A/N: I'm loving the reviews guys, thank you so much! This chapter isn't too exciting, but it was necessary to show some Beca/Catherine bonding, so read on and reply and let me know what you think!
Beca sighed as she looked at the clock hanging in the booth. It was 12:30am on the dot and Catherine hadn't shown up at the station yet. She tapped nervously to the beat of her latest mix (a mash up of Temple by Kings of Leon and Baby by Justin Beiber) as her mind went back and forth with reasons as to why the cute girl from the bar hadn't dropped in.
'She said midnight, right? It's still early…maybe she fell asleep? Who are you kidding, she's probably not that interested…but she did text you an hour after meeting you…shit what if I told her the wrong time? I left the door unlocked right?...fuck.'
12:32.
'Whatever. I'm always late for everything…maybe she is too…'
12:45
'She's totally not coming'
12:57.
'This isn't the first time I've been blown off. I should just get used to this.'
1:15
'Fuck my life. I'm going to be alone forever…with cats. Lots of cats. But fuck, I don't even like cats. Well, maybe loneliness will produce some sort of chemical in my brain that makes me like cats?'
As Beca was stacking CD's and waiting for her queue to run out, she was startled out of her search for Phantom Planet and turned towards the door to be met with a jaw dropping sight. There in the doorway stood a very different Catherine from the one she met the previous day. Her hair was down and parted to the side and she was wearing a very short black dress that accented her features just perfectly and to top it off she was wearing black pumps that made her considerably taller than Beca.
"Oh…wow." Beca gasped, flinching immediately after and hoping she was the only one who heard that. Catherine greeted her with a giant smile and sparkling eyes.
"Hey! Sorry I'm so late, I was at this thing for my sorority and…" Catherine started
"You're in a sorority!?" Beca blurted out. Again she mentally cursed herself for her lack of filter when it came to her reactions and decided she would silently count to three before responding to anything else as to not embarrass herself even more.
Catherine just giggled.
'Thank God she's not offended…'
"Yeah. Zeta Tau Alpha, ever heard of us?" Catherine asked as she came closer, putting her keys and clutch on the desk and made herself comfortable by leaning against it.
"Uh, No. Can't say that I have…I'm not really knowledgeable on that whole, um, scene." Beca replied
"Well, I'm sort of a legacy and that's basically why I joined. They're great girls; we just had a charity fundraiser for save the music. It was a lot of fun! But that's why I'm so late coming to meet you." Catherine explained.
Beca nodded and gulped. Catherine's appearance and the news that she was a sorority chick began to take its effect on her as she tried to remain cool.
"What's that there?" Catherine asked, pointing to the CD in Beca's hand as she approached and got right into her comfort zone. Beca looked down and then back up at Catherine who was grinning wildly at her.
"Oh um. Phantom Planet's The Guest…I was about to play one of the extra tracks from it."
"I love this album! Which one?" Catherine asked, lifting the CD out of Beca's hands and flipping it over.
"Somebody's Baby." Beca said
"No way…that's my favorite song of theirs." Catherine informed her.
"Really?" Beca questioned
'It's mine too…'
"That's not lame is it? I know it's a cover, but, it's the best." Catherine stated, handing the CD back to Beca.
"Definitely not lame." Beca told her with a sincere smile.
"Soo, how's your shift going so far?" Catherine asked as she tucked some hair behind her ear and looked around.
"Eh, it's going alright. Just playing some new mixes…which reminds me…" Beca said while fishing around in the pockets of her hoodie for the flash drive before handing it to Catherine.
"I think it'll suit your standards." Beca told her with a confident grin.
"Oh I already know you suit my standards," Catherine replied flirtatiously, causing the blood to rush to Beca's face. "I just need these to convince my uncle…and maybe to add to my personal collection." She added.
"Well, play your cards right and maybe you'll get a personal mix…you know, if you're lucky." Beca said matter of factly.
"Hm, well it looks like you're in luck, because I'm feeling pretty lucky…" Catherine said with a wink as she twirled her hair in her fingers
"We'll see about that, lady luck." Beca teased. Catherine just giggled.
Noticing the queue was almost up, Beca excused herself to the booth to throw on the track and ready another playlist. Catherine followed her and leaned in the doorway with her arms crossed as she watched the DJ work.
"This looks like it comes naturally to you." Catherine stated.
Beca turned to face her while standing up and shrugged.
"Sort of. There's a huge difference between performing live and playing tracks on the radio. I prefer playing live…it doesn't require so much talking, I like to let the music speak for itself."
"Yeah I agree. I don't really like talking that much either." Catherine said as she walked up to Beca and got close so their faces were a mere inch apart.
"N-no?" Beca stuttered out as she felt Catherine's breath on her face and saw her move away just as she was about to close her eyes.
Catherine just giggled with a sly grin and Beca shook her head and rolled her eyes.
"You're kind of a tease, huh?" Beca asked.
Catherine just nodded. "I'm in a sorority for God's sake!" she told her as the two shared a laugh and left the booth.
Catherine ended up hanging out with Beca for pretty much the rest of her shift. They talked in depth about all of the music they enjoyed like their all time favorites and their guilty pleasures (most of which they shared) and Beca gave her a tour of the rest of the station. At around 4am, Catherine decided she'd better get going as to not worry her sorority sisters.
"I get it. I mean, you wouldn't want to worry the friends that you paid for." Beca teased Catherine as she walked her out.
"Exactly, I paid good money for them; I can't just let them worry!" Catherine joked back.
"Well, be safe, and text me when you get home." Beca told her, not exactly feeling right about letting Catherine walk across campus this late…or early, rather.
"And what if I don't?" Catherine questioned with a raised eyebrow as she grabbed her keys and clutch off the desk.
"Well, then I'll worry and I mean, I know you didn't pay for my friendship but I'd still like to consider it valuable. Plus, if anything happens to you I'm the first suspect since you were with me last and I don't have an alibi worked out yet, it'll be this whole big thing. So just text me, save me some trouble." Beca said
"But I like causing trouble!" Catherine told her
"That doesn't surprise me, like at all." Beca replied with her signature eye roll.
"Anyways, I'll text you when I'm home. Maybe we could get coffee tomorrow? You know, continue this whole 20 questions sort of thing." Catherine suggested as she prepared to leave.
"Sounds cool. Just text me." Beca told her with a shrug to which Catherine replied with a hug.
"Thanks for showing me all of this." Catherine told her as she pulled out of the hug, causing Beca to frown at the lost of contact.
"Goodnight Catherine." Beca said after escorting the girl to the door.
"Goodnight Bec!" She replied enthusiastically as she made her way out of the station.
Beca pulled out her phone to check and see if Chloe had texted her back, which she hadn't to her dismay. She had sent her some words of encouragement since she knew her surgery was early the next morning and wanted to comfort the redhead. She sighed solemnly and went back to sorting CD's as she waited for the last hour or so of her shift to pass.
"Favorite animal?" Catherine asked, taking a sip of her latte and smirking at the DJ's expression.
"I don't have one. I don't really care for them." Beca said nonchalantly
"What!? How do you not like animals? Not even puppies!?" Catherine exclaimed. Beca just shook her head.
"Not even puppies." Catherine rolled her eyes, convinced it couldn't be true.
"Well, I like bunnies. I have a pet one at home. His name is…"
"Lucifer?" Beca quipped with a smile, causing Catherine to reach across the table and poke her.
"His name is Charlie!"
"Well I'm sure Charlie is barrels of fun, even though you gave him an awfully boring name." Beca teased. Catherine furrowed her brow and pouted.
"He's not boring and neither is his name!" Catherine defended
"Yeah, whatever you say." Beca said sarcastically.
"Where's your favorite place to go when life gets too much to handle?"
Catherine pursed her lips as she thought for a moment.
"Well, I'm from Rhode Island and we have a lot of beaches but there's this place that's just rocks overlooking the sea and I love to go lay out there and escape. It's perfect because there's a spot that the tourists don't know about, so even in the summer we can go there and hangout and not be bothered. I've made all of my biggest decisions there, including the decision to leave home and come here for college." Catherine told her
"That's awesome. You definitely seem like a beach girl." Beca informed her.
"Really? How so?" Catherine asked her quizzically.
"Well, I mean, you're just laid back. I don't know. You seem like a New England girl, I can't explain it." Beca reasoned.
"Born and raised. Where are you from?" Catherine asked
"Portland. I'm a city girl, so it's weird for me to be in sort of a rural setting, but I've gotten used to it I guess." Beca said with a shrug.
"So why DJing? What made you get into that?" Catherine questioned, easily keeping the conversation flowing.
"Um, well I love music. I know everyone says that but I really really do. When I got to high school, I realized I was definitely an introvert and wasn't into all the girly shit like the girls my age and I just focused on music…playing it, creating it, learning it. It became my escape from…" Beca stopped herself quickly, realizing she'd only known this girl for a few days and wasn't ready to get into the details of her upbringing or lack thereof.
"…From what?" Catherine asked, concerned.
"Oh, um. Ya know, life…being a teenager." Beca quickly responded.
"I love controlling a moment by music...I guess that's why I became attracted to being a DJ. I can also say a lot more with music than I can with words so it's a good release because I hate talking." She said with a wink.
"Well, I hope you like talking to me." Catherine said in a flirty tone, returning a smile when she saw Beca look down and grin as she tucked her hair behind her ear nervously.
"Yeah. I like talking to you." Beca sheepishly admitted.
"Good, because I really like talking to you Beca." Catherine told her confidently returning the wink.
"You know exactly what to say at all times, don't you?" Beca asked with an amused smile.
"It's an acquired skill. I'm pretty persuasive as well." Catherine said
"Uh huh. Well so am I." Beca stated to which Catherine raised her eyebrows at.
"Oh yeah? Prove it." Catherine challenged, crossing her arms and giving Beca a quizzical look.
"Well I'm doing it right now." Beca said
"And what exactly are you persuading me into?" Catherine asked
"As we speak, I am slowly persuading you to go out with me." Beca told her, leaning back with confidence.
"Mhmm, is that so?" Catherine teased with a smirk.
"We've been sitting in this coffee shop talking about the most random things for almost 3 hours. I do believe I've won you over Catherine."
"Maybe you have, but I'm old fashioned. You still have to ask me out properly." Catherine stated
Beca just grinned and let out a soft laugh.
"Well, Catherine. Will you go out with me tomorrow night? Officially?" Beca asked
"I'd really like that. You can meet my sorority sisters!" Catherine said excitedly
"…Wait, what?"
Beca returned to her dorm with every intention of crashing into bed and sleeping until her shift at the station but as she lay there she couldn't help her racing mind. She was excited for her date with Catherine the next night which usually wouldn't be the case with her. She knew that if it was Chloe, she would be freaking out and obsessing over every detail and it bewildered her that she didn't feel that way with Catherine, at all. When she was around the peppy sorority girl she was cocky and confident (for the most part, like when she isn't wearing a low cut black dress and getting all up in her business) but when she's around Chloe, all it takes is a glance from the older girl to make her fall apart inside and out.
'Stop it. Stop comparing Catherine to Chloe!' she mentally scolded herself.
Truth was, she just couldn't.
And if by some strange twist of fate, her phone buzzed with a text from none other than the red headed devil.
Chloe: I'm alive!...at least, I think. My throat's pretty sore but other than that the operation was fine. Just letting you know so you don't worry = ) Feel free to go back to your regularly scheduled anti-social programming, Mitchell =P
Beca grinned at the older girl's teasing manner.
Beca: Glad to hear you're alright. And FYI, I'm totally partying hard with like ALL of my friends right now. ; )
Chloe: Pics or it didn't happen!
Beca: Pictures fade away, memories are forever.
Chloe: You're such a dork Becs. How's your break going?
Beca: It's going well. Just working and mixing, as you could've probably guessed.
Chloe: Well I'll be back in 4 days to save you from boredom little one.
Beca: Can't wait. Rest and take it easy, will ya?
Chloe: Thanks for the reminder, I totally would've forgot *insert Beca eye roll here* ha, you're so sweet. Xox
Beca: I actually really did just roll my eyes at that =p
As Beca rolled over to try and sleep again, she couldn't help but wonder why she hadn't told Chloe she was hanging out with Catherine, or who Catherine even was, for that matter.
'It didn't really come up, I guess.' She figured.
Yeah. That's the excuse she's going with.
A/N: Next chapter will be Beca and Catherine's date AND the return of Chloe and the rest of the aca-girls. #Drama
