I DO NOT OWN YUGIOH or SORRY!, MONOPOLY, AND LIFE
Yugi sat alone in his room, starring out the window, but he wasn't looking out it. The blinds were drawn o that the outside world could not look in but Yugi was fine to listen to the soft patter the rain made as it hit the window. Silence ran through the dark, still room despite the rain. Yugi allowed his mind to be pulled into a calm oblivion that he so rarely got to enjoy. These were the time that he didn't have to worry about Saru despite how near the other was. He could here the soft sound of the TV in the living room through his closed door, Saru lay asleep on the couch.
Yugi glanced at the broken clock on the bedside table. Six-twenty six flashed back at him in dull green numbers. He took a second efore he remembered to take off the four hour difference to get the real time. Two-twenty six. It would irritate him at times that he couldn't fix the clock or even buy a new one. In order to buy a new one he would have to ask Saru but he long gave up asking when Saru said that is wasn't important for Yugi to have. Blank eyes turned to the door. In the distance, hidden under the sound of the TV, Yugi could make out the faint hum of the dryer as the sheets cycled through.
Last night had been one of those nights where he locked himself in his room, not to come out until dawn. Saru would get into a... mood those nights, and it was a mood that Yugi never wanted to be around for it was worst then his fury. Nothing would make Yugi come out of his room those nights, not even for food.
His stomach gave a rumble as he remembered that he hadn't eaten sense lunch yesterday. The thought of food was easily scared away last night and even this morning. The other downside to these nights was the aftermath. If Yugi got caught then he would have to do the clean up and that was a job Yugi did not enjoy. Earlier this morning, when he thought it was safe to venture for food, he left his room only to jump back when he saw Saru exit his. He hoped that Saru hadn't seen him but he did. The older man had called him back and made him clean the apartment of the mess. Yugi shivered at the memory. It was a disgusting job that always made him retreat into his room when he was done. However now that left him with an empty stomach, sitting alone in his room. For two days he had been locked up in the apartment bored.
A smile crossed Yugi's face. Two days ago was when the run in with Joe and Yami happened. It was nice to see and talk to them even though it was difficult and dangerous for them. He was grateful that they followed Saru and his friends around so that they could keep Yugi company. To add on to the happy memory, he was able to get Yami phone number. He turned from the window to grab his phone and placed it it front of him on the bed. Drawing his knees to his chest, he placed his head on his knees. He hadn't sent anything to Yami and Yami didn't send anything to him, probably so Saru didn't accidentally find out. This meant that if they wanted to talk, Yugi would have to start the conversation.
The quiet pitter-patter of the rain outside started to slow and Yugi looked out the window with determination growing inside. He didn't want to spend another day alone and bored in his room. Not when an opportunity like this rose. Jumping off the bed, he opened his small closet that held his few, worn clothes. Among them was an old grey hoodie which he took off the hook before turning and snagging his phone off the bed and stepped out into the hall. A few doubts worked their way into his head before he physically shook them out. He wanted to do this and he was not going to have fear of the 'what if's?' stop him. Sparing one last look at Saru, who slept on unaware of Yugi's escape, Yugi shrugged on his hoodie and zipped it up. Yugi slowly turned the door knob trying to make as little noise as possible as the door opened. Once a small crack as made he squeezed himself through and closed the door.
His heart beat faster as adrenaline rushed through his veins making him rush down the stairs only to stop at the buildings entrance. Now was the time to turn back, to not cross this line. If he went back now then Saru wouldn't find out. Exhaling a breath he had been holding, Yugi rose the hood over his head and without looking back, opened the door.
The cool afternoon air rushed at him as he took a step outside, raindrops landing on his jacket. Yugi turned to the right and ran down the street. Rain blew into his face as a gust of wind rushed by and blow his hood back. Yugi yelped in surprise before putting his hood back and keeping a hand there to hold it in place. Though the streets were vacant, all people were inside staying dry, if someone were to see him running around then they would be sure to tell Saru.
His eyes darted to the car free street. A faint mist hung on the ground from where the rain made contact with the ground adding to the ghostly feeling that the abnormally silent city gave off. He shivered and slowed his steps into a walk. It felt strange to have the city empty, even though e knew that everybody was just inside. Still, to have no soul on the street was very odd to this city.
Taking out his phone, Yugi ducked his head to see the screen. He searched around until he found the name he was looking for.
'Hey.' he sent. Now he had to wait.
After a few minutes passed and no one answered, his spirits began to fall. He should have thought of the fact that the other might not answer at all. Who knows, Yami could be doing more important things right now. A heavy sigh escaped from him. Great, now his risky move was an unfruitful one and he only had himself to blame. He should have messaged Yami earlier instead of risk getting into trouble first. He jumped when a vibration brought him out of his thoughts.
'Hey Yugi.'
'Do you think that you can meet me somewhere?'
'Sure, but what about him?'
'Don't worry. Can you meet me at the park entrance?'
'Yeah. I'll be right there.'
Yugi gave a soft smile and closed the phone. At least he wasn't interrupting anything important. Relief washed over him and he shook his head. He shouldn't have doubted Yami answering. The other would have answered eventually, so there was nothing for him to worry about. Pocketing the phone, Yugi looked up and watched the rain as it continued to slow. He felt calm inside, more so then he thought he would have been. The feelings of unease or worry didn't come up as he thought they would have. He thought that by now he would be thinking about turning around and going back to Saru before the man realized that he was gone. Instead he felt calm, unburdened and worry free.
The small smile stayed on his lips as he looked to the sky, watching as the clouds started to thin. He chuckled at the irony. Even the sky knows that when he was with Yami things were brighter, happier. This was their, what? fourth encounter and he was already looking at the red eyed man as an escape. Yami was persistent abut being apart of Yugi's life and he wanted to help him, so it would make sense for Yugi to see him that way. Yami has helped him. Even just seeing the man helped Yugi.
Yugi lowered his gaze when the top of the black gate entered his vision. A brighter smile creeped across his face when he noticed a black clad figure with spiky hair under the gate. The smile turned into a mischievous smirk when he realized the man was facing away from. Quietly, he crept up on the unknowing Yami until he was in reach.
"Boo!" YUgi shouted as he jumped at Yami and wrapped his arms around the others neck.
Yami jumped at the shout and was about to attack the person when he realized who it was.
"Ra Yugi! Where did you come from?" Yami exclaimed as his heartbeat slowed. He wasn't expecting Yugi to great him that way!
Yugi giggled as he slid from Yami's back,"Sorry, but it was the perfect set up for scaring."
Yami rolled his eyes with a smile."So, what do you want to do?"
Yugi looked away as a small blush dusted his cheeks."I didn't really.. think this this far ahead. I,um, just didn't want to be bored for another day."
"Hmm." Yami glanced around before returning it to Yugi who was playing with his hands,"How about we go back to my place? I'm sure I have something we can find to do there."
Yugi brightened at the suggestion and nodded his head. A chill breeze picked up and caused Yugi to shiver. His thin jacket wasn't going to keep him very warm but he didn't have anything else to wear. All his other jackets would have helped less then this one. He silently cursed the jacket as he rubbed his arms.
"You cold?" Yugi looked at Yami who put a hand on his shoulder.
"I'm fine."
He heard Yami let out an exasperated sigh. Yami shook his head with a smile and eyes closed. When they opened they weren't looking at Yugi but he could clearly see the spark of amusement in them. Then Yam's hands moved to unzip his jacket.
"Um... I'm fine, really. You don't have to-oh."
Yugi gave up his protests when Yami shrugged off the article and put it around his shoulders. He could tell that Yami was cold despite the dark blue sleeves covering the goosebumps on his arms. A pang of guilt ran through Yugi as he hugged the jacket around him for warmth.
"But now you're cold."
"See, I knew you were cold." Yami replied with a wink and walked down the sidewalk.
Yugi glared at Yami and huffed before following the other. Yami chuckled at his protest.
"We're starting to enter fall, Yugi. What are you doing in an old hoodie?"
"What are you doing with a gang leaders lover?" he shot back playfully.
"You're not his lover if you don't love him so I don't see the danger." Yami wrapped an arm around Yugi's shoulders.
"At least you see it that way. But if I'm not a lover then what am I?"
Yami thought about it for a second, choosing his words carefully."To Saru, you are a prisoner. To the city. you are a danger.-"
"Gee, thanks." Yugi gave Yami a small push in his side.
"But to me,"he continued,"you are a light."
"A light?" Yugi tilted his head to one side as he looked up at Yami.
Yami nodded."A light."
Yugi waited for an explanation but only sighed when he realized Yami was going to give him one.
Yugi turned his gaze to the street, missing Yami's satisfied smirk, and realized they were entering the outskirts of Domino. The paved road turned to a dirt one littered with pools of mud, and the tall buildings stopped as the land became vast with green grass.
"You live out here?"Yugi asked breaking the comfortable silence.
"Yeah. My cousin owns an area over here and he thought that it would be a nice place for me to live."
Yugi mulled over the information for a second."Is your cousin Kaiba?"
Yami shot a shocked look at him."How did you know?"
Yugi stood up taller,"Saru knows who owns what land and Kaiba is the only person who owns land out here. Everyone else just owns the houses." A proud smile gleamed up at Yami.
"Oh! If we're almost to your house then you should take this back." Yugi added as he slipped the black jacket from his shoulders.
Yami looked at the offered jacket then to amethyst eyes. One glance at those eyes told Yami that he would loose this battle. Sighing defeat, he took the jacket and put it on. He wished that Yugi would have waited until they got back to the house to give him the jacket so that he wouldn't get cold. It didn't bother him if he was cold but he understood Yugi's concern.
The sound of a car caught Yami's attention. Looking down the road he noticed the car coming their way and he also noticed a giant puddle near them. However he noticed the puddle too late.
The car zoomed passed them as the walked beside the puddle. When the tires hit the puddle, the mud spewed to the side where they were. Yami didn't get hit a lot but Yugi, who was closest to the street, was soaked from his chest down. A laugh from inside the car could be heard as it rolled out of view. Yami watched the car with a glare before turning to Yugi who had a look of shock on his face.
"Good thing I handed back your jacket huh?" Yugi turned his head to Yami and offered a sad smile.
Yami shook his head and glared at the retreating vehicle one last time."At my house I think I have some clothes that can fit you."
Yugi jumped and fully turned to Yami."N-no, I can just wear these..."
Yami simply smiled at his rambling's and led them the rest of the way to his house. Yugi kept stuttering nonsense that he could just wear these and that Yami didn't have to do the offer, with Yami saying from time to time that he couldn't stay in those clothes. Deep down, Yugi knew Yami was right and his protest became less and less. They walked up to the house before stopping so Yami could unlock the door. Yugi took this time to marvel at the house. It was huge! How could only one person live here? He came to the conclusion that it was a house that looked big on the outside but really was smaller on the inside.
When the door was unlocked, Yami stepped aside so Yugi could go in first. He stepped inside the house and waited for Yami to come in before going any further. The soft squish sound of his shoes stopped Yugi from going further. When he took a step back a mud imprint stayed on the wood floor. Yami looked at the floor then back to Yugi who looked away. Yami gave a 'hmm' before he turned down the hall and turned left.
Yugi stood patiently in his spot and fiddled with the end of his now soaked jacked. He hoped Yami wouldn't be mad at him as he noticed a small pool of mud collecting at his feet. When he tried to move, the mud would collect faster and the pool would increase. He looked around frantically but found nothing he could use to clean up the mess. Yugi sighed. Not even three steps into the house and he was already making a mess of things. In the other rooms he could hear Yami looking around before the steps drew closer.
"Here, change into these. I couldn't find anything that was exactly your size but these should fit."
Yugi took the folded clothes then looked at Yami.
"You can change in that bathroom down here." Yami directed when he saw Yugi's unsure gaze.
"But the floor-"
Yami waved off the concern and turned to leave.
"Once you're done changing, let me know."
Yugi watched as Yami retreated into what he assumed was the living room. He sighed and crouched down, grimacing when the puddle grew. Setting the clothes a safe distance away, he took off his shoes and placed them neatly beside Yami's. Standing again, he took the clothes and walked over to where Yami said the bathroom was. He cringed as he saw the mud trail that he left behind.
'Saru would kill me if he saw this mess.'
Yugi shook his head. He wasn't at that apartment so he didn't have to worry. He stood frozen in the middle of the bathroom, wide eyed. He wasn't at that apartment. Ha! He wasn't there. Aha! Yugi jumped with a wide smile as he closed the door. Instead of sitting in that dark apartment doing nothing, he was here against Saru's rule with Yami! A rush of adrenalin pumped through his veins and his heart sped up. This was the first time he had actually broken a major rule! Sure he would sometimes go to the club Saru had banned him from but this was different.
With new energy, Yugi took off his jacket and shirt. Using a damp towel, he wiped off the mud that had soaked through his clothing. Once his chest was clean he set down the towel and took of his socks and pants. Yugi groaned when he realized that the mud had soaked his boxers as well. He bit his lip and turned to where the folded clothes sat on the toilet. He walked over to the pile, hoping the Yami had thought that this might happen and sure enough, under the sweatshirt was a fresh pair. Yugi used the towel to wipe off the rest off the mud before switching underwear. Happy to be out of his dirty clothes, Yugi now turned to the clean outfit. Among the articles of clothing was a red sweatshirt that was way too big for him, a plain white t-shirt and black short-shots.
Yugi blushed a bit at the outfit and set it down. He knew Yami had different things that he could wear but chose not to think on it sense Yami was already being nice and letting him borrow these.
'He probably picked what he thought you would look cute in.'
His blushed darkened at the thought. Nope, no need for that thinking. Yami just didn't want to make Yugi wait too long while he picked to outfit. Yep, that was it. He put on the outfit before turning to look at himself in the mirror. As suspected, the sweatshirt was too large for him (and probably Yami) and stopped mid-thigh, completely covering his shorts. Taking in a breath he opened the door and stepped out.
"Yami?" he called
Said man stuck his head around the corner."Oh great, you're done." he walked over to Yugi," Can you hand me you clothes?"
Yugi nodded and gathered his dirty clothes and the towel then handed them to Yami."What are you going to do with them?" Yugi looked down the hall and noticed all the mud had been cleaned up.
"Wash them." Yami said over his shoulder as he walked down the hall and into a room before Yugi could protest.
He had to thank the car for splashing Yugi now. These clothes were so worn! The clothes felt like they had been washed and used so many times and even the color seemed to have faded. In some places Yami could see where a hole was starting to come in. A frown marred Yami's face. These clothes should have been thrown out a while ago so why did Yugi still have them? Tossing the clothes into the washer, he put in the right amount of detergent and started the cycle. He would have to give Yugi some clothes to take home. He had way too many anyway. His job done in this room, Yami walked out and closed to door to muffle the sound.
He looked up and down the hallway before spotting Yugi standing in the living room in awe. Yami smiled at the expression and walked over. Once he was close enough he laid a hand on Yugi's shoulder. Amethyst eyes glanced at him before they continued to take in their surroundings.
"You have a huge house, Yami. I thought that it was going to look big on the outside but be small on the inside but I was wrong!" Yugi then gestured to the large window.
"You're going to have a beautiful view in the winter!" he then turned to look at Yami with a wide smile.
Yami chuckled,"You think so?"
Yugi nodded enthusiastically."Mm-hm. Domino's really pretty in the winter. Oh!" Yugi gave a small bow to Yami,"Thank you for the clothes."
"No problem. Besides,"Yami smirked,"you look cute in them."
Yugi blushed and looked down where he was playing with the hem of Yami's sweatshirt. "Thanks." he mumbled
Yami took a second to admire the adorable sight. His eyes traced Yugi's figure up and down before returning to the others face. The others blush seemed to be darkening and his eyes refused to look at Yami. After a few seconds more, Yami spoke.
"Do you want to play a game?" Yugi looked up and nodded.
"You can sit on the couch while I bring out a few to choose from."
Yugi watched as Yami walked upstairs onto the loft before sitting down. He could tell a blush was still on his face and rose his hands to try and rub it away. A part of him expected the comment but what he didn't expect the admiring gaze that followed. The gaze didn't feel harsh or judgung or even lusful but something else. Yugi couldn't quiet put his finger on the feeling but he knew that it made his heart race and make him feel warm inside. He leaned forward and buried his face in his hands. Saru had starred at him many times -a shiver ran down Yugi's back as he remembered-, those times he wished he could just disappear but not with Yami. So what was it?
The sound of footsteps drew Yugi's attention out of his thoughts and to Yami who was carrying three different boxes.
"So," Yami set the boxes on the table,"we have Life, Monopoly, and Sorry!. What do you want to play?"
Yugi looked back at the games before picking one."Let's play Sorry!."
Yami smiled and put the other two boxes below the coffee table. As he took a seat next to Yugi, he heard a rumble come from the other. He looked at Yugi and saw the other place a hand over his stomach.
"S-sorry. I guess I'm a bit hungry."
Yami stood and moved to the kitchen."That's fine. Did you have lunch?"
Yugi turned around on the couch so he could face the kitchen. "Yes."a pause,"Yesterday."
He flinched as the bowl Yami had in his hands was placed roughly on the counter."Are you telling me that you haven't eaten sense yesterday?"
"Maybe."Yugi answered quietly but Yami heard it.
"You know what? I'm not even going to ask why. Do you know why? Because I can't even rely on him a little to take care of you. Not even with the simplest of things! It's not like I trusted him before but.."
Yugi watched with a smile as Yami moved around the kitchen ranting. From time to time he would wave his hands around in the air to help get his point across making Yugi chuckle. Honestly, Yami was acting like a mother! Though, Yugi guessed it was fitting considering how much Yami has helped him recently. None the less, it showed that Yami cared about him. Yugi laughed as Yami turned on the faucet too quickly and get splashed, earning a half-hearted glare from Yami. Still, Yugi was beyond grateful. He's had to take care of himself and Saru for a year without anything in return and now, Yami was here to take care of him.
Still smiling, Yugi slid from the couch and walked over to Yami.
"Ranting isn't going to solve anything mother." Yugi teased as he grabbed the two bowls full of cheese balls and pizza rolls over to the couch.
"At least I care enough to rant about it." Yami shot back as he followed with glasses of water.
"Did you know you're very animated when you rant?" Yugi laughed as he set the bowls down then sitting himself.
Yami rolled his eyes as he did the same."So I've bee told."
Yugi chuckled and help set up the board game. When all was set up they chose their pieces, Yugi was green and Yami was blue, and put them in their respective spaces. The two started playing and talking about nothing in particular. They ate as they played and soon the pizza rolls were finished with Yugi having eaten the most leaving the two with cheese balls which where being quickly devoured mainly by Yugi.
"Hey Yugi?"
"Mm-hm?" Yugi drew a card and moved one of his pawns back four spaces.
"Can I ask why you still have those clothes?"
Yugi rose an eyebrow at him and Yami sighed as he drew.
He picked up a pawn and moved it in the safety zone."Those clothes were over used and thin. Most people would have gotten rid of them by now."
Yugi plopped a cheese ball in his mouth and sat back."I can't get rid of them. If I do then that's one less outfit I have."
"Can't you buy new one's? They are cheap in some stores."
"I wish I could but I can't. I don't have the money. Not even a job."
Yami was shocked. Yugi was about 20 and he didn't have a job? Not even money?
"Why don't you have a job? I know your old enough to have one and be able to make some money."
Yugi laughed."Yep. You'd think that when your twenty-two you would have a job and money but most people do't have Saru."
Yugi closed his eyes."Saru... he made me quit my job saying that I would no longer need it. Then he..."Yugi took in a shaky breath," he got into my bank account and... used.. all that I had." Yugi swallowed a lump in his throat."Even all the savings I inherited from my Grandpa."
They sat in silence. The more Yami mulled over the words, the more irritation and anger built in him. Saru had done many things to Yugi, but this? This was pushing it too far. All the money that Yugi had worked up to save and what his grandpa gave was all gone, wasted on who knows what. Nothing reasonable more than likely. Yami closed his eyes to try and calm his emotions. It just angered him how much Saru had done Yugi wrong. This time he had passed into Yugi's personal items and wasted them! Taking a calming breath, he opened his to look at Yugi. The others body was shaking and his eyes were clenched shut, suppressing tears. Yami thought he would burst into tears at any moment but none did. Instead the other took a deep breath and released it a moment later.
"So," Yugi spoke sitting up."It's my turn, yes?"
Yugi gave a shaky smile to Yami who just stared. It amazed Yami that Yugi could handle the memory so well but some part of him didn't think so. That part of him was concerned that there were many unshed tears that the other had buried deep down inside of him. Yami was scared that if Yugi kept those bottled up then something bad might happen, and he didn't know what to do.
Yugi drew a card and smile a bit,"Sorry." he said as he took his last piece in the start and replaced it with one of Yami's that was close to Yugi's home.
The two continued the game with light chatter. As the time passed the heavy air left them and Yugi was able to relax. He hadn't told anyone that story but ten again, he had no one to tell. It felt nice to not have that burden alone, like a weight had been lifted from his shoulders. Out of the many things that Saru had done to him, that one cut the deepest. That and... A shiver ran through Yugi. Light thoughts for now. Light thoughts. Yugi relaxed with the more time that passed. One bowl of cheese balls later, and a food coma was fogging his mind. Slowly his eyes drooped and he laid his head down on the pillow. He saw Yami move his last piece into home before he fell into a comfortable sleep.
Yami leaned back as he placed his last piece onto the home space. It was fun to play with Yugi and it had been a close game with Yugi only having one pawn to return home. Despite the change of mood in the middle of the game, they had manged to keep a nice conversation going for the rest of the time. He smiled and turned to see Yugi curled up on the couch asleep. When the other shivered and curled into a smaller ball, Yami stood to gather a blanket and laid it over Yugi. His gaze softened as he kneeled by Yugi's head and watched him sleep. He pushed a golden bang out of Yugi's face. Yugi had been through so much and there was still more that he didn't know ans probably didn't want to know. He sighed. If only he had been here earlier then maybe he could have saved Yugi before all those things could happen. Yami liked the sound of being Yugi's savoir.
A faint buzzing sound reached his ears causing him to turn away from Yugi. Reluctantly, Yami stood and cast one last look at Yugi before walking to the noise. He followed the noise down the hall and into the bathroom that Yugi had changed in. Sitting on the sink, vibrating, was Yugi's phone. He picked up the phone and read the name on the screen. Saru. Narrowing his eyes, Yami flipped the phone up and answered.
"Where the hell are you?!"
(Koobre: Thank you Wilbell and v flower for suggesting that they play a game. Also bare with me on this new writting style while I get the hang of it. I love you all and you are all very supportive of this story. Thank you all. Please Review.)
