia joined in...she didn't start it...and it's obvious you ended it...I'm really sorry Father, I didn't mean to lose my temper, I didn't want to, it just happened and I'm really sorry."
Anakin sat back and processed what Luke told him, holding the cool rag against his growing bump. Finally, he spoke. "You need to be mindful of your anger. Plenty of people will insult you or those you care about to get a rise out of you, or to use it against you."
"I know Father..." Luke said quietly. "It just...happened."
"I understand that Luke...you don't need to apologize, I understand what happened now..." Anakin pursed his lips for a moment, thinking. "Did you knock him clear on his back the first time you hit him? Before you helped Leia up?"
Luke blushed a little. "Yes, I did."
Anakin ruffled his hair affectionately. "That's my Pilot." Anakin stood up, washing off the rag and folding it up again. He pulled Luke gently to his feet and pressed the folded up rag to the bump on his head, placing Luke's hand over the rag to keep it in place. "But I'm serious, don't let your anger get the best of you. If you're going to get in a fight, make sure it's worth it, and try not to start it...None of us are perfect, but I would prefer if you avoid getting into fights with other Jedi in the temple, no matter what they say. Just come to me and I'll handle it, okay?"
Luke sighed. "All right Father...thank you."
"Anytime," Anakin said gently, pulling Luke into a one armed hug. "For the record, from what you've told me, the kid deserved it. But where did you learn those curse words?"
Luke blushed, grinning at him sheepishly. "You."
Anakin was startled. "What?"
"I might have picked up most of them from when you think you're alone and working with a rather frustrating piece of machinery, or over the com on missions, or when—"
"Alright I get the picture," Anakin mumbled. "Come on, it's your sister's turn."
Luke frowned. "Don't go hard on her Father, please?"
"I won't, I promise," Anakin said.
The two shuffled over to the couch where Leia sat like an inmate awaiting the death penalty, with Anakin sitting between the twins.
"Let me see," Anakin said gently examining Leia's own little collection of little injuries. Anakin could tell that the zebrak's horns had gotten them pretty good. "Luke told me what happened."
Leia looked down. "I'm sorry I got in another fight Father. Am I in trouble?"
"No Princess, you're not in trouble," Anakin assured her, cupping her cheek in his hand. "In fact, I'm proud that you were able to avoid getting into a fight with that boy as long as you did."
Leia looked up in confusion. "But you said last time—"
"That was different," Anakin assured her. "I'm going to tell you the same thing I told Luke; it sounds like the boy deserved it, but at the same time you can't let your anger get the best of you. You both know what that could lead to, so you need to be careful and work on controlling your tempers. There is a time and place for everything, including fights. Last time was not one of those times. This time was, from Luke said."
Leia sniffled slightly. "He was really cruel. I tried not to do anything and ignore him like you told me, but he kept getting worse..."
"Hey..." Anakin said softly, pulling his little girl close to him in comfort. "It'll be all right; some people are just like that, and plenty will do things like this just to get a reaction out of you. When you get older, their intentions will get worse, so it's best to work on controlling your temper now; don't let them get under your skin. Besides, you have me and your brother if you ever need some boy that's being mean to you taken care of."
Anakin put another arm around Luke, pulling both of them into a tight hug. "You two are twins, and twins have to stick together and look out for each other. Can you both do that?"
They both nodded, and Anakin smiled. "Luke, are you going to stick up for Leia and keep any nasty boys from picking on her?"
"You bet," came his muffled reply.
"And Leia...are you going to make sure that Luke doesn't embarrass himself too badly in front of Mara Jade?"
"Hey!" Luke cried out indignantly, trying in vain to wiggle free.
Leia laughed. "I promise!"
Anakin grinned mischievously, planting a kiss on the tops of each of their heads. "I love you two. Even if you tend to drive me crazy."
"I love you too Daddy," Leia whispered.
"Love you too Father," Luke said, his voice muffled.
Anakin grunted and stood up from the couch. "How about some ice crème to cheer us all up?"
Their faces lit up, causing him to chuckle. "Yeah!" they cried enthusiastically.
It was nice to put the little incident behind them. Anakin was sure there would be more to come, but he didn't worry too much. The twins would look out for each other and make sure that they both stayed out of trouble. That, Anakin was sure, would never change.
